You nailed it. The core problem of Wikipedia is how to handle conflicts, and there is no solution. Consensus doesn't work in practice and yes, you will spend most of your time having to deal with rude and incompetent people. Unfortunately, rudeness is widely accepted here, so you can expect lots of personal attacks, strange insinuations and much much more.
It's hard work, with little reward.
