The 1902 Australians[edit]

Thanks. :) That's much appreciated. I should in fairness point out that Sam Vimes did the first 70% or so, but when it seemed that he was unlikely to return to the article in the forseeable future I decided that it merited being completed, hopefully to the same high standard that he had established. Colin McCool[edit]

Thanks for the additions. I don't think the reviewer is in any hurry to finish this, as long as we continue to actively edit the article. I have very little on style, even less on personalty and nothing on his parents, wife etc. I have been told he was a bit of a "recluse" in his later years but I don't have a source for that. Cheers, Mattinbgn\talk 22:55, 16 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

As an Australian would say, "No worries"! Fresh eyes on a problem never hurt. The content on personality you added is fantastic and has a real ring of authenticity about it; complaints about the weather and the beer and misunderstanding of English social conventions are a commonplace of the Australian experience in the UK, although perhaps not so much as in the past.
Regarding the remaining outstanding items on the review; I have had no luck tracking down details of his family life or stories about his military service. No doubt they would be included in an obituary somewhere but I am three hours by car from the nearest (decent) library that would be likely to have the Sydney Morning Herald on microfiche. I certainly can't find an online obit. I propose to contact the reviewer and let him know that this is it for the article, at least for now. I will drive three hours for FA status but not for GA! Cheers and thanks again, Mattinbgn\talk 11:03, 20 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Great find, but you are showing your age a little though! The Testimonial is possibly better placed in the English cricket section but it reads well where it is as well. I am heading down to Melbourne this ANZAC Day weekend and if I get a chance I will go to the State Library of Victoria and see if I can find an obituary somewhere. Cheers, Mattinbgn\talk 21:08, 22 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi - could you look at this article and review the Cricket section. As with my other attempts at writing about cricketers, its based on the Wisden obituary, so may need tweaking a bit. Cheers. --Daemonic Kangaroo (talk) 06:45, 7 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Fred Holland[edit]

Thank you. I was worried that I might have overdone the statistics. It's occurred to me that a player's season by season figures would be better in the form of a table. If I was capable of creating templates, I'd be tempted to make one for that. JH (talk page) 08:44, 10 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've always been something of a "stat rat", which may have coloured my attitude. Thee's nothing that I like better than a nice table of data. :) Incidentally, I suspect that it may have been the decline of Abel that led to Holland getting more opportunities, even though he wasn't that successful, but to confirm that would have needed work verging on OR. Granny Alston[edit]

I am afraid that I do not. It's strange going back, it seems quite a few cricketers had strange nicknames or names. Maybe he was literally named after his grandmother! It's a thought. Bobo. 20:39, 15 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Basic cricket biographies...[edit]

Hi,

I agree with your comments about Jim Andrew for example. They are hastily written articles for the purposes of them being there, rather than being useful articles. I have decided to give our O2 friend some help, and ended up writing quite a long piece of guidance on his talk page. I hope he will take it in the right spirit and will take it on board. I ended up rewriting Jim Andrew on his talk page as an example, and will watch the article to see if he improves it at all. If you've got other tips to mention, feel free to add to what I have written - it is probably more use to him there than deep inside WT:CRIC. I'll try and keep an eye out for hopefully improving articles - maybe you will check some too as underneath it all, he is doing good work.

Also see his reply on my talk page. I'm not sure I agree with his 'template' for all cricketers as it seems he is trying to churn out articles that need a lot of tidying in too fast a time.

Best wishes, –MDCollins (talk) 23:49, 17 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

English cricket clubs[edit]

I've simply sectioned the article up, ultimately, the plan being to delete the Other Leagues and Other Clubs sections and just having three sections:

  • ECB Premier Leagues
  • Prominent leagues
  • Other prominent clubs

when finished. Rather than removing the redlinks, how about just deleting all the non-notable stuff? -- bigissue (talk) 11:29, 4 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Derek Pearson/Colin Stansfield Smith[edit]

