Your opinion please

Hi HJ, I've come to ask your opinion on something. I'm doing a GA review at the moment, and noticed that the article is extremely similar to one of the sources. It's certainly not a clear-cut copy-paste copyright infringement, but, well, take a look yourself: source, original version of the article, current version of the article (compare for example the 'early life' vs 'life history' sections). I'm not usually given to copyright paranoia, especially on an article which is about to make GA and has been heavily edited since, but it's essentially just paraphrasing every sentence in the source. I asked the author to explain the similarities, you can see his response at the very bottom of this page. What do you think should be done about it (if anything)? I think the question is not if there is an intent to disparage. The question is if the content disparage and i think it does. Most of it is in addition un-sourced and sometimes negative. You might not be fully informed about the case.

Just to bring forward one example that is not fun at all: User:Geo_Swan/Guantanamo/Ibrahim_Zeidan_reports_Abu_Zubaydah_image_used_as_an_interrogation_tool#Funny_aspects_of_Abu_Zubaydah.27s_claims This section disparage the subject. This section makes fun about various statements Abu Zubaydah gave. There is nothing funny here. Tortured or not this section disparage the subject by making fun of statements he gave during his detention. No reason to stick to such content. I would like to ask you to reconsider. That is actually an interesting point. :) I must admit i am quite new to speedy deletion rules. But i do not sure that was intended to be an article. But the point still stands: the page does serve a purpose other than disparaging or threatening its subject. It doesn't fit neatly into G10: letting the MfD run its course is the better option. Hi HJ. I made an edit (actually a revert) on the Yom Kippur War article and my edit was not automatically accepted but "pending review." Since I've been granted reviewer status, I found myself in the odd position of accepting my own pending edit. Here is the subject edit and here is the revision history for the article. I have started an RfC on inappropriate userboxes, i.e. those that don't follow the introductory paragraph at WP:UBX:

How does a userbox about a user's own preferences in regards to what topics on Wikipedia they hate and what type of sexually explicit material they like and actively view help Wikipedians collaborate with one another? Which is the question I am raising.

I can't because the article was deleted as a result of an AfD. You'd have to take it up with the admin who closed the AfD (the AfD was probably closed by a different admin to the one shown in the deletion log because the large history required steward intervention) or at DRV. I suggest Huggle. Contrary to what Airplaneman says, you do not need to install anything; Huggle is a standalone program. The IRC problem is fixed, and Huggle doesn't crash at all for me; maybe that's just a client-side problem with Access Denied. —MC10 (T•C•GB•L) 18:53, 14 October 2010 (UTC)

Uh, I think Airplaneman's point was that you need to install Huggle ;-) Twinkle, say, doesn't require even a standalone program - it's all JavaScripty magic. Huggle is also a .net application - you need either Windows, or Wine. I had nae luck with Huggle-on-Wine, so I'm still using Twinkle. Never tried Igloo - the concept scares me... I've never used Huggle, but I like Igloo because it's very easy to use but more importantly, it doesn't require any more effort to start using than adding a line to a .js page. Just to throw in my two cents, I have used Igloo since soon after it first came out, and I think that it is fantastic. It still has some bugs, obviously, due to the fact that it isn't finished, but that is not a reason to not use it. Instead, I would think that it is a reason to use it, because Ale jrb can get feedback on how it works, and improve it more. On June 2010 you protected two articles on Armenian topic - Dadivank Monastery and Gandzasar monastery, but after they were unprotected, user Quantum666 again continues editwarring by adding dubious text without any consensus (see [1][2][3][4]). He continously violates remedies of AA2 (Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration/Armenia-Azerbaijan 2). Few days ago he was warned[5] for another editwarring on the same topic. IGLOO

