Tropical cyclone

Many edits were made to improve inline sourcing, per another reviewer, which led to some changes to the text of the article. If you could take another look at the article, it would be appreciated. I'm finding it disconcerting that oppose votes remain despite changes being made to fulfill the opposers requests. I'd really like the article to get to FA on its third attempt. Thanks for comments so far but I was wondering if you could elaborate a little on the comments you made about POV issues please. Welcome to the second edition of the WikiProject Severe weather newsletter. In this edition of the newsletter we will detail the upcoming severe weather season, touch on last month's tornado outbreaks, and look at a new proposal for formatting tornado outbreak articles.

Featured story

This month's featured story has two parts, the first part detailing the upcoming severe weather season, and the second part will detail a new proposal for tornado outbreak articles.

With numerous outbreaks already, this season may very well be one of the worst ever. First, a review of past seasons. Last year's severe weather was mainly focused on the western High Plains, with no classic Oklahoma tornado outbreaks. Most of the outbreaks last season had supercells forming along either a cold front or dry line in western Kansas and the panhandles of Oklahoma and Texas. Most of these storms moved due north or northeast, producing flooding problems. The severe weather season was especially boring farther east in the Midwest where only an occasional squall line moved through. I personally missed the Greensburg tornado because I went to Saint Louis on May 5 to watch a baseball game. I can still remember seeing the high risk in Kansas on the monitor in the rest stop. 2006 was a little bit more active and widespread. As always, the NWS and SPC did an amazing job of forecasting the storms. Back to the future (ha!) the CPC outlooks are saying warmer and drier than normal in tornado alley. However, it looks to be a bit more exciting severe weather season for people farther east in the Midwest (including me) with warmer than normal temperatures and equal chances of being above and below forecast values, which usually means normal amounts. As local TV stations have pointed out, we should all be prepared. I know we have all heard it, but it still needs to be repeated. Two words: Weather Radio Everyone should have a tone-alerted weather radio, SAME if you perfer to not be woken up for a flash flood watch 50 miles from you. Weather radios will also go off if your local emergency management agency requests a statement be issued by the National Weather Service for things such as evacuations. (Note: Even though there was a gas leak in my town with evacuations, a prodcut was not issued by the National Weather Service, even when they are issued to request people to stay off roads.) If you are under a tornado warning or a high end severe thunderstorm warning (i.e.: 70 m.p.h. winds +) go to an interior room on the lowest floor of your building, preferably a basement. Stay away from windows and any other hazardous objects. I may not have included it all, so obey the safety rules in warnings from the National Weather Service. Spotters should call the NWS immediately upon observing severe weather. If the event was borderline severe, use E-Spotter (If your office uses it). Remember the #1 thing: Stay Safe this season anywhere you are, from chasing in Oklahoma to watching it unfold on TV in Ohio.

New Standards

With the upcoming severe weather season, User:Southern Illinois SKYWARN has proposed new standards for tornado outbreak articles.

Overview States the number of tornadoes, fatalities. Briefly describes any strange events and records set. (Required)

Meteorological synopsis Describes weather leading up to the outbreak and SPC products issued.(Required)

Confirmed tornadoes Tornado table, no text besides that in the table (Required, should be split into list if very large)

Significant storms (Variable name) Describes the most significant storms and tornadoes (Required)

Aftermath Describes aftermath in detail, should also include disaster declerations (Required)

Non-thunderstorm effects/Non-tornadic effects Use the first if snow or other non-thunderstorm events occurred (Optional) The latter should be standard on all pages describing effects from a squall line, hail, flash flooding, or other non-tornadic effects (Required)

Oddities/Records Only used if necessary (Optional)

This month's featured member is User:JForget The following text is from User:Southern Illinois SKYWARN's nomination This user has started numerous articles on older, significant tornado outbreaks that met notability requirements. JForget recently received a barnstar (even if it was from me) for his work in WikiProject Severe Weather. JForget is one of the most tireless contributors to the project and deserves to be this month's featured member.

Significant storms

Obviously the first order of business for this section is the massive, devastating tornado outbreak on February 5, or Super Tuesday. 82 tornadoes and 59 fatalities were confirmed in association with this outbreak. This was the deadliest outbreak since the United States-Canadian Outbreak in 1985 which killed 88. Tornado watches, many of them Particularly dangerous situation watches at one point extended from the Ohio Valley to the Gulf Coast. Instability and shear values were extreme, especially for February. This was a very well forecasted and warned event, despite media reports of people receiving no warning. I am sorry, but I am going to rant a little about this. The National Weather Service field offices and the Storm Prediction Center did an amazing job of warning of this event despite the speed of the storms. Many National Weather Service offices held at least one conference call with emergency managers, media, spotter groups, and other interested parties. I am outraged that the media reported this as if the forecasters were asleep at the wheel, while this really was one of the best forecasted events ever. Now while we will have to wait for the likely service assessment to come out, I believe that all numbers from the false-alarm rate to the probability of detection were above national averages. Now that I am done with my little editorial, I will get back to the outbreak. A high risk was issued by the Storm Prediction Center on the morning of February 5 for most of Arkansas, the first such issuance in February since 1998. Later in the morning, it was further was extended to include western Kentucky, northwestern Mississippi, the Missouri Bootheel, West Tennessee, and Far Southern Illinois (Close to where I live, Yikes!). A moderate risk surrounded this area, where the squall line was the main problem. A massive squall line developed in the Great Plains prompting only a few warnings at first, but when it came into the area where the cap had broken and unfortunately supercells went through, it exploded producing strong winds, hail, and a few tornadoes.

