A kitten for you!

Thanks for helping our Wikibomb 2014! We have made over 70 new pages about Australian women scientists.

Thank you Bellacounihan. It's been really impressive to watch the progress on Twitter and at Category:Wikibomb2014. I hope we can get some of our editors from WikiProject Women scientists to help out too. gobonobo + c 06:39, 14 August 2014 (UTC)

Hi Middayexpress. I'd normally put a note on a talk page, but I wasn't sure which one was most appropriate. I put hatnotes on the articles for Mohammed Noor and Mohamed Noor. I saw your corrections and I just wonder if 'computer scientist' is the best disambiguator for Mohamud Noor. While that was his profession for a few years, he is now executive director of a non-profit community center. I decided to opt for 'politician' only because that is probably what he is best known for. I worry that a reader who was looking for Mohamud Noor that finds themselves on one of the other articles would be unlikely to identify him as a 'computer scientist'. Maybe we could make this moot by creating a disambiguation page for Moham(m)e/ud Noors? gobonobo + c 18:54, 13 August 2014 (UTC)

Hi Gobonobo. While Noor indeed isn't presently a computer scientist, he isn't an officeholder either. He also has a degree in computer science. A disambiguation page for Mohamed/Mohammed would make sense; Mohamud is a different first name, though. Regards, Middayexpress (talk) 19:03, 13 August 2014 (UTC)
Well actually no. He got the degree and retains the knowledge, so I don't think he ever stopped being a computer scientist. But readers who search for him wouldn't necessarily know that he happened to have a degree in the field. For all they know he might be a geneticist or a footballer. I don't think one has to be an officeholder to be a politician. While Mohamud/Maxamuud/Mahmoud are different than Mohammed/Mohamed, the M. Noor names are homophonous and easily confused, so it's reasonable to conclude that a reader might find themselves looking for the name on a disambiguation page for all of these articles. Are you suggesting that the hatnote is unnecessary? Or that we should create a disambiguation page for Mohamed/Mohammed that excludes Mohamud Noor? I don't understand what you want here. gobonobo + c 19:41, 13 August 2014 (UTC)
Here's the definition of politician: "A politician, political leader, or political figure (from Classical Greek πόλις, "polis") is a person who is involved in influencing public policy and decision making." Noor isn't really in a position to do that at the moment, so "computer scientist" is indeed more immediately relevant. Mohamed/Mohammed/Muhammad and Mohamud/Mohamoud are altogether different names, with different etymologies. I bring this up to show that the necessity of the hatnote with regard to the differently named Mohamud is arguable, not just "politician" vs. "computer scientist". Please leave a response if any here (or feel free to delete this userspace post per WP:HUSH). Regards, Middayexpress (talk) 20:00, 13 August 2014 (UTC)
@Middayexpress: You say that Noor isn't a 'politician' because he "isn't really in a position to do that at the moment". And while he isn't currently an officeholder, he just made a highly newsworthy bid for state legislature. If you take a closer look at the definition of politician (I'm assuming we're using the Wikipedia definition here) you will find that it indicates that the term includes people who seek those positions as well as those who have them. I think most political scientists would agree that you don't have to be an elected official to be a politician. But you say that 'computer scientist' is "immediately relevant" even though you previously argued that he wasn't presently a computer scientist. As a school board member, Noor has influenced public policy and decision making. Moreover, his only reason for having an article in the first place is his repeated candidacy for office (in 2010 for school board, as well as in 2011, 2012, and 2014 for state legislature). He is known for being a politician, not for being a computer scientist. Also, I don't think it is that unreasonable to think that people might misspell Mohamud Noor as Mohamed Noor or even Mohammed Noor. While the etymologies are different, the triconsonantal root is the same and the nuance of the pronunciation is probably lost on Western ears.
Since you mentioned WP:HUSH and seem to be unwilling to host a conversation on your talk page, let me just add that I hope I haven't posted anything there that annoys or embarrasses you. If so, it wasn't my intention. I'm certainly willing to keep the conservation here if that's more comfortable for you. gobonobo + c 21:04, 13 August 2014 (UTC)
Ok, cause for a minute there I was under the impression that you perhaps didn't want the conversation here since you removed it when I first pasted it onto your userpage (which is your prerogative). At any rate, though there indeed are exceptions and it could be argued that Noor is a politician, most political scientists do regard a "politician" as an actual active officeholder ("someone who is active in government usually as an elected official"; "a person experienced in the art or science of government; especially: one actively engaged in conducting the business of a government"; "a person engaged in party politics as a profession" [1]). Someone who is no longer in office would thus be a "former politician". Even if we regard Noor's school board position as a political rather than an academic tenure, he secured it only a few months ago. By contrast, he has an actual degree in computer science and worked for many years in information technology for the government. To be honest, I'm not even certain that the whole hatnote with regard to Mohamud is necessary since "Mohamud" is actually a variation of Mahmud rather than the different name Mohamed. The two names do have the same Arabic triconsonantal root of Ḥ-M-D, but then again so do Hamid and Ahmed, among other separate names. Phonologically, the situation is similar to Sarah (given name) vs. Sahra/Zahra (name); they too sound similar but are ultimately different names, with different spellings. References for article on Imidacloprid

