Re: your question

If it's an issue relating to Wikipedia in general, I would recommend bringing it up at Wikipedia:Village pump, in the appropriate subpage. If this is the case, check to see if it's been suggested before so you aren't suggesting something that's been rejected a few times already. If you want to change something with a group of articles, I'd recommend bringing it up at the relevant wikiproject. If it's just one article, bring it up on the talk page if you haven't already. What is it that you want to change, so I can be more specific? --TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 01:58, 7 August 2008 (UTC)

I want to be able to gather consensus from a wider range of editors on an article talk page (note that I am not necessarily conservative, but I opted to assist in the editing of that article to ensure maximum cohesiveness). Master&Expert (talk) 02:02, 7 August 2008 (UTC)
In this case, my advice would to be bold and change the page yourself - I agree that it needs better sources, and could be more neutral (though with an article like Conservatism, this is an ongoing struggle). The paragraph on North America that you mentioned is pretty bad, and it needs to include the other countries too. I might help you clean this article up if I have the time. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 02:11, 7 August 2008 (UTC)
If you'd like, thank you for helping me out. :) In general, with only 19 sources, it needs a few more citations. And certainly, such a controvertial topic will obviously attract POV statements and general difficulties. So I figured, this article needs to be cleaned up significantly, and why not seize the moment? Master&Expert (talk) 02:21, 7 August 2008 (UTC)

Liberalism FAC withdrawn

I appreciate you're acting in good faith but it's best if featured articles are nominated by people who have worked closely on them. This way they can give reasoned replies to reviewers and be familiar with the sources to make any suggested improvements. Per the WP:FAC instructions:

Nominators must be sufficiently familiar with the subject matter and sources to deal with objections during the FAC process. Nominators who are not significant contributors to the article should consult regular editors of the article prior to nomination.

I've withdrawn the FAC for liberalism. I see you initiated a peer review, but then closed it before it got any feedback, and significant contributors don't seem to have been consulted. There are tips at WP:FCDW/March 17, 2008 to help locate editors who might help out on peer review, which is a good way to prepare the article for FAC. Regards, SandyGeorgia (Talk) 05:51, 23 August 2008 (UTC)

I see, thank you. But there doesn't appear to be any particularly significant contributors to Liberalism - I figured, well maybe it could stand for an FAC. As for the peer review, I didn't find it particularly helpful. The automated review, which I can barely make heads-or-tails of, seems to indicate areas that don't appear to have any real problems. Then I closed the peer review in favour of what appeared to be a better review process at FAC. Master&Expert (talk) 05:58, 23 August 2008 (UTC)
The link I gave you above explains how to locate interested editors to conduct a successful peer review and help you bring the article to standard. FAC doesn't function as peer review, while editors invited to a peer review, which typically takes about a month, may be more willing to invest leisure time to help you bring the article to standard. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 06:07, 23 August 2008 (UTC)
Already checked the link and found a volunteer list. Thanks for the help. Master&Expert (talk) 06:08, 23 August 2008 (UTC)

re:Hi

Hi. Making new articles on video game subjects is extremely difficult, primarily because of our strict guidelines on notability, writing about fiction, and so on; most topics that warrant complete articles have been created. Thus, the main focus of most video game projects is to improve existing articles. Feel free to join the legendary Final Fantasy WikiProject and help them elevate articles to good or featured status. — Deckiller 02:37, 24 August 2008 (UTC)

Re: UNDO

No, it was perfectly ok to use the undo button for that. Pretty much anything can be reverted using the undo button, but if you aren't positive the edit was vandalism, you should add a note in the edit summary after the automatically generated portion explaining why you undid the edit. (example: [1]) If you have any more questions, feel free to ask. Cheers. Thingg 04:18, 13 October 2008 (UTC)

