Category of Control systems theorists

Hi, thanks for your work on the list of People in systems and control. I noticed you tagged quite a lot of those persons with the WikiProject Systems - tag. That's a very good idea - I was looking at Category:Artificial intelligence researchers and Category:Roboticists and thought of the same thing.

Image:Yu-Chi Ho.jpg

Hi. I have taken a second look at the information you at the image you uploaded. I have to tell you that these things are complicated, and the guys checking these images don't also always know what the exact rules are. they always seems to come up with something new.

As far as I know in this particulair case on Wikipedia it seems ok. But if somebody tags it again, for what reason, you have to contact that person and ask what kind of information he further needs.

I also heard that on Wikicommons in this particulair case, you need a written email from Yu-Chi Ho that he "releases this picture into the public domain". Or he gives you permission to releases this picture into the public domain. A copy of this email should be send to an administrator, who will keep these emails in a closed archive. I don't know the exact details because I haven't done it myselve yet. I you find out, let me know.

It is much easier if you yourselve take a nice new picture of him on a sunny day, and upload and release the image yourselve. -- Mdd (talk) 20:30, 23 April 2008 (UTC)

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind. I'm leaning towards Rudolf E. Kalman and Richard E. Bellman, but those articles should really be expanded to the quality of the existing systems scientist pages.I've emailed the National Academy of Engineering for the photograph of Kalman, but so far have not received a reply. I took a look at both article and did some wikification, and expanded the Richard E. Bellman the easy way. I also uploaded a "fair use image" to the Richard E. Bellman article (This is only acceptated in Wikipedia when the person is dead, which cannot be used in an other place). This will give you a clear start. If you need a picture of Rudolf E. re: List of IEEE Medal of Honor recipients

I agree with merging them. It used to all part of IEEE Medal of Honor and then someone split the list out. I never understood the point of splitting it in the first place as the main article is pretty small and the list doesn't make it overly long. -- JLaTondre (talk) 00:01, 24 April 2008 (UTC)

Infobox

What do you think of using the "Infobox Person" {{Infobox Person | name = | image = | image_size = | caption = | birth_name = | birth_date = {{Birth date|1911|10|20}} | birth_place = | death_date = {{Death date and age|1940|12|23|1911|10|20}} | death_place = | death_cause = | resting_place = | resting_place_coordinates = | residence = | nationality = | other_names = | known_for = | education = | employer = | occupation = | title = | salary = | networth = | height = | weight = | term = | predecessor = | successor = | party = | boards = | religion = | spouse = | partner = | children = | parents = | relatives = | signature = | website = | footnotes = }} instead of Infobox Scientist for the articles? Person was designed with fields to cover all fields of biography, and the scientist one hasn't been updated in a while, you still can't scale photos in it, so if they are low res, you get aliasing effects and pixilation. --Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ) (talk) 19:52, 24 April 2008 (UTC)

I think Template:Infobox Person is a bit too general for my use - I tend to focus on articles for scientists and engineers, and half of the parameters for Template:Infobox Person do not really apply. OK - now I'm slightly confused - I edited Template:Infobox scientist to have identical image fields as Template:Infobox Person, and I don't see any difference - I think the current setup scales images with respect to the size of the infobox, although occasionally, this is larger than the original. Calculus of screws

As an expert in robotics I believe you could help verify or correct an issue connected to applications of linear algebra. Recently I contributed to Screw theory#Calculus of screws a digest of what I understood from the literature by A.T. Yang and others. I have not been able to verify that a screw motion can be accomplished in the way described by Yang. The ASME has stood behind this notion over the decades, yet it has not been picked up in abstract "mathematical publications". I would appreciate any light you can shed on this gap between engineering and mathematical literature.Rgdboer (talk) 18:07, 5 May 2008 (UTC)

Hi Rgdboer - my expertise in robotics is mainly centered around perception, autonomy, and control. The materials in screw theory focus more on mechanics and hence outside of my research area. This AfD

May seem strange to you that this article, of the bunch you created, should be the one nominated for deletion. I changed your article to a redirect to Dov Frohman. You might search on a few variations of names for these engineers before you start new articles, try family names alone, although Wikipedia can be poorly organized in this way. I have no idea how User:Chzz came to the conclusion that Dov Frohman did not "satisfy Wikipedia's creteria for inclusion," because Chzz doesn't say anything on the AfD about this, and here, he/she only discusses his/her feelings about the issue. I don't see any reason Frohman wouldn't be in an encyclopedia, so I can't help you in getting past that stumbling block of dealing with people's "feelings" about certain articles.