Hi there, Gonobo. A couple of years ago you filled in some citations for the article on imidacloprid including a citation supporting a claim that the poison is effective in killing fleas both via contact and when ingested (here). You didn't make the original claim, but you found what looked to be a reference to support it. I've been looking into this, and it looks like we have a problem (unless I am mistaken about something): the citation you found only supports the claim (not being made in the article) that the poison, when consumed, has toxic effects on non-target animals like rats and mice. The primary route to killing fleas, its actual target, is via contact and specifically NOT via ingestion (according to Mehlhorn H, Mencke N, Hansen O. Effects of imidacloprid on adult and larval stages of the flea Ctenocephalides felis after in vivo and in vitro application: a light- and electron-microscopy study. Parasitol Res, 1999, 85:625-637, as available in summary in another article here). I am contacting you to ask if I am misunderstanding something, or if you were just inattentive in your choice of citations supporting a claim... Because it looks to me like the claim is incorrect, wherever it may have come from, and needs to be replaced with the correct information and a correct reference, which I am prepared to do, but not without consulting you first. Can you help me out here? Thanks! KDS4444Talk 07:40, 24 August 2014 (UTC)

@KDS444: Hi. I didn't add that claim or the reference to the article. The link for the reference was already there. It was added here by Tcprosser. I just reformatted the reference. Hope that helps, gobonobo + c 21:27, 24 August 2014 (UTC)

WikiCup 2014 August newsletter

The final of the 2014 WikiCup begins in a few short minutes! Our eight finalists are listed below, along with their placement in Round 4:

  1. Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions), a WikiCup newcomer, finished top of Pool A and was the round's highest scorer. Godot is a featured picture specialist, claiming large numbers of points due to high-quality scans of historical documents, especially banknotes.
  2. Scotland Casliber (submissions) is a WikiCup veteran, having been a finalist every year since 2010. In the semi-final, he was Pool B's highest scorer. Cas's points primarily come from articles on the natural sciences.
  3. Nepal Czar (submissions) was Pool A's runner-up. Czar's points come mostly from content related to independent video games, including both articles and topics.
  4. Oh, better far to live and die / Under the brave black flag I fly... Adam Cuerden (submissions) was Pool B's runner-up. Another featured picture specialist, many of Adam's points come from the restoration of historical media. He has been a WikiCup finalist twice before.
  5. Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions) won the WikiCup in 2012 and 2013, and enters this final as the first wildcard. She focuses on biology-related articles, and has worked on several high-importance articles.
  6. Florida 12george1 (submissions) is the second wildcard. George's points come primarily from meteorology-related articles. This year and last year, George was the first person in the competition to score.
  7. Colorado Sturmvogel 66 (submissions), the third wildcard, was the 2010 champion and a finalist last year. His writes mostly on military history, especially naval history.
  8. Canada Bloom6132 (submissions), the fourth and final wildcard, has participated in previous WikiCups, but not reached any finals. Bloom's points are mostly thanks to did you knows, featured lists and good articles related to sport and national symbols.

We say goodbye to this year's semi-finalists. Herm Matty.007 (submissions), Ohio ThaddeusB (submissions), United States WikiRedactor (submissions), Idaho Figureskatingfan (submissions), Greece Yellow Evan (submissions), Portugal Prism (submissions) and Bartošovice v Orlických horách Cloudz679 (submissions) have all performed well to reach this stage of the competition, and we hope they will all be joining us again next year.

