Thanks for the explanation about maps

Hey, a few months ago I asked you how you made this map. You gave me a simple explanation, and recently I made my first map. It was easier than I thought it would be; thanks for helping me make the jump! Blue Rasberry 01:25, 11 April 2010 (UTC)

Adrian Boult article - pictures

This is the first article I have nominated solo for FA, and I'm not sure where to add comments on the image questions. Should I add them on the FAC page, or somewhere else? e.g I have checked the Holst (1921 but by a photographer who lived till circa 1944, unfortunately for me) but will maintain to my dying breath that the Elgar pic is pre-WWI. A steer on how to take this forward will be gratefully received. - Tim riley (talk) 18:38, 12 April 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for that steer. I'll add to the FAC page tomorrow. Greatly obliged for your help. - Tim riley (talk) 21:36, 12 April 2010 (UTC)
The current position on the Holst picture is summarised on my talk page. Is that now the only outstanding issue? Grateful if the others can be struck through if so, while we close the Holst one off - as quickly as we can. - Tim riley (talk) 06:21, 17 April 2010 (UTC)
Your help on this is much appreciated. Tim riley (talk) 09:42, 17 April 2010 (UTC)

File: O RLY?

  • for the license of the software, see here - it does not mention anything about the output being under any licence
  • the license of the text used was copyied and pasted into the program from the footer (ie. Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License;)
  • the voice is much clearer than some of the other voices on spoken pages. because its computer generated, i can change it by chaning a few lines and re-uploading. it is also the same voice as stephen hawlking, but less roboty, meaning it is a much clearer voice.

I saw your recent edits and you seem fair minded and honest so I would like it if you could weigh in on this Category up for deletion.

Adrian Boult article

Just to let you know that I am about to partially reverted the edit which removed the word "avowed", since in that context that word actually does make sense. Whether one sympathises or not with the LPO's dismissal of Thomas Russell for his political affiliation, it perhaps should be said, in the way of some explanation for their decision, that Russell - as Boult's biographer Kennedy states - "made no secret" of his membership of the Communist party. Given that anti-Communist feeling was then running to hysterical levels (not least in the United States, but also to a degree in the UK), it is perhaps not surprising that there was a feeling that something had to be done about a man in so key a position who made no secret of his membership (rather like the US army feeling obliged to eject anybody who is openly homosexual, for example). So "avowed" makes total sense; if Russell hadn't been so open about his affiliation, perhaps more people would have turned a "blind eye". All best wishes, Alfietucker (talk) 20:13, 20 April 2010 (UTC)

The article has now been promoted to FA. Thank you very much for all your attention to the review. Tim riley (talk) 22:52, 20 April 2010 (UTC)

Hello

Thanks for your observations. I prefer to reply here this time as I have a few outstanding GANs, and editors are keeping an eye on my talk page. You raise a good point. I just had quite a bit of a disagreement with an editor whose GAN I was reviewing. This went on for two days. I felt that I was helping make his article better, but he stopped short of calling me a dictator, and said that I was making up GAN requirements and going beyond the published requirements. I bit my tongue and tried to be as nice and as constructive as possible, but he had an attack for every single point I made. Every single one. I have to say that I was very disillusioned over the whole thing, and was wondering if I have been too tough on my reviews. For the article you were referring to, technically, there is nothing wrong with each of the requirements for GAN. There are too many quotes but the editor can easily argue that there are no rules that say you can't have that. The problem is the loose wording in the requirements. What are the definitions of "well written", "broad" and "focused"? They are all open to interpretation. I guess I was in a bit of a "surrender mood" and it was the editor's lucky day as far as his GAN was concerned. Not a good reason, I know. Just that I didn't feel like being attacked anymore in the same day. I will have no hard feelings if you delist it. Do so if you feel that it does not deserve it. Once again, thanks for you note. :-) -- S Masters (talk) 11:38, 21 April 2010 (UTC)

I understand that, I recently read a review (I had no hand in the article or review) where someone was called a jerk for a simple disagreement. It's rough with some people :) Hekerui (talk) 11:45, 21 April 2010 (UTC)

GAN backlog elimination drive - 1 week to go

First off, on behalf of myself and my co-coordinator Wizardman, I would like to thank you for the efforts that you have made so far in this GAN backlog elimination drive. It has been nothing short of a success, and that is thanks to you. See this Signpost article about what this drive has achieved so far.

