Canadian Flags

Whoops! Didn't realize that was your user page...glad you're ok with that. I believe the shade of red stayed the same in the flags, officially. In practice, depended on material used. The main differences in the 1924 ensign and the 1957 ensign were the maple leaves (1924 green, 1957 red), but also some other minor points - the woman on the Irish harp had her breasts obscured in the 1957 flag, the Scottish rampant lion had the border changed from one line to two. With further regard to the flags, I changed all instances I felt were necessary in the Olympic pages (and page that linked to the red-maple leaf flag got changed) - EXCEPT those in which a template was formed. The flags were so small that I didn't bother to change them - also the template was used also in instances where the flag with red maple leaves was correct, so at some point, someone will need to do a seperate template, one for the 1924 flag, one for the 1957 flag. By the way, I read the thing about the 5000m team race and decided to create an article about Stanley Rowley. He is very remarkable in that he won gold medals for two countries and I will try to get this featured in "Did you know?". Feel free improve the wording if necessary.

No. Your close was so flagrantly out of process that I entirely justifiably re-deleted it. There was near-unanimous support for it being deleted (with only the author and one other person voting keep), most of those being entirely informed voters who agreed that it was indeed vanity. You then decided that you knew better than all of the Australians who voted (and thus decided that he "must" be notable when you had no idea) and attempted to override the very obvious consensus. AfD closings

Well, I started from the bottom and went up (for no apparent reason), and after looking a few, here's some comments on some individual closings:

• Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Joshua Gardner - should have left this one for an admin.
• Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Afshar experiment (2nd nomination) - I closed this the first time around, but given the sockpuppetry accusations and whatnot, you should have left it for an admin.
• Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Massimiliano Tacchinardi - this should have been kept per WP:BIO that professional sportspeople who play for teams in the top leagues are worthy of articles, even if it's just two games.
• Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Individualist anarchism and anarcho-capitalism - this one you should have left alone. While you might say that it's an obvious no consensus, that's still not your determination to make.

Basically, as a non-admin, you should limit yourself to obvious keeps (nomination withdrawn, no delete votes or 10–1), merges/redirects, copyvios, and articles that got deleted but the admin forgot to close the discussion. From my own experience before I became an admin, there are still enough of these per day that can keep you pretty busy. We certainly do appreciate all the help we can get, however. howcheng {chat} 21:54, 31 January 2006 (UTC)

• Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Diana albers -- this was a clear keep on the opnions posted, but there was littler participation and the majority of thsoe who participated suggested doubt as to the notability of the subject. There is no indication that the person who tagged this as an nn-bio was notified of the AfD. I would have been inclined to relist this for broadeer consenssu, but there seems no point in doign that now -- anyone can choose to re-nominate if that seems warrented. Doing it rough

Looks to me like you're getting in there and having a good go, thumbs up to that. I've closed plenty of non-unanimous AfDs, although not as many as you perhaps. Even the tag-team where you close it as delete and farm it off to an admin is something that I've done before.

On the one that started this all off, you might have gone to far... or might not. Regardless, I think that it was handled poorly afterwards both by yourself and by Ambi. She should have made some comments about what was happening, and you could perhaps have done with a bit less indignation. But that's easy for me to say, isn't it?

So - Full marks for rolling up your sleeves and getting in there, lick your wounds, keep going.

Medal Infobox

Oh, I had already done that infobox the day before you made that! :o\ (See {{Olympic Record}}) Ahh well, I updated yours so that the olympic rings picture meshes better with the background color. I also added a {{MedalDisqualified}}, because I have seen this on rare occasions where a medal was taken away, and I believe this is significant. I wanted to add it to the talk pages, but first, I wanted to clear it through you...
As for my own {{Olympic Record}} template, should I just point it to these ones here? Or send them off to TfD? There are only several articles that use it so far, so it's not a big deal. Let me know. tiZom_{(the man)} 06:42, 3 February 2006 (UTC)

Oh, hey, sorry, didn't see that you'd made that one. My only thing is that Olympic record (btw, holy cripes does that need more info...) has a meaning similar to world record, and therefore having it as a header for the box might be confusing (perhaps just "Olympic medals" might work?). But the background color definitely looks better. And the Disqualified one is nice for these people (at least, the ones who won medals before being caught). I suggest redirects for the duplicate templates, as that's less work than TfDing them ;) but do whatever you feel should be done with them. -- Jonel | Speak 03:33, 4 February 2006 (UTC)

Yeah, I wasn't too vocal about making it... I was just sort of playing around with it...didn't know anyone else would be too interested! Anyway, I changed the template to "Olympic Medal Record." Hope that works :o) Also, I templated all the talk pages to the {{MedalTop talk}} page. That way, if we have updates, we can just change the MedalTop page, and it can be seen from anywhere. I also added the {{MedalDisqualified}} template into the general instructions. Do you have a plan on getting this implemented throughout all the individual olympian pages? Mesh Computers

Actually, the new evidence had nothing to do with my undeletion. The deletion was out of process, since it had been relisted and should have had five days discussion from relisting. It didn't need to be listed at deletion review, it was a no-brain undelete; the new evidence merely kept it from being relisted. I closed the review early because it was unnecessary, as an admin I can undelete such obvious out of process deletions. I spoke to John and through a series of misunderstandings, which seem to have characterised the whole affair, and seem to still, :) we came to the same conclusions. 1906 Olympics

I see you did some work on the 1906 Olympics page.

Is there any type of main image you can get for this to make this look similar to the other pages of the Olympic Games?

A program cover, official logo, etc.?

