January 2020[edit]

I'm not going to leave you a formal warning here, but you are barking up the wrong tree. V is policy. BLP is policy RS is a guideline subsidiary to policy. I have no idea of why you are doing accusing me of bad faith, but your accusations are out of line. I came upon this article a few days ago, and found a promotional Facebook style page, which i quite properly stubbed (I've stubbed hundreds of similar articles.) I've got near 100,000 edits, most to school articles and my work has been recognized by dozens of editors, including being named Editor of the Week primarily for my work on school articles. If you wish to discuss this dispassionately, start a thread on the article talk page. But please read WP:BURDEN, and you cannot form a consensus in violation of policy. John from Idegon (talk) 05:53, 5 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

John, I apologize if I offended you. I was troubled by the fact that you deleted almost the entire article without discussing it with anyone else working on it. That was why I reinstated it, and also why I added references to source the entries better (I agree about the yearbook reference; it wasn't the best choice). Please note that the history section is documented in places such as University of Chicago Press, University of California Press, Berkeley School of Journalism, the California Department of Education, and similar. The article is well documented because Kennedy High was something of an experiment and so inspired some research. I've added references to show that. I had already posted in the talk page for the article, and no one responded, so I went ahead and redid on the article. I didn't see your comment here until just now, so that is why I didn't respond here before.
I would request that rather than deleting almost the entire article, you and I discuss the article on its talk page. I have already opened a discussion there. If you don't like something, talk it over with me and I'll see if we can find a better way to put it.
I appreciate that you are an experienced editor: I looked at your page and was impressed. I am also an experienced writer and editor, with over 25 books from New York publishers, a former editor of a science fact and fiction magazine and also several anthologies from major publishers, and also an author of various science articles. I'm in my sixties now and retired, so I have more time to spend on articles that I had wanted to work on but didn't have time before.
I didn't write the original Kennedy article, but I had started doing a bit of work on it when I had time over the past few years, with the intent of improving the sources cited and also to rewrite the article to give it a more objective tone. The problems at the school discussed in the article are valid and documented, but the tone wasn't encyclopedic in some places. To respond to your comments, I removed some of those sentences until they can be better sourced and phrased. The article still needs work; I would like to put the references in the history section in line with what they refer to, and also polish the prose and make it fit more with an encyclopedia. It may take me a while, though, since I'm also working on other projects.
If you are willing to discuss the article, I would appreciate your input on making improvements.
Again, I apologize if I offended you. JacDT (talk) 06:14, 5 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

apparent COI[edit]

I noticed on the talk page of the JFK High School article you noted you are one of its notable alumni-- that is a WP:COI that you need to declare. I have also mentioned it on the Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Schools‎ talk page. Please read the policy and declare your COI here. Grand'mere Eugene (talk) 01:08, 12 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. I did declare it on the talk page there. I will also put it here, as soon as I look at your reference. Thanks. JacDT (talk) 01:19, 12 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Done! I used the template you pointed me to on your page. Thank you for letting me use that; I've been wondering how I should write my editor's page and having been searching Wikipedia for guidelines. JacDT (talk) 02:10, 12 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Sources for draft Judy Tyrus and Randy Oda articles[edit]

Good newss: I've found reliable sources for both these bios that mentionn they're alumni of JFK High, but the Oda sources so far do nt provide substantial coverage, only passing mentions. I did add what I found to the Oda draft, but so far it's not enough sourcing for a bio on Wikipedia. I also changed the url on the NYT article about Judy Tyrus-- I remembered that there's an option for subscribers to share an article, which now apparently points to an archived version rather than the one behind the paywall. Still, the text is available. Then I did another NYT serch on Tyrus and turned up 40+ articles, some of which appear substantial enough to use. There are also several hundred hits on the newspapers.com search of her name which I haven't begun to screen. So when you have time, there will be some potential sources available. I'll keep looking for more on each subject. Cheers! — Grand'mere Eugene (talk) 07:05, 13 January 2020 (UTC)₧[reply]