We're currently heading into the final week of the drive. At this time, if you have any GANs on review or on hold, you should be finishing off those reviews. Right now, we have more GANs on review or on hold than we do unreviewed. If you're going to start a GA review, please do so now so you can complete it by the end of the month and so that the nominator has a full 7-day window to address any concerns.

See you at the finish!

Cricketers

Hi there. According to WP:BIO, these individuals are notable, as they have all competed at the highest level of their sport. Therefore, they all pass Wikipedia notability criteria.

Hope all is well. Bobo. 15:28, 30 April 2010 (UTC)

Adding my voice, as with other sportsmen, per WP:ATHLETE, a single appearance in highest level sport qualifies cricketers as notable automatically. See WP:CRIN for more information. Cheers, --Dweller (talk) 17:56, 30 April 2010 (UTC)

Hi, I have a quick question. I added the online link in the lead because I've submitted it to DYK. Is it not necessary to have a source in the lead so it can be approved at DYK? Also added persondata (that's a nifty feature I didn't know about!). Truthkeeper88 (talk) 20:34, 30 April 2010 (UTC)

Round up and give them the the benefit of the doubt. Daniel Case (talk) 20:37, 30 April 2010 (UTC)
(Reply to Truthkeeper88) Hi, the fact must be sourced where it appears in the article, but not necessarily in the lead, and no online source is either, when a reliable offline source exists it is taken in good faith. And persondata for bios are always good :) Hekerui (talk) 20:41, 30 April 2010 (UTC)
In that case, thanks for removing - I would have done eventually anyway. Also, thanks for the assessment. I haven't worked on may bios, (aside from the months I've spent on the EH bio!) so it's nice to learn a new trick. Truthkeeper88 (talk) 20:45, 30 April 2010 (UTC)

Thank you for your participation in the April 2010 GAN backlog elimination drive

GAN backlog elimination drives chart up to 1 May

On behalf of my co-coordinator Wizardman, I'd like to especially thank you for your efforts over this past month's GAN backlog elimination drive. It has been nothing short of a complete success, which hopefully results in more expedient good article reviews, increasing users' confidence in the good article nomination processes. Even if you made just a small contribution, it still helped contribute to the success of this drive. Here is what we have accomplished this last month in this drive.

  • 661 total nominations were reviewed. 541 of them passed (~81.8%), 97 (~14.7%) failed, and 23 (~3.5%) ended on hold.
  • The WP:GAN page started at 110,126 bytes length on 1 April and ended at 43,387 bytes length at the end of 30 April (a 66,739 byte reduction in the page, about 60.6% less).
  • Excluding extremes, the longest wait for someone's GAN to be review was about 11.5 weeks at the beginning. (I mistook the figure when I reported to the Signpost that it was 13.) At the end, with the exception of one that was relisted, the longest wait is now at 10 days.
  • 63 different users participated, each having completed at least one GAN, with others also having helped out behind-the-scenes in making the drive a success.
  • The drive started with 463 GA nominations remaining and 388 unreviewed. At the end of the month, we ended with 89 remaining (374 or about 80.8% less) and 47 unreviewed (341 or about 87.9% less).

For those who have accomplished certain objectives in the drive, awards will be coming shortly. Again, thank you for your help in the drive, and I hope you continue to help review GA nominations and overall improve the quality of articles here on Wikipedia.

Sources

We've never had a problem with updating the chart positions before so don't come up on me like I did something wrong. BravesFan2006 updates them every Monday, and I noticed on my watchlist that HalfShadow had changed the peak back to #9 on Miranda Lambert discography. And I know where to check, so I did and it says #7. So it's not my fault for adding it. EnDaLeCoMpLeX (talk) 21:37, 3 May 2010 (UTC)

COPYRIGHT

Hi, sorry i've uploaded three of images earlier, "stalin.jpg", asad-zaidi.jpg", and "safdar.jpg", were taken from some site because i dnt knw much abt wikipedia's copyright policy...My apology for that, however this image on "brinda karat" page is clicked by one of my friend, and you can not find another copy of it on the whole internet. In future nothing "copyrighted content", will be uploaded by me on wikiipedia. I am a professional photographer as well, and thinking to make an open source image bank, so that the users over internet can get some of the beautiful pictures for their articles inside public domain only....

Thnx. and regards.

