Welcome back, maybe?

Missed ya. Hope things are okey-dokey. Have a good weekend. :) -Ebyabe (talk) 23:11, 4 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Glad to see you back for a bit. Cheers! Wassupwestcoast (talk) 18:26, 8 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome back

Hi Ivo, glad to see you back in whatever role you are comfortable with. If you are still interested in the Black Haw map, see Timeline of Jane Austen for a map I did recently. I still like the red X icons for the battles, but wonder if black dots for cities, red dots for forts, and green dots for Native villages might not work better than the icons. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 15:52, 14 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

PS I am an admin now (you leave and look how the standards have fallen), so if you want any of your old pages undeleted, I can help with that too. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 15:54, 14 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It is undeleted in its entirety - you may have to WP:BYC to see it (or just keep clicking refresh). If you would rather have a selected version, that is possible too, though more work. Welcome back! By the way, I think you might like what has been done with Peer Review (and we can always use more reviewers) Ruhrfisch ><>°° 04:15, 15 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Welcome back here too. Blnguyen (bananabucket) 04:21, 15 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I will do it tomorrow - off to bed in a bit. I will have to delete it and then selectively resore parts of it. Do you just want the most recent version or just to omit bad edit summaries? Ruhrfisch ><>°° 05:10, 15 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I deleted two edits based on their summaries. I did not look at any content changes. I there is something you really want deleted, let me know (send a diff by email) and I will take that out too. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 13:34, 15 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

From me, too

Just wanted to add to what I said at DYK that it was a pleasure removing your name from WP:MW and I hope that things go much better this time. NRHP really benefited from your active involvement with the project. Daniel Case (talk) 17:28, 5 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You had a watchlist that big? I'm not mentioning any names, but IMO based on some RfCs I'm familiar with four-figure watchlists are a major recipe for problems (I only have 125+ or so, and some of them are rarely, if ever, edited by anyone). Chopping it down to manageable size is going to be the best thing you've done for yourself.

There will be more NY stuff soon, now that I'm done with a lot of the RI photo uploads. I'm coming around to responding to a lot of overdue correspondence in the meantime. Daniel Case (talk) 20:28, 5 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Banditti of the Prairie

Well, a friend and me might be going to see that boulder where the Banditti of the Prairie were hung. He happened to run into the guy at a bar one night, and asked for permission to go out there. We have to just check in with him, and then we can. So we are going to attempt to get some great pictures for you. I would also like to make our way out to that Donut Barn sometime soon, but I will need your help on that one.--Kranar drogin (talk) 10:59, 15 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

One thing I just noticed was on the Round barn article, there is no section on the Donut Barns? I really don't know enough about them to say a small section needs to be added or not, but I would bring it up to you. Gotta run. --Kranar drogin (talk) 11:03, 15 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Copy edit for Ozzie Smith welcome

Thank you for your initial comments on Ozzie Smith's peer review page. I would very much welcome a thorough copyedit. By the way, I'm a big Ghostbusters fan too, so I think your Wikipedia user name is cool! Cheers, Monowi (talk) 19:32, 15 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Just a thanks

Thank you! That's the first barnstar I've received. I create stubs like these all the time; check out the Nicrophorini, Acanthomorpha, Alepisauriformes, Aspidorhynchiformes, Anotopteridae pages and their daughter articles...I wrote stubs for all of those taxons and most of their listed daughter articles. Unfortunately, I don't always have time or information to give each article more than a sentence or two-- you're looking at one of my best, and I wish I could make them all this long! However, information on many of these is very hard to come by, so I am forced to leave many articles with nothing more than a taxobox and a sentence.

I'll see what I can do about your weevil. I'll put that at the top of my to-do-list for next time I'm online (no time at the moment).

Have a very blessed day, Bob the Wikipedian, the Tree of Life WikiDragon (talk) 12:43, 16 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Have a look. It still needs someone who is good at writing to do more research and write a full-length article. I have included reference links in case someone comes along. I specialize in creating stubs, not full-length articles. Thanks again for the barnstar, and have a nice day!

Thanks for the Peer Review on Ozzie Smith

Just wanted to drop you a quick note and say how much I appreciate your peer review on Ozzie's article. I've only had the chance to glance over the comments, but I'm very impressed by your in-depth analysis. Excellent, excellent work for sure. I'll go through each comment over the next couple of days, and post replies to any specific issues on Ozzie's peer review page. Welcome back to Wikipedia, and thanks again! Copyedit request

I see you're on the list of copyeditors. Would you have time to look at Aeneas Mackintosh? It's a fairly tidy article, but needs a new eye to spot elusive errors and refresh its prose. I'd be very grateful. Brianboulton (talk) 18:52, 18 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

