Storm of the month

Xangsane to the east of the Philippines

Typhoon Xangsane, known as Typhoon Milenyo in the Philippines was a destructive typhoon that affected the Philippines and Indochina. The storm caused severe flooding and landslides in the regions it affected and was responsible for at least 279 deaths and $747 million (USD) in damage, mostly in the Philippines and Vietnam. Xangsane formed to the east of the Philippines and rapidly intensified, striking Samar Island as a Category 4 typhoon. It weakened over the Philippines, but again reached Category 4 strength in the South China Sea. After its landfall in Vietnam, the typhoon dissipated, with its remnant crossing Indochina and entering the Bay of Bengal.

Other tropical cyclone activity

• Hurricane Isaac, which formed in September, hit Newfoundland with minimal effects on October 2. It was the only Atlantic storm in October.
• One hurricane, Hurricane Paul, formed in the eastern Pacific and hit Mexico. There were also two tropical storms, Norman and Olivia, and two tropical depressions in the basin.
• In addition to Typhoon Xangsane, two further typhoons and two tropical storms developed in the west Pacific. Typhoon Soulik and Tropical Storms Bebinca and Rumbia both stayed clear of land, whilst Typhoon Cimaron hit the Philippines killing at least 19 people there, before it dissipated in the South China Sea.
• The North Indian Ocean saw one storm, Cyclonic Storm Ogni form in the Bay of Bengal.
• The 2006-2007 Southern Hemisphere tropical cyclone season got underway, with Tropical Cyclone Xavier forming to the west of Fiji. There were two further tropical depressions in the South Pacific and a tropical disturbance in the South Indian Ocean.

New articles and improvements wanted

• Articles are wanted for Hurricane Flossy (1956), Tropical Storm Debbie (1965) and Tropical Storm Beryl (1994).
• The articles on the Regional Specialized Meteorological Centres, such as those on the NHC, JMA and CPHC, all need work.
• Likewise the articles on meteorologists such as Lixion Avila are poor.

Cyclone barnstar

The October Member of the Month is Coredesat. Coredesat joined the WikiProject in March and has contributed to many diverse areas within the project. He has written two featured articles on Atlantic storms and a number of good articles on current typhoons. However, the article he is most proud of is a disambiguation page, a sorely neglected portion of the project.

Tropical cyclone scales

The various agencies which report on tropical cyclones use a variety of different scales to measure the storms strength. The most familiar of these is the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale and this is the de facto standard in the project and should be used everywhere. However, as it is only official in the Atlantic and East Pacific, other local scales should be used when discussing storms in other regions and given primacy over the Saffir-Simpson Scale. The Saffir-Simpson scale is based on 1-minute averages, but other scales are generally based upon 10-minute averages, which are approximately 15% lower.

This table provides a useful-at-a-glance comparison of the various scales currently in use. Further complications arise due to the fact different agencies obtain different estimates for the same storm at the same time, so be careful to use the most appropriate source agency.

Regarding hypothetical hurricanes

Okay i understand, but ya'll need to know a few things: I make hypothetical hurricanes for fun and at no serious matter concerning about real TCs, second i (please excuse my language) suck like hell on making real sandbox articles for real tropical cyclones and lack on vocabluary, sources, etc and contian way too much typos. Regarding the Typhoon Wanda (1962) article

I looked at the Typhoon Wanda article and it looked okay altough the intro needed to be in two paragrah and more info is needed for the Hainan Island impact. However, the guidelines you gave to User:Mitchazenia are in question. Like for example you said.

Which is incorrect, tropical waves do form in the WPAC. The next comment you gave him was very confusing...

I know it happened back in 1962, but do you have any meteorlogical conditions? Why did it strengthen quickly?

There may be any metorlogical conditions, but as for how the storm strengthen to quickly thats impossible to explain because it happened back in 1962 and the JTWC reports do not go into detail and any specifc reason of why wanda strengthen to quickly is next to impossible unless its mentioned in a source about rapid strengthening. The same applies to your addtional comments and the records section should be kept separate from the impact because it had nothing to do with impact. And finally, a good article is NOT determined by the number of sources but the amount of info and how well written it is. Storm05 13:39, 14 November 2006 (UTC)

Well I just found something intresting- 1962's T.D.66W may be Tropical Storm 66W, I just watched an animation of its lifetime. JMA and Digital Typhoon have it under no-name storm, but it follows the same track as TD66W, with a little addition.I think we may have a secret storm. here. I don't know how to read the best tracks very well, so here-6219 is the code. The JMA Best Track data doesn't track depressions for one thing, 66W matches the data start date listed of September 11, 1962. Thanks for the links! The only good info I could only find for Beryl (other than the NHC) was from cnn.com and all of that was just on preparations. I barely could find anything on impact, and I couldn't find a website that mentions about deaths from Beryl other than the one in the TCR report. :-( I would be surprised if I found out there were five webpages solely on Beryl's impact. However, I did find a few good reports from cnn.com for Florence, which is why I thought I had better luck with Florence. I hope it won't take TOO much of your time, but I am asking if you could help me out finding webpages for impact on Beryl, please! That's your choice though. I had a weird idea in my own dream. Since 1962 PTS is getting too long, if i make a other storms section, it wouldn't change. My dream showed making a page called Tropical depressions of the 1962 Pacific typhoon season. The good news is i got ahold of it without your link, but i was awfully dissipointed with the results. Now i ask of a favor, this may be hard but, using the 1962 page and the assessment scale, on my userpage, rate the level of the cyclone history of each cyclone there. The classes on my page are: Stub, C-Class, Start, B-Class, Good-Class, A-Class and of course FA-Class. My userpage has my own opinions, but to me, if you can help by leaving your opinion about each one, it makes my life a lot easier on what to add. Typhoon Freda (1962) article