Image size

Could you please clarify exactly why it was necessary to remove the image size for the infobox on Jim Moran? I don't see why it is at all helpful to the reader to be shrinking the image to such ridiculous proportions. ~BLM (talk) 21:48, 14 May 2010 (UTC)

"ridiculous number of columns"

After reverting you at Hans Schwerte I realised that by "ridiculous number" you might have referred to something like 6 or so on an extremely large screen, not to the number 16 that appears in the parameter. In any case I have chosen the parameter so that none of the footnotes gets a line break, optimising the space for all screen widths. E.g. for my configuration with 1280 pixels there are 4 columns, which appears just right to me. If you are really concerned about very wide screens, lets just increase the parameter to, say 20em or 30em, not remove it altogether. Hans Adler 11:56, 17 May 2010 (UTC)

Hi, I should have phrased that differently, sorry, it's just that I already have a small screen and the citations still all fit into a single line and it just looks bizarre. It's not that many citations anyway. Hekerui (talk) 13:14, 17 May 2010 (UTC)
Have you set a tiny font? The only way I can force all citations into a single line is by making the font so small that I can barely read it. Hans Adler 15:06, 17 May 2010 (UTC)
The colums have, at most, two entries, and that's what I mean with looking like a line. Hekerui (talk) 16:30, 17 May 2010 (UTC)

Translation

Hi there! I notice that you are a native German speaker, and was wondering if you could improve a translation for me. I've done extrapolation from a Google translation, but it could probably still be improved. Take a look at the caption for the image: Nazi propaganda#In power (1933-39). Jujutacular T · C 08:25, 19 May 2010 (UTC)

What's weird about that poster is the formulation "der ... der ..." which makes the statement more ambiguous, because it could either mean the exhibition is considered of the NSDAP and of the Gauleitung, explain that the Gauleitung is of the NSDAP, or mean that the exhibition of the Gauleitung is of the NSDAP. I would tend to the second option, but the formulation is still awkward (the language from 1937 is not markedly different from today's). If that's not too disappointing and you ever need help with German, I'll gladly help out. Hekerui (talk) 08:59, 19 May 2010 (UTC)
Your guess is ten times better than mine :) I literally have no knowledge of German. Thank you very much, I'll definitely keep you in mind if I ever need any more help. Also, I've nominated the picture to be featured (Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates/Bolschewismus ohne Maske), so maybe your translation will appear on the main page :) Jujutacular T · C 16:27, 19 May 2010 (UTC)

Hi

I've told debjani basu to email wikipedia, the permission for that photograph, hopefully it will take a few days time. Moreever, "you've asked why i've uploaded so many photographs", so sorry about that, but initially there were 2 pics, i've upoaded the second one, because of the size difference b/w the 2. I thought the previoius one got corrupted, sorry abt that.

Also I want to ask, is there any way, that suppose I've a book over stalin, published before 1950's, so i want to upload some images of it on wikipedia, and also as per the Indian copyright law, work more than 60 years old is in public domain. So we can upload it, citing reference of Indian Copyright act,(however globally it is 70 years.).

In this way, I hope that we can add some of the most memorable photographs to wikipedia or wikimedia.

Plz. reply.

Hi. I saw you are not the author of the image. Could you provide evidence of permission (OTRS of the email allowing the GNU License or weblink to permission)? Thank you. Hekerui (talk) 18:49, 26 May 2010 (UTC)

Hi. I received permission via an email to my personal email. I am not up to date on the GNU licensing in Wikipedia, so I am not sure how I can include that permission, or whether it is valid. TigerShark (talk) 22:48, 30 May 2010 (UTC)
As I recall I sent them all the GNU links and they replied saying that it was fine. The Yahoo email account I was using (which I only use for Wikipedia) seems to have been deleted due to lack of use, which isn't very helpful. TigerShark (talk) 22:57, 30 May 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, I can do that. Is there a template for this sort of email, that I could use? TigerShark (talk) 23:03, 30 May 2010 (UTC)
Thanks. I have sent the email. Hope to get a response soon and will send it as soon as I receive it. TigerShark (talk) 23:24, 30 May 2010 (UTC)

Hi again. I got a response from LoveHeals.org which I have temporarily posted here (I have removed my email address from the text). I intend to forward this to the OTRS email, but I wondered if you could let me know if it will be sufficient before I do so. Also, if I forward an email ,with its headers, will my IP and email addresses in the email header be stored, and who will have access to them? Thanks for your help. Jennifer Korbee 6 09 File

How many times is permission needed to keep the photo on Wikipedia? Documentation was sent to this site from the photographer in June 2009, therefore allowing the photo to remain on this site permanantly. I would assume that once permission is granted one time to use the photo, it would be able to be used on this site without being renewed continually. I will be reuploading the photo, considering adequate documentation was provided at one point in time. JennFan24 (talk) 20:54, 31 May 2010 (UTC)

Who was the deleting administrator? When documentation was received last year, I was assured that the e-mail went through and permission was granted. JennFan24 (talk) 22:48, 31 May 2010 (UTC)

Reviewer rights

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, will be commencing a a two-month trial at approximately 23:00, 2010 June 15 (UTC).