Thank you! One of my worries whenever I refer to a lesser-known cricketer, especially one not from Worcestershire, is that they will turn out to have been much better known for something else. I do try to check, but must have neglected to do so this time. I'm grateful to you for fixing the link. (And for the throwing stuff, of course.) Greville & Lowther[edit]

Hello John. Not again. This has happened about seven or eight times now: Maitland and Lushington certainly; and I think there have been at least another two or three. As you say, the aristocrats are everywhere! I'll merge the cricket details into the existing articles and redirect. Thanks for letting me know. All the best. ---BlackJack | talk page 13:56, 19 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Dearie me, that Greville article is awful. Someone has copied a chunk of text verbatim from the 1911 Britannica! I've just inserted the cricket bit and tagged the rest for rewrite. Now I think about it, I've heard of Lowther, but never associated him with cricket. ---BlackJack | talk page 14:37, 19 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I see what you mean! For now I've just rewritten the lead paragraph to make it clear that he was primarily a bowler and that his batting came a (very!) poor second. I do want to get rid of all the redlinks first, but once that's done there are a lot of articles (some written by me) that need a great deal of improvement, and Aldridge's is certainly one. It's so oddly slanted that I suspect that large parts of it may have to be rewritten rather than just edited. Loganberry (Talk) 00:50, 20 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think it's any secret that I'm not writing these things with fine prose style at the forefront of my mind, but I try to avoid irritating usage. Looking at your edit, I'm irritated with myself for not spotting the redundancy in "never again surpassed", and I absolutely agree that "by a quirk of fate" is pointless unless you're a journalist needing to fill space! Personally I don't see that "when" is either better or worse than "in which", but I certainly have no objection to your version. Actually, I am rather hoping that once these bios exist, better stylists than me will feel like making them look more attractive than my workmanlike originals. :) Loganberry (Talk) 15:58, 22 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Lovely; thank you. I've been trying not to think about how many of those 500+ players don't have any sort of infobox, let alone the up-to-date type! Loganberry (Talk) 00:22, 23 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Dick Pollard[edit]

I've read over the article and made a few cosmetic changes, and I'm impressed, it's a good article. I've found that it's very difficult to write about a cricketer's personal life (eg: where they grew up and what they did between their retirement and death, giving the impression that they're machines rather than men) which is probably the only thing standing in the way of making this article a Good Article. Unfortunately I don't have any cricket histories, Lancashire or otherwise, and rely entirely on online sources for cricket articles. I'm glad you were able to improve it, I think it does justice to one of Lancashire's best bowlers. Cheers, Nev1 (talk) 01:00, 22 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I think you should go for it anyway. WP:GA? seems to imply that if a non-core piece of information is not included then it is OK, YellowMonkey (bananabucket) 02:09, 24 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
This historic cricket bat is awarded to JohnIp for his marvellous work on the older periods of cricket, in particular Doug Ring and Sam Loxton. YellowMonkey (bananabucket) 02:09, 24 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Point taken, it probably would be worth going for it. Playing cricket was clearly the most significant thing Pollard did, but at the same time missing out 56 years of someone's life seems like a big gap. Then again I think realistically only a couple of sentences could be written about his life outside cricket even with sources. If it was explained to a GA reviewer that the available sources don't go into detail about Pollard's life beyond cricket that may be enough. Nev1 (talk) 15:12, 24 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Mmmm. Not really into the GA/FA thing. Happy to support re refs etc if someone else wants to take it on, but I like writing stuff, not bothered about having it marked! It's on my watchlist, so I'll follow whatever anyone else wants to do with it, and chip in where I think I can be helpful. Johnlp (talk) 16:43, 24 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
My experience of the GA/FA process is that it generally improves the article, a fresh pair of eyes may spot things that others haven't picked up on. For example, Mattinbgn pointed out in his recent review of Mashrafe Mortaza that I use jargon too much. I'm a bit busy with two GAs under review at the moment, and preparing an article for FAC (and I've got an eye on getting James Anderson to GA standard), but if no one's picked up the Dick Pollard article in the new year, so I'm not juggling to many balls, I'll probably take it to GAN. Nev1 (talk) 16:56, 24 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thought you'd like to know that Dick Pollard is now a Good Article nominee. It will probably be a while before it's reviewed as it's back of the queue; YellowMonkey seems to be single-handedly trying to make every Australia-related cricket article on the encyclopedia GA standard ;-) Very impressive. Nev1 (talk) 21:46, 4 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Randall Johnson[edit]

