Welcome to Wikipedia!!!

Hello Kmzundel! Welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. If you decide that you need help, check out Wikipedia:Where to ask a question, ask me on my talk page, or place {{helpme}} on your talk page and someone will show up shortly to answer your questions. Please remember to sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your name and the date. You may also push the signature button located above the edit window. Finally, please do your best to always fill in the edit summary field. This is considered an important guideline in Wikipedia. Even a short summary is better than no summary. Below are some recommended guidelines to facilitate your involvement. Happy editing! -- Kukini 02:26, 14 December 2006 (UTC)

Editing

Of course you can continue...although you might want to consider using the edit summary. I will clarify below. Kukini 02:41, 14 December 2006 (UTC)

Although I work as a librarian and have access to Academic Index (which indexes articles in Rolling Stone) I am unable to find/verify an article written by Stephen Thanabalan in Rolling Stone Magazine, cited in the Ellis Paul article. (I can't find that he wrote anything in Rolling Stone.) I will continue to try to verify the Rolling Stone reference, but assuming that it cannot be verified, what should happen with the unverified statement? Kmzundel 19:40, 18 December 2006 (UTC)
I'm not sure who you were talking to since you are writing on your own talk page. To be sure your voice is heard you may want to post this sort of thing on someone elses page next time. I happened to still have you on my watch list though and saw the note. Concerning this "Stephen Thanabalan" guy. I think you've stumbled onto something bigger than you thought. I found about 50 articles on wikipedia with statements attributed to this guy and I wonder if any of them can be verified.
I've posted a note on the talk page for the Stephen Thanabalan article and requested that the article on Thanabalan be deleted (see Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Stephen Thanabalan). I'm hoping some other editors will get involved in what looks like a pretty big hoax to me (though I suppose I could be wrong). Thanks for doing the fact-checking. -MrFizyx 21:38, 18 December 2006 (UTC)

Edit Summary Request

I have noted that you edit without an edit summary. Please do your best to always fill in the summary field. This is considered an important guideline in Wikipedia. Even a short summary is better than no summary. An edit summary is even more important if you delete any text; otherwise, people may think you're being sneaky or even vandalizing. Also, mentioning one change but not another one can be misleading to someone who finds the other one more important; add "and misc." to cover the other change(s). Thanks! -- Kukini 02:41, 14 December 2006 (UTC)

No worries...keep reading and working at things...you will figure it out. Administrators are not paid, but volunteers who try to watch over and protect wikipedia. We generally do more to clean things up than anything else, as a group, although most of us get involved in wikipedia policy development (but this is open to all registered users). Keep your chin up! -Kukini 01:44, 15 December 2006 (UTC)

External links

Hi please stop adding external links in the manner that you have done within the Ellis Paul article. External links should in general appear in a section near the end of the article with the heading "== External links ==" and they should be directly relevant to the artilce. E.g. a link to Patty Griffin's home page should only appear in the Patty Griffin article, not the Ellis Paul article. You can discuss other artists in the text by using internal links, e.g. "[[Vance Gilbert]]" will appear as Vance Gilbert. For more you can read the wikipedia policy on external links, (shortcut here: WP:EL). Regards, -MrFizyx 03:12, 14 December 2006 (UTC)

Viewing your contributions

All you need to do to view your contributions is click on "user contributions" when on you user talk page (this one) or your user page. You may also view the contributions of others from their talk pages and user pages. Both messages you left me are located on my talk page. Look there, you will see them. I am going to give them titles (as you didn't) to make it easier for you to see. When commenting on talk pages, if you click on the "+" tab at the top, you will be directed to make a title (and thus edit summary) while you are talking to other users. Many find this approach helpful. -Kukini 15:51, 15 December 2006 (UTC)

Ellis Paul

I cleaned up the refs a bit. Good work! Note how the ref section feeds directly from the refs in <>'s. Kukini 01:28, 21 December 2006 (UTC)