A Day in the Life CE

Would you mind doing a copyedit for A Day in the Life? I think it would really benefit the article, having already had a peer review. It's nominated for GA, and I think a good copy-edit is all it needs. Thanks. Also, if you're not going to do it, please at least inform me. I've been waiting for weeks for some of the PR Volunteers I've asked previously. :) Cheers, Kodster (Willis) (Look what I can do) 19:03, 20 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the CE. I did most of the things you asked (besides the referencing), and I'd like to know if everything I did was okay. Basically, could you just look over my changes and see if they're good? I plan to make this an FA soon, though how soon I'm not sure. Anyway, thanks again for the PR, it really helped. I probably will have to get one more PR before I can put this up for FA. Thanks. Cheers, Kodster (Willis) (Look what I can do) 21:27, 28 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Pine Bluff McDonalds Sign

Historic c.1962 McDonald's sign in Pine Bluff, Arkansas

Hmm. It's a bit under an hour outside of Little Rock, and I totaled my car last year . . . but, it sounds like it could be a nice little road trip getaway (not that I consider Pine Bluff to be exactly . . . scenic) for a friend and myself. I could try and talk my way into getting down there and I'd be glad to photograph it if this is possible :) I'm all for anything local (to me) on WP. If you'd just give me a google maps link to the address of the McDonalds, I can see if I can't make this happen for us! Broooooooce (talk) 16:02, 21 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I took the road trip and got a pic or two for you! Since it's an hour or so outside of LR and I wasn't exactly bookin' a hotel for the evening, I couldn't get one during the day and night, so I got you one at dusk! Best of both worlds :) I'll put it on here when I get home in an hour or so. Broooooooce (talk) 01:26, 22 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ta Da! One picture as promised. I also have a few other shots, but I feel this one came out the best. A bit of trivia for you--up until about 10 years ago, we had a sign just like it on University Avenue here in Little Rock. Broooooooce (talk) 03:30, 22 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
To my knowledge, the other sign was just scrapped, although it might be worth looking into! I noticed someone commented above that you were on a list of copy editors? I come from a technical writing background and am looking to contribute more around here. Do you have any suggestions? I'm really quite new to being an editor on WP. Broooooooce (talk) 13:12, 22 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the tips. I also enjoy helping expand local coverage and I'm probably going to sign on with Project:Arkansas. My most recent article, Capitol View/Stifft's Station, is the first I've created with this intent in mind. Anyways, let me know when you create the Sign article so I can check it out! Broooooooce (talk) 13:31, 22 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for my very first barnstar! I gratefully accept it on behalf of my friend Gracie (visible in the picture thanks to my lack of attention) who decided to drive down to Pine Bluff with me just for the fun of it. Broooooooce (talk) 14:37, 22 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Mackintosh copyedit

Thanks for getting back to me. Someone else has done an unsolicited copyedit on the Aeneas Mackintosh article, so don't worry about the delay. I'd still value your opinion on the article when you do get a chance to look at it - it'll be on peer review for a while yet.Brianboulton (talk) 19:16, 22 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

RE: Frank Lloyd Wright

Yeah it was really beautiful. Wright is just incredible. I have also more pictures (for example Robie House) which I did't put on the net (yet). I see that you are also making documentations of some houses... Do you have some kind of system or some target in it?  LYKANTROP  12:32, 23 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Heh, it seems we have one pretty similar hobby. But I still can't implement it as I would like to. I am planning to make such a journeyes in Europe (where I am) in near future...for example Le Corbusier, Mies van der Rohe from the modern architecture. But also medieval and ancient castles and fortresses (which are in US actually not :) ). In Wisconsin I was to Johnson Wax Headquarters, but it was closed for the public. There are tours once a week (I think on friday, but I am not sure). So I took some photos of the exterior, but it was raining... It would be really good job to make some nice pictures of the building and its interior...  LYKANTROP  17:53, 24 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
This is really funny, cause about 20km from where I live is the Villa Tugendhat. I've also seen the skyscrapers by Mies in Chicago. It was a pretty crazy travel - from Chicago with hired car to some Wisconsin places and then to Pennsylvania - Fallingwater, but not Kentuck Knob :( - and then NY. And some places on the way of course. I really will go to US for some longer time to see all the incredible buildings...places...nature... I also really recommend to visit Europe. But I still can't really imagine how it is to live in US, cause it is really very different to Europe. I hope I'll check it out for some time...  LYKANTROP  21:04, 25 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure. In my readings on the history of Davenport, Iowa, it mentions both LeClaire, and Blackhawk several times being together. While I can't confirm or deny that he translated it, it wouldn't at all surprise me if he did. Did you read somewhere that a LeClaire translated the autobiography, and you're not sure if it is Antoine? Ctjf83Talk 17:06, 23 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Map

Hi Ivo, let me say again that I am glad to see you back here. Thanks too for your work at Peer Review. Here's the tentative list of settlements and Native villages I had - the dots could be wikilinked just like the parks map dots are. There are 21 settlements and forts, though only 18 seem unique (Blue Mounds and Kellogg's Grove are also battles, Fort Crawford seems to be the same as Prairie du Chien village) plus 11 Native American villages, plus the 15 battles, skirmishes and massacres which are already on the map. I am honestly not sure what happens if a dot and a label overlap, so my thought would be to keep the forts etc to the bare minimum. I also note that only 3 native villages have articles (Fox is a link to the animals) and only 11 forts have articles (not counting Kelloggs Grove, already a battle). One village (Saukenuk) and one fort (Dearborn) are already on the map, so that would be 9 more dots if we just went with what already has articles.