I read something strange the other day... the fact that judo was not in the 1968 Summer games in Mexico. It got me to thinking. I was wondering not just if judo was merely an international sport, but whether the weight classes fluxuated through time. That's kinda hard to check if there's no judo in the most recent summer games.

No slick button combinations (edit my talk page, select text, ctrl-c, etc.). Not everyone copies comments, but I find it easier to keep track of what is being discussed that way. As for judo, Judo at the Summer Olympics provides a good summary (surprisingly enough, France has won more gold medals than Korea. The links at the bottom go to descriptions of the competitions at each Games (starting in 1964). The weight classes have indeed fluctuated. Apparently, there was even an open weight class for a while.

I am speechless. I didn't even think to look for Judo at the Summer Olympics. That's really nice. And just as a side-note (something you probably already knew): I think that most judo tournaments have an open weight class. It never occured to me that any tournament would not. Table Formatting

Hey, I was wondering if you could help me with something: I'm trying to make some results pages for some Torino events, but I'm having a little trouble with tables. I saw your little tournament template that you've got (User:Jonel/Bracket-test), and that's really advanced, so I figured you'd know this :o) If you would, take a look at this. Australia at the 1900 Summer Olympics

Hi there jonel. I've made changes to this article, to which you were the only editor. I think that Freddy Lane is an uncontentious issue, but there may be some ambiguity w.r.t. Donald Mackintosh. The book that I'm using by Australia's Olympics historian admits that they only figured this out themselves in the late 1980s. It also discusses confusion between archery and shooting. I also notice that "live game shooting" isn't listed on the Shooting at the 1900 Summer Olympics, but it is noted in Australian publications. 1900 Summer Olympics medal count

Hi Jonel. First, I want to say that I appreciate a lot of the work you have done for the Olympic pages. I have been making lots of recent contributions, including finishing a complete set of "Canada at the xxxx Olympics" pages and also filling in some gaps for various sports pages. Anyway, I see that you reverted my edit to the 1900 page, with respect to the Luxembourgish athlete. I guess the issue is this: what should we take as the official source for medals? The IOC web site shows Michel Théato winning the medal for France, but as you have pointed out, it was discovered later that he was from Luxembourg. I presume the IOC doesn't recognize that yet. I'm a bit concerned that we're trying to override an official source, but if you feel strongly about it, we should at least add a footnote to the 1900 page since the Wikipedia table differs from the IOC table referenced from that page! Template:BiathlonAt2006WinterOlympics and the various Biathlon pages

Hello. I don't think Template:BiathlonAt2006WinterOlympics belongs on the main page for biathlon at the 2006 Games, Biathlon at the 2006 Winter Olympics, that normally resides in the Category:2006 Winter Olympics events, but instead I think it belongs on the specific biathlon competition pages to allow for navigation among them: Biathlon at the 2006 Winter Olympics - Men's Individual, Biathlon at the 2006 Winter Olympics - Men's Sprint, Biathlon at the 2006 Winter Olympics - Women's Individual and the pages for the other 7, assuming they will be created one day, that populate Category:Biathlon at the 2006 Winter Olympics. I removed it but you restored it.

This is analogous to the situation already existing for Template:AlpineSkiingAt2006WinterOlympics -- the template is not featured on Alpine skiing at the 2006 Winter Olympics which is a member of Category:2006 Winter Olympics events but it is featured at each the 10 individual pages for the specific competitions that populate Category:Alpine skiing at the 2006 Winter Olympics.

Instead of using this navigation template to get to the individual competition pages from the sport's main page for biathlon or alpine skiing at the 2006 Games one uses the links in italics under the individual competition headings on the sport's main page; for example: Main article: Biathlon at the 2006 Winter Olympics - Men's Individual.

One problem with Template:AlpineSkiingAt2006WinterOlympics is that it was apparently designed for the sport's specific competition pages at the 2006 Games and automatically includes the page it is placed on within the sport's 2006 Games subcategory. But the main sport pages don't live within their individual event page subcategories but rather in Category:2006 Winter Olympics events one level up, except when templated like so and thus miscategorized. This is the case for all the main event pages for the 2006 Games.

Please let me know if you agree with the above -- I don't want to accidentally get into a revert war over this. The speed skating pages are another case of the same (the corresponding template needs to be removed from the main speed skating page for the same reasons). -- Mareklug ^talk 10:21, 15 March 2006 (UTC)

What in the world were you thinking of in creating this family of templates? Have you ever even looked at the resulting (recently renamed) categories?

There must be some way to include—and use—another parameter, rather than just taking the article name and using that for sorting purposes.

olympic boycott

Hi, you reverted my addition of the map to the 1980 olympics page saying that it wasnt complete. Do you know the other countries which boycotted the 80 games?, I will add them if you do. I spent alot of time going through old Time magazine archives and websites and couldnt find a complete list anywhere - every site said "65/66 countries" but only listed the main ones. I think the only way its going to be completed is if someone sees it and makes a note about it on the talk page - wikipedia is all about things being in development after all . X at the Summer Olympics

I was just wondering why the "X at the Summer Olympics" pages contains lists of medals won at the 1900 and 1896 olympics? Shouldn't these pages rather contain lists of total number of medals won in all summer olympic competitions' while the 1896 and 1900 articles should list the medals won in these years specifically? Hi Celcius! My goal is that eventually those tables will all have every year, along with a total line at the bottom. Gives a quick idea of how well the nation has done over time. However, I am going through year-by-year with fairly massive improvements of each edition, so it will take a while to accomplish that by myself.