Im going to create the Typhoon Freda (1962) article but other users are against that, saying that the storm wasnt conntected to the 1962 Columbus Day Storm although most of the online sources clearly states that Freda struck the Western United States as an extratropical storm. Or the two cyclones (tropical and subtropical) that composed Hurricane Gordon (1994). TPC handled Nicolas and Lenny (1999) similarly, even though it seemed clear on satellite imagery that Lenny's low survived an additional week or two as an extratropical cyclone and that Nicolas was absorbed by another low to its west. Be that as it may, the references I've seen concerning our Columbus Day storm talk about it evolving from Freda's extratropical low. In my mind, that would mean the two should be talked about in the same article. I wouldn't be against moving the Columbus Day Storm to an article named Typhoon Freda and talking about its extratropical impact in the last half of the article, as long as cyclone was thrown onto its talk page in addition to hurricane. New article project

Except there's little to no impact. I've tried different google search terms. Should I mention that Kristy missed making landfall and leave it at that, There's no preps or impact. Dude! Are you serious? I didn't know about this. So it's official? We now have at least a dot on a map for tropical cyclones back to 1700? If so that's really freaking cool. Dream come true (hopefully)

If GIBBS expands its image archive back through 1979 like it's suggesting, I will finally be able to see something I've dreamed about for years: The chance to have a God's-eye view of the greatest tropical cyclone ever to roam the seas at its record intensity and unmatched scale. Oh what I wouldn't give to get my hands on such an image. The Hurricane Herald

This is the monthly newsletter of WikiProject Tropical Cyclones. This shortened late issue covers just global tropical cyclone activity in November, to prevent the next newsletter from being too large.

Tropical cyclone activity

• One hurricane, Hurricane Sergio, formed in the eastern Pacific. Sergio was the longest lasting November Pacific hurricane recorded. Two other tropical cyclones, Tropical Storm Rosa and a tropical depression formed in the basin. None of the systems affected land.
• An unusual extratropical cyclone developed in the northern central Pacific, resembling a subtropical cyclone at its peak.
• A total of three typhoons formed in the western Pacific, and all the storms followed a similar track across the Philippines. Typhoon Cimaron formed at the end of October and lasted into November, killing 19 people. Typhoon Chebi existed during the middle of the month and was the weakest of the three causing minor damages. The most devastating storm of the month, Typhoon Durian hit the Philippines on November 30, killing at least 720 people in the island nation.
• Two named cyclones developed in the Southern Hemisphere, Tropical Cyclone Yani in the South Pacific and Moderate Tropical Storm Anita in the Southwest Indian Ocean. Two unnamed depression also formed in the South Pacific. None of these storms affected land.

Editorial

The lateness of this edition is due to me being on an wikibreak and no-one taking up the slack. My wikibreak was the result of a lightning strike damaging my internet connection and frying my router, and the time taken for the replacement to arrive. As this issue is almost 3 weeks later than planned, only the monthly cyclone activity for November has been included. The next letter will be produced for January 7, 2006 and will be larger than normal to cover both month's Wikipedia news and December's tropical activity. There will be no Member or Storm of the month in January, to reduce the length; and the newsletter will return to normal in February.--Nilfanion (talk) 21:59, 22 December 2006 (UTC)

Re: SPAC track

No I don't think I had that one. Looks interesting, but is utterly unusable without some more info. I recognise HURDAT (like)-formatting and from that can extract stuff. However, a link to the source page as well as the BT file would be helpful. That page will have a link to the format description, which should answer any queries (its not obvious whether the sustained winds are 1 min or 10 min or something else for example. One thing I know for sure is that is SHEM not SPAC (Reunion is mentioned). Oh and I know this is a silly place for this, but re Isabel and NEXRAD - do you want a reflectivity image at or near landfall; or something like this?--Nilfanion (talk) 22:29, 27 December 2006 (UTC)

Damn, its borderline useless then. I can extract name/date/locations from the data. However its not that usable for much beyond basic IDs, as its not clear where the data comes from. Without knowing what exactly the data means (the equivalent of this page for HURDAT, I, or anyone else for that matter, cannot really use it with confidence (the knots is obvious but is it always 1 min, always 10 min or a mixture depending on the source agency?) I'll have a proper look around and see if I get lucky, but a lot of that data is wasted without that explanation. The alternative is to write to the institution and get an explanation.