I don't want the map to be so busy as to be illegible, so I think we should keep all the battles and only add major forts and villages. What do you think? Ruhrfisch ><>°° 14:25, 24 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Map of Black Hawk War sites
Battle (with name) Fort / settlement Native village
Symbols are wikilinked to article
  • Major white settlements and forts. - Blue dot
  • Major Native American settlements and forts/camps.

Hi Ivo, any ideas on what to do on the map? Tell me what to put on it and I will do my best to try and get it all on. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 22:01, 29 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I added all of the forts / settlements and native villages that I could to the map and marked tem above. What do you think? Should we add a key in the lower right corner? Is the map ready to add to the Battle articles? Ruhrfisch ><>°° 21:00, 29 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I checked the {{Black Hawk War (1832)}} template and I added Fort Defiance (Wisconsin) and Wiota, Wisconsin (which is Hamilton's Diggings). Still need to make stubs for and add Fort Hamilton, Wisconsin, Fort Jackson, Wisconsin Fort Union, Wisconsin, and Gratiot's Grove. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 01:06, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I really like that, and the key down below is great.--Kranar drogin (talk) 00:58, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks - is it OK to add to the battle articles? Ruhrfisch ><>°° 01:06, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I would say so, yeah, add them.--Kranar drogin (talk) 01:22, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
OK, will do. Should there be labels for Illinois, Wisconsin and Iowa - they could be linked too? Ruhrfisch ><>°° 01:29, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think its needed, but if they look good, I would add them.--Kranar drogin (talk) 01:33, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • They are all in the battle articles - one problem with the labels is what should I label Wisconsin? Probably Michigan Territory with (Wisconsin) in parentheses below. Then what to call Iowa - it was unorganized territory at the time. Probably just (Iowa)? If the labels are not needed, then I will leave them off Ruhrfisch ><>°° 02:33, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I would use them, but the name I have seen the most is "Iowa Region" or "Iowa Territory". These might just be names that were put in place is all too.--Kranar drogin (talk) 03:20, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, upon further study, the Iowa area just needs to be named "Unorganized territory" and have (Iowa) like that.--Kranar drogin (talk) 04:11, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
OK, thanks. Not sure I will get to it tonight Ruhrfisch ><>°° 04:19, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I added the state labels - let me know how they look. I can take them back out if needed. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 04:40, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Looks good Ruhr, nice work. Not sure the state labels need wikilinks though, what were your thoughts on that? Also, I do know that Fort Hamilton was at Hamilton's Diggings, not sure we will have enough information to do an article, might work better in the history section of Wiota, have to see what sources I can come up with. IvoShandor (talk) 12:20, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks - I mostly linked it for Michigan Territory on Wisconsin, but will unlink those if that is the consensus. Wiota is already on the map for the Diggings. That only leaves three forts / settlements and four native villages max. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 13:39, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I delinked the states - if there are changes (new articles to link to instead of the town, etc) please let me know. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 20:34, 1 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi IvoShandor, I see your are listed as a volunteer for Peer Review For Copy Editing and need your expertise. This is a request for additional peer-review of article Anekantavada. This article had been peer-reviewed by Ruhrfisch (talk · contribs) who suggested that some copyediting is required. Besides peer review I would also appreciate active improvements on this article (like copy editing, tagging for citations/ NPOV, wikifying links etcs and other stylistic concerns) That is, if you have time. The problem is not a single article relating Jainism is a featured or A-class article and all the articles are in a pathetic state. Hence I would doubly appreciate your efforts. --Anish (talk) 07:36, 8 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

And would you be interested in setting up some stuff to work into it? Nothing pressing...".

I haven't had any experience, positive or negative, participating on any wikipedia task force mobiliized to do anything. It feels like WP:NRHP currently has a good quorum to discuss and handle a broad range of things; i don't like the idea of splitting that if it would hurt it. But, on the other hand, if a task force would somehow involve or energize a new group of people somehow then that would be great.

Thinking about it, I wonder if an NHL-specific task force would have been useful, but perhaps is not now needed as much. I don't know what you have watched, but I have felt free to pose NHL-related proposals in NRHP (a proposal about Stub/Start/B-class ratings for NHL articles, which mostly got shot down), and to develop the NHL article-development status table on main page of WP:NRHP. And there has been useful discussion of special needs for NHL sites in terms of NRHP infobox, and so on. There are only about 200 NHL articles yet to create (out of about 2440) by the way.

I wonder more about what would serve to help articles get developed further, and to get to GA and FA rating. The whole wp:NRHP is relatively unproductive on that end. Certainly the NHL articles are good candidates to work on, as they are arguably relatively important and the NRHP docs are routinely available for them.