Yes, you did the right thing reverting that edit, though I don't really understand the warning about adding large amounts of content (since the IP user removed a small amount, not added a large amount). Also, just so you know, you aren't required to leave a warning/message on someone's talk page every time you revert an edit (though it is highly recommended in cases of obvious vandalism). If it helps you, what I probably would have done in the case of the edit you mentioned would be to revert the edits with an edit summary of something similar to "rv good faith edit", which basically means that while we're assuming the edit was done in good faith, I/we still think it should be reverted for whatever reason (in this case because the old revision was more comprehensive/professional). Also, don't worry if you make a mistake with your reverting. Be bold and go out there and clean up this place! I can assure you that you are doing just fine with your vandal-fighting and I have to say you are by far the most careful and considerate vandal-fighter that I have ever seen. So don't worry too much if you goof up once in a while. Everyone does it sometimes. Even I do, (*gasp*) and more than I'll ever admit to in public. ¬_¬ ... wait..... ;-) Thingg 04:51, 13 October 2008 (UTC)

You now have rollback!

Hey again. I just looked over your contribs a little more thoroughly and I hve to say I'm very impressed with your reverting accuracy. Because of this, I've given your account rollback rights. Basically, rollback adds another button (labeled "[rollback]") next to the undo button that allows you to revert edits with one click. (you can try it out here if you want) However, unlike the undo button, you should only use the rollback feature for vandalism reversions. (and based on your contribs and your questions tonight, I don't think you would do that, but I just want to make sure you are aware of that restriction) More info about rollback is in the above link. Enjoy your new tool! and as always, if you have any questions, feel free to ask. Thingg 05:17, 13 October 2008 (UTC)

Rollback

Don't worry about getting rollback. Just ask for it at the rollback desk or whatever and say 'to use Huggle' The admins will give you it. Vinson 00:54, 16 October 2008 (UTC) PS. I have no clue what came over me, but I changed the format of you use page. I really hope you don't mind. If you absolutely hate it, REVERT IT ANY TIME YOU WANT. IN FACT, I ENCOURAGE YOU TO REVERT IT! I just felt that i had to do something to it. If you decide that is terrible, revert it and whack me!

Shit, i just saw the post before me. Sorry about wasting your talk page space. Vinson 00:58, 16 October 2008 (UTC)

Re:Zh

Actually, I'm not much of a speedy tagger, which is shown by the fact I don't even use the right template. :) For some reson all the interwiki links are broken, so I'd imaginethat there would be a fair bit of nonsense coming in from the Main Page. Well, I'm actually just starting to get into NewPage Patrol, so I'm probably the one who's wrong, not you. ;)
Yes, I've noticed, Wikipedia's kinda funky at the moment. I'm guessing it'll clear up soon, though. Master&Expert (Talk) 04:56, 25 October 2008 (UTC)

BLP privacy policy for limited public figures

I think that the current deadlock on Joe the plumber is due to unclear BLP policy on limited public figures. I've made a proposal to clarify the policy here. Since you are one of the parties involved in the dispute, this is a notification for your input on the proposed policy clarification. VG 10:56, 26 October 2008 (UTC)

Thank you for notifying me of this. That proposal is exactly what we need. It identifies the problem that we're facing with Joe the Plumber and gives future reference for articles that face the same problem, so editors will have a better idea on what to do. I must say it's unfortunate that no overall consensus could be built on what to do with the article, particularly the BLP concerns, and it is especially disappointing how much drama has come of this. I hope we can effectively resolve this issue before we need to bring it to another venue. Master&Expert (Talk) 18:14, 26 October 2008 (UTC)

Red talk page link

The link to your talk page in your signature is deceiving because when a link is red on Wikipedia, it means that it links to a nonexistent page. I would recommend that you change the color of your talk page link to make it less deceiving. -- IRP 18:26, 27 October 2008 (UTC)

school

would you consider joining my school? I need your response by Oct 30 to hold a spot for the November class. Thanks, Vinson 23:09, 27 October 2008 (UTC)

