February 2012[edit]

Please do not use Wikipedia to promote businesses. Wikipedia is not the "Yellow Pages". If you want to list a company for potential customers to find, please consider alternative outlets, such as Wikia's Yellowikis. Thank you. You have stated that you are the web designer for "Magic Carpet lifts", and so have a conflict of interest in editing articles relating to their business Escape Orbit (Talk) 00:02, 2 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

My updates were to correctly site Magic Carpet® as a registered trademark name in regards to conveyor lifts. The images that were shown were incorrectly using the registered trademark name. Please help me understand how to update this information in such a way that it correctly reflects the registered trademark and abides by Wikipedia's rules. Thanks
Please read the Five Pillars and the pages linked there. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a trade journal, trademark registry, or anything similar.
Just like Xerox, Magic carpet has been adopted by the industry as a generic term. —EncMstr (talk) 00:19, 2 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia reflects what is out there, it doesn't decide for itself. So if the term "Magic Carpet" is used generically for a type of ski lift, then that is what Wikipedia will report. It is also a general rule in the Wikipedia manual of style that we do not use trademark symbols in articles.--Escape Orbit (Talk) 01:05, 2 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome to Wikipedia. Everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia. However, the username you have chosen (JKellyCo) seems to imply that you are editing on behalf of a group, company or website.

There are two issues with this:

  1. It is possible that you have a conflict of interest. In keeping with Wikipedia's neutral point of view policy, you must exercise great caution when editing on topics related to your organization or adding links to its website.
  2. Your account cannot represent a group of people. You may wish to create a new account with a username that represents only you. Alternatively, you may consider changing your username to avoid giving the impression that your personal account is being used for promotional purposes.

Regardless of whether you change your name or create a new account, you are not exempted from the guidelines concerning editing where you have a conflict of interest. For information on how to contribute to Wikipedia when you have a conflict of interest, please see our frequently asked questions for organizations. Thank you.