Another priority, a possible task force, would be to focus on all of the higher NRHP designations: the NRHPs that are also NMONs, NMEMs, NHSs, etc. (i think about half of the 391 areas listed in List of areas in the United States National Park System). Articles for all of these were created, mostly by WP:PAREAS, but they need to be cleaned up and Protected areas mentions and Protected areas infoboxes should be removed from many of them that do not meet environmental protected areas definitions. This need seems to be accepted over at WP:PAREAS now, but there is no momentum, no one joining up to work on the task. It is isn't a fun task, over there, to correct previous work done. The task needs to be adopted over at WP:NRHP as a positive task of developing our most salient NRHPs. Perhaps a combined task force to develop our most salient NRHPs, including the NPS areas and the NHLs? Perhaps a collaboration on bringing one article at a time up to GA or FA? Just thinking out loud.... doncram (talk) 20:32, 14 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hey guy. I think I am going to go to Midway Village on Saturday with some of my family. Are there specific pictures there that you need for anything? Otherwise, I will try and take pictures of everything. Let me know.--Kranar drogin (talk) 02:06, 16 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well, we have put it off for now, so another time. Anyways, I think that Scott County in Minn is great! I think that should be implemented, and maybe we can either put something together, or beg one of the map guys to see if they could put something together for a map?--Kranar drogin (talk) 01:42, 17 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Are you going to work on doing that table, or do you want me to so you can focus on articles? I can prolly figure out the table, but that is if you want me too. I think this might be something we should do for all the counties that have a lot of registered historic places. That will also make the master list page a lot easier to open.--Kranar drogin (talk) 04:54, 18 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I wanted to let you know, that I contacted a photographer by the name of Dori awhile back, who took a pictures of most of the historic places in Champaign-Urbana, if you feel like writing articles for those. The pictures can be found on the Wiki Commons. I just wanted to let you know about that also. I am going to see if there are some pictures of the ones that currently have articles.--Kranar drogin (talk) 05:04, 18 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Black Hawk War

I am just plain amazed, looking at various articles in the Black Hawk War project, at how effective you and your collaborators have been at what the young Mr. Lincoln might have called "woolin' and pullin'" disparate data into a common format. An outsider like myself can see better, perhaps, how successful the project has been at getting individual battle, such as the Battle of Bad Axe, into chapters of the overall narrative. Bigturtle (talk) 02:15, 20 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