Now for the supercells. Supercells began to develop late in the day in Arkansas and Missouri after the cap broke much later than expected. These supercells began to move north and east and then became tornadic. A record five tornado emergencies were issued in association with this outbreak. One supercell developed to the southwest of Memphis and devastated eastern and southern suburbs. Other notable supercells had tracks of over 200 miles and produced several tornadoes. Other outbreaks struck in the middle of the month throughout the south, especially along the Gulf Coast. Only one death has been confirmed in association with any of these outbreaks, however extensive property damage occurred.

One thing about the NTROP newsletter, be sure to make it into a template rather than changing the whole thing to table, I had to delete the newsletter from my talk page as it included any messages posted below it. I personally like the format of WP:SEVERE newsletter at the start of the month, and the NTROP newsletter in the middle. The backlog at Good Article Nominations is 185 unreviewed articles. Out of 237 total nominations, 42 are on hold, and 10 are under review. Please go to WP:GAN and review an article or three as soon as you have a chance!

The oldest unreviewed articles are: Ian Browne (cyclist), Tony Marchant, Reginald fitz Jocelin, Annie Russell, Brodie Croyle, and Jimmy Moore.

The top five categories with the largest backlogs are: Sports and recreation (39 articles), Theatre, film, and drama (34 articles), Transport (23 articles), Music (21 articles), Politics and government (18 articles), Culture and society (13 articles), Places (13 articles), and World history (12 articles).

The backlog at Good Article Reassessment currently stands at 13 articles up for re-review.

If every participant of WikiProject Good Articles could review just one article in the next week, the backlog would be almost eliminated!

GA Sweeps Update

Two members joined the sweeps team this month. They are Jwanders and jackyd101. Jwanders swept Physics sub-category quickly and is now sweeping "Astronomy and astrophysics". Meanwhile, jackyd101 is sweeping "Armies, military units and legal issues".

During February, 66 Good Articles were reviewed. Including those articles that were under GAR or on hold, 33 were kept as GA, 21 delisted, 17 currently on hold or at GAR, and 1 was exempted as they are now Featured Articles.

Reviewer of the Month

Blnguyen is the GAN Reviewer of the Month for February, based on the assessments made by Epbr123 on the number and thoroughness of the reviews made by individual reviewers each week. Blnguyen is from South Australia and has been editing Wikipedia since 2005. One GA Requirement - The Lead Section

In this issue, we will focus on one of the requirements for good articles: a good article article should follow Wikipedia's guideline on lead sections. So what does this guideline say, why does it say what it does, and how can good article reviewers help?

The lead section is particularly important, because for many readers, it is the only part of the article which they will read. For instance, they may have come to the article by following a wikilink in another article simply to obtain a quick overview before they continue reading the original article. They may only read the first paragraph, or even the first sentence. On the other hand, one of the joys of Wikipedia is the way that it embodies the endlessly branching tree of knowledge; if a lead is well written, it may encourage even such a reader to read on and learn something new.

This is reflected in the terminology: "lead" is a word taken from journalism, where it recognized that many readers will only read the beginning of a newspaper article, and so it is important to convey the key points first, before going into detail. Note that "lead", in this sense, is pronounced as in "leading question" and is sometimes spelled as "lede" by journalists to distinguish it from lead, the metal, which was once very important in typesetting. Wikipedia supports both spellings.

Wikipedia:Lead section is written with all this in mind, and describes two different roles for the lead: first, it should introduce the topic; second it should summarize the article. This is not always as easy as it seems; indeed, it is almost impossible to write a good lead if the article itself does not cover the topic well. It has a side benefit that an article which satisfies this guideline is probably also broad: if the lead is both a good introduction and a summary, then the article probably covers the main points.

The good article process is often the first place in which an article is judged against this criterion, yet many current good articles may not meet it. A common fault is that the lead is purely an introduction, while the rest of the article contains other information, which should be summarized in the lead, but isn't.

So, how can reviewers help to improve this? One approach is to read the rest of the article, and not the lead, first. Make a note of the significant points discussed in the article. There is usually at least one important issue in each section. Then, go back to the lead and ask the following questions:

Does the first sentence of the lead define the topic, as described in the article?
Is the most important information mentioned in the first paragraph?
Is the lead a suitable length for the article? The lead guideline recommends 2–4 paragraphs depending on the article length, but judgment is more important than counting.
Are each of the significant topics that you noted mentioned in the lead?