There are two upcoming competitions unrelated to the WikiCup which may be of interest to those who receive this newsletter. The Stub Contest will run through September, and revolves around expanding stub articles, especially high-importance or old stubs. In addition, a proposal has been made for a new competition, the GA Cup, which the organisers plan to run next year. This competition is based on the WikiCup and aims to reduce the good article review backlog.

There is now a thread for brainstorming on how next year's WikiCup competition should work. Please come along and share your thoughts- What works? What doesn't work? What needs changing? Signups for next year's competition will be open soon; we will be in touch. If, at this stage of the competition, you are keen to help the with the WikiCup, please do what you can to participate in review processes. Our finalists will find things much easier if the backlogs at good article candidates, featured article candidates, featured picture candidates and the rest are kept at a minimum. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! But I thought you reverted my comments here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:175.143.232.3#September_2014, where am I supposed to document that that IP is repeatedly vandalizing a page?

Hello Gobonobo, I am pleased to meet you. I have question about non profit I sent to your email. I was unsure about privacy issues. Thank you for your helpSamjam830 (talk) 02:45, 14 September 2014 (UTC)

@Samjam830: Hi. I didn't receive an email from you. Could you try to send it again? gobonobo + c 06:09, 15 September 2014 (UTC)
Hello Gobonobo, Thank you for your reply about not receiving my email. I think I will try talk page.
I am enrolled in a Global Youth Studies Class at Drake University and we have been asked to either edit or create a page for our class. My question is; Do you think it would be appropriate for me to create a page about a non profit that I work for? The program is a community Restorative Justice program based in West Des Moines Iowa it is called West Des Moines Youth Justice Initiative. My goals would be to share information on the program from newspaper articles, graduate research, award received etc. The page would also tie into restorative justice, juvenile delinquency, youth court and other areas of interest and concern. Any input you could provide would be great. Thank youSamjam830 (talk) — Preceding undated comment added 19:01, 16 September 2014 (UTC)
@Samjam830: You definitely should not create an article for the non-profit you work for. While your non-profit may be perfectly notable and deserving of an article, creating an article for a place you work for is strongly discouraged by the conflict of interest guideline (see WP:COI). I would suggest trying to find a broader topic along the lines of restorative justice or youth courts. As yours is a project for a global youth studies class, you might also consider an organization or topic that is not related to the US. gobonobo + c 19:25, 16 September 2014 (UTC)

Also, if you see a woman writer with enough articles on her works to require a navbox, let me know. Me, Sadads, and TonyTheTiger have done so many, it's hard to find writers in need of them. Tony was doing navboxes on individual works a while back, so I'll have to see about finding the ones on works by women and project tagging those. INeverCry 07:38, 17 September 2014 (UTC)

Re: Cordelia Stanwood

Thanks for your kind words. Actually, I consider my draft article quite a long way from being ready to go live in mainspace. Stanwood is best known as an ornithologist but that section of the article currently consists of only a few notes to myself. I'm working on the structure and wording of the section off-line in a text editor. I find it difficult to remain neutral and encyclopedic. Each time I revisit my off-line notes and draft, I cut much of what I wrote as being too much detail. Next is her photography. Again, my problem is what's appropriate and how much detail. Most references are full of quips about how she enlisted boys to carry the heavy equipment and plates into the swamps and about her always wearing long skirts with waders as footwear underneath. There's also the loss and then rediscovery of the original photographic plates; how much of that story belongs in the encyclopedia? Conservation activism and an intro/explanation of her writing for popular periodicals needs to be added, too.

For me, writing Wikipedia is a foul weather activity. Most of my days are now spent outdoors in my gardens, bird trails and with grandkids. I'll get back to my writing about dead (and living) ornithologists once the garden is put to bed for the winter. Most of the birds have already started their southern migration and the last of the residents are ending their breeding season. Grandkids are back in school, no longer hanging out with grandpa. Even though I haven't made a live edit to the draft since early spring, I haven't forgotten or abandoned Stanwood. I'll be back at it when winter and shorter days drive me inside. I would like to see the Stanwood article featured on the main page so I don't want to move it to mainspace until it's essentially complete and suitable for DYK.