Still, good job adding stubs about substantive people, rather than minor television show characters to an encyclopedia. Do expect to have all sorts of them nominated for deletion simply because they're not cartoon characters. Try tagging the talk pages with WikiProject Engineering or something to get other in-the-know editors to help you with writing, referencing, and researching the articles. Name changes

Why are you changing the names of multiple bios to remove the middle name? This is madness, needlessly creating redirects all over the place. It does not even conform with guidelines, which prefer middle names in full unless the subject is better known otherwise.

Hi - if I interpreted the guideline clearly, the most common name is preferred over other versions. For an scientist/engineer, publications usually follow the format of "First, Middle Initial, Last", and it is the most common format for scientist/engineers. All the page moves I made was in response to an expansion for the IEEE Edison Medal, for which all (that I checked) use the format stated above. I believe this is consistent with the guidelines. --Jiuguang Wang (talk) 20:09, 24 May 2008 (UTC)
I think that by far and away the most sensible thing to do would be for you to create redirects with your preferred name format. Besides anything else, you are creating double redirects everywhere. Michael I. Pupin, which, I notice is the name you originally had in the IEEE article, redirects to Mihajlo Idvorski Pupin. By redirecting Mihajlo Idvorski Pupin to Mihajlo I. Pupin, you have broken all these links (and there are a lot of them) and I saw no attempt by you to fix them before I reverted. All those other changes you made to the IEEE engineers have probably also broken links but I don't have the time to look at them all - YOU need to clean them up or revert your moves.
Yes, the guidelines say use the most common name, but there is also a strong preference for not using initials, or punctuation in general, in article titles. This should only be done where the initial is actually part of the well known name (we are talking politicians, musicians and actors here). Most people are going to search on surname or first name/lastname, not initials. The guidelines say there are exceptions, but this is for cases like George W. Bush, where the initial is part of the well known form. All the other forms should be redirects to the main article.

Double redirects are fixed by a number of bots, and I didn't see a reason to do it myself (in any case, cyclic graphs is not a wiki phenomenon). As for the middle name, see here, here, and here, all from IEEE with an middle initial. I maintain my position on the middle name as a common way to refer to Pupin (I guess we can agree to disagree).

You have not followed the guidelines correctly. The use of a "fullstop" is derorgated in favour of a period. Hence your renaming of Frank Julian Sprague is not in accordance with the guidelines. I also note that you failed to indicate you intention to rename this article on the talkj page in advance, which is a failue to obtain WP:CONSENSUS as to the renaming on this page. I therefore urge you to use a little more restriant when renaming pages, and to ensure that you fully understand the guidelines. Olana North (talk) 13:04, 25 May 2008 (UTC)

Regarding the fix you made to the (proto) article in my userspace. First of all, you should be aware that it is against etiquette to mess with pages in userspace without the users permission. However, I am not complaining in this case since I could be construed to have encouraged you to do this.
More to the point, it would have been rather less intrusive if you had repointed the link with a pipe. That way the original text of the article stays the same and you do not have to worry about the context. If you have been doing that on all the articles which link to Pupin you have dramatically increased the number of editors who could potentially get upset with you since Pupin links to many dozens of places. If it is all the IEEE engineer articles . . . make some room on your talk page now.
I agree with ON, article name changes should be discussed beforehand on the article talk pages, or, if you can find a suitable one, a project talk page which covers all the IEEE engineers. Global changes of the sort you are trying to carry out are especially likely to attract controversy and all the more reason for discussing first.

Proposed deletion

Hello. Regarding your comments at Talk:TR100.

TR100 is being proposed for deletion according to WP:PROD. As such it will be deleted unless an editor objects to the deletion. Any editor can object, and should do so by removing the {{dated prod}} template. As per text of template. As long as the template is on the page the deletion might not be considered contested.