Odd. Try it in Google chrome. That's the browser I use and I've never had any problems with it. In monobook, you get a link in the second box below the search bar but I don't know where it is in vector because vector is a horrible, horrible, horrible skin! A couple of things spring to mind: firstly, HTTPS doesn't work - you'll need to use the regular (HTTP) server. Secondly, define "not working" ;-) For example, when I start Igloo with the secure server (HTTPS) by clicking on the "Igloo | (launch)" link I get a pop-up window that displays text, apparently successfully, until it gets as far as "Warning: igloo server returned an error: token-mismatch: your request token could not be verified by the server. Loading stopped." "Not working" covers a multitude of sins, and doesn't aid debugging... TFOWR 11:18, 18 October 2010 (UTC) I'm also using monobook, with vector your milage may vary... Are you using a modified version of Firefox? I'm using Firefox 3.6.11 (the latest version) and it works fine. Otherwise, try deleting your profile in your %appdata% folder for Firefox (start -> run (or windows key + R) -> %appdata% -> OK -> click on Mozilla -> Firefox -> Profiles -> delete the default profile folder completely), then restart your whole computer and then also Firefox. Do you have the "content" tab now? Otherwise, try doing a clean install of Firefox by uninstalling it and (re-)installing the newest version. Hi NaidNdeso. HJ Mitchell deleted this article because it had been proposed for deletion (by another editor) for sever days, and no one had objected to the article being deleted. The article was about a future event, and because it was unreferenced (and hence unverifiable) it wasn't really suitable for an article at this time. If you wish I can restore the article; however, I would strongly recommend that you quickly address the concerns that led to the article being deleted - otherwise it is likely to be deleted again. Naming question

Hi HJ, I just have a quick question about naming. I'm working with a Mexican English student and her classmates and they have written an article entitled PyMEs in Mexico, which needs to be moved to an English name, I assume. So should it be "Small and medium enterprise in Mexico", "SMEs (english acronym) in Mexico" or something I just haven't thought of yet? (talk page stalker) It's a hard question... I don't think there is an acronym for the PyMEs (Pequeñas y Medianas Empresas) in English. It translates to "small and middle-sized businesses"; it's a very long title, but I think the best is to use Small and middle-sized businesses in Mexico. Even when you tell them you don't plan on doing that kind of stuff they still want to see it. Having those shows a certain level of understanding of policy. I heard HJ Mitchell saying he was going to be busy for a while, so I'll answer this. Right now, I wouldn't think about running an RfA. Your edit count is probably fine, since we've promoted admins with less than half that many, but it's the content of the edits that matters. Right now, your top-edited article is a song that ended up being redirected, and your 2nd-most edited article is one where your edits were just reversion of vandalism. It's good but you don't really have a lot content contributions yet, which would lead some people to oppose. Also, you've only been editing for about six months, and a lot of people will want to see more experience even if the experience you do have is near perfect. It has never been shown over here, as far as I know. And while I've caught a fair number of BBC programmes over on the continent, I can't readily think of any ITV ones. Mick

HJ, it is an established practice to impose editing restrictions on editors as an alterative to a block. If Mick would only cut down on the walls of text at AfD and DRV, coupled with the incivility that goes with it, then I'm sure his comments would carry a bit more weight. He is his own worst enemy here, as has been said by many editors. Contrary to what he says, I'm not out to eliminate him, nor to ban him completely from AfD and DRV. IMHO, he just needs to be reined in a bit for a while. As I said, I'm open to the restrictions being lifted over time should they be imposed. The alternative is that Mick stays indefinitely blocked. I completely agree. However, the problem is not in the replying to every reply. Even if it were, don't reply and the problem is solved. The problem is the incivility and the confrontational nature of the replies. If the replies were kept respectful and civil, there wouldn't (at least in my view) be an issue. It's for the closer to separate the wheat from the chaff and the vast majority of AfD closers are experienced in doing so. I don't, by any means, condone the confrontational nature of Mick's posts in multiple AfDs, but restricting the number of posts he can make is not the way to go. Your thoughts? What alternatives are there? A complete civility restriction, or a complete prohibition on filing AfDs and DRVs, and participation therein. You'll note that I've not even mentioned a civility restriction in what I propose. Mick, is an editor that is of "fiery" temperament. We have to learn to deal with such characters in RL, and so we do on Wikipedia. It's just a question of being realistic here and accepting what we are dealing with. Well if we could come up with a workable, enforceable civility restriction of some sort, I think that would solve much of the problem. The problem is not the number of posts he makes to any given AfD, but the manner in which he contributes to the discussion. After all, when two editors disagree over the notability of something as strongly as you and Mick do over plane and train crashes, they should be allowed to discuss it. Civilly. @MJ: Adherence to CIV is something we should aim for, but not something we should expect to happen overnight. Swearing is not, in and of itself, uncivil, though. There's a big difference between telling someone to, say, "fuck off" and, say, "what the fuck does that have to do with anything". The former is obviously unacceptable, the latter, while not the best way to express oneself, is more than likely just an expression of frustration. Questioning another's understanding of a policy/guideline/essay is also not necessarily uncivil, though inferring one is an idiot because of said understanding very much is.
