Resignation[edit]

Please do the honourable thing and resign as a bureaucrat. It's the least you could do. I'm sure you meant well, but you have torn the community apart. Guettarda 03:36, 31 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Oh please, give me a break. Linuxbeak has acted quite admirably throughout this entire debacle, which is more than I can say for most. Are you suggesting that Raul654 resign as well? </RHETORIC> Silensor 05:48, 31 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Nothing about his conduct has been 'admirable'. Understandably human, perhaps, and rash, but not admirable. -- Ec5618 06:29, 31 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The honourable thing to do is the resign - regardless of whether you meant well or not. Bureaucratship is a position of the highest trust in the community. If you have traumatised the community the way that Alex did, and then walk out on the mess you created, without taking full responsibility for your actions, it says a lot about your suitability for such a position of trust. Guettarda 17:23, 31 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Please remember that it was only after the (ultimately unsuccessful) personal negotiation between LB and Daniel Brandt that LB stood for bureaucrat and was confirmed by the community in the first place. Please do not presume what the status of the long term trust of the community in LB will be in this case. NoSeptember talk 17:47, 31 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'd say the perverted justice thing was much more of the stepping off point. As for "presum[ing] what the status of the long term trust of the community in LB will be" - I don't follow your point. Sure, he may regain the trust of the community - admitting he was wrong, not making flippant comments about people he drove out, not running away from the mess he created and resigning as a b'crat would do the job in my book. Do those things, and I would be willing to consider a new RFB in 6-12 months. But right now, the only honourable thing left for him to do is to resign. Guettarda 19:04, 31 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
... "in my opinion." You forgot that part. If there's one thing you can count on from Wikipedia, it's melodrama. Silensor 21:06, 31 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Shut up, Guettarda. Kim Bruning 14:46, 1 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Please, that's enough. Can we wait for Linuxbeak to come back and respond, instead of going crazy and going on and on on his talk page? NSLE (T+C) at 15:20 UTC (2006-06-01)

I agree. Linuxbreak, I support your efforts at trying to rehabilitate "lost" users. And I also am very impressed with how you backed off when opposition reared it's ugly head. Well done all around. Please ignore the haters, you have nothing to be ashamed of and definitely nothing to resign over. JohnnyBGood t c 17:05, 1 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I urge you not to resign. Elle vécut heureuse à jamais (Be eudaimonic!) 23:44, 3 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I too urge you not to resign. Even if you made a mistake, and I'm not saying you did, that is no reason to resign. You have my support. --rogerd 01:39, 4 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Obviously the claims to resign are next to crazy, sure, it may be contoversial but I'm 100% sure you did it in good faith and not an attempt to breach any trust we've placed in you. So feel free to ignore the calls for your resignation as I think the community as a whole would decline it if you did -- Tawker 22:40, 4 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Poetlister's RfA[edit]

Why did you close Poetlister's RfA so soon? While it wasn't going very well, she did get at least one vote of support, and as far as I can tell, there would have been no problem with letting the RfA run its full course, even if the fact that RfA is dominated by edit count 'fetishists'. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Stanfordandson (talkcontribs)

It was becoming a pile on, and several of the votes wasn't edit count related. I agree with Linuxbeak in closing it early. Thanks Jaranda wat's sup 01:58, 25 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

'Pile on' or not, it wasn't clear that the nomination would have failed, it wasn't clear it would have as it received at least one support vote and I meant to add my own, but the nomination still should have been allowed to run its course. Stanfordandson 21:30, 25 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Can you help?[edit]

Hi Linuxbeak...you were reccomended by Badlydrawnjeff as a person who could help me out with the process of bringing up articles to Featured Article status. I don't really know where to start. I want to get more involved with the article namespace. I joined the cleanup taskforce, but I am sort of confused about how it works (do I just pick up a job, or do I wait for an assignment?). If you could just give me a few pointers, maybe some jumping-off point, that would be wonderful.--The ikiroid (talk·desk·Advise me) 02:15, 28 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Responding to your response[edit]

Wow! First off, I have to congratulate you for such an honest, thorough, and well-written response. I've read it twice, checking up on the appropriate pages about each step. I can now understand why you have earned the position of a 'crat...your understanding of wikiprocess is much more detailed than most people here.