If you'd like to help flesh out the article, jump right in. I doubt that edit conflicts will happen and I don't believe in ownership, even of a userspace draft. The Richardson thesis at [2] is a thorough bio but written from a feminist POV. It's a great source for adding more. I purchased all the dead-tree books used as references from used bookstores (and will sell them once the article is live). Some of the on-line sources are contradictory (grumble) so I chose the older print sources as most reliable. The Richardson thesis is consistent and well sourced so I've depended on it as the most reliable.

Thanks again, DocTree (ʞlɐʇ·ʇuoɔ) Join WER 14:59, 17 September 2014 (UTC) PS: Post any reply here. I'll watch your page for a bit.

@Doctree: Thank you for following up. I'm impressed with the effort you're dedicating to Stanwood's article and hope that you do save the effort for the foul weather. If your garden is anything like mine right now, you have more eggplant, tomatoes and squash than you know what to do with. Based on the quality and sourcing that I've seen so far, I wouldn't be surprised if you have a GA for Stanwood in short order. I'll take a look at the Richardson thesis—I'm surprised to see such a detailed account. gobonobo + c 21:44, 17 September 2014 (UTC)

@Hatigges: Hi there. Statutory rape laws are of course going to vary from country to country. I recommend that you make searches of both your university library and online databases such like JSTOR. The best sources will probably be recent journal articles and books. A search of google books/scholar brought up several sources that seemed promising. Here are a couple:
You might want also to check out the Wikipedia articles for virgin cleansing myth, ages of consent in Africa, and sexual violence in South Africa. They may have sources that you could make use of. I hope that helps. Let me know if you have any other questions. gobonobo + c 15:13, 13 September 2014 (UTC)
Thank you very much for taking the time in sending me in the right direction. I will certainly follow up on your suggestions. Honestly, I did not respond sooner because I was unsure of exactly how to respond. With that, I hope this message reaches the appropriate destination and finds you well.Hatigges (talk) 23:02, 17 September 2014 (UTC)

Disambiguation link notification for September 18

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Charles Gaines (artist), you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Musical score. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Thanks for the image of Margaret Stock

Hi, thanks for uploading an image of Margaret Stock. I did not realize the image in the Macarther website was under creative commons license. That makes things so easy! Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 14:03, 22 September 2014 (UTC)

@Dwaipayan: Thank you for creating her article! There are a couple more images of Stock over at Commons if you'd like to change the image out. gobonobo + c 14:07, 22 September 2014 (UTC)
wow, that's interesting. Already so many images! No, I don't think I am going to change the image. This one is just fine.--Dwaipayan (talk) 14:14, 22 September 2014 (UTC)

American Craft Council

Hi Gobonobo - I notice you added a very nice infobox to American Craft Council. Since you have given latitude and longitude, I wonder if it would also be appropriate to add the address that is associated with them. I do not know it.--Foobarnix (talk) 23:27, 30 September 2014 (UTC)

Sure thing. gobonobo + c 23:30, 30 September 2014 (UTC)

I'm writing to let you know that the logo which had been placed on Thefederalist.com apparently belongs to a different web site. See http://web.archive.org/web/19981111191626/http://www.federalist.com/ -- Federalist.com was using that in 1998, whereas Thefederalist.com did not begin until 2013 (and uses a different logo -- see http://thefederalist.com/). Hence, it may no longer even be appropriate to keep File:Thefederalist.gif in Wikipedia as it would no longer be used in an article and thus no longer be subject to fair use criteria. --Metropolitan90 (talk) 16:10, 2 October 2014 (UTC)

Thanks Metropolitan90. I think I've got the right one now at File:Federalist logo.png. gobonobo + c 00:09, 3 October 2014 (UTC)

Mike Dukakis

Hi- I thought that my adding the issue of the yellow barrels to Mike Dukakis's page helped, though the fact is the epitome of trivial, flesh him out as a unique & sometime quirky political figure. I'm sure I could dig up a citation if that is the issue. Anyway, new at this, apologies if not using talk page correctly.Innisfree4thee (talk) 17:52, 2 October 2014 (UTC)

Hi Innisfree4thee. I undid your edit where you added a claim that Dukakis was remembered for "a quixotic quest to eliminate the use off yellow barrels as highway markers" because it was unsourced. Minor incidents from people's careers such as that one are usually not added to articles, as they provide undue weight (see WP:UNDUE/WP:BLP). gobonobo + c 00:40, 3 October 2014 (UTC)

Content dispute

Why are you removing my edits? For Feminism and Fairness (talk) 06:22, 8 October 2014 (UTC)

