Welcome!

Hello, Jdcollins13, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Unfortunately, one or more of the pages you created, such as Hooks (grappling), may not conform to some of Wikipedia's guidelines, and may soon be deleted.

There's a page about creating articles you may want to read called Your first article. If you are stuck, and looking for help, please come to the New contributors' help page, where experienced Wikipedians can answer any queries you have! Or, you can just type {{helpme}} on this page, and someone will show up shortly to answer your questions. Here are a few other good links for newcomers:

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! Please sign your name on talk pages using four tildes (~~~~); this will automatically produce your name and the date. If you have any questions, check out Wikipedia:Questions or ask me on my talk page. Again, welcome! WuhWuzDat 16:55, 22 December 2010 (UTC)

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Hooks (grappling) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a very short article providing little or no context to the reader. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hang on}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion, or "db", tag; if no such tag exists, then the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate and adding a hang-on tag is unnecessary), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. WuhWuzDat 16:55, 22 December 2010 (UTC)

Icon publishers

Hello. You recently added a citation to a book from the "Webster's Quotations, Facts and Phrases" series published by Icon Group International to this article. Unfortunately, Icon Group International is not a reliable source - their books are computer-generated, with most of the text copied from Wikipedia (most entries have [WP] by them to indicate this, see e.g.[1]).

These arecircular references and many other editors have also been duped by these sources. Despite giving an appearance of reliability, the name "Webster's" has been public domain since the late 19th century. Another publisher to be wary of as they reuse Wikipedia articles is Alphascript Publishing. Dougweller (talk) 12:44, 1 February 2011 (UTC)

Much appreciated, thank you for removing that.Jdcollins13 (talk) 16:01, 2 February 2011 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for File:Oleanna Movie Cover.jpg

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Oleanna Movie Cover.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the file description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Non-free use disputed for File:Cane_masters.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:Cane_masters.jpg. Unfortunately, I think that you have not provided a proper rationale for using this image under "fair use". Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page. Note that the image description page must include the exact name or a link to each article the image is used in and a separate rationale for each one. (If a link is used, automated processes may improperly add the related tag to the image. Please change the fair use template to refer to the exact name, if you see this warning.)

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted after seven days according to our Criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. Rubber guard flowchart

Thank you for the Rubber Guard flowchart, but I spotted what I think is a small error. Going upward and right from "Clear the Head" is an arrow that appears to originate at "Mission Control," but the colour changes as the arrow goes behind "Clear the Head" to match that of "Clear the Head" instead of staying the colour of "Mission Control." Nutster (talk) 15:05, 28 June 2011 (UTC)

Hi Nutster, I think you're right that it is a bit ambiguous because of the same angle being used, the real path is actually Mission Control to Spider Web, you can see the orange arrow passes behind Clear the Head and straight to Spider Web. I'll work on making the flow more clear. Thanks for pointing that out. Jdcollins13 (talk) 15:19, 28 June 2011 (UTC)
I agree that the new version of the graphic is definitely clearer. It is probably best not to change arrow direction while hiding behind other elements. It gets too confusing. Thank you for clarifying. Nutster (talk) 01:54, 29 June 2011 (UTC)
That is a prudent observation, one I've taken to heart and updated the chart a bit more, thanks for your very helpful constructive criticism. Jdcollins13 (talk) 14:16, 29 June 2011 (UTC)

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Belt Rank pics

Hey JD, nice job on replacing those old PNG belt pics with the SVG ones. Much cleaner and better looking. I originally made those PNG ones from the judo belt pics and never really intended for them to look super nice. Again, thanks. Let me know if there are any MA projects I can help you with! Cheers, Buddy23Lee (talk) 20:55, 29 June 2011 (UTC)

Hi Buddy23Lee, thanks a lot, I'm glad you approve. This was actually my first time converting to .svg so I'm glad they came out ok. I'm not really working on anything accept making sure all the major martial arts have high quality images in their articles. Cheers! Jdcollins13 (talk) 22:11, 29 June 2011 (UTC)
Goodtimes my friend. And just on an aside, I like what you've started with your Grappler's Quest page. That sizable event is overdue for an article. I just created a stub for Bill "The Grill" Cooper the other day and discovered I had no grappler's quest page to wikilink him to. Lameness. Let me know if you'd like any assistance on getting that page to article space! Buddy23Lee (talk) 19:18, 14 July 2011 (UTC)
I would love some help with the Grapplers Quest article! It's proved to be more of a challenge than I had originally thought, due in part to the fact that the Grapplers Quest website is so buggy and cumbersome. Getting any information off of it (especially while at work) is very difficult. Feel free to edit it in my namespace if you'd like. {PS: I added a photo request to your article, hoping that maybe some Wikipedian out there owns rights to an image of "the Grill" that you can use} Jdcollins13 (talk) 22:10, 14 July 2011 (UTC)

Archives of American Art Update!

