Have things simmered down? I have only taken a glance at your talk page, but per your self-description I'd say you're an perfect editor for an RfA: Helpful, experienced, and low-key in the sense of "uncontroversial, unlikely to ever do anything stupid". If you're not completely loath to go through an RfA (which can be as pleasant and joyful as it can be nerve-wracking and discouraging), aren't having closets full of fresh skeletons in your contributions, and aren't unwilling to accept a nomination from me (would be my first, and we've only had minor contact here so far, so feel free to decline me), I'd be happy to take a deeper look to check if I notice any problems during the next week or so. What say you?

So, after taking a moment to go "agh-blush-panic-hide", I say "thank you very much" - I'd be honoured if you'd nominate me (and if anyone is talk-page stalking and interested in this, they are welcome to chip in with any comments/thoughts/rotten vegetables too).

As for skeletons, there's nothing serious I can think of. As I've said on my talk page, I originally edited with another account, User:Molly Doonesbury, which I've identified here and on that account's user page (and which made nothing but noobish gnome edits before my original interest waned). I made a few bad AfD nominations in my earlier days (list of all of 'em here), and I got this CSD tagging wrong last week. Not all of the articles I started are especially lengthy (though I've been the creator of and a major contributor to three good articles). And I killed a man in Reno just to watch him die, but that's going back a few years now. If you do have time to take a more thorough look I'd really appreciate your feedback, whether you decide you want to nom or not. Thanks again very much for the offer. I notice that a large part of your NPP edits are from patrolling the front of the log. That's an important job, in particular to catch attack pages and copyright violations as soon as possible, but WP:BITE is a concern. What's your stance on marking very new pages (few minutes old) for maintainance or deletion for other reasons (G11, A1-A10, PROD, or AfD)?

Oh, and FWIW: I know that you understand plagiarism since I've seen you do rewrites of close paraphrasing during NPP, but as a matter of principle I still spot-checked a few of your articles, and was initially worried when the very first bit I checked promptly showed up on an EU website; but of course the opposite is the case, their page was written a few months after your article. So congratulations, your article (and its first reference) has been plagiarized by the Party of European Socialists. :) Amalthea 16:08, 24 January 2011 (UTC)

As for tagging very new pages: I don't have a hard-and-fast rule or time threshold for when it's appropriate to add deletion or maintenance tags to articles, but these are the factors I consider:

• It's certainly always preferable to give users time and the benefit of the doubt to improve a page, so unless an article looks very clearly futureless I'll avoid tagging it at all in its first few minutes after creation. I'll sometimes go and raise issues on a user's talk page very soon after they create an article, especially for brand-new users, instead.
• "Clearly futureless" articles, as well as G10s and G12s, could include:
  • Very clear G3s (straight-up vandalism cases (where G10 doesn't apply) I find actually rather rare, but you get the odd db-hoax that you can spot a mile off)
  • Very clear G1s, in theory, though I find this also extremely rare - because nonsense can be in the eye of the beholder, I prefer to exercise caution with this one and hold off on tagging. It's possible, though, to get very patent cases and it might be appropriate to tag these promptly.
  • Very clear G11s (advertising - the commonest case in which I've felt it's appropriate to tag such pages soon after creation is where a single user is repeatedly recreating a page following a prior speedy deletion, and has not responded to attempts to engage them on their user talk pages. Obviously simply tagging the article for deletion is not the only step necessary to respond to such cases - you need to also follow up with the user on their talk page, consider a page protection request, and consider escalating warnings toward a block.)
  • Very clear A7s. A good example would be the Rebecca kent article I tagged yesterday (and I believe I did place that tag within minutes of the article's creation). The content of the article and the username of the creator made it clear that this was not a serious attempt at creating an encyclopedic article and I felt it was appropriate to tag quickly.
• G5 could technically be applied right after creation, but I've never encountered such a case.
• Many of the criteria almost never apply to articles within a few minutes of creation: A1 and A3 should be avoided and the user given time to elaborate (I'll sometimes ask users on their usertalk pages to do so). It takes time to establish the applicability of G4 (besides, as a non-admin without access to deleted content, I can rarely be sure this applies anyway - I don't think I've ever used it), G6, G8, A2, A5, A9, and usually A10, so practically speaking they are very rarely suitable for moments-old articles.
• I don't believe it's generally appropriate to add a PROD or AFD tag to a minutes-old article, not least because I think it's incumbent on the tagger to perform their own notability check before going down those routes, and it's hard to assure yourself a subject lacks notability in a couple of minutes. BLPPROD could technically be added to a very new article, but I prefer to avoid that in an article's first moments too: obviously the BLP policy is very important, but in cases where a lack of sources is a BLP's most serious problem - that is, where none of the more urgent vandalism, copyright, or even asserted notability concerns apply - you're generally looking at a serious and good-faith attempt to create an encyclopedia article, and I find it's better to engage with the creator and ask them to help out with referencing (or do it myself).

