References at Radiologists Without Borders

Without references, no chance. See WP:RS and look for refs that meet that policy. If the article goes, still find the refs and ask an admin (such as me) if they are good enough, and if they are, if the admin will restore the article into your userspace for more work. I have references from outside sources (i.e. http://www.itnonline.com/content/radiologists-without-borders-heart-radiology) which I have not yet published as I am currently working on this article, although over 90% of the Doctors without Borders/MSF references are from their own website, so I would assume that would valid to earn a reference title as well?Jennifergr (talk) 22:19, 14 December 2012 (UTC)

status and aadvice

As reviewing administrator, I looked at the article, and the references indicate possible importance enough that the article will not be speedy deleted. Therefore, I didn't delete it--you can go right ahead and work on it.

More is needed. You can use material from their own site to explain the facts of what they do. Use the information you have about the organization to expand on the number of participants, the number of missions and people served, the organizational affiliations.

But a WP article needs to show what we call "notability" by having references providing substantial coverage from 3rd party independent published reliable sources, print or online, but not blogs or press releases, or material derived from press releases. The ones you have added do it to some extent; you would do well to have others. If the organization is substantial, it will have done many missions, and these will have been written about, both at home and in the host country. Any language will do here. Add what you can find.

With a little more work it should hold. I advise you to fix the problems quickly, before the article gets nominated for deletion by a regular deletion process--anyone here can always do this.

And for the future you now understand that it's best not to press save until you've got something substantial, with at least one reference.

It's great that you have continued here after your project for the educational program. This is just what we aim at, and you are one of our successes! I'm even more happy you persevered after the problems with your first independent article--things can be tricky here, and you've show the necessary patience. As you see, people are ready to help. I work here primarily to rescue new articles and almost all I look at are impossible to rescue, so I'm delighted to have helped a little with this one--and that you had basically rescued it yourself, without my having to do work on it.

I took the liberty of fixing the links to your Contributions page on your User page--what we usually call the contributions page is generated automatically. But if that is not what you intended to do, and you meant to make a separate list of what you have contributed to substantially or created yourself, just revert my changes--and you might then want to call it something like "My articles". Thanks for message, which i assume relates to Draft:Brian Brown. Lots of problems.

• When you write about a person, you must provide independent verifiable sources to enable us to verify the facts and show that they meet the notability guidelines for academics. Sources that are not acceptable include those linked to the person or an associated organisation, press releases, YouTube, IMDB, social media and other sites that can be self-edited, blogs, websites of unknown or non-reliable provenance, and sites that are just reporting what the person claims or interviewing them. Note that references should be in-line so we can tell what fact each is supporting, and should not be bare urls.

• Most of your refs are to his own publications, which are not independent third-party sources, nor are his faculty page or Oncorus.

• You claim that his publications are "notable", but publications are not a criterion for notability, it's part of the job. He is probably notable, but there is little in your text to explain why, with proper third-party refs.

• There shouldn't be any url links in the article, only in the "References" or "External links" sections.

• Your text is littered with links to his publications, which shouldn't be there and are pointless anyway since most are just abstracts, not full text

• You must not copy text from elsewhere. Copyrighted text is not allowed in Wikipedia, as outlined in this policy. That applies even to pages created by you or your organisation, unless they state clearly and explicitly that the text is public domain. We require that text posted here can be used, modified and distributed for any purpose, including commercial; text is considered to be copyright unless explicitly stated otherwise. There are ways to donate copyrighted text to Wikipedia, as described here; please note that simply asserting on the talk page that you are the owner of the copyright, or you have permission to use the text, isn't sufficient.

• I didn't check for copyright, but the lack of proper refs and minimal wikilinks raises some questions. You haven't linked, for example RNA, vector, virus, genetic, cancer, clinical trials, genomics, barcoding, T cell dysfunction or tumor

• You must write in a non-promotional tone. Articles must be neutral and encyclopaedic, with verifiable facts, not opinions or reviews.

• This article seems to serve little purpose but to promote him and his work. Opinions like novel... widely used... first-of-its-kind are sourced to his own work, and the externally linked list of supposed "notable" publications looks promotional as well as pointless. Although it's not, this looks just like the kind of autobiographical page that many editors attempt to write

Thanks for your response and all of this additional info! I had tried to model after other scientist pages of similar research areas that don't seem to have been flagged (I assume due to the sheer amount of articles) and didn't realize they weren't appropriate examples. My original sources for notability were from researching media articles/science coverage that referenced the publications, I just incorrectly assumed the independent journals' publication and citation record was more indicative of academic/industry impact than media coverage which is why I took those out of the research. Are academic journal citations not recommended for any of these or helpful when added to media coverage? Clinical trials from NIH referenced are also not related to the researcher/related institutions, are these considered independent third party references?

I will work further on this one to add those back in and adjust the tone. I can't seem to get back to the original draft - do you know if it was deleted permanently/unretrievable? It took a few hours to get it formatted specific for Wikipedia/references so I wanted to salvage what I could rather than recreate if possible. Thank you!