Please note that even if you do remove the prod template the article might still be deleted according to WP:AFD, but this will follow a discussion~in order to ascertain consensus. Taemyr (talk) 23:55, 11 June 2008 (UTC)

Re:Infobox scientist

I see what you're saying. While there was no consensus on the images as a whole, I do remember a conversation on the centralized discussion regarding non-blps. In that one, there was a decent consensus to remove the images from those. That's what I was going by, I had no intention of removing all of the placeholders, just those non-blps. Infobox

If the Scientist infobox talk page becomes cluttered with WP banners, then we could always use {{WikiProjectBanners}} and nest each Wikiproject banner, as in Isaac Newton Headbomb {ταλκWP Physics: PotW} 23:59, 29 June 2008 (UTC)

My point was that the infobox is not directly related to any WikiProject, but merely used by all (WikiProject Physics, for example). If all WikiProjects that use the infobox starts adding their tag to the talk page, then it'll be a mess, regardless of the banner shell use. Take a look at Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Directory/Science. By your logic, most of the projects listed there have a claim on the infobox. Computer vision vs. robotics

I have some concerns about the recent inclusions of computer vision pages into the robotics project:

It is true that a large part of the work in computer vision may be relevant to robotics. It is however also the case that you can work in computer vision without ANY association to robotics. Hence, computer vision is an independent subfield of computer science on a similar independent footing as other areas of computer science, such as machine learning or robotics, however, with mutual relationsships. I would say that I as well as many other users/authors/researchers with a background in computer vision are not comfortable with this implicit decision of classifying computer vision articles as part of a robotics project. Request email of deleted stub Davide Marocco

Hey, you left a minder on my talk page that stub Davide Marocco was speedy deleted under section A7 criteria for speedy deletion. Apparently there's some question of his notability. Davide Marocco and another researcher Stefano Nolfi are currently doing research in AI, from a unique angle dealing with language development. I had added some material to the main AI article in which I referenced work done by Marocco... which you can find here [1].

The material was later deleted from the main AI article because of it's specific nature and the fact that the AI article is already very long and needs to be cut back. The research is important and if I find a good place for it, I will reintroduce the research.. in which case I will want the Davide Marocco stub again.... So right now the stub is not really important but I would like a copy of it, if in case, I find a good place to add how language evolution is currently being tested in AI cognisance.--Sparkygravity (talk) 03:41, 11 July 2008 (UTC)

Well, I've completely rewrote Template:WikiProject Robotics with WPBannerMeta and created the standard quality/importance category names. I'm still waiting for all the pages to update to see if I messed something up. (I think about 75% of the pages still have not been updated). In the mean time, I started the assessment, and still have about 500 pages left (down from 750).
What will come next is that I will add the TF1, etc...parameters in the WPBannerMeta to our template, creating the taskforce/categories. Then, we start start going through categories like Category:Robots to classify the articles. I'm hesitant to do that now since I still don't know if the WPBannerMeta modifications broke something.

When I was an undergraduate, one of my majors was electrical engineering, and as a result, I had several classes where Karnaugh map was used for digital circuit reduction. Overall, I really hated circuits and the only reason I was in EE was because of control theory and DSP. I suppose from a roboticist's point of view, logic equation reduction is somewhat important to knowledge-based system in artificial intelligence, but I'm guessing that's not what you had in mind.
Basically few people find a need for binary state reduction except logic circuit designers who can take advantage of special reduction capability only available to hardware. I was hoping at one time to use the software method to reduce computer programs to minimum form or as a method of data compression but since programs and data change frequently the method would most likely have to be implemented in hardware. -- adaptron (talk) 18:01, 20 July 2008 (UTC)

Currently my work involves developing applications for Optimal classification, multiple state logical equation reduction and neural networks. In general, both methods were placed on hold as computers became widespread due to the radical increase in speed over manual methods computers offered, which these methods were intended to address prior to the widespread use and development of computers. Many tasks, however, remain manual which robots might one day be trained to perform, but in ether case both methods are capable of increasing the speed of processes that are automated even still. The technique of Optimal classification is especially noteworthy for its ability to find the maximum number of hidden nodes required and to greatly improve the training speed of neural networks. However, since many Wikipedia articles are at a post-graduate level and since some articles have "owners" and other articles have "WP cops" in many cases I prefer to author or edit Wikibooks or Simple Wikipedia articles instead of articles here. -- adaptron (talk) 18:42, 20 July 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for the information - I read your article here, and to be honest, I don't see how the end result is different from the Quine–McCluskey algorithm. In additional, from a computational complexity point of view, this algorithms seems to be a lot less efficient than QM - I don't know visual basic, but I can see several occurrences of triple nested for loops.
The question of whether the end result is the same or not depends entirely upon whether the Quine–McCluskey algorithm can reduce multiple state equations. One of the great misapprehensions of the Twentieth Century is that the capability to resolve mathematical problems in other bases using binary logic means that human thought can be simulated using binary logic to reduce multiple state equations when multiple states are present. In other words that binary logic is sufficient to handle logical equations which in addition to the states of "yes" and "no" have the state of "maybe." I have not been able to convert a multiple state logical equation into a binary state logical equation, say perhaps by adding a new variable, reduce it to minimum form, and then convert the reduction back into a multiple state equation and I wasted a great deal of time thinking it was possible and could render identical results.
Algorithm efficiency can possibly be improved by a variety of means such as using threads or recursion where steps are repeated or redundant and parallel for each row and column, as well as the possibility of converting the Quine–McCluskey algorithm to handle multiple states, if it does not do so now. -- adaptron (talk) 00:25, 22 July 2008 (UTC)