A decently decent response

Sounds great, I am actually hunting up sources for stuff around me already. I'd love to have your help on some of the more difficult topics. I actually just created (yesterday) an article for a place on the register (the register stays on my watchlist and gives me ideas); Lamar Porter Field. I plan to work on Arkansas School for the Deaf, Arkansas School for the Blind, Central High School Historic District, and any other little local notables that don't yet have articles; at least as much as time allows me to go out and take pictures of them. I was just thinking of setting the goal of DYK for a couple of them. Do you have any ideas? If we make a habit of this, you might consider joining Wikiproject:Arkansas, although I don't think people are being very active with it--I'm trying to be. Broooooooce (talk) 14:01, 20 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Terrific. I already did the Capitol View/Stifft's Station article, which contains two historic districts and is just north of the neighborhood I am in, which is Capitol Hill, Little Rock, Arkansas (right between CV/SS and the Central High District. I've already gathered some sources for the article as it is high on my to-do list:
Also, with regard to other historic sites in Arkansas, I find that the gentleman that keeps up the following link has a surprisingly vast wealth of sourced information (much of his text was used to create the Dogpatch USA article.
Also extremely useful:
I plan to go photograph the deaf and blind school in the next day or two and talk to some people about getting additional sources for those articles. I also want to get information on Woodruff Elementary here in Little Rock. I started with the CV/SS article and decided that notable red links from that page should be eliminated by me and that I'd slowly just work my way out from my house doing national historic sites and other noteworthy locations in my home city and state. Let me know what you think. Broooooooce (talk) 14:23, 20 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I also have the number and name of the Neighborhood Association President, one thing I should note is that I planed to approach the CHSHD article as a section (albeit probably the largest part) of the Central High Neighborhood article, which I plan to add to the Little Rock Neighborhoods template because right now it is not included. It will be similar to the way CV/SS was done. If you wanna chat at me, you should hit me up on AIM, my un is broooooooce, same as on here. Broooooooce (talk) 14:28, 20 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I just edited the last comment a bit, the laundry finished and I got sidetracked and what I said didn't even make sense! As for the combination of the neighborhood and district: as the article grows it can be separated with a "main article:" thing in the neighborhood page. My problem as of right now is gathering information on the neighborhood that is independent of the district. I will probably work on the deaf/blind schools first, plus I'll have to get around the neighborhood and shoot pictures of notable structures; that will take some time. Well, guess I won't get an answer on the lists. I can't believe a self-proclaimed confederate irritated you enough to drive you away with his POV. You shouldn't stress yourself out over the ignorant.--Kranar drogin (talk) 10:59, 23 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'll just take another extended break, in the meantime I will still ul photos to Commons, it's not so much him (I expected the response he gave to hide behind policy like true agenda driven editors always do around here) as it is the fact that no one else seemed to notice or care, that doesn't spell good things for the project. This editor made no qualms about his POV, has publicized his new articles at the NRHP project, and no one cares. That bothers me. If we can't get some piddly-shite little article about a war monument in Kentucky right, then what can we get right and why should anyone give this website the time of day? --IvoShandor (talk) 12:08, 23 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
For what it's worth I did a Google search on the en.wikipedia.org domain and removed all uses of the offending phrase in articles that were not justified. If they reappear I will open an RfC. Try and not sweat it, Ivo. I'm kind of a closet fan of WP:FUCK. Sure, too many people here are retards who's "contributions" actually harm the encyclopedia. (I do not lump Bedford in with these people, he just got caught pushing a POV which is quite unsettling, but I feel the body of his contributions is at least significant and adds to the encyclopedia. I still wish rather than start ignoring the situation that he would have acknowledged things, but my ideal outcome and what usually happens are almost always different. RfC is the next step, but hopefully things will mellow out.) I understand that tons of people on here don't deserve the civility that so many patient people try and give them--in fact, they really need to be told to fuck off and have their ass beat for being such an oxygen debt to the planet. However, of course we can't be that way to them.
Also, I don't think of you as "blow-your-top-and-take-a-break Ivo" or whatever. I read your RfA and oh eff double-u, you lost your cool once. Whoopie, you were even the one that brought it to their attention! I don't share the impression you seem to feel is held by many other wikipedians, to the contrary, I find you to be welcoming and helpful, and uniquely so. I know I'm too new around here to try and impart wisdom and be right in doing so, but things like that, historically, have never stopped me, so here goes: Fuck it. Fix what you can, fuck what you can't. WP is filled with flaws (and I'm sure I will become exponentially more jaded as I spend more time here, but still), but it IS still the greatest repository of human knowledge on the planet and it benefits from people who are as personally invested as you've let yourself become--in that same breath, however, it is just a web page and it's really not worth letting it ruin your day. Broooooooce (talk) 16:56, 25 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hope you don't mind my attempt to straddle a fence or two: I commented at Bedford's talk page that i do value his contributions, as I do yours, and that i personally don't see a huge problem with usage of an informal name for the American Civil War sometimes. It does also seem to be unfair to have any really old stuff brought up and used against you, but I didn't observe that happening other than in Bedford's being defensive. I have not gone and looked up RFAs for anyone, and don't intend to. But also it seemed to me that the accumulation of comments on Bedford's page was amounting to an attack that would cause me to be a bit defensive, too. So I hope this is not such a big deal. Anyhow, I'd rather chat about other stuff. Do you have further thoughts about a task force? I am interested in talking more about doing one on the protected areas / NPS-administered areas and possibly NHLs, but didn't hear back from you. Cheers, doncram (talk) 08:57, 27 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I am still thinking about that task force. I have always valued Bedford's contributions, what I don't value is obvious POV under the guise of adhering to policy. Informality has no place in professional writing, which is what this project is supposed to resemble, which is why that City of Angels thing was shot down. It's even worse when informality pushes a particular agenda or point of view.IvoShandor (talk) 12:23, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Request for Peer Review help

Thank you for you work as a peer review volunteer. Since March, there has been a concerted effort to make sure all peer review requests get some response. Requests that have gone three days or longer without a substantial response are listed at Wikipedia:Peer review/backlog. I have three requests to help this continue.

1) If you are asked to do a peer review, please ask the person who made the request to also do a review, preferably of a request that has not yet had feedback. This is fairly simple, but helps. For example when I review requests on the backlog list, I close with Hope this helps. If my comments are useful, please consider peer reviewing an article, especially one at Wikipedia:Peer review/backlog (which is how I found this article). Yours, ...

2) While there are several people who help with the backlog, lately I have been doing up to 3 or 4 peer reviews a day and can not keep this up much longer. We need help. Since there are now well over 100 names on the PR volunteers page, if each volunteer reviewed just one PR request without a response from the list each month, it would easily take care of the "no response" backlog. To help spread out the load, I suggest those willing pick a day of the month and do a review that day (for example, my first edit was on the 8th, so I could pick the 8th). Please pick a peer review request with no responses yet, if possible off the backlog list. If you want, leave a note on my talk page as to which day you picked and I will remind you each month.

3) I have made some proposals to add some limits to peer review requests at Wikipedia_talk:Peer_review#Proposed_limits. The idea is to prevent any one user from overly burdening the process. These seem fairly reasonable (one PR request per editor per day, only four total PR requests per editor at a time, PR requests with cleanup banners can be delisted (like GAN quick fail), and wait two weeks to relist a PR request after it is archived), but have gotten no feedback in one week. If you have any thoughts on these, please weigh in.

Thanks again for your help and in advance for any assistance with the backlog. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 21:02, 27 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Round barns

Do you have any good books and/or other reference materials about round barns? I have a couple on the National Register in Minnesota that I should start articles on. I just went out today and got pictures of some places in Anoka County, Minnesota, including the Sparre Barn in the little hamlet of Nowthen (part of Burns Township), but I don't have anything more than a one-sentence description of the barn in a book with a list of all Minnesota's NRHP properties. I also need to do an article on the Dammon Round Barn south of Red Wing, Minnesota, though there's a little more research material on that. It's now part of a bed & breakfast, and the current owners offer it as a site for a wedding ceremony or reception. (Presumably, they haven't had animals on there in a while.)

