VA-42

I need the help of an Administrator to sort out a glitch. All US Navy & Marine squadrons in Wikipedia are named according to their alpha-numeric designation. Attack Squadron 42 (U.S. Navy) needs to be moved to "VA-42" but the spot is already taken as someone originally set it up as a disambiguation page. I moved the disambiguation page to VA-42 (disambiguation) to make way for it but I can't change it without administrator priveledges. Please advise. Jonny Moseley

I just had a look at Jonny Moseley, and I am troubled to see you blocked an account with no warnings whatsoever - particularly given that the account name suggests some connection to the subject of the article. That you did so for "constant vandalism" six days after the account's last edit, which had come nearly a full month after the edit before that is simply gobsmacking. Such behavior is completely unacceptable - especially for somebody who appears to be editing a BLP that they have some involvement in. Please be more careful in the future. • I'm glad that you took a look at Jonny Moseley but, you should take a look at the changes made by the other editor before coming to my "talk" with an attitude. I don't care if an editor create an account with a name that may suggest some connection to the subject of the article. That is an assumption on your behave, because you know very well that anyone can create an account with whatever name they please. Especially those who are "fans" of a specific subject.

Now, before you come to my talk page to complain, take the time to look at the other person's edits: On May 15, 2008 - [1], On June 8, 2008 [2] and on June 22, 2008 [3]. Not only did the person delete a well written encyclopedic version of the article, but the person insisted in posting a fan type of article with POV's in total disregard to the established format, not once but three times. This my friend, in my book, is the same as vandalism.

Even if the editor has some involvement with the subject, the editor may add to the article without distorting it's format and even then he or she is subject to the rules which we all must follow which states that he or she must refrain from POV's and provide verifiable reliable sources to back up whatever they post. I looked at the edits. The fact remains that it is TOTALLY inappropriate to ban without warning, especially when the user is not posing any sort of active vandalism threat (given their slow speed of editing). Yes - there are other possible explanations for the username. But this is part of why we warn before blocking - to give people a chance to explain and provide more information. Instead you assumed bad faith, blocked without warning and counter to the blocking policy, and created nothing but hurt feelings and ill will. That you think this action was defensible is appalling. Just wanted to remind you about the blocking policy. Remember, blocks should never be used punitively; only block to prevent disruption or harm to the encyclopedia. Looking at this block log, both of your blocks were rather inappropriate. The first one, 1 week after the users last edit was in no way preventative. The second block, 2 hours after the last edit, was not preventative either. Also, you failed to warn the user to cease his or her disruptive activity, which believe it or not, can be quite an effective alternative to blocking. I see Phil tried to explain this to you, but you didn't seem to care, so I'd strongly urge you to refrain from these types of inappropriate blocks in the future. • I realize that it was my "bad" and that I should have warned the person that I would block them (not "ban" as Phil stated), for distorting a well written article by blanking the page and creating a fansite full of POV's, not once, but three times. Alphabetization

I think that to alphabetize by first name is a total cop-out, running away from the problem. Nobody ever alphabetizes by first name. For the small minority of names that have a "de" or whatever, the rule in Spanish is that the dominant word in the paternal surname determines the order. Thus Eugenio María de Hostos falls under "H", Héctor O'Neill falls under "O' and not "N", Kenneth McClintock falls under "M" and not "C", but José De Diego falls under "De" and not "Di" because he capitalized his "De" and no one ever talks asbout him as "Diego" as they do refer to "Hostos" (as in Hostos College, not "De Hostos" College). Most of the users of List of Puerto Ricans do know Spanish, and the few that do not will not have a problem adapting since they are used to seeing Thomas Jefferson-J- way before George Washington-W- in their own list of presidents. I thought you were kind of the main editor of the List of Puerto Rican? After reading your explanation, I've been looking in Wikipedia at dozens of other lists and have failed to come up with even one that alphabetizes based on first name! For example, in the list of sculptors, you have difficult names like Lucien van Arend, which appears under the "A" of "Arend" and not the "V" of "van". One other point. If you alphabetize by formal first names, and you're looking for former Chief Justice Cecil Snyder, the subject of one of my stubs, you'd never find him! Why? Because his name is actually Aaron (which he never used and hardly nobody knew). A reasonable person would look for "Snyder". Not finding him, a persistent, curious person would look for "Cecil". Virtually no one would look for "Aaron". Lists are made to facilitate research, not to create an impenetrable alphabetic maze or intellectual endurance contest!-Pr4ever (talk) 15:27, 20 July 2008 (UTC)

Puerto Rican Campaign‎

Hey Tony, I was thinking that perhaps we should merge all the campaign‎ into this article, instead of having a lot of stubs running around. Taking under consideration how brief the conflict was before Spain surrendered, we could produce quite a solid article, which is quite impressive if we consider that this was over in just a few days. We will need to review the language of some of these stubs, the one covering the battle of Asomante is claiming that the American troops were "settled for the evening", which isn't accurate since the commander actually retreated after five of his officers were injured. There is also the fact that they don't mention the first battle at Asomante, which happened three days before and concluded with the first of two retreats. Herman Bottcher

Tony, oustanding sir, I have been using wikipedia for a while but am going to register now. Thanks so much for your page and info on Herman Bottcher. We have many common intersections, I am an honorary Buriqua! and served as a Corpsman with the US Marines 1983-97. I had the privilage of working with an US Army reserve unit from Puerto Rico in 2003 at the begining of Iraqi Freedom as they were guarding the Merchant ship I was working on-from Taxas to Kuwait. That's another story.

I am facinated with Puerto Rician culture and history.

Second Battle of San Juan

This battle was not part of any larger battle for san juan. There were three distinct naval battles at san juan each by different forces. A large fleet bombarded the city in the first battle, the second battle was quite a bit later and consisted of a spanish sortie against a blockade ship, the third battle consisted of a blockade ship attacking a blockade runner and then being repulsed near the city by heavier spanish vessels. It is my intention to complete and expand all three article and i dont really see the need for them all to be lumped into a few lines in a paragraph in a campaign article. By doing so you are cutting out the details of each battle and only listing a minute iota of information when really there is much more to be told.
