The Beach Boys - numbers as figures or words

I was looking at your recent edit to The Beach Boys where you changed many numbers from figures to words in an attempt to comply with WP:NUMERAL. It is not clear to me which provision(s) you were attempting to follow. Some of the edits from figures to text seem inconsistent with the policy. Looking at other articles, numbers that are chart and other list positions are usually represented as figures, in many cases even for numbers less than ten (especially for consistency within a sentence). I'm going to edit The Beach Boys article to revert the edits you made that in my judgment are inconsistent with the policy, but feel free to respond here with your thoughts. --hulmem (talk) 05:36, 5 January 2013 (UTC)

My edit of chart placings and list positions to text was largely grounded from what I'd observed on feature articles within WikiProject Biography / Musicians. For example, the Beatles' article which appears to follow the MOS rather well (evidenced by its FA status) adheres to presenting these values with text rather than numbers. I know it's a minor issue, but I found having a mix of different ways of presenting this type information was rather distracting. Given that something that tops the charts is often cited in text as achieving "number-one", it makes sense to have other chart positions follow a similar way of being displayed. Also, I fixed a number of times where "No." was used instead of "number" within the reverted edit, something which I believe is less controversial, should we not reach consensus on this "numbers and figures or words" dispute, would it be okay for me to make that edit again? Thanks for the thoughtful response. I think The Beatles article is unrepresentative because the group was so popular there is little dicussion of chart positions greater than nine (as of this moment there is only one such reference). The guidance at WP:NUMERAL actually doesn't help much; the first paragraph states

As a general rule, in the body of an article, single-digit whole numbers from zero to nine are spelled out in words; numbers greater than nine, if they are expressed in one or two words, may be rendered in numerals or in words (16 or sixteen, 84 or eighty-four, 200 or two hundred); those requiring more than two words are given in numerals (3.75, 544, 21 million).

The key point is that numbers greater than nine...may be rendered in numerals or in words, so the guidance is ambiguous. Some people, evidently such as yourself, prefer the consistency of using words for all numbers. Others don't care for numbers spelled out as words because they believe doing so is unnecessarily verbose and makes reading a little more difficult (you can read and comprehend "157" faster than "one hundred fifty seven"). In various style guides I have seen the convention to represent single-digit numbers as words and anything else as numerals; single-word numbers as words and anything else as numerals; and single- and double-word numbers as words and anything else as numerals. My impression from reading many Wikipedia articles (especially articles about music) is that most use single-digit numbers as words and anything else as numerals, and for chart positions, many articles use numerals exclusively. For example, see The Association, The Mamas & the Papas, The Grass Roots, The 5th Dimension, Jan and Dean, and The Hollies. Although no one person's opinion really matters, to me it seems clearer to state the position of an item in a list as numerals (instead of words) regardless of the numeric value, and I have seen this convention in a number of articles. So this method also provides consistency, but uses numerals as the consistent form instead of words. So in conclusion, I prefer the Beach Boys article as it currently stands, but I don't like to be anal about such things and will not revert it if you choose to re-edit it according to your personal preference. Brother Studios

I just added the permission statement for File:Brother Studios.jpg, but a vigilant reviewer notes that there was a very different image in the history.

Based upon the note, " Wrong file uploaded.", I assume the first upload was in error, and that you only intend the permission to apply to the current image.

Perhaps not, I'll admit I'm not properly versed with these policies, however, surely placing such emphasis on a quote looking back 40 years in retrospect as a key central argument for why Smile was shelved is potentially damaging, especially the appropriate context has not been established. Without acknowledgement of how Brian's memory has been severely impaired due to health issues or how his story on Smile evolves near every time he talks about it, the edit stands as a flimsy one which is why I thought a case may have built for libel. I gather this is potentially not the case based on your comment, but regardless, I still firmly believe there are better ways of adding this information to the article without such recklessness. I've looked over Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Guide but there's nothing about how many members, I had to look on the proposals page number (which is annoying as it should be in the guide page, don't you think?). We'd need support votes of "6–12 active Wikipedians" on the proposals page (yep, we gotta go through the long waiting at the proposals page again) before we can start it.
