New Page Patrol newsletter September 2021

Hello Goldsztajn/Archives/2021,

Please join this discussion - there is increase in the abuse of Wikipedia and its processes by POV pushers, Paid Editors, and by holders of various user rights including Autopatrolled. Even our review systems themselves at AfC and NPR have been infiltrated. The good news is that detection is improving, but the downside is that it creates the need for a huge clean up - which of course adds to backlogs.

Copyright violations are also a serious issue. Most non-regular contributors do not understand why, and most of our Reviewers are not experts on copyright law - and can't be expected to be, but there is excellent, easy-to-follow advice on COPYVIO detection here.

At the time of the last newsletter (#25, December 2020) the backlog was only just over 2,000 articles. New Page Review is an official system. It's the only firewall against the inclusion of new, improper pages.

There are currently 706 New Page Reviewers plus a further 1,080 admins, but as much as nearly 90% of the patrolling is still being done by around only the 20 or so most regular patrollers.

If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process or its software.

Various awards are due to be allocated by the end of the year and barnstars are overdue. If you would like to manage this, please let us know. Indeed, if you are interested in coordinating NPR, it does not involve much time and the tasks are described here.

Attempt at a transcluded page...

Hey Goldsztajn -- I've set up the Editathon page, and I made an attempt at transcluding the page 20-Minute Article Assessment page here. Can you advise whether this looks correct (and whether you think it will be helpful to participants)? I was trying to figure out if it's possible to set it up so that editors can quickly access the source page by clicking "edit" on the transcluded section, but that's a little beyond my skills. Hey Alanna the Brave, it all looks excellent! Great work. I made a few tweaks. I'm also adding the invitation to some projects where I've been active. Just one question - the 20-minute pre-assessment is not appearing on the main page of the drive, is that deliberate? For the moment it is just linked, but it's not very prominent. What do you think of placing it as a separate section above article outcomes? Also, I would like to move it to a subpage of Meetup/1 rather than the project page - that way the navigation link at the top redirects to the meet-up and not the project page... is that ok for you? Glad to hear it looks good (and thanks for the tweaks)! Moving the 20-Minute Assessment page to a subpage of Meetup/1 sounds totally fine. I didn't put the 20-minute assessment on the edithathon main page because I worried it was getting too crowded (there's already a ton of text on the main page), but maybe that's not the case. Just to clarify -- are you suggesting placing the transcluded assessment page in a section above "Article Outcomes"? I agree the current links are not very prominent, so if you think making these changes will help participants find and navigate the 20-Minute Assessment area more easily, I'm all for it. Black Monday, Louvre

Hi. Thank you for your comments on Talk:Black Monday (1987) back in May 2020. I'm gonna add one not-too-long (but not too short) paragraph covering the narrative that blames the Louvre Accord for Black Monday. I have found several good sources. Hi Lingzhi.Random, unfortunately, I'm committed to quite a lot for the rest of the year, I won't have time to help. My only comment though regarding my comments at the GAN review, is that I wasn't blaming the Louvre Accord, I was noting it was a factor amongst a number (frankly more symptomatic than causal); the point I was trying to emphasise is the origins of Black Friday have their origins is deeper, long-term macroeconomic issues. Hello, it’s been a while, hope you are in good health. I was thinking of the 1996 Otokoto riots & I was wondering if you can take a second look at it, regarding if or not i should submit it for GA review. The article is getting a little muddy as numerous editors are editing on it, please you have my permission to remove what may be considered irrelevant in the article.