Hi! I just wanted to deliver a little news about the Archives of American Art partnership project! We have released our amazing barnstar to the world, learn how you can earn one here! We will be having a Backstage Pass tour later this month which will be announced this week, and an upcoming contest in which major contributors can win some amazing goodies from the Archives and Smithsonian, allowing for international involvement! Thanks again for your interest and I look forward to your continued participation in this ongoing project to better coverage on American art history on Wikipedia! Grapplers Quest

Thanks for the invite, and thanks for the photo request! I've already added a little bit of content to the article. Feel free to delete or modify anything I do, I have no ego about anything I add and ultimately it's your article. Not sure how much I'll get done this weekend, but next week I'll take to sourcing everything. Also, not so sure what to do about the history section. If nothing good can be gleaned straight from the web, I might just email Mr. Cimins and see what info I can get. :) Buddy23Lee (talk) 19:09, 15 July 2011 (UTC)

Wow it looks great! I think its off to a good start, really appreciate the help. Everything you did looks good to me. It isn't really mine I just started it, eventually its going to belong to everyone anyway. Sounds good about the history thing too, that would be great if we could get some info first hand. How can we keep that out of the realm of original research? I guess we might just have to find corroboration for whatever he tells you. In any case thanks again, great work. Jdcollins13 (talk) 19:29, 15 July 2011 (UTC)
Good sir (JD?), might you take a gander at the Grapplers Quest page and let me know your thoughts? Everything should be sourced and I believe sufficient notability has been established, at least enough to prevent deletion until more can be found (this is of course extra tricky considering that the Grapplers Quest page has been created and deleted twice over now, as I discovered). I think the more recent collaborations with the UFC will be particularly helpful in this regard. I guess the one thing I'm not sure about is whether or not to try and include all of the weight class and results info. It could make for one lengthy page. We could always make a make a main GQ page and then seperate results and/or divisions pages to reduce the words. Anyway, just let me know what you think. :) Buddy23Lee (talk) 18:55, 19 July 2011 (UTC)
feel free to call me Joel, I think you are correct, it it ready for the main namespace! you've done an excellent job at developing it, especially in such a short time. True it was deleted before but I doubt there were as many sourced claims, nor perhaps had the notability risen sufficiently yet to support a following of wiki editors to maintain it. In any case I think we can safely say it will survive and hopefully thrive. Thank you so much again for picking up where I left off. Jdcollins13 (talk) 21:03, 19 July 2011 (UTC)
Cool Joel, I'm glad we were able to get it finished and out to article space. I think those pix were a good addition to it. I also think you're right about notability; take a look at what the old article looked like off this mirror site. I'd say we stepped it up a notch. :) Anyway, let me know if any other projects come up you might like assistance with as I'm always glad to help! Buddy23Lee (talk) 17:14, 20 July 2011 (UTC)

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Your recent edits on Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu did not adhere to WP:FURTHER + WP:SEEALSO. In addition, your copyedit did not improve the article as per WP:RELTIME. Generally, you might find WP:MOS a helpful reading. Thanks for your editing efforts. Looking forward to your future contributions. --Fayerman (talk) 14:33, 15 September 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for catching those, how embarrassing. Would you agree that the See Also section could benefit from a bit of pruning? In any case, Thanks for your help. Jdcollins13 (talk) 14:53, 15 September 2011 (UTC)
Absolutely. I think only Judo, Jujutsu, and List of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioners should stay. Maybe Daitō-ryū Aiki-jūjutsu (Aiki-jujutsu) too. I would def remove: 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu, Sambo, Pankration, Mundials, Mixed martial arts, Catch Wrestling, ADCC Submission Wrestling World Championship.
I agree, I'll go ahead with those changes. Once again thank you.Jdcollins13 (talk) 15:08, 15 September 2011 (UTC)

Judo technique infoboxes

Hi, I like what you're doing with these, it would be nice to have the techniques articles more standardised. I think, perhaps, it's over-complicating matters to include information on which competition rule-sets allow them in the infobox. Catfish Jim and the soapdish 09:51, 17 April 2012 (UTC)

Thanks Jim, and thanks for the feedback, I'll look for a simpler way to get the info across, I did notice that listing olympic/comp is fairly redundant as I haven't come across any technique that is allowed in regular comp but not in the olympics.
  • PS: do you mind if I copy your comment to the talkpage of the Judo infobox? — Jdcollins13 (talk) 12:59, 17 April 2012 (UTC)
Not at all Catfish Jim and the soapdish 13:36, 17 April 2012 (UTC)
One concern is that some techniques are prohibited completely, whereas some are allowed under certain circumstances. Leg grabs, for example, are perfectly legal if you're being held in certain grips, or as a counter or as a combination... could get messy if that's forced into the infobox! Catfish Jim and the soapdish 13:36, 17 April 2012 (UTC)
Very true, I didn't consider the fact of variability, I guess the best place for that info is the body. I'll remove it entirely. Thank you again. — Jdcollins13 (talk) 13:43, 17 April 2012 (UTC)

Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Ken throws blanka SFII.jpg

Thank you for uploading File:Ken throws blanka SFII.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. J Milburn (talk) 22:14, 26 May 2012 (UTC)

I have amended the rational and created a File talk page on the subject. Thank you for notifying me with this concern. — Jdcollins13 13:49, 29 May 2012 (UTC)