Dude, stop changing correct grammar back to incorrect grammar. For Feminism and Fairness (talk) 06:24, 8 October 2014 (UTC)

For Feminism and Fairness (talk · contribs), and which past editor are you? You clearly aren't new to editing Wikipedia, with the whole "Content dispute" title and signing your username on your first post. No need to reply on my talk page; I can simply check back here for your reply. Flyer22 (talk) 06:28, 8 October 2014 (UTC)
I've edited as an ip for a long time. Also, please actually ANSWER MY QUESTION For Feminism and Fairness (talk) 06:30, 8 October 2014 (UTC)
For Feminism and Fairness (talk · contribs), I don't buy your explanation. Also, you didn't ask me a question. My username is Flyer22. You asked Gobonobo a question. Flyer22 (talk) 06:32, 8 October 2014 (UTC)
I've editing as an ip long enough to know that you should not be writing here as you are not Gobonobo. Also, if you guys BOTH don't provide a explanation i will take you to WP:ANI (yeah i know about ani as well) For Feminism and Fairness (talk) 06:33, 8 October 2014 (UTC)
You're probably a man, judging by your stupidity. All men are assholes... For Feminism and Fairness (talk) 06:36, 8 October 2014 (UTC)
@For Feminism and Fairness: I reverted edits where you listed Weekly Shōnen Jump as a pornographic magazine. It does not fit that description. Your trolling is rather obvious, and not welcome here. gobonobo + c 06:39, 8 October 2014 (UTC)
Fucking male, I'm not fucking trolling you woman-hating PIG For Feminism and Fairness (talk) 06:40, 8 October 2014 (UTC)
[ WP:Edit conflict ]: Gobonobo does not mind me posting on his user talk page. Also see WP:Talk; we have leeway on our talk pages, but we don't WP:Own them. But something tells me that you are a WP:Troll; look at this edit you made, for example? You're simply a past WP:Disruptive editor come back to stir up trouble, particularly to make women and/or feminism look bad. And, yes, I know that some people (especially some men) think that women and/or feminism are already bad. WP:Sockpuppets rarely fool me; I usually spot them instantly. But, yes, go mention this "Gobonobo and Flyer22" matter at WP:ANI; it will be fun. You probably also know that I'm female. Flyer22 (talk) 06:43, 8 October 2014 (UTC)
That is true http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2014/aug/6/michelle-obama-women-are-smarter-than-men/ even fucking Obama admits it. You are just a filthy male pretending to be a woman and an insult to Feminism, the only reason women are not dominating the world and fucking forcing those fucking male PIGS to work is because of women like you who think we're all "equal" For Feminism and Fairness (talk) 06:46, 8 October 2014 (UTC)
LOL, there are editors who can "testify" that I'm female because they've had visual proof of that. As for you? Not so much. LOL, you are so transparent. Time to ignore you now. Flyer22 (talk) 06:50, 8 October 2014 (UTC)

A tag has been placed on File:Belva Plain.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a non-free file with a clearly invalid licensing tag; or it otherwise fails some part of the non-free content criteria. If you can find a valid tag that expresses why the file can be used under the fair use guidelines, please replace the current tag with that tag. If no such tag exists, please add the {{Non-free fair use}} tag, along with a brief explanation of why this constitutes fair use of the file. If the file has been deleted, you can re-upload it, but please ensure you place the correct tag on it.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Why were those bad edits? they referenced the stuff being cited. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 190.181.14.145 (talk) 22:45, 14 October 2014 (UTC)

Hello 190.181.14.145. Are you referring to this edit or this one? Generally speaking, citations need to be attributed to reliable sources. gobonobo + c 22:52, 14 October 2014 (UTC)

Betsy Ross; Thanks

Thanks for restoring the original version. I tried to accommodate the changes recently made by another user but in fact just reverting them was the better course since the point is more appropriately made in the old version. Donner60 (talk) 21:49, 14 October 2014 (UTC)

Yeah, while I suppose it was probably a good faith edit, the added sentence seemed redundant to the one that followed. gobonobo + c 22:01, 14 October 2014 (UTC)
Yes. I agree. So just reverting the new edit was the best handling. Donner60 (talk) 03:04, 15 October 2014 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Globophobia

The article Globophobia has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

The article doesn't cite any reliable sources, and there is no evidence that this is an actual medical term.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.
