External links FYI

FYI, generally if an external link is already in the infobox, per the WP:EL guideline, we usually don't repeat it in the EL section. Basically the infobox spot is considered a more prominent space, so having it there helps distinguish it from the others. But great job with all the new election related articles. Oregon Government 2.0

Hi there. I'm one of the guys getting involved with the Oregon Government 2.0 project. I'm trying to get all the interested parties involved.

As you might be aware, we've made some progress. Earlier this month, Pete got his representative, Ben Cannon (D–46 Portland), to introduce HB 3091. It addresses copyright of works produced either by a state agency or with funding from the state treasury. Read it in PDF or HTML format. It has been referred to the House Rules Committee, where it awaits to be put on the agenda, last time I checked. My representative, Bill Garrard (R–56 Klamath Falls), is a member of this committee, and he seems to support this bill. I'm trying to work with him to keep it moving.

Further details are being recorded at the PDX Wiki page and its talk page. If you haven't recently taken some time to consult these pages, please do. Also, please share all your thoughts, suggestions, concerns, etc., at the talk page.

In order to help keep this bill alive, one thing we need to know is who our respective legislators are. This way, if we need to target a particular legislator, we can have the benefit of knowing one of their constituents. I think Rep. Tobias Read (D–27 Beaverton), another member of the House Rules Committee, is from your immediate neighborhood. Please go here and add yourself to the table to indicate who your senator and representative are. If you don't know, find out.

Invalid/blank info for Oregon measures — Where is it?

On several articles for Oregon ballot measures, you've included info about invalid and blank votes in the infobox. Measures 51, 52, and 53 are examples. Where did you access this information? I can't find it. — Athelwulf ^[T]/_[C] 22:36, 15 July 2009 (UTC)

Never mind. I figured out you can subtract the counted votes from the number of ballots turned in for that election (which the state reports) to get the number of invalid and blank votes. Clever! — Athelwulf ^[T]/_[C] 20:05, 17 July 2009 (UTC)

Hmm, that's a pretty cool bit of info to have. I have a couple of concerns though.

First, that is not the way percentages are typically reported in Oregon media; and that's not how election law works. If a measure gets 25000 "yes" votes, 50000 "no" votes, and 25000 of the participating voters leave that measure blank, it is understood to have failed with 33% of the vote. But under the present format, the infobox would make it appear that measure got only 25% of the vote. The important number is how many of the people who voted on the measure voted yes. (The "supermajority" requirement of Measure 47 is a separate issue.)

Second, I'm not sure it's implemented consistently -- I just noticed that the Oregon Medical Marijuana Act article has no blank votes reported...which seems unlikely to me. Possible, but unlikely. What's the status of these -- are there some that haven't been done yet? Should we go over them for accuracy? -Pete (talk) 05:06, 21 July 2009 (UTC)

Pete, I think the template wants the yes/no tally and percentages to be derived from the valid votes only, unless, as you mentioned, there's a "double majority" requirement in place. That is to say, even though 17.84% of the 2008 primary election ballots left their vote for Measure 51 blank or somehow improperly voted it, this fact would not be considered relevant when calculating the 74.92% passage of this measure among the properly voted ballots. It's good that you spoke up, since it's an important detail to be clear on. — Athelwulf ^[T]/_[C] 20:57, 21 July 2009 (UTC)

Howdy WikiProject Oregon folks, time again for the latest installment of As the Collaboration Of The Week Turns. Last week was one of the more successful COTWs in recent memory as we really worked hard as a community to improve Concordia University and Berry Botanic Garden. Both are now at least C class articles and nicely illustrated (thanks to Tedder, Finetooth, and Ipoellet). Plus it really was a group effort as we had five different WPORE editors work on the garden and ditto with the school, with some overlap between the two.

Let's try to fill up the List of parks in Portland, Oregon as much as possible by getting out and taking our own pictures or finding ones online that can be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons. The pictures uploaded will not only benefit the aforementioned list, but they will be used for future articles about specific parks and will fill up the Parks in Portland category over at Commons. WPORE COTW 2.0 - the picture edition

Greetings one and all. For some of you, this will be your first time receiving one of these messages, as it has been a year since the WikiProject Oregon Collaboration of the Week (COTW) was a regular thing. My hope is it gets back to being a regular thing.

Usually I would go over the past COTW, but we are basically starting out anew. So, without further adieu, this edition is our semi-annual picture drive. We usually try to do it when there is decent weather in the state, and today seems to fit the bill. Now although you are encouraged to go out and take pictures, you can also just search the internet for images that have the proper licensing and upload those. Flickr is one site that has a fair amount of content with the proper licensing (most images on Flickr are not compatible). See WP:COPYRIGHT in general. For some “free” sources, check out the our dormant subproject that has some links to sources.

Lastly, if you need to know what images we need, here are the requests. Please remove the request from the talk page if you add an image.

Finally (this is not image related), as the years have passed, we have lost many good editors, and others, like myself, are no longer in school or are working full-time or both, and thus are less active in the project. The project lives on, but it has created a bit of a power vacuum without a de facto cabal still around all the time. With that in mind, I encourage newer project members to step-up and fill some leadership type roles. Granted, we have no formal ruling junta or anything and no real defined roles, but there are many maintenance type tasks that some of us just took on to keep the project going. For instance, I ran the COTW, was pretty much the only one doing assessments, updating the portal, and even handing out the awards. I am sure others in the project can name what things they have done. The point being, that while I enjoyed those and still do some of those, I simply no longer have the free time to do all of it at a level that the project deserves. That said, I hope to start a discussion at WT:ORE where we can see if some newer editors would like to step-up and take on some of these tasks, which will hopefully make for a more inclusive project, and maybe get us back to the heyday of say 2008 when things were really rocking for WikiProject Oregon.

Graf Zeppelin

Michael, can you comment on the origins of the article LZ 127 Graf Zeppelin which you created in 2004. From an initial reading of the first draft, it appears that you were identifying with a German airship as you used metric measurements/weights and noted that the name was a "foreign word." There is a date convention however, that was in place which is the M/D/Y that is more common to the United States as the "popular" style of dates and that is the sticking point now as the article has evolved. Recently a bot changed the dates in the article which has resulted in an editor making the assertion that the US-style should predominate, and has made the argument based on the article being created that way and that no case had been made for the topic to be more related to Germany.
