Basavaraja fort was a island fortres situated in the arabian sea of the cost of Uttarakannada district,Honnavar taluk in karnataka state.This island can be reached by boats,fishing trollers.This island is just 4Km from Honnavar,3Km from Sharavati bay & just 1Km from Pavinakurva village (an island which also has a beach).Journey will take about 30 to 45Minutes from Honnavar and 15 to 20 Minutes from Pavinakurva village. The landing place is at the south,East part of the island at the old entrance of the fort. This island has a total area of 19Hecters and height of the island would be approx 45 to 50Mtr from the sea level.Top of the island is a flato and covered with dry grass also planty of tree's can be seen only at the sloping part of the island, this island has plenty of wells with fresh ,sweet water.

Temple

This island has a temple constructed by the ruler between 16 and 17 century.Now also people especially fishermans and boat owners are visting this temple with their families once in a year on Makarashanranthi day (Hindu Festival)on 14th of Janaury to perform a pooja to protect,guide them from natures harm throughout the year while working on the sea.

This fort is surrounded by a strong fortification raised by gigantic laterite blocks also this fort has eight ruined mounted guns.

History

The fort was construceted during Vijayanagar rule in 1690,Keladi ruler Shivappa nayaka captured it and named it Basavaraja Durga in memory of Keladi prince Basavaraj.
