Informal advice[edit]

Hi. If you're new around here, it's probably best to avoid the subject of whether "traditional counties" exist or not (e.g. whether Merionethshire still exists). If anyone dares to suggest that it doesn't, then somebody will very (very) likely jump on it very quickly. This is a very touchy subject on Wikipedia: some people have very passionate views about it (see Talk:Traditional counties of England, for instance). Like I say, tread very carefully. Can you see anything wrong with replacing the phrase:

"It is the county town of the traditional county of Merionethshire (Meirionydd)."

with:

"It was the county town of the traditional county of Merionethshire (Meirionydd) but following the re-organisation of local government in 1974 it became part of the new county of Gwynedd."

If you want to understand what is going on at the Welsh local government articles, you would be very well advised to read:

All of the "traditional counties" (sic) articles are being persistently targeted by members of these organisations.

Hi there! Was just looking back at a message left for User:Mais oui! and found you had also left a message of simillar content! You seem to take an interest in the whole counties issue.

It is apparent that we hold the exact principles this matter, and trust you have read the official Wikipedia conventions (places) - which dictate that modern geography (as understood to be post 1974) is the one which we should indeed use. Historic counties should be placed as an afternote or secondary.

Do please becareful not to provoke arguements and/or become too frustrated with edit patterns - County Watch vandals can be highly targetted.

Anyway, like I said to Mais oui!, the County Watch vandals are very well organised, and can be highly focussed, should you ever need support or just a chat about this matter, do please feel free to message me, and don't forget we have the full backing of Wikipedia. Flintshire[edit]

I don't think User:Owain is taking an anti-Welsh language stance by his edit on Flintshire. He has given an explaination of his edit which I agree with. The Welsh language name for the item has is best given in the article and including them all over the place in an English language article decreases readability. If you wish to promote the Welsh language, what would be more constructive is to expand the Welsh language version of the article at: Sir y Fflint - Wicipedia. I don't believe Owain is anti Welsh language, he has on numerous occasions, added Welsh to articles I've created and amended my Welsh. (Sloman 15:06, 28 June 2006 (UTC))[reply]

Database lag[edit]

We're having an issue with database lag at the moment -- I'm not a vandal, and in 35,000 edits I haven't vandalised yet, I promise. Sometimes when you rollback you seem to get the "wrong" version. Looks like it's fixed now. Cheers, Antandrus (talk) 15:45, 5 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Call for consensus on fan site list on Andy Murray page[edit]

Hello Maelor,

You've probably noticed my (probably foolhardy) attempt to resolve the edit war on the Andy Murray page regarding fansites. The protagonists do not look about to resolve it among themselves, so I'd appreciate it if you and other regular editors could express your views on this part of the page, so that we can stop the war going forward, or at least block a protagonist who persists in it. Flags of Wales[edit]

Overton-on-Dee[edit]

To answer your question the county borough page was pointing to 'Overton' (a disambig page) as was the Tim Vincent page. I changed them both to Overton, Wrexham not realising there was the abovenamed article already in existence. On creating the Overton, Wrexham page I then (at the last moment) discovered that Overton-on-Dee and Overton, Wrexham are the same place and made my new page into a redirect. Time then ran out to alter the other two - but I did do 'List of United Kingdom places' which is where I came in. Please look back and you will see I changed neither from Overton-on-Dee. Ynys Môn Pronunciation[edit]

Sorry about the delay - I was away. The pronunciation by those living on the island ( as translated into english phonetics) is something like:- Un (as in bun - southern english version) iss ( as in hiss) Morn (as in morning) or Mawn (as in Dawn). I also struggle with IPA and the purists may well object !

Hi again. I've checked with admins and they suggest that it needs re-writing. It's formatted badly for a WP article (which is why I reverted in the first place) because it needs an explanation as to why it's there (not just a quote). You have already pointed those out. I have pointed out counter-examples that prove there is a well-known English-language name. As this is the English-language Wikipedia the English-language name should be used. As for the title of the article, you well know that you cannot use Wikipedia as a reference in Wikipedia. I've always written it Aberdyfi, and I'd assumed that "Aberdovey" had gone the way of "Caernarvon" and "Conway". So the Gwynedd council document you said that Owain cites surprises me. But there are also pages on their website that give Aberdyfi instead:

Their Gwynedd road map has both (with Aberdyfi first): :[5].

Puzzled by this, I asked a solicitor I know at the council, and she says "Aberdyfi" is the standard now, adding that "I think some of the English residents spell it Aberdovey, but I rarely see it these days". Not a formal statement on behalf of the council but still... And anyway, I certainly don't know anyone who writes "River Dovey" or "Dovey valley". Maybe we could change the beginning of the article from

Aberdyfi (formerly Aberdovey in English)

to

Aberdyfi (sometimes Aberdovey in English)

The person in charge of these things at Gwynedd is on leave this week. I've left her an e-mail. The general view from several members of Gwynedd staff is that it should be "Aberdyfi" on the English version of the Gwynedd web site too. Hi Maelor, I too have been making enquiries regarding Aberdyfi over the weekend, and was actually told by someone in Gwynedd Planning Dept that it is spelled "Aberdovey". However, said official went away to look at a map to check, and indeed my OS map spells it like this. Whatever the situation, it's clearly not as black & white as (e.g.) Dolgelley & Portmadoc which "officiall" became Dolgellau & Porthmadog in the 70's. Neither is it like Cardiff, which is really only "Caerdydd" to Welsh speakers. But whilst it is in this slightly grey area, by far the majority of references refer to Aberdyfi, as you say (no real point in referring to "speakers" - many say the place but don't need to spell it!) and I think that the suggestion to use "... sometimes Aberdovey" is an ideal solution. No idea about the road sign (but I could guess!) but take a look at http://www.aberdyfi.org/ and click on "Tourism Office". Look at the image there!