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under flagged protection. Flagged protection is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. Karanacs (talk) 15:31, 15 June 2010 (UTC)

Image copyvio tagging

Thanks for working on them! We actually do need to verify that the image really is the same and that there is no given license, so if you happen to know them (rather than just "looks like something probably taken from a site-name"), it's a big help for admins. Can you comment on the talk page about the changes following the end of the protection? Hekerui (talk) 18:15, 18 June 2010 (UTC)

I agree with most of them, though it seems the IP user and you didn't exactly reach consensus on it. To elaborate:
  • I linked the original Washington Times article which is free-to-access for everyone, and it indeed supports the Ukrainian / Israeli claim. Since it is now visibly sourced for everyone it should stay in unless another reliable source with a counterclaim is found.
  • I Re-Removed the redundant categories, as they are either higher-lever categories or categories that should not contain any data, such as "Category:Israeli musicians by instrument". The latter one is merely a top level category for the other instrument-related categories so having it on any article makes no sense at all.
  • I removed wallies bar as the article never even mentions it. As soon as the article at least mentions it (And sources it), it may be an ok link but until then it seems entirely unrelated.
Note that these are just my findings as another user, not as an admin. Though i would point out that WP:MOSCAT, WP:V (+ the related WP:truth essay) and WP:ELNO point 19 support these edits. Excirial (Contact me,Contribs) 18:37, 18 June 2010 (UTC)

Jack Conway photo

Hi Hekerui. I've replaced the old image on the Jack Conway (politician) article with the newer one because I've just received permission from the campaign to use the newer photo under a CC 3.0 license. I've forwarded the permission to OTRS. Hopefully they don't have too much of a backlog and can update the commons to reflect that soon. I wasn't sure if I was following protocol in replacing the image before OTRS gives its thumbs up, but decided to be bold since the other photo is more or less hideous. Gobonobo T C 22:40, 21 June 2010 (UTC)

Alright, Hekerui, thanks for the info on archiving proceedures and I see your point on most of what you did. This post, however is not redundant (you won't find it anywhere but here), it is a request that you respond in the AFD to the new changes which addressed one or more of your concerns. Its disturbing to see someone suggest something for deletion, laugh at someone that asks for its retention and then ignore the creator when he changes something you referred to - it seems to show an irresponsible prejudice. All I'm asking for is the same effort you put into suggesting a deletion be put into continuing the discussion - that is why its called an AFD DISCUSSION. It isn't a voting booth. Unless something changes you're probably only on the hook for 4 more days at any rate :(. Thanks again, ChildrenOfLight (talk) 00:25, 23 June 2010 (UTC)

I did not start the AFD or laugh at anyone or whatever. You're perhaps a little too emotional. Hekerui (talk) 00:42, 23 June 2010 (UTC)
I'm sorry if I come on strong sometimes :). The record speaks for itself and maybe "laugh" is too strong a word for "really takes the cake". I'll apologize for that :). I know you didn't start the AFD, but you gave an opinion to further deletion proceedures which should make you responsible to the deletion discussion, since I addressed your points and asked for feedback (there and here). If you just want to say, "I don't care what you've done, ChildrenOfLight, and I don't care what you do - it isn't going to change my mind" then I'm perfectly fine with that, but I want it in the open - otherwise I feel you should stay engaged. Thanks, and yeah, my post above was a little strong, sorry :)

Journolist

Thumbs up on your changes to the final bits of the Ezra_Klein#JournoList section. Much better than my change. 68.104.176.42 (talk) 21:52, 25 June 2010 (UTC)

CullVernon & Rand Paul

Hello, your help is needed urgently. User_talk:CullVernon who you've warned and was eventually blocked for his disruptive edits to Rand Paul was recently unblocked, and is at it again. He has removed any mention of Paul's controversies, even the ones Paul's campaign, the RNC, and the AP have dealt with heavily and publicly. He's made eleven edits to this effect within the past few hours alone. Your help is appreciated, thank you76.123.241.114 (talk) 05:09, 29 June 2010 (UTC)