I was rather surprised to see that Randall Johnson does not yet have an article. I'd guess that he might be the most significant Somerset player not to have one, having made over 10,000 f-c runs. RE; Johnson[edit]

The first one sounds like a slip up on my part, however regarding the second my own interpretation of the source was that Hassett requested Johnson following the formers appointment, but I likely read it wrong. Good luck with the article :) SGGH ping! 21:01, 15 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I've addressed most of the copy editing issues raised during the review, and most of what's left is the reviewer asking for more sources. I'm pretty sure that it's just a case of copying the existing sources and duplicating them where relevant, but as I have literally none of them, I've taken the article pretty much as far as I can. The problem is that all the referencing could be addressed and the article might still be failed due to the reviewer's comment about comprehensiveness. What I'd recommend doing is giving them a prod so they can make the decision on whether to fail it now. I'd be happy to ask him myself if you think this is the right course of action. I'm torn on the issue myself; sources very rarely comment on a player's life before and after cricket (even Pollard's war service is glossed over) so what more can be done? But while we're constrained by the sources, it feels like the article doesn't meet criterion 3a: "it addresses the main aspects of the topic". However, this "allows short articles, articles that do not cover every major fact or detail". Nev1 (talk) 18:32, 16 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Cricketers who died in railway accidents[edit]

I happened to be looking at your sandbox, and spotted your list. I'm aware of a second cricketer who died in such a way: Fred Stedman. JH (talk page) 19:13, 18 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Lemmon remarks on the appositeness of his railway timetable protection in view of his death. According to his Wisden obituary, the accident occurred at Bray, County Wicklow. Lemmon locates it at "Wicklow". If you can lay your hands on a 1918 Irish railways route map or timetable, I imagine that you could work out the company. JH (talk page) 20:32, 18 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
A bit of research on Wikipedia suggests that the railway was the Dublin and South Eastern Railway, assuming that it hadn't changed hands by 1918. JH (talk page) 20:39, 18 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
A Google search took me to a site with an archive of railway accidents, but none of the ten accidents listed there for 1918 occurred in Ireland. Nor could I find any reference to the accident anywhere else (except on sites that had copied the Wiki Fred Stedman article). JH (talk page) 21:09, 18 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
"I suppose a railway accident could be as minor as someone falling off a platform, rather than a full-blown collision or derailment." Yes, I was speculating on the same lines. I was also wondering whether Stedman might have been a railway employee rather than a passenger, since the accident occurred not only during the Great War but also outside the cricket season and he would presumably have needed some employment other than cricket. JH (talk page) 10:18, 19 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi John. I requested a review at MILHIST under the reasoning of KJ being a RAAF officer and the Services being an official unit. Actually, I think Hassett is the one that needs to most work, in terms of missing content. For the 1948 thing, I can just copy in the leads from each of the individual Test articles and plunder bits from the other "Bradman in 48" type articles, with respect to the public reception, social significance etc, and the team strategy with the new ball and all that. Inter-twining[edit]

Thanks for letting me know. I should have checked, but (for once!) CricketArchive and Cricinfo agree on Richard, and his Wisden obit doesn't mention his being called Dick either. Given that, and no sources for "Dick" on the Dick Twining page, I'll merge them into the Richard Twining article. Loganberry (Talk) 00:14, 26 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Gibson and Cunis[edit]

Sadly, I think we may have to remove the remark about Bob Cunis from Alan Gibson's article as being an example of his "spontaneous wit". According to Cunis's obituary in the new Wisden, the remark was probably first used by Alan Ross in a match report in The Observer of a match at Hove in 1969. Looking at the New Zealanders' itinerary at CricketArchive, their match against Sussex immediately preceded The Oval Test, which is where Gibson supposedly made his remark. So Ross's witticism would still have been fresh in his mind. JH (talk page) 17:28, 9 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I've already edited Cunis's own article, and I'll do the same for Gibson's. The TMS article may also need changing. JH (talk page) 20:35, 9 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

do you have the 1949 edition? The online archive only seems to have snippets. Do you have the tour match reports and the parts about Saggers and Tallon? Leveson Gower[edit]