In searching for the IEEE article I remember I came across this IEEE article which I have not read and would find very interesting since it appears to cover the topic of a universal logic machine capable of handling multi-valued logic which has already been developed.
Fuzzy logic in general considers multiple states to be more or less a statistical value between 0 and 1 and results in an approximation somewhat like neural networking is supposed to do versus providing an exact answer. -- adaptron (talk) 00:25, 22 July 2008 (UTC)

Again my goal was not necessarily to produce an efficient method for reducing multi-valued logical equations to minimum form but rather to simulate human thinking in terms of conclusion reaching more so than applying the step by step process. Certainly anyone would find the task of using the Harvard Chart Method inside their brain to reach a more logically accurate conclusion, instead of doing so intuitively, would probably suffer the undesirable result of a very swollen head. Any method used need only diagram a multi-valued logical statement and then assign the meaning of the multi-valued variables to multi-valued symbolic variables, form a logical equation and reduce it to minimum form. I have been told on numerous occasions that no human thinks like this but again if you get near some of the left over personnel from some of the projects started by the former Soviet Union such as their space program then you might see this as a definite improvement over their commitment to using binary logic instead.

I am not suggesting that direct application of the Turing test itself here is a true test of any of these method since the methods themselves are quite limited to reducing multi-valued logic equations to minimum form, which is but a minor aspect of human interaction at the level of the Turing test. However, I hold the ability of using any method which is truly capable of reducing logical arguments to minimum form as valid simulation of valid and accurate logical human thought - a function which people, especially judges, are accustomed to doing everyday. It is not a matter of improvement except in terms of thinking logically at the level of a human being. No, that is the problem I mentioned above. You can not convert multiple state logic to binary state logic, reduce it and then convert it back to multiple state like you can do with math. That is what few people ever come to understand after there first number systems course. From what I read, the "maybe" state you are referring to isn't in the formalism of multi-valued logic. In MVL, the states are not distinguished by "true" or "false" (or "maybe"), but rather that each value is simply another state. It's true - you cannot convert maybe, but you can convert multi-state to binary state. See the discussion at the end of ternary logic as well as here. --Jiuguang (talk) 03:23, 22 July 2008 (UTC)
Multi-valued logic need only include states which are mutually exclusive and unique within the variable. So as long as that criteria is met the assigned meaning otherwise does not matter. Do not confuse a lack of states sufficient to move from a higher base to a lower one with conversion from a higher base to a lower one as in number system conversion. While you may end up with only 2 states remaining after a higher base equation is reduced the fact that the 2 states are still part of a higher base system can not be ignored and the 2 remaining states thought of after the reduction as now belonging to a 2 valued logic. -- adaptron (talk) 04:55, 22 July 2008 (UTC)

Wang, I grew up in a town where there were many atheists. Many end up being killed in gang fights, or from overdose. Others have found religion. Some have chosen to worship the State as God. Most of them end up in prison because, after all, that is one of the only places where their God supports, loves and takes care of them. In your case I think you have found the Wikipedia and Georgia Tech. Both have become your God. I'm concerned about this because I know two women who were college students, one from Georgia, that were recently murdered. One had only visited Cuba as an exchange student and the other was from the Ukraine. Both, however were socialists and atheists as yourself and many belief that is the reason they were killed. I'm telling you this because, like them, you are making the mistake of attacking people for the reason that they believe in a traditional Heavenly God and because I am against killing of any kind. However, like yourself there are persons out there who are as devoted to their God as you are to yours and who will not hesitate to prove that their God is superior. I know that there is nothing I can do about this except to convince you in the face of your Communist upbringing that Jesus Christ is the way to go. I really do appreciate your comments, and I do appreciate what you are trying to accomplish. My hope is that this book will eventually expand, either through contributions from the current author or new authors. I've found that people are more likely to contribute to an existing book then to attempt to create a new one from scratch. Therefore, even if this book is lousy now, I have high hopes that it will improve, one way or another.