What school might that be? Master&Expert (Talk) 00:41, 28 October 2008 (UTC)
It is a school that teaches things like anti-vandal, advanced formatting, etc. There is also a preschool and college(don't thing either is good for you right now). There are 2 spots left, hurry! Vinson 00:48, 28 October 2008 (UTC)
Sort of like am amti-vandal school? I might not, because I have a fair understanding of anti-vandalism (I find it sort of easy, truthfully). Thank you for the offer, though. :) Master&Expert (Talk) 00:52, 28 October 2008 (UTC)
Really? Do you know how to format your userpage or sig? If you feel confident with this, I suggest that you join my college. Regards, Vinson 01:35, 28 October 2008 (UTC)
Sig yes, userpage I figure I'll just steal from someone else when I've got time. <_<
What subjects does your WikiCollege teach? Master&Expert (Talk) 01:37, 28 October 2008 (UTC)
Well, My 'WikiCollege' teaches anti-vandalism/wikimatinence (pardon my spelling), Wikihistory and comprehension(non-relavent, I teach it anyway) and college level formatting. This is one-on-one for a week, open twice in december, once in feb, once in mar, and four times a month in the summer. Vinson 01:47, 28 October 2008 (UTC) I will definetly add majors, if you want i can notify you of these:)
I'm really not sure if I'm interested in this, to be honest. The thing is, to me, Wikipedia's not an educational experience, so much as it is a hobby. But I haven't made up my mind one way or the other yet. I'll get back to you on it. :) Master&Expert (Talk) 02:03, 28 October 2008 (UTC)

All that and more :) Our scope is enormous though we have about 50 task forces that help make it a bit more digestible by providing specific interest focus. --ROGER DAVIES talk 22:35, 16 November 2008 (UTC)

I see. I have to admit, this is something of a constant interest for me (along with science, and video games). Lately my focus is on Turkey and The Middle East, where I've been doing some WikiGnoming to try and improve the articles to good quality standards. But overall, it's a very general interest in militia for me. Master&Expert (Talk) 22:39, 16 November 2008 (UTC)
In that case,
may well be of great interest to you. They could all do with new members :) --ROGER DAVIES talk 07:32, 17 November 2008 (UTC)
Ohh, shoot. Is it possible the "6 month" rule could be given an exception? I've only been editing since June. Master&Expert (Talk) 14:54, 17 November 2008 (UTC)
There is no "6 month" minimum experience rule. That's just badly expressed and needs clarifying urgently (which I'll do). It refers to editors who have been absent and haven't made an edit in the last six months. Do feel free to join whatever appeals. Sorry about the confusion, --ROGER DAVIES talk 15:30, 17 November 2008 (UTC)
That's alright. Do you know where I could also find other parts of this WikiProject? Master&Expert (Talk) 19:29, 17 November 2008 (UTC)

The RfA Barnstar
Kurtis, I would like to thank you for your participation in my recent Request for Adminship, which passed with 112 supports, 4 opposes and 5 neutrals. A special mention goes out to Stwalkerster and Pedro for nominating me, thanks a lot for having trust in me! In response to the neutrals, I will try to double check articles that have been tagged for speedy deletion before I CSD them and will start off slowly with the drama boards of ANI and AN to ensure that I get used to them. In response to the oppose !votes on my RfA, I will check that any images I use meet the non-free content criteria and will attempt to handle any disputes or queries as well as I can. If you need my help at all, feel free to simply ask at my talk page and I'll see if I can help. Once again, thank you for your participation, and have a great day! :) The Helpful One 22:10, 25 November 2008 (UTC)

AFD of Thumbelina: A Magical Story

Hi there. May I ask why you closed this discussion (Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Thumbelina:_A_Magical_Story) after only two hours? That seems a little bit hasty, in my opinion. Thanks in advance for your response. Raven1977 (talk) 22:36, 19 December 2008 (UTC)

It is somewhat hasty - most AfD's run for a while longer before a consensus is reached. However, the commenters there were able to establish that the anime satisfied the relevant notability guidelines (namely WP:OUTCOMES#Entertainment and WP:ANIME), and that it needs cleanup, but not deletion. Though it might have been a bit premature, I figured the consensus was unlikely to change from that point, so I opted to close it a bit early. Don't feel at all discouraged, though - the article is not of particularly good quality (it's a stub) and needs more references.
Hope this helps. Happy editing :) Master&Expert (Talk) 01:33, 20 December 2008 (UTC)

Apology

I've posted a general apology in my withdrawal statement at the Oversight election page, but I felt that as a contributor you deserve an individual apology too.