If you have any research material that could help out, I could get a start on the article(s) and have you add stuff. (Actually, I should probably just go ahead and create stubs for some of the many properties I've photographed but haven't written about. I'm running behind, it seems.) --Elkman (Elkspeak) 05:10, 8 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Barnstar

Thank you! What a nice treat. I wish I'd been able to get to Liverpool to see her. By the way - I am trying to add two more images to the article but as I've not been registered long enough I can't do it - is there any chance you could help? A user (User:Jza84) kindly helped me put one photo up but I can't contact him/her again. I have found some more photos of her on Flickr that are acceptable for licensing, but can't upload them as I haven't been registered for 5 days. The images are of the spider on the move (more exciting than her crouched on the side of the building, and you can see just how massive she is) - any chance I could bother someone to upload them and add them to the page? I particularly like [2] because you get a sense of its scale and how it moves, and[3] because of the colours and you can see the puppeteers well. I think adding them to the articel would amke it more interesting again!! Thanks again for the barnstar, much appreciated. Roisterdoister (talk) 08:28, 8 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Oh bugger! What have I done??!! Thanks to everyone!!! Roisterdoister (talk) 08:33, 8 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Fantastic. I'll remove all my help notes and then add them to the article Thanks ever so much Ivo!! Roisterdoister (talk) 08:35, 8 September 2008 (UTC) Have you seen any of the videos of her moving, BTW?[reply]
Thanks for everything Ivo. I saw the spider on the telly and came to Wikipedia to read about it and couldn't believe there wasn't already an article on it. I missed the Sultan's Elephant in London in 2006 and now have missed La Princesse too. Rats! They'll probably stage it again somewhere else, as they took the elephant on tour. Roisterdoister (talk) 08:58, 8 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, okay, I'll try that with the cats thing. Not sure about splitting the article up as I think Im too close to it to see the wood for teh trees and I'm not sure how I'd split it anyway. Thanks anyhow Ivo. Roisterdoister (talk) 15:29, 9 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Ivo - could you have a look at the talk apage for La Princesse and see what you think of the discussion between User:125.239.235.106 and me about the use of the term 'genius'? I don't have the time or inclination to slug it out with him/her and I'm not familiar with all the rules. Thanks. Roisterdoister (talk) 10:58, 10 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Bad Axe

I will be glad to take a look at them though it may take several days - my experience is that FAC is becoming very rigorous (which is a good thing). The refs and images will each be checked there, so better to check them first. Peer review is also helpful ;-) Ruhrfisch ><>°° 11:26, 10 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Image checks are mostly licenses, if it is Fair Use is there a valid justification and does the fair use meet WP:NFCC. Refs are things like do the links work for web refs, are things formatted consistently (I have been chided about not using n-dashes properly in page number ranges in refs more than once) and most of all are the refs cited reliable sources. Not really fact checking per se, although sometimes you will even see that for internet refs (especially if there are problems elsewhere). Look at a current FAC or two, they all have someone doing an image check and a refs check. Take care, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 15:45, 10 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks

Hi IvoShandor...thanks for looking at Lincolnshire, Illinois for me. I'll do my best to work this article more thoroughly; the only thing is that the History section itself is a problem, but I think with enough diligence I'll be able to work my way around it.  :-)

Thanks again and cheers, --Starstriker7(Say hior see my works) 11:57, 11 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wise words, Ivo. I guess I just got a bit het up as the IP seemed to be shifting the goalposts in his/her objections, and then slapping me with a warning for using 'bloody' which is not even mildly offensive where I come from, and which wasn't even aimed at him/her, seemed the last straw. Looking at their contributions they don't seem to have anything better to do than comment on my edits, but there you go. I still maintain that it is justified to use the quote (though doubtless the IP would remove the 'mad, bad and dangerous to know' quote about Lord Byron as it is just one person's opinion, after all), but will try to get enough information to start a page on Monsieur F. D. and will put it there. Thanks for your input, and sorry to drag you in. If you can bear it, could I ask you cast your eye over Artichoke (creative company) for me to check for obvious faults? Cheers Roisterdoister (talk) 15:45, 11 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again. You're very kind. I've strayed off La Princesse for the moment as I wanted to know more about the oddly-named Larmer Tree Gardens that were the venue of one of the Artichoke productions - just about to stub it. Easily distracted, me! I'll give you a peep when I finish tinkering with the spider. Do you think I ought to put Artichoke up for a DYK? Not sure if it's good/relevant enough. Cheers Ivo Roisterdoister (talk) 09:32, 12 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, did you? I didn't notice an edit conflict thingy. But never mind - I can't even think what my edit was so it can't have been important! I've been running like a mad thing between Monsieur F. D. and some magical pleasure gardens on the Wiltshire/Dorset border so much that I have no idea what I'm doing right now! Must stop ... Your changes are great. I took the contentious bit out and put it in his article. I was going to argue it out on the talk page with the IP, but in the end I couldn't be bothered. I rather resented his/her implication that I'm precious about people editing my articles, as I have been collaborating happily with others. Never mind. You live and learn. Notability of Northern Illinois University shooting