My pleasure...welcome to the editing ohana. Kukini 02:03, 21 December 2006 (UTC)

piping

I also would like to say good work on the Ellis Paul page. The syntax to pipe a link looks like this: "[[David Wilcox (American musician)|David Wilcox]]". There is an essay about these things at WP:PIPE. Most editors are happy to help so feel free to ask little questions like this. Regards, -MrFizyx 03:14, 21 December 2006 (UTC)

Album cover

No worries. Fair-use images comprise a "special case." Actually, we try to minimize the use of such material so that this remains a "free" encyclopedia. However, when illustrating an album's article, such an image does make sense. At any rate, I've been editing a year, and I'm still learning new stuff every day. Don't let it get you discouraged. From the comments I see on your talk page, you're doing good work. Rklawton 19:28, 8 January 2007 (UTC)

Peer review

Unfortunately I'm not very experienced in preparing top-quality articles. I'm more on the photography end of things. I do try to spot and fix obvious problems, vandalism, etc. In general, I like the work you've done. There are some specific, minor, style tweeks I could recommend, but I think it would be faster if I just added them myself and save you the time (later today).

I do have one significant concern - and that's the B&W image used. I really like the image, and it's very nice for the article. However, based on the image's description on its upload page, I'm not at all certain that the uploader holds the appropriate copyrights. It appears to be a scanned image of someone else's work. On the other hand, I searched the web and couldn't find a source, so that's a good sign. You might want to check with the uploader to see where the image came from.

Nice work. I hope this article goes all the way to FA! Rklawton 14:22, 9 January 2007 (UTC)

Yes, it was the file name that gave me pause. Actually, if you just add what you told me to the image's talk page on Commons, that should satisfy everyone (though there is nothing technically wrong with the upload as it stands). Rklawton 15:43, 9 January 2007 (UTC)

I've completed my edits to the article. They comprised generally of wikifying dates (dates appear in various formats if wikified - depending on user preferences), grammar corrections, and copyedits to remove passive verbs. I also removed some redundant information at the end of the article. Overall I'd say you've done a really nice job with this article. There are a few cases where "Paul was invited" could be turned into a more active sentence if only we knew who did the inviting. Cheers, and keep up the good work. Rklawton 23:58, 13 January 2007 (UTC)

Whoops, forgot about that. There you go. --Wizardman 17:27, 10 January 2007 (UTC)

Do not unlink full dates in this (or any) article. International readers see these dates in a format that is appropriate to their region. Some see today, for example as 12 January 2007. This only happens when dates are wikified. Lastly, the dates I linked were all full dates, so the other reviewers comments don't apply. I'll go look up the appropriate reference. But in the mean time, don't waste your time removing links. I've got over 13,000 edits in this language alone (and several thousand more in over 40 other languages), so I know what I'm talking about. Rklawton 03:05, 14 January 2007 (UTC)
Before you screw things up any further, please read this:WP:DATE Rklawton 03:10, 14 January 2007 (UTC)

I thought I had done my homework regarding adding sound samples to the Ellis Paul article, but they have been removed with no comments left on the article's discussion page. Please help me figure out what I did not do correctly. I am trying so very hard to abide by the Wiki guidelines and Manual of Style. Kmzundel 13:56, 15 January 2007 (UTC)

I am not sure if it should be a copyright violation. ≈Tulkolahten≈≈talk≈ 14:25, 15 January 2007 (UTC)

The log says "for non-commercial use only" - images under this license are no longer allowed to be on wikipedia. Because Wikipedia in some countries is sold on CDs - and it is not a non-commercial purpose. See Jimbo's mail [2]. ≈Tulkolahten≈≈talk≈ 15:44, 15 January 2007 (UTC)

Deleted images

Hi Kmzundel, the images which were uploaded by you, do not satisfy the image use policy. Please read the policy carefully. The images, which are only for non-commercial uses or requiring permission to use, should not be uploaded. Regards, Shyam (T/C) 14:48, 15 January 2007 (UTC)