On Wikibooks we are patient. It's a requirement when you're working on projects as big as a book. However, we're not ignorant or soft either: If the book doesn't improve significantly given enough time, it will be deleted. I hope hope hope it becomes better. Okay -- the CFDs are all here. I've nominated Category:Ecological robots for deletion, and three other categories you created (plus an additional one created by another editor) for renaming. It's all explained at the CFD section.
You certainly put a lot of good work into setting up those sub-cats and bringing a degree of order to the "chaos" of Category:Robots. You might like to go through the sub-cats and have a look at the new parent cats I just added to a bunch of them, so that they will be linked to other categories besides Robots.

Thanks, Jameson. For me, Julie Dancer made the mistake of sending emails to Henrik I. Christensen and my advisor, Magnus B. Egerstedt, and I've already spoken to them about this situation. Since then, I know that my advisor received several more emails from her, pitching the "logic reduction to prove the existence of God" idea, but they made the trash can very quickly. If she did not send those emails, and sent it GT's security office instead, then I'd be more worried, but she did, and I now have two professors to back me up if necessary.

Cooperative optimization

Hi, does Cooperative optimization remind you of anyone? Seems familiar to me. Kevin (talk) 12:35, 22 August 2008 (UTC)

In optimization, there are algorithms which exhibits cooperative behaviors, such as particle swarm optimization, but I personally don't think the phrase "cooperative optimization" is widely used in the optimization community. I do think there is an obvious conflict of interest, since all the references were written by Xiaofei Huang, the author of the article, and I do think the notability tag is appropriate, since the topic doesn't seem to be widely cited. As for optimal classification, however, I don't think there is an obvious relationship. OC contained large amount of materials which are purely fabricated for whatever reasons, and the citations (mainly books) doesn't back up the materials in any way. The equations and texts in cooperative optimization, on the other hand, does seem to be verifiable, and the references are legitimate. Take a look at wikibooks:Optimal Classification. It did seem very familiar, but then I have little knowledge in the field. One thing I did notice is that the refs with ISBNs show different authors to that claimed in the reference. Something is odd about that. Cheers Kevin (talk) 13:09, 22 August 2008 (UTC)
It is because those are edited volumes, Huang only contributed to maybe a chapter or a section. The authors you would find on, say, Amazon, are the chief editors. I think these are cases of citation errors (intentional or unintentional). --Jiuguang (talk) 13:26, 22 August 2008 (UTC)

Thank you for your desire to improve the usability of wikipedia. However please don't add categories to pages where you don't have firsthand knowledge or references, such as you did with Category:Roboticists for Mark Overmars‎ and some others. Re: Mark Overmars

My reasoning was that, though some of Mark's work has theoretical implications in robotics, "roboticist" implies a more direct involvement. It would be like (to use a moderately exaggerated example) classifying a nanotech researcher as a bicycle engineer. Perhaps we could replace it with Category:Artificial intelligence researchers? — xDanielx T/C\R 18:34, 2 October 2008 (UTC)

If you look at his journal articles list (let's say, post-2000, or the first 30 articles), about 30% are published in robotics journals. I don't know how much more "directly involved" a researcher can be. This is not just the applications of computational geometry in robotics (like your example), but really robotics-focused article (see, for example, Planning time-minimal safe path amidst unpredictably moving obstacles). As for Category:Artificial intelligence researchers, I don't see much publications in AI journals - and I also don't consider motion planning a subfield of AI. Overall, most roboticists can be classified as AI researchers, and given Overmars' fundamental contributions to robotics (specifically), I think the current category is more appropriate. --Jiuguang (talk) 19:04, 2 October 2008 (UTC)