I thought that I would check how CricketArchive named him. It turns out that they are in a state of high confusion. His article is titled "Shrimp Leveson Gower". Then they say "Full name: Henry Dudley Gresham Leveson-Gower" amd "Relations: Brother: FAG Leveson-Gower"! It's not like them to be so lax. (Wisden 2005 - the only one I checked, has "Levseon Gower".) JH (talk page) 17:53, 30 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for Derrick Bailey[edit]

Updated DYK query On July 3, 2009, Did you know? was updated with a fact from the article Derrick Bailey, which you created or substantially expanded. You are welcome to check how many hits your article got while on the front page (here's how) and add it to DYKSTATS if it got over 5,000. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the Did you know? talk page.

i'm currently working on the page of Albert Lightfoot, seeing as he is one of the players in the Northamptonshire records who doesnt have a page. I'm still low on facts but i'm getting there. To the point though; i was wondering whether you thought he should be listed in his infobox as an All-rounder or not? he seems to me to be predominantly a batsman, but has some pretty decent bowling figures too. what do you think? Steelback (talk) 23:55, 27 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • – The page is now complete, in terms of ceating the page. I have even added a bit of your opinion on him, although it makes sense that it is not only your opinion about his batting average drooping at times. Have fun browsing it! Steelback (talk) 21:50, 28 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Brian Crump copyright issues.[edit]

could you please look into this issue that has been brought against me. im not sure where i stand in the matter, as i am unaware of how the rules affect this particular case. it is regards to the Brian Crump page that icreated using an extract from a book which i re-worded, thinking that this would count as it being original, seeing as the information is after all either factual or anecdotal and therefore could have been put forward onto wikipedia just as easily by someone who actually remembered the events rather than myself who has looked it up in a book. thanks, Steelback (talk) 23:00, 29 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Have a good break! the issue has been resolved. Steelback (talk) 13:04, 30 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Somerset players[edit]

Hi John. I sympathise with your point of view but the fact is that the section had been tagged because of WP:NPOV and this has happened in a few other similar cases also. I'm happy to have all the players included personally, but we must do what we can to keep the wider community happy. We certainly can't have phrases like "stuff of legends". I think part of the problem is the title of the section: a word like "famous" immediately conjures up POV. I know a few of these county club articles use "notable players" as the title and since all first-class players are notable, no one could argue with that. I'll go back to it and have another go. Best wishes. --Jack | talk page 09:04, 8 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Reader-Blackton[edit]

Thanks for the query. I noted the comment in Cricketarchive and Info which didn't quite ring true so I checked the BMD database. There is no Walter Reader born at that time but there is a Walter Blackton. That is why I put a ref for OPC in the article which I would't normally bother with. Perhaps it needs a note. I have already been instrumental in getting one change to CA which was the mix-up over the George Yates. I couldn't find the Wisden obit, but I cant help feeling there is more than meets the eye about this guy. Regards Motmit (talk) 19:07, 19 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Somerset Cricketers[edit]

Hi, I saw from WP:CRIC that you are a Somerset supporter. You may have noticed that I have been doing some work on expanding the articles for their players recently, notably Craig Kieswetter, Omari Banks and Zander de Bruyn. I am also paying particular attention to Andrew Caddick due to his upcoming retirement, and the fact he was a leading England player for a number of years. I would appreciate any input or contributions you might have on these or other Somerset CCC related articles, and particularly would appreciate comments on the how the Andrew Caddick article is shaping up. Keith Johnson[edit]