On that note, I'd like to get your opinion on some of the ideas I have. I have my eye set on bringing article about the IPA up to Featured Article status. It actually has many of the same problems as the Fencing article you mentioned: the article is chock full of facts—each sentence is weighted down by information. You can see in its old Peer Review that this was one of the main issues. It also has the problem of being hated by many casual readers, a lot of people would prefer approximated things like "STAY-shun," instead of the IPA "steɪʃən."

So I figure I'd do things in this order: I'll alert some heavy contributors to the article, such as Ish ishwar, Kwamikagami, and User:Nohat. I'll also contact the members of the Writing Systems WikiProject.

I do have a giant written resource, The World's Writing Systems, which should help a lot....but the chapter on my topic cites each fact from a previous resource, so should I cite the book's sources, or just the book?

My final issue is with Peer review. Since this article has already had one, how do I create a second? Thanks for helping me out.

Board candidate questions[edit]

Hi Alex, I'm glad to see you're running for the current board elections. I have some questions that I think would be good to know - please answer (or ignore) them as you see fit. Thanks. Cormaggio @ 11:27, 1 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  1. What do you do in real lifeTM?
In "real life"? What's that? ;-) I do several things in real life. I am a CSA (customer service advisor) at a Sears Auto Center, and I am also a computer (PC/servers) repairman. I am interested in computers in general, aviation, fencing, and a variety of other interesting things.
  2. What personal/professional experience would you bring to the board, if elected?
Personally and professionally, I would bring my experience as a leader of several projects and organizations to the board. I am a leader, not a follower, and (if I'm elected) I do not intend to change that.
As you are certainly aware, there already is (at least) one leader on the board. How do you intend to lead him ? What would be your style ? Anthere
  3. What do you see as the role of a board member?
A board member is an executive of the Foundation. Board members are responsible for insuring that things at the helm of the project go smoothly as well as ultimately deciding which paths Wikimedia is to go. It is not a task that is easy, but it requires a clear mind, good intentions and guts, all of which I have.
Sorry, but no. Board members are precisely NOT executive LinuxBeak. The executive are Brad and Danny for example. The role of the board is not to execute. It is to lead, to give a vision and to insure the vision is implemented properly by the executive. Anthere
  1. Do you have any personal aspirations you would like to pursue through a tenure on the board?
I am not pursuing this position for any personal aspirations. Sure, it might look spiffy on a resume, but I am running because I love Wikipedia and the Wikimedia projects. I want to play a larger role in this project, and I feel that I could bring Wikimedia to new levels of greatness.

Also, most (if not all) candidates have provided their age. Do you plan to, or do you feel uncomfortable doing so, and if so, why? Computerjoe's talk 17:59, 1 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Already did, as it is required. I am not uncomfortable telling you that I am 19 going on 20. Linuxbeak (AAAA!) 14:53, 11 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Composition of the board[edit]

What is your opinion on how the board should be constituted ? Do you think it should exclusively be composed of editors of our projects ? If so, rather elected or appointed ? Do you think we should have some people external to our community ? In those listed in the past two months on Foundation -l, can you list those you think would be great board members and those who might reveal dangerous for our dream ? Do you have names to suggest for board expansion ?

Copyright[edit]

Do you think the Foundation should be a publisher ? If not, do you think it should control what is publish, through the authorization (or not) of use of our brands ? Do you know of one project currently trying to be edited and in conflict with the Foundation on that matter ?

Money[edit]

What should be the business plan of the Foundation ? How would you suggest it earns money ?

Threat and forces[edit]

Can you cite 3 forces of the Foundation ? Can you cite the main 3 threats for our projects as of today ?

Vision[edit]

Can you cite the current three main projects/agreements/priorities of the board ?

If you had to decide which are the 5 most important tasks for the board to accomplish in the time of your term, which ones would they be ? (be practical)

Anthere

'Nother question[edit]

" * Advocate for Wikimedia project users in cases that require Board attention"

Good grief. Is the Board so jaded they really need someone to remind them exactly whose activities they are supposed to be facilitating?