Hey, back in July you tagged Automatic number plate recognition as a WP:ROBO topic. The reason I found out about this is that the article is currently on FAR. Now I know this is arguable either way, but I don't think ANPR is necessarily robotics as it is AI. Now I know we cover AI a lot in WP:ROBO, but it turns out if you search Wikipedia:WikiProject Artificial intelligence, you'll find that it actually redirects to Wikipedia:WikiProject Computer science. I think it may be time to let WP:WPCS know about the FAR on ANPR as well as assess what topics should WP:WPCS cover on AI, and what we should be covering in WP:ROBO. - Jameson L. I have asked them to consider checking to see if ANPR is something within their WP scope so the next step would be having them to tag it into their WikiProject, at which point we can revisit whether we would like to keep the article in our CompVision/AI "mini-task force". I just don't think it's right to abandon the article mid-FAR and have no WikiProjects assigned to collaborate and fix its FA status. Oh yeah, there's no rush, so I'll try to work to keep it on FA depending on how the FAR goes. I'll try to keep you updated. Hi Jiuguang. Thanks for your expert opinion. I think it brings some new perspective into the discussion. And indeed, it has been almost a year since we last spoke. I guess we went two separate ways. I from visualization and systems engineering to enterprise architecture, and you into robotics. I have just looked into some of your latest work, and I think you are doing great. Your list of contributions is impressive.
I did notice a lot of orphan tags (and some reference tags) which have been there for a few months now. These should be relatively easy to avoided by adding a "see also" section in every article, even the stubs. This will give any reader the opportunity to move on after he read the article. Particle swarm optimization

Hi Marcel - my interpretation of the guidelines is that the links should be removed; however, I do not believe this has been systematically implemented across algorithms-related articles. It's done on some, not done on others, and unless someone higher up makes a decision to clean up all such articles, this debate is a waste of time. There's really no right answer.
It's kind of funny that this debate occurs in the particle swarm optimization article - when I wrote my first conference paper in the summer of 2008, the topic was on the application of stochastic optimization (particularly PSO) to control theory and I found my PSO code on that very page. Yes, it's useful for users, but just not very encyclopedic.
I hope you are doing well. It's been a long time since I last edited an article (grad school sort of consumes my life right now), but I hope to get back to this place, soon --Jiuguang (talk) 23:11, 3 October 2010 (UTC)

I think that an article on ordinal optimization would be a great addition to Wikipedia. However, IMHO, your article needs more work before it is ready for Wikipedia. Maybe you could develop/expand it, while maintaining it in your sandbox. You might find related content by using Mathematical Reviews, searching for books and surveys with the categories 90 (Optimization) and 06 (Order & Lattice theory). I have just restored the article which you decided to remove and replace with a redirect.

You were wrong to do this as service robots have many functions, of which domestic robots are merely a sub-type. I would have thought that someone at Carnegie Mellon would have realised that?

Apparently I did that in 2008 - so first of all, kudos on digging that up. Now, as I am indeed from CMU and apparently know how to Google stuff, I know the "official" IFR definition of service robot is "a robot which operates semi- or fully autonomously to perform services useful to the well-being of humans and equipment, excluding manufacturing operations" [5]. This would exclude the industrial robots you listed and make "scientific robots" an debatable choice (the phrase "scientific robots", by the way, seems made up - most articles are talking about rovers). Ultimately, the vast majority of the service robots in the existing robotics journals and conferences [6] are about domestic service robots, so I stand by my original edit. Feel free to write another technically correct article with more than two sentences and some verifiable sources and I'll be happy to see a stand-alone article on service robots --Jiuguang (talk) 23:25, 31 January 2011 (UTC)
And here is the quote we need - not quite the picture you painted is it ? It even tells you that manipulating industrial robots could also be regarded as service robots...
"Service robots have no strict internationally accepted definition, which, among other things, delimits them from other types of equipment, in particular the manipulating industrial robot. IFR, however, have adopted a preliminary definition
A service robot is a robot which operates semi- or fully autonomously to perform services useful to the well-being of humans and equipment, excluding manufacturing operations.

Oh, sure, any robot that does anything "useful" for us is a service robot. I'm sure you can go nuts with examples. My problem has been the quality of the article (both before and after the resurrection). You are invited to the National Archives ExtravaSCANza, taking place every day next week from January 4–7, Wednesday to Saturday, in College Park, Maryland (Washington, DC metro area). Come help me cap off my stint as Wikipedian in Residence at the National Archives with one last success!

This will be a casual working event in which Wikipedians are getting together to scan interesting documents at the National Archives related to a different theme each day—currently: spaceflight, women's suffrage, Chile, and battleships—for use on Wikipedia/Wikimedia Commons. The event is being held on multiple days, and in the evenings and weekend, so that as many locals and out-of-towners from nearby regions1 as possible can come. Please join us!