If the answer to each of these questions is "yes", then the article probably meets the guideline. If not, you may be able to fix it yourself by summarizing the article. If you can't, then it suggests that there are not only problems with the lead, but also the rest of the article. That is the beauty of Wikipedia:Lead section.

Finally, there isn't universal agreement on whether the lead should contain inline citations. As long as the material in the lead is developed and cited elsewhere in the article, then inline citation is not required. There are exceptions, the most significant being quotations and controversial material about living persons.

Well, this is somewhat GA-related but at the same time not totally GA-related. However, I think this is important. Thanks to everyone who supported me at my 2nd RfA. It passed unanimously at 79 support, 0 oppose, 0 neutral. As many are impressed by my work in Good Articles processes, I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone giving me a very enjoyable time at GA. There are 2 people that I want to explicitly say thank you to. They are Nehrams2020 and Epbr123. They patiently taught me how to do GA reviews properly in summer 2007. I couldn't achieve better without them. Now that I have the mop and the bucket, some of my time will be working on reducing Commons image backlog. Nevertheless, you will still see me once in a while in matters related to GA.

You probably already know this, but there are three different RSMC's in the Australian region. Perhaps it might be good to divide the names in User:Juliancolton/List of retired Australian cyclone names apart by city; that is, have one section for Darwin retired names, one ofr Brisbane, and one for Perth. Well, I did put a source on that page, except I had no idea how to complete the reference site, even though i apparently used the correct syntax. NY hurricane list

I've done a bit of copyediting on List of New York hurricanes, and I see that help has come from elsewhere as well. I noticed that the article includes three GIFs, which are deprecated except for animations. I didn't change any of them, but Hurricane Bob has a good one that could be substituted for the top image, and the other two could be converted to JPG or PNG. I could help with this if you like. I just kinda going through the same thing as you. I am in a little conflict with an admin, who practically believes in no rules on Wikipedia. This stirred up some feelings from an old conflict, with another admin. I was a mediator in this case. The admin almost went to ArbCom for other incivility, but alas all the other admins wanted to protect their buddy. Talking it out helped alot, thanks. Image file conversions

Paint.NET, available free here on the Internet, will do the conversions on computers running Windows. Ditto for Photoshop. The procedure is to download the existing image from Wikipedia or the Commons to your home computer, convert the image to the desired format, re-upload, and insert the new image in the desired place(s) in one or more articles. Article tagging

Whenever a subproject tag is added to a particular page (flood, hurricane, non-tropical), it has been the custom to remove the meteorology tag since the subproject tag also has a link to the meteorology project. It eliminates repetition. Thegreatdr (talk) 16:17, 14 March 2008 (UTC)

As for the DRC, I'm hoping to get in touch with Jim Hoekema and get a pic of the inside, then add a section on its current rehabilitation issues, update the infobox to {{infobox religious building}} and (ideally) get a pic from when Hillary Clinton visited (I was there that day covering it as a reporter, so this article means a lot to me). Peer review idea

Hi, I have made a proposal that no peer review request be archived without some response. To aid in this, there is a new list of PR requests at least one week old that have had no repsonses beyond a semi-automated peer review. This list is at Wikipedia:Peer review/backlog.

There are just over 100 names on the PR volunteers page, so I figure if each of these volunteers reviewed just one or two PR requests without a response from the list each month, it would easily take care of the "no response" backlog (as there have been 2 or 3 such unanswered requests a day on average).

If you would be able to help out with a review or two a month from the "no responses" backlog list that would be great (and much appreciated). Please discuss questions, comments, or ideas at the PR talk page and thanks in advance for your help, Ruhrfisch _><>°^° 00:23, 16 March 2008 (UTC)

St. Patrick's Day

Rome moved the celebrations to this past Saturday March 15 this year (as well as a number of large cities in the United States), because it is apparently not "kosher" to celebrate the holiday between Palm Sunday and Easter, and is the first time it has been moved since 1940. I responded as well. We need to hash this out. How can he, or anyone, possibly double or triple the size of this article without restating facts? Charley impacted a small area of Texas and northeast Mexico. There are only five TCDs for him to work off of for storm history. The storm didn't live that long. When I created the Texas hurricane history in real time (1997-1999), there was very little information available concerning Charley. Last I checked, the only size criteria for GA involved sections not being stubs. I do agree on filling out the references more...but not on cite web being a must for GA. If it were, I would never have been able to have any articles I submit for GAC pass, since I don't use that style of referencing. Thegreatdr (talk) 14:45, 19 March 2008 (UTC)

Oh snap, the DEA is an admin

I would like to thank you for your participation in my recent RfA, which I'm very glad to say was successful at 81/7/0. Some of the very best that Wikipedia has to offer came out to support or oppose me and the kind words from all the editors has really given me confidence to be an admin and I can't wait to start.