Absolutely, sound and other media files have also been assumed images. So all the policies for images are also applicable for .ogg (sound) files. Shyam (T/C) 18:38, 15 January 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for helping to tweak the Ellis Paul article. I've seen Westborough spelled both ways in reference to the Old Vienna Kaffeehouse and am fine with the edit. From what I've been told the number of winners in the Kerrville categories has changed many times over the years....so it's hard to say how many "new folk" winners there were in 1994. I'll try to ferret that out. You're right about the 1st Legacy CD which, in my head, I always refer to as Legacy I.  :-) Thanks again. I hope I'm getting close to GA status. The Wiki learning curve has been unbelievable. Who knew?  ;-) Kmzundel 23:45, 17 January 2007 (UTC)
A history of the KFF winners can be found here. Winners in '94 also included Slaid Cleaves. I watched the competition in '95 and '96 and I can assure you that the format hasn't changed lately. I don't know much about rating articles as GA, I haven't gone through that with my own work here yet. It really looks to me like you've done a fine job.
If you're still having fun here you might enjoy improving some other articles on Paul's singer-songwriter peers. Then again, you may want to write short articles for some of his albums. Or you may want to research something completely different. In any case, thanks for your contributions and try to keep having fun. -MrFizyx 16:58, 21 January 2007 (UTC)

Orphaned fair use image (Image:Ellis-Essentialscover.jpg)

Thanks for uploading Image:Ellis-Essentialscover.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. This is an automated message from BJBot 10:51, 2 February 2007 (UTC)

The image was part of the Ellis Paul article for a short period of time, but was removed. See Talk: Ellis Paul then section titled "Album cover". Kmzundel 17:40, 2 February 2007 (UTC)

Ellis Paul

It's not like GA where people review subjects they like. When i nominated Slayer i got no responses for a day or two. If you notice the articles that have heaps of responses are all objects as they don't meet the criteria and have obvious problems, articles that meet criteria are usually quiet for a few days. I'm not sure why there's a picture of him in 2005 in the growing up section, pictures should relate to the section. Some references are also missing date retrieved. M3tal H3ad 07:57, 10 February 2007 (UTC)

Catching vandalism at Ellis Paul

(This is a reply to a post at my talk page.) I frequently check the Recent Changes page and look for suspicious edits, namely those by anonymous IPs. I then just check what was changed and revert (i.e. undo) anything that doesn't look right. Often times vandalism is pretty obvious. The two edits I reverted at Ellis Paul were sneaky in that the size of the changes was small, however the added content was blatantly vandalism. Anyway, that's about it. Regards, Flyguy649 18:53, 11 February 2007 (UTC)

(I moved this from your Userpage to here. Sorry about that! I feel like a tool. I don't know how I managed to leave this there rather than here.) I'm glad the info was useful, though. Flyguy649 14:39, 12 February 2007 (UTC)
(re nominations for FA) I've never participated in nominations/comments for FAs, so sorry, no insight on that one. It could be that no one had strong opinions on the article. Perhaps take a look at WP:FA? and links on that page for other hints. Good luck! Flyguy649 15:11, 12 February 2007 (UTC)

Ellis Paul

Have responded on the FAC page. Very nice work responding to concerns, and on the article overall. There are a few minor issues outstanding re prose; these I can take care of myself. Best, + Ceoil 20:53, 16 February 2007 (UTC)

No problem. I can do that, if you can split the 2000 section in two. + Ceoil 21:29, 16 February 2007 (UTC)
Well, that was fast! + Ceoil 21:40, 16 February 2007 (UTC)
There's no minimum; Raul 564 promotes when he feels a consensus has been reached. He tends to close a block of noms each weekend. I'd guess yours will be closed next weekend. + Ceoil 12:25, 17 February 2007 (UTC)
Wow....really good information to have. Thanks. Kmzundel 13:12, 17 February 2007 (UTC)

As a side issues, music articles tend to be neglected in general during FAC. Seeing as you are now familiar with the process, would you mind having a look at Coil's nomination. It's quite a good article, just needs a little work to bring to standard. Suggestions from you would be great. + Ceoil 12:35, 17 February 2007 (UTC)