I think you're misunderstanding the statement. I would be an advocate for users who require the attention of the board, and I'm not insinuating that the board is "jaded".
That's sort of my point. Why does the board need a user advocate? Have they let any users down in terms of attention? If so, does that not speak poorly of them? --Rhwawn (talk to Rhwawn) 00:12, 12 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
"Cut bureaucracy and unnecessary red tape as to make the projects more productive"

What bureaucracy do you speak of here? The processes for requesting a wiki for a new language? for donating? or for electing Board members? for adding patches to the live en wiki? etc. And how much are these unnamed reams of red tape impeding projects? Or could you be speaking of funding difficulties here; perhaps you would suggest advertising? As such a popular website, en is an obvious revenue stream of advertising, and forgoing this is a real and conscious decision that has to be constantly affirmed and re-affirmed. What are your views regarding advertising on Foundation-sponsored projects?

No, no, no, and no. Regarding "Or could you be speaking of funding difficulties here; perhaps you would suggest advertising", please do not put words in my mouth. I never said anything about advertising, and I have repeatedly stated in the past that I am totally against the idea of advertisement. Wikipedia would not be The Free Encyclopedia if there was advertising. The day that advertisements on Wikipedia show up is the day that I resign, for I do not work for anyone except the public here.
Had to ask about advertising (I remember your reaction to the Answers.com thing, but it was possible your opinions had since changed) - if you're following the other candidates' pages, I've asked everyone whose statements did not mention advertising there opinion about it. But you didn't answer what you see as red tape and bureacuracy; so...? --Rhwawn (talk to Rhwawn) 00:12, 12 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
"Reaffirm Wikimedia's, and especially Wikipedia's, underlying goal of building an encyclopedia"

Well, that's.... nice, I guess. Didn't notice that it needed to be re-affirmed, but what precisely would you do the help with building an encyclopedia? Alliances with other projects like Gutenberg (and if so, how?) Pressure the FSF to make the GFDL less of a horrorshow? etc. --Rhwawn (talk to Rhwawn) 04:07, 4 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm afraid that you have some misconceptions regarding what I have stated. The FSF is free to do whatever they please to with the GFDL. On en.wikipedia, I feel that there isn't enough focus on quality and encyclopedia building. I want the board to back a universal refocusing towards building an encyclopedia and its sister projects. Linuxbeak (AAAA!) 14:53, 11 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
But we do care what the FSF does, very much so. "Permission is granted to copy, distribute and/or modify this document under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License, Version 1.2 or any later version published by the Free Software Foundation". What changes they might make - hopefully for the better - are extremely material to us. Or am I misunderstanding you and you're completely fine with the GFDL v. 1.2?
As far as your "refocusing" goes, could you be more specific? I believe that one candidate mentioned that they wanted to have the Board be less generous in starting projects so manpower could focus on making current projects better, for example. --Rhwawn (talk to Rhwawn) 00:12, 12 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Running for the Board[edit]

You know you've got my vote, Linuxbeax. I think you can bring some much-needed non-stuffiness to Wikimedia. Good luck! - Kookykman|(t)e

I think the criteria were 400 edits and some length of time on a Foundation project. --Rhwawn (talk to Rhwawn) 18:42, 7 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Foundation Candidacy[edit]

You candidate's statement omits the material fact of your age. When asking other to vote for you, we have a legitimate interest in having complete information as we evaluate the choices. --StanZegel (talk) 04:07, 2 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

We have an interest in knowing that he is at least 18 and thus electing him would not be illegal. That is it. His contributions and platform stand or fall on their own merits - there should be no situation where a candidate would fail if they were 20 years old but suddenly succeed if they were 50. --Rhwawn (talk to Rhwawn) 13:41, 4 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I have already stated my age and I have been personally verified as, well, a person, by Brad. Linuxbeak (AAAA!) 14:53, 11 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Collaborative consensus-based nature.[edit]