Congrats on getting this through to FA. I thought this would be the most difficult one of all of them, but you've done brilliantly. Johnlp (talk) 08:44, 19 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, I think articles on obscure things are a lot easier because while there is a lack of information, balance and comprehensive isn't an issue due to not having to consider everything that happened. Most of the articles on the greats after reading a bit, one discovers that there is a heap of stuff that is missing, like on the Tiger article. So while an obscure thing might raise more eyebrows with outsiders I think an article on a well studied topic can be harder to do properly, especially things like Bradman's disputes as there are hundreds of different views and analyses on his behaviour. YellowMonkey (bananabucket) 03:13, 21 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I reckon we could write 150kb+ of prose on the sledging between Bradman, Fingleton and O'Reilly. Especially now that they're all dead and more of the old letters and secret tape recordings have been made public. A few board members from Bradman's era started talking out as well, those that have survived until now YellowMonkey (bananabucket) 03:27, 21 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

References for Somerset County Cricket Club[edit]

Thanks for your message re the refs I added to Somerset County Cricket Club. RE: Birthplaces[edit]

My understanding of WPMOS is that its preferable not to have places of birth in the opening sentence, particularly if there is an infobox which states the information - hence my edits. SGGH ping! 13:54, 13 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings![edit]

Greetings Johnlp. Have you considered applying for autoreviewer "status"? Basically what it means is that your newly created pages get automatically marked as good and don't show up as needing human examination on Special:Newpages. You can actually apply for it yourself, but I reckon it's probably easier - probably loads of Wikipedia bureacracy involved - if I get the editor who granted me the rights to do so for you, too. I thought I'd ask you first if you were interested. Let me know if you have any questions... and keep up the good work! Cheers! --Technopat (talk) 18:00, 11 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

DYK hook[edit]

Rippons[edit]

Always easy to get blinkered, but the completely unexplained gap in Sydney's career did seem particualrly egregious - especially when I noticed the start date of his final match in 1914.. Funy thing was, yours wasn't the only cricketer article I came at from DYK today which had the same "fault", Dar Lyon was similar. Perhaps it's something that needs to taken up at project level, WP:MILHIST is pretty good at doing the converse, ensuring people write about the non-military aspects of people's careers, particularly when it wasn't their main career. It seems like a very good idea for amateur first-class players to try and establish something about their "day-job" as possible. This has reminded me that I really ought to get back to James Cassels (British Army officer), which despite the fact he was a field marshal and Chief of the General Staff, still devotes (slightly) more space to his cricket than his army career... David Underdown (talk) 16:32, 14 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Given that Jack Lee (cricketer) currently redirects to Jack Lee (footballer), and only made 1 first-class appearance, wouldn't it be better to put the Jack Lee who played for Somerset and Middlesex in the Jack Lee (cricketer) page, and provide a link from that for disambiguation? The Somerset and Middlesex Jack Lee is certainly the more noted for his cricket after all. Harrias (talk) 10:08, 15 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'm going to go ahead and make an article for him; for the moment I expect it'll just be a stub with an infobox, but at least that gives us something to work from. Harrias (talk) 10:34, 15 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Now in place. Very short stub at the moment, just on my lunch-break at work! Harrias (talk) 12:11, 15 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

For your work on Somerset cricketers in general, but Harold Gimblett and Jack Lee especially. To use your own words, you are creating content rather than whittling away at the content already there. Harrias (talk) 23:58, 26 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I was wondering if you remembered this player as i am once again not sure whether or not to classify this player as an all-rounder. neither his batting or bowling averages are great but his F-C HS is 190, while his BB is 9-35. due to this i will for now call him an all-rounder, if you disagree i will change it though. Thanks. Steelback (talk) 23:42, 27 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • He certainly had different phases in his career but i have now seen other texts that refer to him as an all-rounder. You definately have a point about the disambiguation. The thing is, is that the American judge is known as Vincent Lyons Broderick, while Vincent Broderick redirects to him. The solution may be to get rid of the redirection and move Vincent Broderick (cricketer) to Vincent Broderick, while leaving a section at the top of the page such as;
For the Federal Judge, see Vincent Lyons Broderick.

Would this cause any problems? Steelback (talk) 12:28, 28 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
