Where to start on referencing

I was initially puzzled by the post above mine, but I now see that you asked twice about the same article.

Both of us gave you advice about referencing - that is important to address. You can refer to the links either of us gave, but I just looked at the Wikipedia:Referencing for beginners, and it is probably the best place to start.--SPhilbrickT 22:51, 5 July 2010 (UTC)

I love your enthusiasm

I love your enthusiasm, but it might be a bit premature to be giving others advice, especially on references. Ironically, you are doing something I very much want to encourage; I obtained a file of people who asked questions at Feedback last year, so I could encourage them to return and repay the favor. I just started this project in the last couple of weeks. However, it does take some time to learn some of the intricacies of this place. One does not "number the footnotes", the numbering is done automatically, if you write the citations in the proper format. I hope this doesn't come across as negative - goodness knows we need more help in the feedback forum, but I hope you will get a little more experience first, or be careful to stick to things you are sure of.--SPhilbrickT 23:08, 5 July 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:OComCU 4c vert.JPG.jpeg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file agreed to license it under the given license.

If you created this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

• make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
• Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-enwikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-enwikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. Portland Parks Photo Blitz!

Because the block on the IP address my account was using was supposed to expire over 3 hours ago:

No, I assure you that Farve Dollar Footlong is not a sockpuppet. However, I know him. He and I were on a shared computer, and when I saw him typing vandalism I tried to stop him, but it was too late. So I was about to revert it, but then ten seconds later Nakon (talk · contribs) reverted it and blocked Farve Dollar Footlong's account as well as the IP address. Hey there

Hey, how about instead of just tagging images for deletion, you take a novel approach and actually help phase in the newer fair use rational templates, it takes the same amount of time as tagging for deletion. The end product is a reference work with images in-place and the reader wins. If you don't want do it for me, imagine your doing it for yourself. That way all you added won't be deleted in 5 years when a new template come along or some new magic-word is demanded in the rationale. Maybe that future person will fix your images, instead of just tagging them for deletion like your doing. If adding the new template is too much of a burden, you could spend an equal amount of your time and notify me on my page that you just tagged an image for deletion. If your just tagging and not fixing or notifying, your just enforcing rules for the sake of enforcing rules. I would rather we work together to have the best reference work available instead of you measuring your success by how many images you tag for deletion each day. --Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ) (talk) 02:10, 20 December 2010 (UTC)

I believe we've gone through this before. If every non-free image you've uploaded is going to be the "person is dead," "to illustrate person at peak of career" kind of thing, just tell me that and I can generally do so instead of tagging images for deletion. If not things will be much more complicated. Unfortunately I have not received much help recently in reviewing the images of your CCI, but that's how it goes. You should read Wikipedia:Copyrights and Wikipedia:Non-free content criteria, so that these scenarios don't develop like this later. Jsayre64 (talk) 02:56, 20 December 2010 (UTC)

The right person

You're the right person; you volunteered, and you've been diligent about it. We all have room to learn about copyright; if it were simple, cases would never get to court because lawyers wouldn't fight. :) Just take it on board, and know that, fwiw, I am still very grateful to you for answering my request for volunteers. I don't know if I'll ever be fully comfortable with our image NFC rules. Some of them make sense to me; others, not so much. Richard has never been particularly gung ho about this process, but my goal has always been just to sort what needs fixing from what's good and call it a day so that there are no more lingering concerns.

Anyway, I'm heading out of town tomorrow, so if I don't get a chance before then, let me wish you a Merry Christmas, presuming that doing so is appropriate. If not, happy winter holiday of your choice. :D --Moonriddengirl ^(talk) 20:30, 22 December 2010 (UTC)