Hi, I am currently engaged in a heated editing dispute in the article 2008, which lists notable events that took place in the year 2008. Knowing that you have been a significant contributor to the article Northern Illinois University shooting, perhaps you could provide an alternate opinion. Even though it wasn't the first or deadliest school shooting, I still believe it was a very notable event that affected the nation and world in many ways in the year 2008 (gun politics, higher education, mental health, journalism ethics, video game politics, emergency preparedness, etc.). I even backed it up with three international sources (from Australia and the U.K.), which I felt demonstrated the event's global importance. Unfortunately, people disagreed with that. Mind you, the event had been listed in that article all year, and only did it become a problem when I tried to add an image on the article recently. I stopped trying to put the image on there, but then they outright deleted the text entry about the event, which I thought was very uncalled for, and utterly ridiculous, considering it was perhaps one of the biggest media events of the year. Perhaps you could help revert this senseless deletion of a notable entry and provide some input on the talk page. Thanks for your help! Abog (talk) 22:52, 13 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Roxbury-

It was in the Bad Axe massacre article- I changed the wording from the township of Roxbury to the town of Roxbury- town are the definition use in Wisconsin not township as in Michigan, Illinois, etc. Looking at the history of the Bad Axe massacre, there was no change in the outcome. I did google Roxbury, Wisconsin and came across an article a John T. Clark wrote about the town of Roxbury. The article was written in 1877. I hope this helps. Thank you-RFD (talk) 00:07, 14 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I should be able to add it, but need to do some other stuff tonight. There are some places on the map that are pretty crowded - I will ask if it would look too tight. Congrats on the latest GA! Ruhrfisch ><>°° 00:53, 14 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I did a peer review of Bad Axe on its talk page, added the town to the map, switched the map symbol color of the fort / village symbols to red (as the blue / green contrast was not great), and updated the key on all the articles. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 02:50, 15 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Peer review is kind of working again, so you might want to list it there (warning if no one else repsonds, I will paste in my comments from the talk page ;-) ). Glad the map looks OK, take care, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 20:17, 15 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Again...

Hello again, IvoShandor. I worked my brain over to find out ways to get more info on Lincolnshire, Illinois, and I think I fulfilled the things you suggested of me. Would you like to take another look at the article?

Thanks and cheers, --Starstriker7(Say hior see my works) 02:38, 15 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm humbly asking for your considered opinion with my peer review request for the Lakeside Apartments District, Oakland, California page. I've listed this article for peer review because, at present the City of Oakland's Planning Commission and City Council is revising zoning and height regulations for new land development (i.e. skyscrapers) in the neighborhood. Currently, much public attention is focused on this neighborhood in the Hearing Rooms at City Hall down the street, around in the conference tables of local investment banks, and kitchen tables of local activists. Having spent many hours editing it, I'd hope this article reflects a modicum of accuracy and good encyclopedic writing.Critical Chris (talk) 20:25, 15 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Historic districts outside the United States

In Canada there isn't a separate legal category of historic districts, and least not at the national level. Some neighbourhoods are included among the National Historic Sites of Canada. However, the word "district" is infrequently applied and carries no particular protection against rezoning or redevelopment, including demolition. The "dirty work" of preserving and defending historic buildings and districts in Canada is left to the provinces and municipalities. Perhaps we need an article explaining that?

In the UK I do not believe they designate historic "districts" at all, but I am not sure. I think they only do it on a building-by-building basis. (But they have 500,000 protected buildings!!)

I hope that helps. --Kevlar (talkcontribs) 16:54, 14 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Busy guy

I see you're plenty busy. Would you have time for copyediting an article? Millennium '73 is in FAC, and a couple of editors have said they still think it needs more copyediting. I've fixed everything I can find. I think it's almost there, so it shouldn't take too much more work. Interested? ·:· Will Beback ·:· 05:00, 14 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

My first DYK, well hopefully

I just nominated an article I created, Methyldichloroarsine, for a DYK. I think it's pretty good, I was surprised I was able to dig up so much on it. Do you think you can eliminate the duplicate links in the reflist section though. Input would be welcome, thanks RockManQ (talk) 05:44, 15 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No problem, chemical warfare is an interesting topic to me, and it's quite fun filling out those red links. Oh, and yes working with a fellow Illinoisan has been great as well, hopefully we'll continue to have more collaborations in the future as well. RockManQ (talk) 16:05, 15 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Copy Edit Request

Hey, I saw you were a copy edit volunteer so I was wondering if I could ask you to copy edit the Stella Power Station article. It passed its GAR a couple of months ago and is now under peer review, with the hope of then going on to a FAC. One of the things picked up on in the peer review was the articles prose. I've done my best to copy edit it but it needs a more experienced hand's work, so I was hoping you could give it a going over. Fintan264 (talk) 15:45, 17 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