Funny....I was going to say to you that when/if I get the FA rating for Ellis Paul, I would then feel qualified to make comments/edits on others' work.  :-) I still feel incredibly green in the Wiki environment and had no idea what I was getting myself into when I agreed to work on the Ellis Paul article two months ago. (Probably a good thing in retrospect.)  :-) But if you have enough confidence in me to ask for my help, I'd be happy to take a look at Coil - sometime over the weekend. I found the Wiki Bio-Musicians group at some point after I started working on the article and asked for help there - don't remember where I was in the process exactly - but did not really get any response and/or acknowledgment that I know of. I thought they would be happy when I reached GA status since there are so few bios as FAs - even less that are music bios. Would you feel comfortable taking this off-list to regular e-mail? Kmzundel 13:12, 17 February 2007 (UTC)
Fire away. + Ceoil 13:35, 17 February 2007 (UTC)
You did fine; all valid points. I wouldn't be too nervous about critiquing others' work, bear in mind that you have written an FA standard article within 3 months of joining the project. That's a great achievement. Provided you are polite and phrase you comments in a helpful spirit, you'll find most editors will appreciate the input. Have you though about your next project bty? I'm hoping to nominate this sometime next month, its only a sketch at present, but I may ask for your openions when its more developed. Best, Ceoil 18:37, 18 February 2007 (UTC)
The page is confusing as I've sandboxed the article, so I can work on it in piece, and leave little notes and reminders around for myself. Re email; go to your preferences, activate your mail and i'll ping you, though there is probably no need to go off wiki on this discussion. Ceoil 22:28, 18 February 2007 (UTC)
That's probably a good idea. If you do activate your email, make sure that the address you use does not give away your name. The internet is funny like that. ;) Ceoil 23:10, 18 February 2007 (UTC)
Re: "I'm pleased since I don't have a clue as to what I'm doing" - If only the rest of life bore such fruit! :) Ceoil 23:06, 20 February 2007 (UTC)

We didn't do it

Meah, it happens, and unfortunately undermines the nomination. In this case I don't think the article's editors are behind it, it seems like the work of some random passer by.

Tisk, kids eh? Ceoil 00:17, 23 February 2007 (UTC)

Ellis Paul FA!!

Congratulations!!!! It's a fine article, and the promotion was well deserved imo.

Hey can you take another look at Coil, I'm close to support on this, a few minor issues to be resolved; but to be fair as your requests were met you should probably close either way, at this point. If your unsure what way to vote, have a quick read of WP:WIAFA and run the article through that checklist. Anyway, take care Ceoil 23:08, 23 February 2007 (UTC)

Kmzundel: Once again, great work with the Ellis Paul bio. You certianly earned the FA status on that one. -MrFizyx 23:25, 23 February 2007 (UTC)
Congrats :) M3tal H3ad 01:35, 24 February 2007 (UTC)
Just to let you know, the front page request for Ellis Pail needs wikilinks as done in the article.. M3tal H3ad 04:09, 4 March 2007 (UTC)

Red links

Mr. Fizyk, I see that you added some internal links to articles that don't exist. Is that how you encouraged editors to write articles? I didn't know it was a good idea to do that. Thanks! Kmzundel 16:33, 6 March 2007 (UTC)
Well, as you might guess, opinions on this topic vary. For an essay on the subject, you can take a look at WP:RED. If nothing else, red links allow you to go to where a page should be and check "what links here". It is my opinion that Jimmy LaFave, The Burns Sisters, Joel Raphael, and Sarah Lee Guthrie & Johnny Irion should all be included in Wikipedia (LaFave in particular already has quite a collection of red links). All exceed the minimum criteria in the music notability guideline and have been written about in many independent, third-party sources. I would hope that we could create some short articles on each of them before your article appears on the wikipedia main page. So I guess, yes, I was encouraging you to think about them. :)
Another thing you might consider doing is writing a few short articles on Paul's most important/most frequently reviewed albums. If this interests you, take a look at WP:ALBUM for suggestions on where to begin.
Ellis is a cool guy. He handed me his guitar to play once when I asked him about an unusual tuning he had just used on stage. Your article is a nice in-depth read for someone wanting to learn about his music. Adding more supporting articles would also improve wikipedia's breadth on the topic. Regards -MrFizyx 17:08, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

