WikiCup 2018 May newsletter

The second round of the 2018 WikiCup has now finished. Most contestants who advanced to the next round scored upwards of 100 points, but two with just 10 points managed to scrape through into round 3. Our top scorers in the last round were:

  • Scotland Cas Liber, our winner in 2016, with three featured articles
  • Republic of Texas Iazyges, with nine good articles and lots of bonus points
  • India Yashthepunisher, a first time contestant, with two featured lists
  • Cascadia (independence movement) SounderBruce, a finalist last year, with seventeen good topic articles
  • United States Usernameunique, a first time contestant, with fourteen DYKs
  • San Francisco Muboshgu, a seasoned competitor, with three ITNs and
  • South Carolina Courcelles, another first time contestant, with twenty-seven GARs

So far contestants have achieved twelve featured articles between them and a splendid 124 good articles. Commendably, 326 GARs have been completed during the course of the 2018 WikiCup, so the backlog of articles awaiting GA review has been reduced as a result of contestants' activities. As we enter the third round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 2 but before the start of round 3 can be claimed in round 3. Remember too that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them. When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met; most of the GARs are fine, but a few have been a bit skimpy.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Did you know: Henry Boynton Clitz

Thanks for noting my error, accepting the correction and promoting the article. I appreciate your modification of the hook, as well. I think it is another good catch not to leave a possible implication that dates that Clitz was commandant of cadets included the date of his "disappearance" and almost certain suicide - or perhaps carelessness due to his mental condition. I am leaving my note here rather than in the template because that has already been closed for discussion. Donner60 (talk) 08:52, 9 May 2018 (UTC)

Hi, why did you promote this nomination when it wasn't yet approved? I was waiting for the page creator to complete work on the second article so we could have a double hook. I returned the template to WP:DYKNA. Yoninah (talk) 13:23, 9 May 2018 (UTC)

@Yoninah: Sorry about that. My understanding was the nomination (with a single bolded article) was approved by Courcelles [1] , and the double hook idea was just a nice-to-have. Given that a week passed from the creation of Swallow Music Awards without an effort to nominate that for a hook, I assumed the nominator wasn't going to do that. Anyway, I thought the state of Swallow Music Awards was not a reason to hold up the original approved hook. I understand if you disagree with this thinking, and won't dispute your revert of my promotion. I will be more careful next time. Also if you don't think it's ready for promotion, can you remove it from WP:DYKNA? I thought the reason for DYKNA as opposed to WP:DYKN was to separate hooks that are ready. HaEr48 (talk) 16:35, 9 May 2018 (UTC)
Thanks for your response. I will be in touch with the page creator to see if he's going to bring Swallow Music Awards up to start-class or not. Actually, it's the bot that moves approved hooks to WP:DYKNA. But when someone adds a question mark, the bot doesn't move it back to WP:DYKN. Only when a new reviewer is needed do I manually move a nomination back to WP:DYKN so more eyes will see it. Otherwise, things just sit on the Approved page until they're really approved. Best, Yoninah (talk) 17:30, 9 May 2018 (UTC)

DYK for State communications in the Neo-Assyrian Empire

On 10 May 2018, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article State communications in the Neo-Assyrian Empire, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the state communication system developed in the Neo-Assyrian Empire enabled communication speed unsurpassed in the Middle East until the advent of telegraphy? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/State communications in the Neo-Assyrian Empire. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, State communications in the Neo-Assyrian Empire), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Semaphore

Just explaining: the original wording in the Assyrian Communications article just said that nothing faster than the mule messenger system existed until telegraphy, without mentioning the Middle East. That's not correct, since the French had semaphore a century earlier. As currently written it is accurate. IAmNitpicking (talk) 14:16, 11 May 2018 (UTC)

@IAmNitpicking: Right, thanks for pointing that out. HaEr48 (talk) 17:12, 11 May 2018 (UTC)

@Baffle gab1978: Hold on, didn't HLHJ already copyedit it? But wouldn't mind if you'd still like to improve it :) HaEr48 (talk) 00:35, 24 May 2018 (UTC)

Nor would I mind, I'm not an experienced copyeditor :) HLHJ (talk) 02:41, 24 May 2018 (UTC)
It's still on the requests page and hasn't been marked with {{working}}, {{partly done}} or {{done}}, so I was unaware of HLHJ's intent. I should have checked his single edit here... d'oh! ;) But I think it does need more work and i found some more typos... I'll happily credit you as co-copy-editor in the archives HLHJ; thanks for your work on the article. Cheers, Baffle gab1978 03:10, 24 May 2018 (UTC)

I have reviewed the DYK of Maram Sudarmodjo, Indonesia at the 1952 Summer Olympics. Good work. I recommended selecting the original hook instead of ALT1. Vanguard10 (talk) 03:11, 29 May 2018 (UTC)
Would you kindly take another look at the DYK nomination because I edited the article. Vanguard10 (talk) 05:06, 30 May 2018 (UTC)