Question. -- Jeandré, 2006-08-05t10:35z

My answer to that is that the board itself must push for collaborative and consensus-building in order for the projects to follow suit. If elected, I will push for that as part of my "refocusing". Linuxbeak (AAAA!) 14:53, 11 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Questions from Dijxtra[edit]

Hello, these are generic questions I decided to submit to every candidate. If you already answered the question in your application, skip it. If you consider any question to be to private for you to answer, feel free to state that and accept my apology for being to intrusive. I also ask you to pardon my English since spellcheckers don't check grammar :-) Here are the questions:

1. Privacy policy of Wikimedia Foundation projects states that: "It is the policy of Wikimedia that personally identifiable data collected in the server logs, or through records in the database via the CheckUser feature, may be released by the system administrators or users with CheckUser access, in the following situations: 1. In response to a valid subpoena or other compulsory request from law enforcement" If such subpoena occurs, would you agree that Wikimedia Foundation complies ASAP or would you request Foundation to dispute that subpoena in court, like Google did in January this year? Let me remind you that the second option requires money to be spent.

2. What is your opinion of WP:OFFICE? Do you think that:

  • It is very good solution to bureaucratisation of Wikipedia, allowing a swift action in cases which need such action. We should widen the circle of people who have the power to use WP:OFFICE.
  • It is very good solution to bureaucratisation of Wikipedia, allowing a swift action in cases which need such action. (And only Danny should use WP:OFFICE privilege)
  • I don't like the thing, but we need it so we don't get sued.
  • Community is above any user and we should think of WP:OFFICE as temporary measure until we find a way for the whole community to act swiftly in cases of libel accusations.
  • We should move our servers to jurisdiction which makes it hard for people to sue us for libel.

3. Have you ever been on a paylist of anybody/any organization/any firm connected to any current member of the board? Please understand this question in the broadest sense possible.

You're Famous![edit]

Hey Linuxbeak! Great to meet you this past weekend. I saw your name in the article Robert Levine wrote for The New York Times about Wikimania. Just thought I'd point that out in case you didn't see it. Jkbaum 18:27, 7 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, Linuxbeak, I've set the paper aside for you and will mail it and your shirts in about two weeks. Jkbaum 18:24, 9 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Check this out[edit]

Bill in U.S. House of Representatives contains one of my articles The following Bill Dr. Jose Celso Barbosa Post Office Building Designation Act introduced to the United States House of Representatives by Congressman Luis Fortuño, contains the mini-biography of Dr. Jose Celso Barbosa which I wrote. The bill was signed by President Bush on August 1, 2006. It's now Public Law 109-253. Tony the Marine 21:38, 7 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi.[edit]

Hey, are you the same Alex Schenck that used to hang out on the America's Army IRC server? I was just reading an article in the NY Times today and saw your name mentioned, and thought it sounded familiar ;) MrSomeone 04:59, 8 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Protected redirect?[edit]

Hi, hope you're having fun at Wikimania! I just ran into this redirect, and I dunno if it should really be there (cross-namespace redirects, WP:ASR, etc. etc.). Perhaps the original {{deletedpage}} would be better? Regards, Ziggurat 04:22, 10 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Chapter/board[edit]

What do you think of the relationship ? Do you see the relation as a federation type or a branch type ? (without or with legal ties). Do you think that chapters should have an authorization to use brand name and logo for deals (such as a DVD publishing) or should the Foundation handle this from a legal perspective ? What is your position in term of membership (should the Foundation have members or not ?). Anthere

PS: would you mind discussing these topics on meta with all editors rather than on the english wikipedia only ?

RePS : have you ever discussed Foundation matter with board members other than Jimbo ?