I've moved the page from Jimmy Lafave to Jimmy LaFave. I remember being surprised when I learned how easy it was to do this. From the article page you click the "move" tab (look at the top of your screen between "history" and "watch") then you just follow the directions. Thanks for starting those pages. I think I can help add to them. -MrFizyx 16:14, 7 March 2007 (UTC)

I'm glad you were interested enough to start a few new biographies. However, I'm concerned that the way you went about it could get us in trouble. It appears that you have simply cut and pasted material from other web sites to create these articles. Doing this (even with a citation) is usually a copyright vioaltion. (See: WP:COPYVIO) Ideally we would like to mix infromation from many different sources to create articles just like you did with Ellis Paul. At minimum, we need to significantly rewrite the text. If we leave them in their current form, they may become a target for deletion. I have some additional sources for these artists and will try to work on the articles when I can, but if you have some time to fix the articles, please do. Thanks! -MrFizyx 22:52, 15 March 2007 (UTC)
Sorry, i didn't mean for that to feel like a hand-smacking. -MrFizyx 00:00, 16 March 2007 (UTC)

You can't go wrong with Richard Shindell. Did he have a "band" or did he play solo. It seems he often brings along accordionist, Rad Lorkovic (another very nice guy). I started a page for South of Delia a while ago. Waiting for my copy to come...

LaFave photos

If you don't like the layout of the photo that you added you could crop the bottom of it. I've added a photo also; although yours is much better. I notice that he is standing in the same place and wearing the same clothing as in the photo that you took! Are your sure that your shot was taken in 2006 and not 2005?!? -MrFizyx 22:06, 4 April 2007 (UTC)

Missing Jimmy LaFave photo

Mr. Fizyk, do you have any idea why my Jimmy LaFave infobox photo is gone? I took that photo and am sure I indicated that I owned it when I uploaded the file. I didn't do anything different on that upload than I did on the Joel Rafael, Sarah Lee Guthrie, and Ellis Paul photos...which were not remeoved. The Jimmy LaFave photo (file) seems to be gone. (And the History page does not show that it was removed.) Kmzundel 00:13, 2 May 2007 (UTC)

KMZ, this is very strange. I don't know why it no longer appears in the info box for the Jimmy LaFave article. When I go to the page, Image:JimmyLaFave4.jpg from the search bar I can view the document just fine. I have seen something like this once before, it may be some sort of error on Wikipedia's servers. -MrFizyx 01:18, 2 May 2007 (UTC) [p.s. If the problem does not correct itself, I'll try to look at it again tomorrow.]

Featured article

Hey, I saw your request about protecting Ellis Paul on WP:RFPP. I think what happened is that an admin protected the page against moves, but not from editing - hence the vandalism spree. I fixed the protection so it is now fully protected and shouldn't be vandalized further (at least, till the protection expires tomorrow). Could you check the page to make sure I've protected the correct version? I want to be sure I didn't protect a version containing vandalism. If it needs to be fixed, let me know or use the {{editprotected}} template to request an edit. Thanks for catching that problem. MastCell Talk 04:54, 22 May 2007 (UTC)

Unprotection

As you obviously already know, I unprotected this article as soon as I saw MastCell's full protection. This is just a matter of policy/precedent that the main page featured article is never fully protected. Only in the rarest of cases is the article even semi-protected. Personally, I agree with you that the TFA should be protected, but so long as we allow anon users to edit, that's not going to happen. Every article that is featured on the main page receives immense vandalism, but it's always reverted quickly. No real harm is done. I understand your frustration, but you can't let it get to you. Allowing others to edit our work is part of the deal. - auburnpilot talk 17:12, 22 May 2007 (UTC)

