I'm getting curious to actually analyze studies. Created this page: User:Montanabw/Hooves. Putting up what we've posted so far, want to try and get full-text versions of the articles. Found the one that commented in the abstract that dark hooves had more variability than white hooves, but didn't say why there - I am seriously wondering if anyone has correlated moisture and hoof structure, comparing hoof color, etc. That infamous "everyone knows" that horses in wet conditions seem to lose shoes more often... wonder if anyone has correlated moisture and hoof softness by color. This is another area where I feel like it should be "easy" to do a study, because there are plenty of "wet conditions" and "dry conditions" that horses are kept (think Ireland versus Texas). I will stop on by and try to dig up some articles. I'm hoping my vet friends come back with their equine anatomy textbook info so I don't have to pay scrib'd $8.99 to get the pages I want. Interlibrary loan is the wikipedian's best friend, if you can deal with the wait. Also, sorting out studies, climate is a good one, also stalls versus corrals, bedding (shavings versus straw), cleanliness, turnout. Using living horses and living tissue that hasn't been dried out (if they want to pound on hoof trimmings, do it within five minutes of removal or something, same day, same weather, no time to dry out the trimming, they're all like rocks after they've sat around in the barnyard a few days, so long as the dog didn't eat them... LOL! ) One thing I did note from the Jaime Jackson article (other than his absolutely suck-egg dismissal of historical accounts that contradicted his preconceived notions) is that bit about how the unpigmented permeable layer of the inner hoof DOES appear to absorb more moisture and his side comment that the molecules that produce pigment clearly indicate that one cannot say there are "no differences" between hooves. Your experience and mine are indeed OR, but one thing I would be very interested in seeing (based on, yes, my own experience) is how the feet of a single horse with both white and black hooves compare. You sort of have a control right within the same animal, as all four feet live in the same place with the same nutrition, the same hoof care, etc. I cannot recall which article I saw that had some comment about moisture being a factor in softer feet (which should be obvious) and I know one study found no differences in rate of moisture absorbtion between different colored hooves, but what I don't know is if they've tested different colors under live conditions where both colors are both moisture-filled.
