Pershing[edit]

As I understand it...

The 248th Ordnance Detachment and the 251st Ordnance Detachment were formed at Redstone Arsenal and deployed to Germany in 1964. The 248th Ordnance Detachment was attached to the 4th Ordnance Company in Miesau and the 251st Ordnance Detachment was attached to the 3rd Ordnance Company in Karlsruhe. Both were under AWSCOM- Army Special Weapons Command.

In 1967, AWSCOM became the 59th Ordnance Brigade and 248th and 251st merged to become the 579th Ordnance Company in Kaiserlautern along with the Equipment Modification Shop. The 579th later moved to Sinsheim (this is debated) and the Mod Shop moved to Frankfurt. The 579th later moved to Neu-Ulm where it later became HHQ and D 55th Maintenance Battalion, later renamed 55th Support Battalion.

OR...

The 251st Ordnance Detachment deployed to Fort Sill to support 2nd Battalion, 79th Field Artillery; both were going to deploy to Korea, and both were later deactivated. It was the 250th Ordnance Detachment that deployed to Karlsruhe.

It depends on whose story you listen to. Either way, the 579th did not come until later. I haven't had enough reliable sources to really start working the support units. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 21:36, 17 June 2009 (UTC) 579th ORD (1978-1980) 55th Maint (185-1989)[reply]