I think that it is a pretty bad start not to answer the current elected board member (who will stay a board member) when she asks a question. I'd love to see your answer please. Anthere

Giovanni33 proposal[edit]

Hi, Linuxbeak. Since you indicated here that you did not think Professor33 was a sockpuppet for Giovanni33 (based on the IP evidence available at the time, without having seen the linguistic evidence, and possibly without any knowledge of Giovanni's long history of sockpuppetry), I thought I would direct you to new discussion, in case you have missed it. Jayjg has confirmed through checkuser that Professor33, NeoOne, and CleanSocks are all sockpuppets of Giovanni33.[4] [5] Giovanni has now come as close as I think he can come (without losing face) to admitting sockpuppetry. He has agreed here that it doesn't pay, and has asked to be unblocked on condition that all suspected socks can be assumed to be his, and that he will not revert or make supporting arguments where they are, and that if he votes with them, his votes can be struck through. I think the idea is that if they are his puppets (which he doesn't want to admit, and I see no reason to force a confession), he will ensure that they don't show up to revert for him, and if some future editors turn up and support him and start reverting to his version, and are suspected of being his puppets, he is prepared to leave the pages where they are. I've made a proposal here, at the Incidents Noticeboard. If you really have nothing to do with your time, you can read Part One and Part two immediately above! Also, this section of Danny's talk page gives a summary of this history and contains links to all or nearly all the places where it has been discussed. The blocking admin has indicated that he will consider unblocking early, and I'd be happy with that, but I think we need to work out the conditions that Giovanni agrees to first. Don't feel you have to get involved, but if you have time, a comment at the noticeboard would be welcome. I'm hoping to have this sorted out as soon as possible, because I need to go on wiki-break to finish some writing. I know you received my long e-mail report. I presume you also received the fairly recent update with new evidence? Oh, and I want to thank you also for waiting to see the full evidence rather than for jumping right in when the limited evidence indicated that the block might have been unjust. Cheers. Board candidate[edit]

Hi, I'm translating candidates presentations to Portuguese language, but I need a small elucidation on these two points to evict misunderstanding. The points are

  • Provide a "for the people" viewpoint to the Board;
  • Serve as a conduit for ideas, concerns(this word is mixing-up-me, if you try to see it in a Portuguese dictionary may understand my problem :) ), and suggestions

If possible, reply right here on your user talk. Thanks. 555pt | msg | msg on w:pt 00:17, 16 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sure thing, 555pt. The first point I mean to convey is that I will bring "common Wikipedian" experience to the board. That is, I have worked with several of the Wikimedia projects on an intimate level, and that would be valuable to a board that governs said project. My second point (or more accurately, that one particular word "concerns") can be read as I will be a voice for any concerns or worries from regular users. Hope this helps, 555pt. Linuxbeak (AAAA!) 23:10, 17 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
If I read you well above, your vision of the board is that it should govern the projects (a board that governs said projects). Can you please explain more clearly what you mean by this and where do you place the community in the decision making process? Thank you notafish }<';> 14:49, 20 August 2006 (UTC) PS. Questions about your board candidacy should *really* go on meta. And it'd be nice if you answered them (Florence's question above has been left unanswered and I am interested in the answer as well).[reply]
oh; you noticed as well ? Anthere

Wikizine[edit]

Hi,

I am user:Walter from Wikizine. I offer you, like all the other candidates, the opportunity to send me a statement of around 300 words that I will send to the subscribers of wikizine. For more information see meta:Wikizine/election 2006.

Greetings, Walter 22:11, 23 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

PS: yes, I know, I have send this to you before by email. But for reasons I do not wish to explain here in detail I think in this case is useful that I can prove that I have asked you this. Because of that this second message.

Board candidacy question[edit]

Ethics

In a recent wikiEN-I en posting (8/19/2006), Jimmy Wales wrote:

"Most of us do care passionately about the ethics of what we are doing, and how it affects people. Indeed, for most of us, it is part of the very fabric of the reasons we participate. We are human beings, trying to do something good, not automatons puking out soulless "content" [...] we are good, we are ethical, we are trying to produce something important in

the world that matters to the world, and we want to do it the right way."

  1. Are you in agreement with that statement?
  2. If you do, what would you do as a board member to bring that understanding to life in our project?

Missing editor[edit]

Excuse me, do you have any news from Solensean ? He hasn't made any edit on :fr since August 3rd, and some of us french editors begin to worry a bit about him. He's usually much more active, and left without any warning. Since he told me he works with you, I thought to ask you. Thanks, Blinking Spirit 10:08, 26 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