It was not my intention to let the election begin without a statement, but an IT gremlin "ate" my first attempt at posting there some hours before the election was to begin and then unforseeable RL issues prevented me from getting back to it until too late. Thank you for your consideration and sincere regrets for wasting your time. --Dweller (talk) 10:19, 6 February 2009 (UTC)

That's perfectly fine - I had a feeling something had happened that got in the way of you posting some sort of statement (intentionally not posting a statement would be quite unlike you, from what I've seen). Let me add that I would actually thoroughly trust you with oversight, I just tentatively opposed pending a statement. :) Master&Expert (Talk) 02:09, 8 February 2009 (UTC)

I've noticed your google searchs but would like to suggest a few changes that must be made to them (if you don't mind the suggestions):

  1. Change the 'Samaria' searh to be X or Y or Z rather than X and Y, which is the current format. Here's a sample search with the added, rarly used in English term 'Yesha' (translates to: Judea, Samaria and Gaza) - [3]
  2. Change the 'West Bank' search to be "A B" rather than A and B, which finds all the B's and all the A's regardless if the context is relevant to "A B" -- in this instance, all the pages that include a mention of a bank and all the ones that say west are included; Here's how to do this - [4]

p.s. there's more ways to write down the names of the area and while Shomron bumps up the findings another 300K, Google doesn't know how to handle "Iudea" and finds 470 million pages using the word 'Idea' instead. Warm regards, JaakobouChalk Talk 08:27, 3 March 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for the advice, I'll update shortly. As a side note, I didn't realize putting something in brackets could specify a term as a whole as the search result. Master&Expert (Talk) 08:30, 3 March 2009 (UTC)

Hi, Masters. Thanks for posting on my talk page. You are right I could edit the page, but I just do not want to have an editing war with the other. I looked at your link (thanks) but it is for frats/sororities rather than the disputed honor societies. Where do we get the third party experts for this type of college society? Any advice for an objective, knowledgeable 3PO?Angtitimo (talk) 03:19, 12 March 2009 (UTC)

Shoot, sorry. As you can no doubt see, I'm not an expert on these sort of things. I'm honestly not sure where else to find an expert on the subject. Perhaps you could find some help at the reference desk. Probably would be best suited for the "Humanities" section. Master&Expert (Talk) 04:19, 12 March 2009 (UTC)

Military history Coordinator Elections

As a member of the WikiProject who is running for coordinator it is so go great to see people getting involved. Keep Up the Good work. Have A Great Day! Lord R. T. Oliver The Olive Branch 14:01, 21 March 2009 (UTC)

Re: Question

Hi Master&Expert. :) I personally think it's fine for non-admins to decline blatantly incorrect reports (such as an account with no edits). However, more involved cases usually require the attention of an administrator. Common sense applies, of course. Hope this helps! Regards, –Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 23:31, 21 March 2009 (UTC)

