Lushnja (Albanian: Lushnja (pronounced Lushnja) or Lushnja. Lushnja dialect: Lushnje or Lushnja) is a city of Central-West Albania located at 40.95°N, 19.71°E. It is the center of the District of Lushnjë in the County of Fier and has a population of about 68,000 (2003 est.). The town was founded in late medieval times by a Turkish widow called Salushe. She built a rest stop on the road from Durrës to Berat, giving birth to the town. As of 2000, old men still call the city Salushe.

In January 1920, Lushnja was a provisional capital of Albania and the place of the Congress of Lushnjë. Chieftains of Albania assembled in town and they declared Tirana first a provisional and then the definitive capital of Albania.

The Lushnjë district is known as a main provider of agricultural products to the rest of the country. It is one of very few field districts of mountainous Albania. The first cooperative in Albania was created in Krutje, a village of Lushnjë District. All the people of Krutje participated in this event and they are proud for this.

Also in Gorre, Lushnjë, in 25 November 1945, the communist regime started the Agrarian Reform by giving land to all of the people that lived in the countryside. However the excitement did not last too long as all the land was soon nationalized and no one in Albania was allowed to own land.

During the communist regime the city had a number of factories: Food processing, building materials industry which were closed down for one reason or another in the aftermath after the fall of communism.

Today the city has a very poor economy with very little industry and business.