Also note their comment "Don't try 'Aberdovey' on Autoroute - you'll never find us!".

Helo Maelor, Thought I'd let you know I fully support you on Aberdyfi. When I saw ABERDOVEY in the info box I changed it to ABERDYFI but a certain user changed it back to the anglicised spelling (three times!), even though the last time I compromised by putting ABERDYFI / ABERDOVEY (as it seems both are recognised by the P.O.). Why can't some people accept and respect the Welsh language? Does wikipedia have an official policy guideline on this issue, as i keeps recurring. Some users seem really concerned to keep the use of Welsh language personal and place names (i.e. the true names) to a bare minimum in Welsh articles. En.wikipedia is a widely used resource - with this attitude is it any wonder people from other countries seem surprised to find that Cymru actually has a language of its own?! How do we resolve this? Names of places[edit]

Saw your post on WP:AN/I. Have you tried looking at Wikipedia:Naming conventions (settlements)#United Kingdom? According to that guideline the convention for UK is to refer to settlements as [[placename]] unless disambiguation is needed and then it is [[placename, county]]. When you move an image to commons, be sure to place the tag subst:ncd on the images.(Not bold though) If you change the name of the image, you put subst:ncd|"New Image Name.jpg" where the new image name is what you named it. I agree!!! As you can see, someone keeps changing the words and I suspect that they are getting them from a book! The English version bore no resemblance to the Welsh. So I suspect a non-Welsh speaker. The Welsh for to scratch is crafu so I assume the word is some south-west dialectic version? Oxford Wikimania 2010 and Wikimedia UK v2.0 Notice[edit]

Hi,

As a regularly contributing UK Wikipedian, we were wondering if you wanted to contribute to the Oxford bid to host the 2010 Wikimania conference. Please see here for details of how to get involved, we need all the help we can get if we are to put in a compelling bid.

We are also in the process of forming a new UK Wikimedia chapter to replace the soon to be folded old one. If you are interested in helping shape our plans, showing your support or becoming a future member or board member, please head over to the Wikimedia UK v2.0 page and let us know. We plan on holding an election in the next month to find the initial board, who will oversee the process of founding the company and accepting membership applications. They will then call an AGM to formally elect a new board who after obtaining charitable status will start the fund raising, promotion and active support for the UK Wikimedian community for which the chapter is being founded.

You may also wish to attend the next London meet-up at which both of these issues will be discussed. If you can't attend this meetup, you may want to watch Wikipedia:Meetup, for updates on future meets.

I'm not sure on this one Jeremy, so I've avoided doing anything about it! There is also the article on Acton Hall to consider! I agree that the three articles have too much in common and are confusing. Acton Hall was the big house in Acton Park in the village of Acton. The house (and the park) was the estate of the infamous Judge Jeffreys. I've become disillusioned with editing articles about Wrexham. Too many people can't grasp the difference between the articles on Wrexham (the town) and Wrexham county borough, so I've given up editing them! File:Penycae top res.jpg is now available on Wikimedia Commons as Commons:File:Penycaetop.jpg. This is a repository of free media that can be used on all Wikimedia wikis. The image will be deleted from Wikipedia, but this doesn't mean it can't be used anymore. You can embed an image uploaded to Commons like you would an image uploaded to Wikipedia, in this case: [[File:Penycaetop.jpg]]. Note that this is an automated message to inform you about the move. Llewelyn Kenrick[edit]

Hi - I don't know if you are still active on WP as there seems to be some time since your last edit. I hope so for you may be able to help me to resolve a problem wih the Kenrick article and the early history of the Football Association of Wales. In particular, are you able to confirm the date and location of the meeting at which the FAW was founded? The Kenrick article refers to a meeting at the Wynnstay Arms Hotel, Ruabon in May 1876, whereas several other sources (most especially here) refer to a meeting at the Wynnstay Arms Hotel, Wrexham in February 1876. Europe 10,000 Challenge invite[edit]

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Europe/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like Germany, Italy, the Benelux countries, Iberian Peninsula, Romania, Slovenia etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. WikiProject Women in Red/The World Contest[edit]

Hi. This month The Women in Red World Contest is being held to try to produce new articles for as many countries worldwide and occupations as possible. There is over £3000 in prizes to win, including Amazon vouchers and paid subscriptions. Wikimedia UK is putting up £250 specifically for editors who produce the most quality new women bios for British women, with special consideration given to missing notable biographies from the Oxford Dictionary of Biography and Welsh Dictionary of Biography. If you're not interested in prize money yourself but are willing to participate independently this is also fine, but please add any articles created to the bottom of the main contest page even if not competing. While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright.