Thank you for your response. Would "blatantly obvious" reports also entail accounts that have been insufficiently warned (obviously so)? Master&Expert (Talk) 23:35, 21 March 2009 (UTC)
If they haven't been warned properly, you could tag it with {{AIV|new}} and wait for an admin to remove it. –Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 23:39, 21 March 2009 (UTC)
M&E--I think you should file an RFA. You'd be a great admin. You have keen insight, judgment, and fairness. I even think you are arbitrator material. I'll nom you but the choice is yours. As for your question, the general rule is users experienced in that area (AFD AIV IFD etc) who are trusted may close non controversial filings. RlevseTalk 23:41, 21 March 2009 (UTC)
Actually, I was thinking the same thing. –Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 23:44, 21 March 2009 (UTC)
I really appreciate the offer, Rlevse and Juliancolton. Though at this time, I don't know if the community would entrust me with the tools, based on edit count (I think I have around 1600 edits total, I'm not sure though). I admit I have thought about it quite a bit, though, and I could see myself accepting an offer in the future - it would certainly make maintenance work a lot easier. Thank you for your high praise - it's really appreciated. :) Master&Expert (Talk) 23:49, 21 March 2009 (UTC)
That edit count is a bit low for RFA, so I'd say work to beef it up, work in admin areas, and work on good and featured items and you should be fine. I'd say get at least 2000 edits and then file and RFA. Feel free to ask Julian and I to conom you. RlevseTalk 01:41, 22 March 2009 (UTC)
Believe me, as an RfA regular, I am well aware of how RfA go-ers frequently "look at" (viciously scrutinize, over-analyze, etc.) a user's contributions, and I'm well aware of the standards they use. ;) I'll try my best to follow your advice, though. Though be warned - I am not the type to stay focused on improving an article for too long (I've made attempts before). Are there any strategies for getting an article featured? Master&Expert (Talk) 01:53, 22 March 2009 (UTC)
Be thorough, write well (someone like Julian copyedit if you are not good at it --I bug him all the time ;-) ), solid refs, good formatting, good image documentation. Pick an article related to what you want to work on and follow that as a guide. Ask others for help. Kanonkas is an admin and he got there mainly because of image work, very little article work. RlevseTalk 02:23, 22 March 2009 (UTC)
Maybe I should ask others to gather refs, considering I find it hard to search in books for them. I find myself pretty interested in Mediterranean history these days, specifically the Ottoman Empire. I wonder if I could find somebody who might share that interest, and who might have references to put in an article I've been working on (or was, I haven't worked on it in about a month). The article in question needs more images and references, and needs some expansion. Is there anywhere where I could find somebody who might be willing to assist me in editing the article? Master&Expert (Talk) 03:11, 22 March 2009 (UTC)
Google is your friend finding refs, but be wary of the shaky ones. Try people active here: Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/Ottoman military history task force and Wikipedia:WikiProject Turkey and perhaps other wiki projects. RlevseTalk 03:28, 22 March 2009 (UTC)
I've checked those before, but there doesn't appear to be very many active editors in either. But I'll give it my best shot. :) Master&Expert (Talk) 03:31, 22 March 2009 (UTC)
I've found that the key to successful article writing is finding a topic you're passionate about—for me, that would be meteorology. Once you've done so, the rest is relatively smooth-sailing if you have friends to help along the way. –Juliancolton Tropical Cyclone 03:36, 22 March 2009 (UTC)
Well, you've found my two biggest problems. The first is that I don't have too many things I have a passion for, the second is that there aren't enough people who share the same interests as me to assist me in writing articles. Master&Expert (Talk) 03:38, 22 March 2009 (UTC)

Re Request for help

Hey FayssalF. I notice you are a member of The Ottoman Empire MILHIST task force, and I was wondering if you might be interested in helping improve the quality of one of its articles that I have been working on. Master&Expert (Talk) 16:28, 22 March 2009 (UTC)

Hi Master&Expert. In fact I am busy with [Africa-India relations]. However, I can leave it aside for the moment since it is just a 'start article'. I also haven't touched the Ottoman subject since I finished up Portal:Military history of the Ottoman Empire. But well, if you are enthusiastic about it then let's do it. -- FayssalF - Wiki me up® 18:08, 22 March 2009 (UTC)
The article is Rise of the Ottoman Empire. It needs references, and some expansion. Plus I think it could use more images. I notice you've already done some work on it. :) Master&Expert (Talk) 18:50, 22 March 2009 (UTC)
I am looking at some references and getting them ready. The article needs some prose to get rid of the timeline style. That's a challenge :) -- FayssalF - Wiki me up® 19:23, 22 March 2009 (UTC)
It most definitely is. I suppose it can't be under the sultan headings, then. Master&Expert (Talk) 20:33, 22 March 2009 (UTC)

re:Literature

In that case, you may be interested in the discussion at the bottom of Wikipedia talk:Featured article criteria; I'm doing a poor (perhaps unmotivated) job of arguing that many of those outside high research are somewhat unfamiliar with the broader definition of literature, not to mention that many high schools are trying to distinguish "literature" from "electronic sources". — Deckiller 04:23, 30 March 2009 (UTC)

Libby Booth

I am very new to wikipedia as well and hope I am doing this correctly.