So - that's my approach. If there are any particular taggings I've made that you want to know more about or have concerns about, let me know and I'll try to figure out what I was thinking. Gonzonoir (talk) 08:52, 25 January 2011 (UTC)

Just to try to distill this to a more readable form: I think it's generally better to avoid tagging brand-new articles if possible, but there are some cases where a new creation is so clearly devoid of material that has a future in the encyclopedia that there's no benefit to prolonging the inevitable. Wikipedia Ambassador Program is looking for new Online Ambassadors

Hi! I didn't actually know that any editor could remove a CSD tag, so thanks for filling me in! And in my defense ;D the first draft of the article when I tagged it wasn't nearly as comprehensive as it is now. The only "claim to fame" the author made then was that he was a Teddy Roosevelt enthusiast. I must say though, that editor did do a lot of expansion in those few hours. Anyway I'm babbling now. Deletion Records of Wikipedia

i have heard a rumor that Wikipedia has a record of files that were deleted and was wondering if i could request one so that it maybe be added to Uncyclopedia. this article is about how Millard Fillmore gave rise to Godzilla and i am told by the writer that it was on Wikipedia for six months then deleted for the obvious reason that it was not true. if this article could be accessed or if you know who i could ask to receive this article(such as another administrator) please email me at [redacted] also if you have seen this article elsewhere on the web please let me know for i cannot find it on the internet. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.100.237.49 (talk)

Hello - interesting! As a relatively new admin I'm not yet that familiar with supplying copies of deleted content, so I've asked for others' practical advice at the administrators' noticeboard. Meanwhile, a few comments:

• Firstly, it is indeed true that most (but not all) deleted material remains visible to administrators, and copies can be supplied according to the limits described at Wikipedia:Delete#Access_to_deleted_pages. I'd need to look at the page's contents to determine whether I could send you a copy of this article according to those principles. Which brings me on to my second point:
• Do you know the title of the deleted page (or the username of the person who created it)? I've had an initial look and can't find material that matches your description, but it's pretty hard to find deleted articles without knowing their titles or the names of the users who worked on them. I don't see this material elsewhere online either - Deletionpedia is a good place to look for deleted Wikipedia articles, but I can't find the material you describe on there.

Thanks for the feel-better message regarding administrative editing mishaps. It worked - I feel better. Saying that WP isn't intuitive is an understatement: I find it to a quagmire! Perhaps there will be a project initiated one day to clean up the new players help pages and consolidate topics or at least to stream-line navigation to all those pages and pages of info? Without a concerted effort, things will only get increasingly complicated, producing a steeper and steeper learning curve. And I can't ski! .^_^. Wordreader (talk) 01:21, 22 February 2011 (UTC)

