Ranmoor

Hi, I disagree with your point about not needing to disambiguate Ranmoor. In most cases I would agree with you, but Ranmoor House is usually abrieviated by Sheffield students to Ranmoor, and I think a common alias is good grounds for a disambig to link to it. --Nathan (Talk) 03:40, 19 February 2006 (UTC)

Re: Protection on Abortion

If you check the edit history of the Abortion article, you'll see the same edit — "fetus or embryo" changed to "human being" — made under a litany of sockpuppet accounts, often using fallacious edit summaries in a vain attempt to mask the vandalism:

Under the username BigBear, he reverted to an old version of the vandalized page, reverting newer, legitimate edits along with it. This gave the false impression of he having made more changes than simply the hit-and-run POV edit made to the opening sentence. The truth is that there is no content dispute. There is nothing to discuss. This is a case of trolling, plain and simple -- and, at that, sloppy trolling. If there is any way to alter the protection warning to reflect that, please do. I disagree with you as to the deletion of the "Xalwine" page. it is valid lore here in South Jersey. the sourse of many campfire tales. all i desired was a place where it could be told around a larger "campfire" please undelete the name please.

Thanks for your attention to the image that Xalwine (talk · contribs) linked from my talk page. I didn't want to deal with the image earlier because this user is a sock puppet for Asquared (talk · contribs) and I suspected that the image may be some kind of personal attack—so I didn't want to view it at work. As it turns out it was just a straight forward copyvio, so I have deleted it. Thanks also for reverting vandalism at the Sheffield article today. Also, I noticed that you added to the Millhouses article information on the former train shed—including that it is still standing. I was under the impression that Tescos had demolished it, so I was quite pleased to discover that this is not the case. If you happened to be in the area could you get a photo? Wow! I have a book which has two b/w photos showing the shed in 1953 and a colour shot of it in 1961 (five weeks before it closed)—it is almost unrecognisable from the photos that you took, it's really only the distinctive roofline that gives it away. Thanks, JeremyA 01:18, 24 February 2006 (UTC)

If you think that you have enough material (other than photos--an article that is mostly photos is likely to get put on AfD) then go for it. Although it is not a listed building, I think that the Millhouses shed is notable because a number of the popular Jubilee class locomotives were allocated there. I would certianly be happy to contribute any extra information that I have (Do you have the Peter Fox book on the Midland line in Sheffield? -- it has a reasonable amount of information on the shed). Would you put the article at Millhouses locomotive shed, Millhouses MPD, Millhouses Motive Power Depot, or something else?

If you don't think that you have enough material for an article then a section in the Millhouses article would be good. In fact, you could always start it as a section of the Millhouses article and break it out into its own article at a later date. Another idea would be to make it part of a wider article on the railway in Millhouses. That way you could cover the passenger station, goods station (??-there is a goods station marked on the old OS maps, although I have never seen anything written about it-??), MPD and signal box. Alternatively, I think that an article on the 1870 extension of the Midland Line through Sheffield would be good. That could cover the Bradway tunnel; Dore (already has its own article), Beauchief, Millhouses and Heeley stations; the Millhouses shed and the Heeley carriage sidings. Nice one Jeremy. I do have much information on the shed, just that I like to illustrate articles with relevant imagery. I have the North Midland Route books (amongst others). I can ultimately edit articles about the entinre line from Derby to Leeds, but as a Sheffielder i can't decently edit Leeds articles. I have already edited the Dore & Totley railway station article as well as the Totley Tunnel one. If i were to start an article on the shed i'd probably name it Millhouses Engine Shed as I've seen it called. One could also add several redirects.

Millhouses did ultimately have 4 platforms, a shed and a goods yard, as well as a turntable (near to what is now the Sheaf Walk pontoon). The station house is still there with a semaphore in its garden. (pardon the spelling it's Friday evening and I'm off on annual leave tomorrow). Captain scarlet 21:00, 24 February 2006 (UTC)

Definitely go for it then. As far as I can work out they had demolished the last remnants of the station a couple of years before my family moved to Millhouses (we lived on Hastings Road). I was about 11 at the time and I can remember exploring (read trespassing) in the area where Tesco's is now, including what I later took to be the engine shed--but at that time I didn't know that there had been a shed there, so I didn't take much notice. Somewhere I have a good b/w photo that I took of the old station house--the last time I was in Sheffield they had painted it some ungodly shade of pink (I think... maybe it was yellow). OK, didn't remember the specifics on prod. The only pages linking to the article are valujet and valujet 592, the article already had been merged into the latter article. I could see keeping the redirect if other pages linked to it. Either way, the content is duplicated in the crash article.

Supporting a vandal?