A few weeks ago you helped to approve the deletion of an article I wrote on a local artist named Libby Booth.

Not only did this article take me a very long time to write (as I said, I am new to this), but I was quite annoyed that it was removed so quickly by simply "googling" her name to see if she is a notable artist.

Perhaps I am naive about how this sight works, and perhaps I need to explain my own credentials in writing this.

I am a history professor who has lived in the Central Michigan area for nearly 25 years. Booth is by far the best artist I have ever seen in all of this time, and in terms of her local notability, she is considered the top artist of the Michigan tri-city area and is hopefully going to be known nationally quite soon.

While her name may not produce many google hits, this is NO WAY reflects how popular or well known she is in this area.

Outside of publishing books, I have published over 20 professional encyclopedia articles and am well aware of who should or should not have documentation about their careers and life.

This whole evaluation and deleting process seems rather haphazard (perhaps it is not and I am naive about this format), but I would appreciate it if you could possibly remove this article from its current deleted status.

I would really like to contribute more to this site in the future, but this initial experience is leaving me very frustrated.

Any advice or comments?

Sincerely, Dr. Joel A. Lewis

Hello Mr. Lewis, and welcome to Wikipedia. I am sorry to see an article you worked hard at has been deleted, and I understand how you feel. I assume the deletion discussion you are referring to is Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Libby Booth. I cannot undelete or view deleted content — these technical functions are limited to administrators — and I have a very poor memory of the article. It apears it was deleted due to a lack of reliable secondary sources. Wikipedia adheres to rather strict notability guidelines (particularly on people), and as such we can only include biographies of people who have received enough coverage in the press to verify their notability. I'm sorry for the abruptness of my comment to the discussion as well. I hope you don't feel too discouraged by this unfortunate event, Wikipedia values your contributions a lot. We'd love it if you stayed. Happy editing, Master&Expert (Talk) 02:39, 1 April 2009 (UTC)

Well, that's good, but I was wondering how much time you had available because the request page for Editor Assistance has very few volunteers that help out and we are always looking for new people to help. It's a great way to help other Wikipedians (I don't know how many people actually use that list) and at the same time gain experience in many issues (etiquette, 3RR, NPOV, sockpuppets, etc) that are common on Wikipedia. If you can't help that's fine but it's always good to see new volunteers. Thanks anyway! Fleetflame 02:18, 13 April 2009 (UTC)

Hi M&E, thanks for your kind note. Although I do participate regularly at RFA, I have little desire for the tools myself. I have a somewhat prurient interest to view deleted pages, but that's not really an appropriate reason to be an admin. The rest of the tools don't interest me. My RfA

Thank you for participating in my "RecFA", which passed with a final tally of 153/39/22. There were issues raised regarding my adminship that I intend to cogitate upon, but I am grateful for the very many supportive comments I received and for the efforts of certain editors (Ceoil, Noroton and Lar especially) in responding to some issues. I wish to note how humbled I was when I read Buster7's support comment, although a fair majority gave me great pleasure. I would also note those whose opposes or neutral were based in process concerns and who otherwise commented kindly in regard to my record.
I recognise that the process itself was unusual, and the format was generally considered questionable - and I accept that I was mistaken in my perception of how it would be received - but I am particularly grateful for those whose opposes and neutrals were based in perceptions of how I was not performing to the standards expected of an administrator. As much as the support I received, those comments are hopefully going to allow me to be a better contributor to the project. Thank you. Very much. LessHeard vanU (talk) 13:11, 24 May 2009 (UTC)
