A tag has been placed on Gustaf Nordenskióld Travels in America requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for biographies. You may also wish to consider using a Wizard to help you create articles - see the Article Wizard.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. —Largo Plazo (talk) 20:36, 9 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Your userpage[edit]

It is a very unwise thing to put an e-mail address on a Wikipedia page, as by doing so you are offering that address to one of the most widely-travelled websites on the planet, which means that every address-harvesting spambot and webcrawler will be picking it up and adding it to their crop of validate e-mail addresses to spam. I am refraining from deleting it myself, since it is YOUR userpage, and we are meticulous about such things around here; but I would strongly advise that you remove that information immediately. --Orange Mike | Talk 14:43, 10 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Personal Information on your Userpage[edit]

Hi Irvdiamond. My name is Backslash Forwardslash. I am a Wikipedia administrator, and I noticed you have recently created a userpage. I don't intend to scare you away or attempt to intimidate you, but I thought you might want to reconsider some of the items on your userpage. You may have not realised that the items on your userpage release personal information about yourself (real name or age etc), which could be used against you in the future. While 99% of all the editors on Wikipedia are friendly, welcoming and harmless, there is a chance your personal information could be misused by editors not so 'high-minded'. A handful of editors have even felt real-world implications due to their Wikipedia edits and release of personal information.

Protecting your privacy, and remaining anonymous while on the internet — on any site — is a good idea. The internet is a worldwide and largely unregulated medium, and while Wikipedia is one of the safer sites, there are definite risks while online. With cyber-bullying and cyberstalking becoming increasingly commonplace, it is important that you take every precaution to remain safe.

I have deleted some revisions of your userpage in respect to your privacy for the time being, just in case you wish to reverse on your decision to have such content on public display. As a result, the information is only available to administrators. You are, of course, welcome to ask myself or another administrator to restore them, but I just wanted to make you aware of the risks involved with releasing personal information on such a public forum. If you wish to have the personal information removed so that even administrators cannot view it, I can request oversight on your behalf. You are also welcome to discuss this with me on my talk page, or privately via e-mail if you have any concerns. Again, I do not want to scare you. Wikipedia is a fantastic place with an incredibly supportive community. I'm just trying to ensure you are fully aware of the risks involved in editing, which are very similar to the risks you come across every day online. Hope to hear from you. \ Backslash Forwardslash / (talk) 21:07, 10 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

About copyright[edit]

Some material I wrote was published by the Mesa Verde Association. Nordenskiold's story can be advamced by including some of this material.

I have this email from them: Hello Irv:

It was a pleasure to speak with you earlier this afternoon. I was able to determine that the Mesa Verde Museum Association (MVMA) published The Letters of Gustaf Nordenskiold and the Proceedings of the Anasazi Symposium of 1991; both publications are now out of print. As the copyright holder, I am granting you permission to refer to and quote from both of these publications in any Wikipedia articles you author or edit.

Please note that MVMA reserves the right to charge a fee for permission to reprint copyrighted materials in some applications. Should you wish to quote from our publications in other media such as a printed book or printed article, please contact me for permission in that new application.

Best regards, Laurel Rematore, Executive Director Mesa Verde Museum Association —Preceding unsigned comment added by Irvdiamond (talkcontribs)

That is not a valid license for a Wikipedia article. All text except brief excerpts ("fair use") must be available under terms consistent with Wikipedia's Terms of Use before you submit it; in other words, released for free use under the CC-BY-SA 3.0 license and the GFDL, which the MVMA is apparently not willing to do. --Orange Mike | Talk 14:02, 12 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The article I wish to use is my oriiginal work. Based on goevernment sources. MVMA made no payment. If then I own the copyright no transfer of owernship was made by me.

I appreciate your reply.

How much is fair use, for example the article is 40 pages long. What I would like to use is the abstact which is one page. I may wish to modify this with some current thoughts. Irvdiamond (talk) 14:29, 12 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'm confused. If this is your work and you hold the copyright, then why were you asking MVMA for permission, and why did you reproduce their response here, if you think it's irrelevant?
I'm understanding that the situation is that they published works written by you. When you submitted your work for consideration, was there a provision that acceptance of your work for publication was contingent on your turning rights over to them? If so, then I imagine they have veto power now (and if they are not willing to make the material available for publication here under the terms two which Orangemike referred, then the permission they did give isn't sufficient). Otherwise, I imagine that they don't. (I am not a lawyer.)
Incidentally: if you do have sole rights and are willing to publish the material here subject to Wikipedia's terms, are you aware that other editors have the same right to edit it beyond recognition that they have throughout Wikipedia? —Largo Plazo (talk) 15:59, 12 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

More on copyright[edit]

I'm confused. If this is your work and you hold the copyright, then why were you asking MVMA for permission, and why did you reproduce their response here, if you think it's irrelevant? Yes, it is my work.

I asked them in ignorence after it was removed by one the readers.

I'm understanding that the situation is that they published works written by you. When you submitted your work for consideration, was there a provision that acceptance of your work for publication was contingent on your turning rights over to them?

I gave them no rights; they never asked me to do so.
If so, then I imagine they have veto power now (and if they are not willing to make the material available for publication here under the terms two which Orangemike referred, then the permission they did give isn't sufficient). Otherwise, I imagine that they don't. (I am not a lawyer.)
From what your response was and mine above they do not have veto power.

Incidentally: if you do have sole rights and are willing to publish the material here subject to Wikipedia's terms, are you aware that other editors have the same right to edit it beyond recognition that they have throughout Wikipedia? —Largo Plazo (talk) 15:59, 12 November 2009 (UTC)

Edit my words beyond recognition: I have no protection, right?
Right. WP:Ownership of articles.
What about a quote in whole or part of letters from the United States and Swedish governments?
If something is given as a quote, then if someone changes it, it should be reverted. Changing So-and-so said "XYZ" to So-and-so said "TUV" when the latter isn't true is vandalism just as changing true information to false information always is.
Just so you know, I have been working on this subject since 1972 and have tried use original material by real people and governments.

Signature[edit]

Hello. In case you didn't know, when you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion, you should sign your posts by typing four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment. You may also click on the signature button located above the edit window. This will automatically insert a signature with your username or IP address and the time you posted the comment. This information is useful because other editors will be able to tell who said what, and when. Thank you. --Orange Mike | Talk 18:43, 13 November 2009 (UTC) This is an example of multiple references to the same footnote.[1] Such references are particularly useful when citing sources where different statements come from the same source.[1] A concise way to make multiple references is to use empty ref tags, which have a slash at the end.[1][reply]

I need help on footnotes[edit]

Is there a tutorial on entering footnotes? I have looked. Irvdiamond (talk) 16:21, 21 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It's at WP:CITE. --Orange Mike | Talk 17:42, 23 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