You have protected the article on Toruń against editwars after an edit by User:Tirid Tirid - which was done in a row of at least three reverts (rv to Molobo), back to the versions of a well-known Polish user. In the edits on Warmia, Tirid Tirid deleted 4 interwiki-links [1]. Do you really consider it appropriate to protect an article just after such a user has reverted it? Critical_Mass (activist) v. Critical_mass

hello JeremyA,

i wanted to discuss the /wiki/Critical_Mass (activist) v. /wiki/Critical_mass change. i changed Critical_Mass to Critical_Mass (activist) because i had the idea (and the experience) that the capital M of Critical_Mass and m of Critical_mass are not able to be seperate entries in some computer systems (like my MOS OS X). if i attempt to save the file i get a 'duplicate file warning'. i have the idea that capitalization is not recognizable (for some machines) in the URL. would you be willing to be ameniable to changing back to /wiki/Critical_Mass (activist) ?

Hi! There have previously been suggestions to move the Critical Mass article to Critical Mass (bicycle) but the consensus was that this was not necessary. I also have a Mac (OS X 10.4.5) and it has no problem seeing the difference between Critical Mass and Critical mass in any browser that I have tried (Safari, Firefox, Camino). Critical Mass (activist) would be a particularly bad place title for the article because, in my experience, most of the people riding Critical Mass don't consider themselves 'activists'--they are just going out on their bicycles. hello JeremyA i was using Safari 2.0.3 and OS 10.4.4 and attempted to keep a copy of /wiki/Critical_mass via (Save As ...) and received a dialog box saying i already had /wiki/Critical_Mass on my computer. indeed i do download copies of articles to read when i am out of internet range. that was the problem i experienced specifically. as a side issue i will find out the differences between capitalization for URLs. i agree that some participants of Critical Mass may not identify as "activists" yet most i saw and identified were activists by my definition. maybe it was the rides i was on or the friends i have or the area (city) i was at. thank you for your consideration. i do not need any further changes made to /wiki/Critical_Mass rkmlai 05:14, 6 March 2006 (UTC)

It was simply an misunderstanding of protocol. ComoAnda meets requirements for Criterion 3 of WP:WEB - content is distributed via a site which is both well known and independent of the creators. Article was edited, explaining ComoAnda's involvement in opensearch(A9), after the proposed deletion comments were made. Norgs deletion

In the warning you posted on top of the norgs deletion thread, you mentioned ballot stuffing. That term implies an amount of bad faith that I think is absent from the comments posted so far. From what I can see, all commenters have made an effort to present reasoned opinions and rational argument. I feel that your warning is a little too strong, and will ultimately discourage new members from participating in the site. Coordinate Header

Hi Jeremy, The coorheader has been changed and now shows the coordinates down at the bottom rather than in the header, I shall be removing this new template until this change is reverted as this new setting spoils articles using it rather than enhancing them. I am rather annoyed at this recent change but I'm trying to keep on a brave face. If you have a ny template in a secret draw somewhere, go for it. They're still playing with this tag system. Although I like having the coordinates at the top of the article like that, I suggest that we both hold off from adding the tempate to any more articles until those that are working on the template are satisfied with it. JeremyA 00:47, 3 April 2006 (UTC)

Station naming

I know this has caused many arguments in th past, but, I have renamed all the closed stations' articles' names to edit out railway. This is because I believe Wikipedia is an encyclopdia, not a timetable, and since station names on maps and in books bare the name (eg:) Broughton Lane Station, I have renamed the articles that way. Redirects are in place in case of and I will gradually make sure nothing points to the old and unappropriate names. Concerning Meadowhall, I would like to rename the station's article to Meadowhal Interchange as to not confuse it with Meadowhall Station, on the GCR. When you upload a file to Wikipedia with a {{GFDL-self}} tag, you release from any copyright restriction for Wikipedia's use. It is very unusual and unorthodox to assert that you retain the copyright of it, and it is certainly extremely confusing to readers. In any case, I do not believe it's possible for you to claim copyright for this particular image as you don't appear to have contributed any creative work to it: the statistics themselves are public domain, and as noted on the image the graphic design was made by a software package. Sheffield and Rotherham Railway

I believe you and Captain Scarlet may live close to Sheffield and may have an interest in the fact that Rotherhamweb have pinched large chunks of Wikipedia for their page Railways of South Yorkshire.

Wikipedia material is of course open for anyone to use but I thought people were supposed to acknowledge it. On the other hand, I guess they can't complain if we pinch their images! Chevin 15:44, 10 April 2006 (UTC)

I noticed that you removed my (unsigned) edit adding Rt. Hon. to David Blunkett's picture on his page. There doesn't seem to be any rigid coherence as to whether this form is used on photographs, but many privy councillors' pictures have it. Do you know if there is a policy on this?

Hi! Thanks for your quick response to the editor adding links to the weather websites - I was just looking for somewhere to report it (didn't think WP:AIV was quite appropriate), as the websites are irrelevant and full of pop-ups "checking" my computer.

Image copyright problem with Image:Ludlow4.jpg

Image:Ludlow4.jpg was an open source picture but for some reason that option won't appear under the liscensing. However I have decided not to post the picture so you may go ahead and delete it anyway.