You're welcome. It would actually be very helpful to get your comments about the aspects of the help and guidance materials that are particularly confusing: once you've been around for a while the early memories fade, and I can no longer tell what's confusing and obscure when encountered for the first time. If you haven't already, you might like to check out the Wikipedia tutorial for a quick walkthrough of some of the basic editing processes, but really the error you made was a very easy one to do and not something you should feel bad about at all. Remember it's exceptionally easy on Wikipedia to "undo" almost any action, so everyone gets license to make mistakes :) Gonzonoir (talk) 13:22, 24 February 2011 (UTC)

RE: Proposed deletion of Ben Simmons

Ben Simmons is a living person, commonly known to wikipedians as Gogo Praka. This article was created and collaborated on with the permission and help of this person. This person is a county cricketer who has represented the country at certain levels, thus , in my opinion, justifying his page. He, however, was not happy with the outcome and look so together we created a second page titled BEN SIMMONS which was much better and has now been deleted. Hi AdamWimborne.

Can you supply any links to substantial coverage in reliable sources (like a published book, or a profile in a national newspaper) that show Ben Simmons has competed at a senior level? Wikipedia has quite a specific standard for article inclusion, called the general notability guideline, which requires that every article's subject have been covered already by other third-party publications. In cricket, without the provision of sources like that, we don't presume a player to be notable unless he:

• has appeared in at least one major cricket match since 1697 as a player or umpire
• has appeared in at least one ICC World Cup Qualifier match since 2005, or in an ICC Trophy final prior to 2005, as a player or umpire
• has appeared in at least one World Cricket League match of Division Five status or above since 2007 as a player or umpire

If Ben Simmons hasn't reached this standard, and I can't find any evidence that he has, he may not meet be eligible for a Wikipedia article. (Obviously we do have pages for some players who've competed at a lower level, but these all have (or should have) references to the kind of high-quality, in-depth, independent coverage that shows they are notable all the same.)

To answer your second question, the page at BEN SIMMONS was deleted because it failed to demonstrate why the subject would be considered important enough to merit an encyclopedia article. Representing a school and a county B team are accomplishments, but they aren't significant enough to justify encyclopedia coverage by themselves (if we tried to cover every athlete worldwide in all sports who reached these standards, we'd have to add millions of extra pages).

If you're just looking to create a page somewhere on line for Ben Simmons's career, you might want to see our list of alternative outlets, which covers other sites that don't all apply our inclusion rules and would let you create and maintain a page as you wish.

One more note: I'm not sure what you mean by "Gogo Praka"; I don't see any use of those words anywhere on Wikipedia.

Articles can be removed very quickly if they don't show why their subjects are important enough to merit encyclopedia articles. In the long term, to survive in Wikipedia, an article needs to include references to substantial coverage in multiple independent, reliable sources - things like newspaper articles or books talking about why this gaming server would be considered especially significant. (This is the standard we call notability, a term you may have come across on Wikipedia.)

If you're just looking to publicize the server, then Wikipedia is not a good place to do that anyway, but you'll find some useful resources in our list of alternative outlets - there are lots of other sites that don't apply Wikipedia's notability standards and where your content wouldn't be deleted.

GOCE drive invitation

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors The latest GOCE backlog elimination drive is under way! It began on 1 July and so far 18 people have signed up to help us reduce the number of articles in need of copyediting. This drive will give a 50% bonus for articles edited from the GOCE requests page. Although we have cleared the backlog of 2009 articles there are still 3,935 articles needing copyediting and any help, no matter how small, would be appreciated. We are appealing to all GOCE members, and any other editors who wish to participate, to come and help us reduce the number of articles needing copyediting, as well as the backlog of requests. Hi again

Hey, can you help me with structuring things...I am having trouble with the Congenital Dyserythropoietic Anemia page that I created last time. I want to provide links to a CDA Type I page, CDA Type II page ...etc. for all four subtypes, but I am having trouble linking to them. I also want anyone who searches for CDA, CDA I, etc. to be taken to these pages automatically. Can you help with this?

MSU Interview

Dear Gonzonoir,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the communityHERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

• Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
• Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
• All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
• All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
• The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you.
