Welcome to the 2023 WikiCup!

Happy New Year and Happy New WikiCup! The 2023 competition has just begun and all article creators, expanders, improvers and reviewers are welcome to take part. Even if you are a novice editor you should be able to advance to at least the second round, improving your editing skills as you go. If you have already signed up, your submissions page can be found here. If you have not yet signed up, you can add your name here and the judges will set up your submissions page ready for you to take part. Any questions on the scoring, rules or anything else should be directed to one of the judges, or posted to the WikiCup talk page. Signups will close at the end of January, and the first round will end on 26 February; the 64 highest scorers at that time will move on to round 2. The judges for the WikiCup this year are: Sturmvogel 66 (talk · contribs · email) and Cwmhiraeth (talk · contribs · email). Good luck! MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 14:16, 1 January 2023 (UTC)

Please get your simple facts straight

You sent me the generic message on "editing" contentious topics. Check your basic facts, I didn't make a single edit. I simply gave feedback in the talk section.

It continues to concern me that folks who get basic facts like whether I even edited anything wrong, want to proliferate a label of "India, Pakistan, Afghanistan" as contentious and insist they are the authority of fact vs fiction 172.0.233.143 (talk) 05:41, 18 January 2023 (UTC)

Now listen up. Why are you alternating between your account and the IP address? Please stick to using the former for making edits, even if those are to the talk pages. This is needed so others can know for sure that it is a single person posting comments, and not two. Edits from your account have not been confined to just article talk pages, as you erroneously claim, but even if they were, I want you to appreciate that Wikipedia's policies and guidelines (which you don't seem very acquainted with, so pray read the links embedded in the welcome message on your account's talk page) also extend to talk namespaces (vide WP:TPNO for starters), and you are required to adhere to them in your interactions with others. Apropos the contentious topic notice, it is a standard notice, and self-explanatory in what it conveys. It does not on its own imply any issues with your editing, as you seem to apprehend, but lets you know with a perspicuous turn of phrase that your edits have been to a contentious topic area (designated so on account of past disruption and discretionary latitude available to administrators to proactively stymie disruption), and you would do yourself a favour by treading carefully. DYK for 2022 Yangtse clash

On 18 January 2023, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article 2022 Yangtse clash, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the 2022 Yangtse clash saw Chinese and Indian troops fight hand-to-hand with melee weapons on a high-elevation ridgeline that formed their frontier in the area? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/2022 Yangtse clash. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, 2022 Yangtse clash), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

WikiCup 2023 March newsletter

So ends the first round of the 2023 WikiCup. Everyone with a positive score moved on to Round 2, with 54 contestants qualifying. The top scorers in Round 1 were:

  • Unlimitedlead with 1205 points, a WikiCup newcomer, led the field with two featured articles on historical figures and several featured article candidate reviews.
  • New York (state) Epicgenius was in second place with 789 points; a seasoned WikiCup competitor he specialises in buildings and locations in New York.
  • Germany FrB.TG was in third place with 625 points, garnered from a featured article on a filmmaker which qualified for an impressive number of bonus points.
  • United States TheJoebro64, another WikiCup newcomer, came next with 600 points gained from two featured articles on video games.
  • Byzantine Empire Iazyges was in fifth place with 532 points, from two featured articles on classical history.

The top sixteen contestants at the end of Round 1 had all scored over 300 points; these included Berkelland LunaEatsTuna, Thebiguglyalien, Sammi Brie, New England Trainsandotherthings, England Lee Vilenski, Indonesia Juxlos, Unexpectedlydian, Washington (state) SounderBruce, Wales Kosack, BennyOnTheLoose and Chicago PCN02WPS. It was a high-scoring start to the competition.

These contestants, like all the others, now have to start again from scratch. The first round finished on February 26. Remember that any content promoted after that date but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Some contestants made claims before the new submissions pages were set up, and they will need to resubmit them. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed.

If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Sturmvogel 66 and Cwmhiraeth. Trying

Just wanted to say that I am truly sorry for my outbursts. I'm trying to be less truculent. I hope we can put this flap behind us. In the bigger scheme of things the article is more important than us. Apologies again and best regards, Fowler&fowler«Talk» 01:09, 15 March 2023 (UTC)

Hi there, I saw your edit summary about "hitherto." A noun phrase is structurally the same as a noun. So, "hitherto" which is an adverb can't be applied to a noun phrase. E.g. Not only can you not say, Hitherto, 2017, but you also also cannot say "Hitherto, the year of the raw-knuckle fighting in the square," where the noun phrase "the year ... square" is by itself, nor for that matter, "Hitherto, 2017, the year of the raw-knuckle fighting in the public square," (where the noun phrase appears as an appositive).
But you can say:
  • They were struck by a hitherto unknown disease. (where the adverb hitherto modifies the adjective unknown), or
  • The disease was more virulent than he had hitherto discovered. (The adverb hitherto modifies the verb phrase "had discovered" (in past perfect)).
Hitherto's literal meaning is "up to this point" or "up to that point" or "until now" or "until then"
As the word is not used much these days, even in formal writing, usage guides typically don't have entries for it.
As you seem interested I thought I'd post something here. (The OED link is https://www.oed.com/view/Entry/87355?redirectedFrom=hitherto#eid but it requires a subscription) Fowler&fowler«Talk» 14:28, 15 March 2023 (UTC)
No worries, Fowler. You don't have to apologize, because, looking back, my responses were no better and savoured of unnecessary resentment. Trusting you will excuse me for my impudence too. I look forward to contributing to the article. Cheers. MBlaze Lightning (talk) 12:36, 17 March 2023 (UTC)

Nithyananda

Hi @MBlaze Lightning; regarding https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Nithyananda&oldid=1145159641

I have attempted to converse with the user who removed the recent content with no avail - rather I was brushed off[1]. I saw this as vandalism of that page. The user has tagged articles I contributed to with Conflict-of-Interest tags[2], when there is not. And I feel there is something the user has against me for commenting on Nithyananda.

My reasoning is that as Kailasa is not a country and no-one knows where it is, and was "set up" by the subject, it is likely to not warrant it's own page. Rather it would continue to be described in the subjects page, and thus is not "tangential".

It is of note that Indo-Asian News Service has described the courting of states and politicians as a "disinformation campaign claiming legitimacy" [3]

Since the label of Cult Leader is applied [4] the discussion of cultic activities would appear to be in need of documention.

I can see a case for splitting out a page for the mythical fictional country of Kailasa but I don't know of a precedent for this on Wikipedia. I am open to discussion