2008 Tennis Masters Cup Copyedit

Hello ! I am a tennis editor, trying to push the 2008 Tennis Masters Cup article, of which I am the main contributor, to FA-class. I have requested advice from Peer Reviewer Dabomb87, who said I should nominate the page for GA, and while doing that, have the article copyedited - he accepted to start the copyediting, but told me to try and find a second reader, to complete the work. That's why I contact you, to ask if you could take a look at the article. Dabomb87 has already made some edits, and has started a section for "Things needing clarification" on the article's talk page. --Oxford St. (talk) 19:21, 18 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Forget about it - I've seen you're already busy with other copyedits requests, the article is perhaps not in your field of current interests, and anyway I've just found out about the Guild of Copy Editors, so I'll ask for a CE there (Still, if you want to do it, leave me a message). Cheers ! --Oxford St. (talk) 20:32, 19 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello IvoShandor. Thanks for an interesting article; I just approved the hook over at DYK. If you have a chance, can you add a project to the article's Talk page? I think that's always a good thing for those articles that appear on the Main page so that folks who go to the article don't see the "red" on the Discussion link. November 2008

Why did you remove the section on the Little Big Town version from Life in a Northern Town? That version charted on five charts without even being released as a single and it's on two albums, that's hardly "trivial". It can quite easily be sourced. Also, please don't use profanity in edit summaries. Ten Pound Hammer and his otters • (Broken clamshellsOtter chirpsHELP) 17:43, 24 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It had no source. To put it simply, so source it if you want it to stay there instead of templating me and lecturing me. --IvoShandor (talk) 00:29, 25 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I see your point. However, please try to keep civil. I wasn't trying to lecture you, and it was hasty for me to template a regular — I just didn't see why you had to say "why the fuck is this here" for something unsourced. Ten Pound Hammer and his otters • (Broken clamshellsOtter chirpsHELP) 19:41, 25 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It's cool. Sometimes I have bad days myself and get a little angry in my edit summaries too. I've added sources to the article as well. Ten Pound Hammer and his otters • (Broken clamshellsOtter chirpsHELP) 19:47, 25 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

100,000k templates

I think I saw you chime in at WP:CITY. The debate has moved to WP:WPBIO. I think I just figured out what one problem is with my templates. I have proposed moving them from City X pages to Mayor of City X pages. I think this would make it more like the other templates that no one has a problem with. See discussion and comment. As far as your suggestion goes. There are several ideas people have. I mentioned the rise of our bicameral national legislature as an outgrowth of the debate about equal number vs. equal representation. This seems to be a similar debate. I mentioned I think cities could logically be grouped in three ways within a state: Population cutoff, top X, and county seats. All have advantages and disadvantages. I do not want to use any method in one state that I can not use in all others. Thus going with a top X would require a national source. I still think all three methods have their advantages and disadvantages. In some states the 10th largest municipality won't a place that is notable. However, debate should be centralized on project talk pages and not user talk pages so discuss at BIO if you would like.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTM) 14:24, 8 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Explanation

This June, Art created "unwritten rules", and since then people have been acting as if they are the official rules without any community consensus and acceptance. They have been used to attack various pages that have a lot of work. This is also done under a double standard. Such problems involve, from my experience, creating a page, putting about 20k worth of new information, then importing about 6k worth of information from another page in order to fill in a game in the background. This was criticized as not being a 5x expansion (but overrided). Another time involved my having expanded a page from 6k to 40k, but someone tried to attack it because I had block quotes from the author explaining key aspects of the text, and they thought that it didn't contain enough new information (but overrided). Recently, I had a similar problem with people saying that quoted information doesn't count as prose and this time it didn't get overrided. Why? Because over the past few weeks, many of the regulars who did override these dramatic changes in DYK were chased off or discouraged. Thats why this ruling needs to go into effect and stop this set of actions which is destroying DYK. I'm not the only one facing these problems and these new and dramatic reinterpretations of standards. Ottava Rima (talk) 22:00, 13 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Ivo, always glad to hear from you and I have been admiring your string of DYKs lately - congrats. I am doing well, if a little busy. Hope things are also going well for you. How is Kranar? I never see him around anymore (on my watchlist at least).

I think I mentioned this, but I saw a copy of the new-ish Black Hawk War book and thought it would be useful if you feel like working on those articles again. It had a LOT on the general background of the war, and the Bad Axe section was also quite detailed - much that could be added. I did not read the whole thing, but what I saw of some of the more minor engagments was pretty sparse (with more detail on Wiki). us bio weapon template?

i may have made a booboo, but not sure. i removed the template from stem rust and botulism, as neither article contains any discussion of their use as bio weapons. it seems to me - not an expert on the subject or the particulars of templating - that the template should be applied if the article discusses what the template refers to. otherwise, it seems arbitrary/confusing, since it leads the reader to a whole realm of articles that may or may not be relevant to the article. anyway, if i could get a better understanding of the rationale that'd be great.