I only asked for semi-protection (not full-protection). Of course I appreciate and want others to help edit...but I don't appreciate or want vandalism. Thanks for your reply. Kmzundel 17:15, 22 May 2007 (UTC)
It looks like you've made it through the day alive. Congratulations on your hard work, and hopefully next time will not go so badly. - auburnpilot talk 00:29, 25 May 2007 (UTC)

Re: Tornado girl

Don't worry, it's nothing personal, it's just been a long day with countless vandal revisions, and I haven't had any time to discuss changes which might be legit. In general though, on scientific articles we try to have scientific links. One place it might be good for is Cultural significance of tornadoes. Happy editing! -RunningOnBrains 16:36, 24 May 2007 (UTC)

MPFAP

It would be a terrible shame if you didn't continue to improve wikipedia, in the way that you did with Ellis Paul. I am frustrated too, in fact, I left in a fit of pique, earlier this week, but alot of good people persuaded me back. I know it's disappointing to have our hopes put back, but by continuing to add good material and remove bad material we can still make an impact. DrKiernan 14:11, 19 June 2007 (UTC)

Thank you for your words of encouragement and support. I will continue to edit, but I honestly don't think I can go through the TFA experience again. To have worked so long....and have such anticipation...only to have the article trashed 105 times (or whatever the number) was just awful. Especially when I didn't have a clue to expect it! Talk about being ignorant. :-) Kmzundel 15:08, 19 June 2007 (UTC)

Hey

Long time no talk; how are you these days. Was disappointed that your big day on the main page was ruined by kids. Ack, in my day...Best Ceoil 17:08, 4 August 2007 (UTC)

Hey back.  :-) Yes, my big day was ruined. I had no idea TFA is vandalized daily. (Probably a good thing that I didn't know in advance). I've been trying to participate in the discussion regarding Main Page Protection, but it's like beating one's head against a brick wall. It's such a no-brainer to me that TFA should be protected at least for 24-hours. Good luck with Nick Drake. I actually ended up asking Raul to consider Ellis Paul for May 22 and he was nice enough to oblige. It wouldn't do you any harm to request a specific date too.  :-) Kmzundel 23:15, 8 August 2007 (UTC)
I took the main page experience on the chin, sht happens. I'd definitely like to see you more active on this website; you did a great job on Ellis Paul; more please. Let me know if I can help in any way. Take care. Ceoil 23:21, 17 August 2007 (UTC)

Roots music welcome

I did not inadvertently remove the external link for Ellis Paul's song, but I appreciate the good faith. Because the information is pertinent, however, I should have added it to the Tributes and references... section, which I've just done now (without the external link, however, since that goes against style guidelines). I do believe the external link to Ellis Paul's website, however, gives undue weight to Paul's song; the many, many song tributes to Phoenix are not linked to. In order to pacify everyone, the article would have to link to each one in turn, turning the article into a link farm. I hope this change will be a good compromise, and if there's an article for the song, please feel free to add it. I've never heard of Ellis Paul before, and I see that you've made the article an FA -- nice work, by the way. :) Take care, María (críticame) 00:19, 29 August 2007 (UTC)

Jimmy Lafave

I appreciate all the attention you've given to the Jimmy Lafave article. Except for one thing. I wish you hadn't mentioned Lafave's comments regarding Stillwater and Ley lines. I had no idea that Lafave believed in such silliness and I have to admit I respect him a bit less now.

Well, okay. That comment is interesting and notable, I suppose. But still.... Phiwum 13:25, 30 August 2007 (UTC)

Guthrie Festival

Hello, I believe you'll find this useful:

http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Woody_Guthrie_Folk_Festival&action=history

This is the history of the article Woody_Guthrie_Folk_Festival (which currently redirects to another article). If you access the latest revision and then start to edit, you should be fine. However, please be aware that in order to justify a separate article, you'll need to provide sources which assert independent coverage (articles, reviews and so on). It's possible those who edit Woody Guthrie may be of help in advising on this. Scratch that, I was under the impression you were a new user. Cheers. --Mark H Wilkinson (t, c) 17:48, 14 September 2007 (UTC)
