Advice on dealing with vandals

The best way to deal with vandals is not to indulge them, only revert and warn them on their talk pages. If you feel they should be blocked you can report them at WP:AIV. If they troll your talk page, revert and ignore. ... discospinster _talk 21:40, 26 September 2021 (UTC)

Oh they don't bother me when they post here just as long as it's not offensive. My talk page is an extension of the sandbox as far as I'm concerned. I find that leveling with these kids instead of acting like a dad to be a much more effective method in dealing with this sort of thing. Actually, you probably won't be blocked for that edit. The template warning I did above is sort of the "consequence" for that edit. If you really don't mean to do edits like that in the future, don't worry too much about it. But seeing your past edits, I would probably consider this the "final warning" before a block. Well, if you are talking about User:ALittleGassyl0801, then I will tell you the situation is completely different. If you look at their edit history, they started out vandalizing Wikipedia and then communicated with you on talk pages. In general, after an account gets blocked, messages on their talk page (even in good faith) is considered "Grave Dancing". So you didn't really get in trouble for it, it was more of a "Hey, we don't do that on Wikipedia, don't do it again." type of situation. Looking through your edits, majority aren't "problem" edits on Wikipedia, so I can say with high confidence you won't be blocked for that edit. From the way you are talking here, I can tell you are sorry for the edit. Just don't do edits like that in the future, and you should be perfectly ok. From personal experience, I can tell you that edits don't ever "go away", so if you make a mistake in the future, just know that that specific edit has a high chance of being brought back up. Tone and more in responding to vandalism

Hi Idiot Driver, I see you around a lot when patrolling recent changes. It's always good to have more eyes there to catch vandalism, but I think you may want to consider your reasons for doing so.

We're here to build an encylopedia and part of that includes assuming good faith on the part of others, and engaging in a positive manner. I think it's fair to say that slam-dunking on talk pages after edits that could be reasonably construed as tests or attempts to contribute is not done in the spirit of collaboration. I would encourage you to review what's written at WP:VANDAL to get a better sense of what to do about responding to vandalism.

You might find this useful. If you are approaching Wikipedia from the standpoint of looking for someone to get in trouble/blocked, then you have the wrong attitude. The idea is to give a progression of warnings to correct a user making unconstructive edits. Blocking is a last resort except in extreme circumstances. • Idiot Driver, I would consider taking a break from Wikipedia. I am trying to give you the benefit of the doubt, but it seems you aren't taking kindly (or at least not remembering) the advice of others. As we talked about earlier on your talk page about vandalism, you were on your last straw. This wasn't vandalism since it was on your userpage, but no one but you (And Drmies revert a few minutes ago) have edited your userpage. No one wants to vandalize your userpage. I am not an admin, so I cannot officially warn you...though Drmies is an admin and can officially warn you...but as one editor to another, I would take a break from Wikipedia to clear your head. I can almost promise you that anymore "bad edits" will result in either an official warning (which never goes away) or possibly a short block. Trust me, a wikibreak does wonders for an editor. Interesting situation.

So.. my political science professor assigned us a really bizarre assignment. They want us to go on Wikipedia and add false information. I think that's really messed up. I guess we're supposed to record the anti vandal response time, document warnings and blocks ect. The professor stressed that we should "keep pushing". I really don't wanna get sitebanned. This is so bizarre though I just genuinely don't understand what we're even supposed to be learning here. At any rate, I don't know what to do. I'm not doing the assignment. @Idiot Driver: I am just going to be honest with you. The amount of warnings you have gotten show that you should not be editing Wikipedia until you mature more. The advice given to you by HighInBC about taking a few months away from Wikipedia is extremely valuable. In a few months, after you have matured more and are able to edit Wikipedia without causing any disruptive edits would be a perfect time to appeal the ban. Before you appeal again later in life, I would read up on Wikipedia policies, like this one about Etiquette. I hope you do consider appeal the ban in a few months.
