Feel free to write the article again in your own words, though I doubt she's terribly notable - maybe for the court case, nd even then - should the info go into the article about the case instead? - CrazyRussian talk/email 18:57, 2 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

She is notable for the court case and the Rabbinic opinions, not as a person. But the court case should be somewhere to refer to it from other pages. As you know I found myself doing this from Rabbi Waldenberg.

Thanks for adding some facts about Avi Weiss. Please remember to WP:CITE your facts. One of the nice thing about the AW article is that it's fairly well cited - let's keep it that way. --Bachrach44 22:41, 8 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! Compared to the daily or worse vandalism that articles like Who is a Jew and Bible get, the weekly vandalism this one gets is comparatively mild. Also, most of it really isn't vandalism -- it's newbies (I don't know if they're sockpuppets) with an axe to grind offering opinionated, usually unsourced content, which is not ideal but nonetheless represent legitimate attempts to edit rather than the sort of things hardcore vandals put in (which tend to involve things like 4-letter words and more than you'd care to know about their self-reported exploits with their girlfriends). It seems to me that vandalism is a price of a user-editable encyclopedia, and if we start blocking more articles, we should do it as a general policy and start with articles that are much more regularly vandalized than this one. But you're welcome to talk to an admin about your concerns (like User:Crzrussian, User:JoshuaZ, User:TShilo12). Best, --Shirahadasha 17:03, 5 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your kind words. I'll do it for these, but for future articles you might want to bring the AfD to the attention of Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Judaism‎ --Shirahadasha 19:40, 28 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Jayrav. Thanks for the work on the smaller midrashim article. I *am* still working on it, however (hence the "inuse" template), so I'll be making some more changes in the next couple days. When I'm all done I will take down the "inuse" tag, and then feel free to pounce. Thanks. —Dfass 04:26, 29 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm all for working together, but it's easier if we actually communicate about it in advance. In any case, my plan for the smaller midrashim article was to move all the text for the individual midrashim each into its own article, and then just have a bulleted list linking to each independent article. So I will eventually have to undo some of your work, for example, I will turn the headings back into bullets at some point (since there's no sense in having empty headings). I'm sure you dislike having your work undone as much as I do, so this why it's best to communicate in advance. (I know I keep "inuse" tags on articles much longer than recommended, so people probably think I've forgotten them, but I haven't.) Anyway, have a good night. Talk to you later. —Dfass 04:51, 29 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I'm done with it, so it's all yours. Have fun. —Dfass 19:09, 29 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

National Conference of Synagogue Youth[edit]

  • I want to make you aware that the 'Criticism' section you added to the NCSY article was removed by an anomymous user at IP address 208.120.89.146[3]. Although I do not believe that your addition was necessarily neutral or complete, your information was verifiably cited, albeit in an unusual manner, to legitimate sources. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Infoman99 (talkcontribs) 03:25, 1 May 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Hi Shira. I have not been active for a while. But my watchpage has filled up with an over 6 reverse edit war on the NCSY page. Can you handle this? And is there a guideline page for an outsider to manage an edit war. --Jayrav 23:44, 17 May 2007 (UTC) Further note- It seems that this is similar to the edit war that occured on the Shlomo Carlebach page over having a criticism section. If I remember correctly, someone set a up a nice explantion and warning on that talk page. --Jayrav 01:09, 18 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'll take care of it. FYI the section involved isn't simply criticism of NCSY, it's a claim that NCSY has responsibility for the Baruch Lanner affair -- serious defamation and WP:BLP issues, and it's not clear the source provided is reliable. Am encouraging folks to cool off, and create a Baruch Lanner page and ensure their sourcing meets Wikipedia standards before adding material on the issue to the NCSY page. --Shirahadasha 03:56, 18 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Also, I couldn't find a guide to admins for how to manage an edit war. But it's a great idea! Have you thought of writing one? Best, --Shirahadasha 03:56, 18 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

NCSY related: The Jewish Student Union page is besieged by those insisting that verifiable and notable information is "irrelevant," and instead, quotes from NCSY/JSU staff are being inserted at great length as "proof" of the JSU non-denominational approach. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jewish_Student_Union. Please see discussion page. Your input would be helpful, thanks.Mrnhghts (talk) 19:10, 15 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Idea for Talmud articles[edit]

Hi Jayrav: I am reposting the following request from User Sh76us (talk · contribs) on my user talk page for wider notification:

I was thinking of trying to stimulate development of a series of articles on Gemara concepts and doctrines, maybe to help children or newcomers to Gemara with explanations of some fundamental concepts that recur throughout the Gemara. Some examples might be articles on Yiush, Chazakah, Ta'aninun (as in "Ta'aninun L'Yoresh"), Eidim Zomemin (forgive my awful transliterations), Migu, etc., etc. Maybe we could even create a category or subcategory for it. I created Breira in this vein. As I don't have the experience or expertise in Wikipedia to know what to do to best develop this idea, I figured I'd come to you for your opinions on: (1) whether it's a good idea; and (2) How to best go about implementing it. Thanks Sh76us (talk) 15:56, 14 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Toledano Tradition[edit]

Jayrav, I decided to take this off the AfD page, and move it here. The AfD page is getting a little complex. Malcolm Schosha (talk) 21:59, 24 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Jayrav, In the Kabbalah article there is now only a short mention of the debate over Neoplatonic influence, in the last paragraph here[[4]]. It would be good to expand this and/or link to a separate article on the subject. (But, truthfully, that whole section, as it now is, seems very speculative, and disorganized too. I am disinclined to remove any of it because I have hopes someone with the necessary knowledge will improve it.) Malcolm Schosha
Thanks for your work on the Kabbalah article. I am out of steam for today, so will think about other changes tomorrow. Malcolm Schosha (talk) 01:37, 25 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Orthodox[edit]

Please read the Wikipedia Manual of Style and at least try to maintain Wikipedia style guidelines when you do a major reorganization of an article. Also, typically, editors will discuss such major changes with other editors before engaging in such a major revision. Valtyr (talk) 16:18, 26 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Jayrav, please don't get so excited:

What are you talking about? The material on the sefirot was from the Gershom Scholem approach and was sourced accordingly. It was not Neoplatonism but Scholem on pre-ZOhar usage of the term in yetzirah and Bahir. At point, MAlcolm, you got to say what counts as a real source for you? What history of the kabblah? If JE does not count nor Scholem, then what? If you are Chabad, or Kabbalah centre or Aryeh Kaplan then say so and we can note the different approaches accordingly. But to take out gershom Scholem material and say it is the same as warren Kenton, I dont understand. --Jayrav (talk) 14:36, 6 March 2008 (UTC)

Remember, I tried to save your edits that broke up the article into more manageable parts, and Abafied forced the revert of that while you were ill. Anyhow, I gave further explanation on the article's talk page, as you will no doubt see. Malcolm Schosha (talk) 20:30, 6 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Kabbalah and rabbis[edit]

Hi Jayrav: The recent conflicts over issues pertaining to rabbis and the question of how to deal with the Kabbalah article's organization may require more attention that we can discuss if you contact me. Sincerely and Shavua Tov. IZAK (talk) 04:31, 2 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You made a comment on the AfD that originally the term wasn't simply a random name for a synagogue, but referred to a specific type -- an Orthodox synagogue with mixed seating. Do you have any sources for this? If there is actually a subject to write about here rather than a random list of synagogues that would be interesting. Was there ever an actual movement or organization? Best, --Shirahadasha (talk) 22:17, 2 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

An example of a Beth El synagogue that currently has both a United-Synagogue affiliated Conservative group and an OU-affiliated Orthodox group: [5], [6]. It's certainly consistent with your thesis about origins. Best, --Shirahadasha (talk) 00:15, 3 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Jacob B. Agus[edit]

The point of a speedy template is to alert an admin that an article merits speedy deletion, and since I am an admin, that has no relevance. The article was full of unsourced POV claims which were without in-line citations to relaible independent sources. For example, the opening sentence: leading liberal Conservative rabbi, scholar, educator philosopher and theologian who played a key role in the Conservative Rabbinical Assembly.

I'm not prepared to recreated in its current form, but I'll put the text here shortly. I've slightly amended the formatting. The book references need page numbers and isbn numbers, and I suggest that when you are ready to recreate you do so at Jacob B. Agus, since the full stop is normal. jimfbleak (talk) 14:36, 5 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

that looks pretty good to me, just recreate at Jacob B. Agus. A couple of minor points you may want to consider
  • Temple University, Dropsie College - could you add a location, so that non-Americans like me have some idea where they are?
  • Book titles should be italicised
  • The web references and neater are more user friendly if written as [url description] like the one I changed in the references
jimfbleak (talk) 16:11, 5 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It astounds me that this article could ever have been the target of speedy deletion. It could use some expansion and additional sourcing, as all articles could, and I did some cleanup. Sorry I took so long to get to it, but it seems that it would be an unlikely speedy target at this point. Chag Kasher V'Sameach. Alansohn (talk) 14:34, 6 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