Thank you! That is amazing work. Much appreciated. JacDT (talk) 14:12, 13 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
You're welcome. Today I found a few more Tyrus sources, and added qutoes from most of them within the citations because it's easier to synthesie/summarize/paraphrase with the source material in one place. Most of the quotes should be removed once you construct the article's text. Once you finish, ping me and I'll help prepare the draft for main article space. Stephen has proposed some categories (one requirement), and we will need to "de-orphan" the article, creating some incoming links from other WP pages, which means either adding wikilinks to relevant pages that may mention her, or adding her name to articles like List of New York City Ballet dancers. Cheers! — Grand'mere Eugene (talk) 01:03, 14 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The references you found are really going to help. And that's a good idea, leaving the quotes there like that to help synthesize etc. I think we're about finished with the school article. I finished the renewal section and Steven did some good clean up and reformatting. Tomorrow I will do a copy-edit/tightening/grammar/ proof of the text (using Chicago Manual of Style) and put the demographics back in using NCES. Once that is done, I have some other deadlines to meet outside of Wikipedia (that's what pays the bills; as a matter of principle, I would never take pay for work associated with Wikipedia. Working here is my way of donating to what I consider one of the most valuable resources online). When I finish those, I will get back to the Tyrus page. Thanks again! You're a goddess to do all this. Best -- Cat JacDT (talk) 04:16, 14 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Good work Grand'mere Eugene and there's definitely potential for Judy Tyrus. Regarding the incoming links, I did come across her colleague Melanie Person that mentions her name. Question for you and JacDT, is she African-American? I'll reply on school talk page later, been quite busy so not had much Wiki time, some things to be addressed in the school article but good work JacDT Steven (Editor) (talk) 06:52, 15 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Steven (Editor). Much appreciated. Judy Tyrus appears on the web site "Curating Memoirs of Blacks in Ballet" (https://mobballet.org/index.php/2018/08/23/judy-tyrus/). I don't know her ethnicity beyond that, whether she is African-American or another black heritage. Does it make a difference? JacDT (talk) 15:01, 15 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Welcome and I see, hmm, I just wanted to know as there is an African-American ballet dancers subcategory, will add her to the American ballerinas category. Sorry I haven't replied on the talk page yet, things have been hectic, Steven (Editor) (talk) 03:02, 17 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
No problem about the time! I appreciate any responses you can give whenever it is convenient for you. The current president of SFWA is interested in having me make more inquiries about the project I described in my question there under the "request edit" heading, so eventually I'd like to find where the right place is on Wiki to continue the discussion. But there's no hurry.
I did find a list of African-American ballerinas as a page. It should say Black, but in America sometimes African-American is used interchangeably with Black. They aren't the same; the term Black includes other nationalities besides those originating in Africa. But looking at that page, it does look like it would be appropriate to add Tyrus once her page is finished. The page for African-American ballerinas needs to be redone, though; the wording is dated at best and doesn't present as neutral. Perhaps I can work on that at the same time I work on the Tyrus page. If you'd like to take a look, it's here: List_of_African-American_ballerinas JacDT (talk) 04:03, 17 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Steven (Editor), I think this is the category you're looking for: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:African-American_ballet_dancers. I'd suggest putting her under both American Ballerinas and African-American ballerinas. JacDT (talk) 04:14, 17 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hi JacDT, sorry for the delay, regarding the list page for African-American ballerinas, I came across that one too, if you are interested in working on it please do, entirely up to you and I would first start a discussion on the talk page to raise the concern and see if any other interested editors reply. Also that article has had multiple issues tags since December 2014, oh dear haha. Yep that's the category I came across, but there will need to be a source to say she is African-American in order to add her to the list and category — I tried to see if I could find a source but not had any luck, I've already added the American ballerinas category as her place of birth is sourced, also categories can always be changed or added in future so all is good. I will get to you on the school article, but you can edit the article and work on the other sections as described in the school article guidelines if you're still interested to work on it more, Steven (Editor) (talk) 16:02, 18 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Steven (Editor), that all sounds good. I do plan to do some more work on the school article when I get a chance, per some excellent comments by Ottoump (right now, I have to finish the some copyedits I just got for my next book). If you have a chance to recommend a place where I could go to ask about the project I mention under the "Request Edit Function at WP" at the end of the talk page for the school, that would be much appreciated. I talked to the current president of SFWA, and she says they would b interested in setting up such a collaboration with Wikipedia if the interest exists here. I just don't know where to go to make the proposal. Thanks for any suggestions you can give. JacDT (talk) 04:19, 19 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Manual of Style[edit]

Hi again, JacDT. I noticed you are using the Chicago Manual of Style, normally a good choice, but on WP, we have WP:MOS that sometimes differs markedly from the CMS. The location of punctuation relative to quotation marks is one such instance, reflecting a negotiated compromise that is mystifyingly referred to as "logical quotes." The issue leading to this formatting: British editors and most other English-speaking editors, unlike American editors, usually place commas and periods outside quotation marks! (I know, it just looks wrong to those of us who have been taght otherwise!) Anyhow, here's another tip: we have a cabal of wikignomes who (upon request) will copyedit an article once it is relatively stable. See Wikipedia:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors/Requests. Et voilà, copyediting is manageable. Cheers! — Grand'mere Eugene (talk) 21:38, 14 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, Grand'mere Eugene. I will revert the punctuation change. JacDT (talk) 22:37, 14 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Done! But wow, that is painful to put the commas outside the quotation marks. JacDT (talk) 22:42, 14 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Disambiguation link notification for January 15[edit]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited John F. Kennedy High School (Richmond, California), you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Chevron (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)
