Hey all!

So, big news this week - on Tuesday, we ramped up to 5 percent of articles :). There's been a lot more feedback (pardon the pun) as I'm sure you've noticed, and to try and help we've scheduled a large number of office hours sessions, including one this evening at 22:00 UTC in the #wikimedia-office connect channel, and another at 01:00 UTC for the aussies amongst us :). The image is being used on Wikipedia under a fair use rationale and is from the Nobel Foundation's website (found here). As far as I know, the image is not in the public domain. Genre advice

Hi. Since you're a member of Wikiproject hip hop, I thought i'd ask you about this. Is the former "electronic hip hop" an appropriate way of linking, or would "hip hop" be the more appropriate/ correct choice for an infobox's genre? Dan56 (talk) 03:50, 30 July 2012 (UTC)

I'm not necessarily an authority on hip hop genres or their application in song infoboxes, but I think Minaj's song would most aptly be described as electro-hop (not to be confused with electro (music)). As electro-hop doesn't have an article, a piped link such as [[hip hop|electro-hop]] might be an option for the time being. Just wanted to thank you for adding all the photos over the last little bit. Impressed with the Hall of Fame of Delaware Women that you did. Putting these Halls of Fame into a list, and creating some articles, has been a bit of a window into the soul of a given geographical area. I have been really fascinated by the women in Alaska. Particularly the female pilots, and the women of indigenous ancestry on the lists. The movies got it wrong - they weren't all in dance halls seducing gold miners. So many on that list didn't originate in Alaska, that it's like some force drawing those women (and men) up to Alaska to make their own rules. Maile66 (talk) 18:56, 27 July 2012 (UTC)

Hi Maile66. I was inspired by your example and work on the halls of fame. Working on Delaware's got me interested in the Silent Sentinels and the suffrage movement in general. My only disappointment is that every state doesn't have a hall of fame. I look forward to creating articles for some of those red links (as well as the requested articles at the Women's History project). By the way, your mention of the Silent Sentinels. Have you seen Iron Jawed Angels? It's about Alice Paul and those women, among other things. I've tried to imagine what it must have been like, emotionally, at the exact moment when they learned they had the vote. One moment, they're just some man's property. Yeah I just went and saw that after my interest was piqued in their protest. Even after they secured Congressional approval, they had to get 2/3 of the states to agree as well, so I imagine it was frustratingly slow. One of my favorite all-time movies. But I realized after I did the article on Minnie Fisher Cunningham, that Cunningham was very much an integral part of what happened, and was not in the movie. I am not alone...ahh. Sometimes we gotta wonder on Wikipedia where nobody knows who else is on the same topic. I got into the hall of fames inspired by the Alabama Women's Hall of Fame, and it was easy for me to find information to create the one on Texas. From there, it just kind of went on. And it's a great way to find articles about women that need creating. When I created Template: United States Women's Halls of Fame, I searched state-by-state trying to find what is in the states. You and I may have maxed out on this. I do know there are a couple that make it somewhat difficult to do a list on them, because they don't have accompanying information on the women they inducted: Oregon Women of Achievement Hall of Fame and Louisiana Women's Hall of Fame. Already existing is the stubbie Ohio Women's Hall of Fame, but when you look at the Source, you can understand why it never got expanded. I have the feeling that other states might have these, but they just aren't showing up online. Can you imagine that California would not have one? Or New York? I'm glad you brought this up. I had some difficulty creating Delaware because they only had the master list of the women. I searched for them separately, but was unable to find any details on several and still don't have the induction years for many of them. I'm working on Ohio in this sandbox and the table should be ready fairly soon. There are other Hall of Fame lists I found that are not state-sponsored, but could be helpful for finding women that could use articles. There's the Georgia Women of Achievement and the Central City Business and Professional Women has a Kentucky Women's Hall of Fame. There are also some smaller regional Halls of Fame - San Diego County, California has its own Women's Hall of Fame. Gobōnobo + c 23:02, 29 July 2012 (UTC)
How did you get all those names in one place for the Ohio list? All I see when I go to the Ohio state page is a grid where you have to keep forwarding every few names. OK, we maybe could start working with each other here. I just found a couple of sources, and the year of induction, on the Delaware H of F for Roxana Cannon Arsht. I'll keep looking at the Delaware list and see what I can come up with. I just completed the Maryland Women's Hall of Fame the other day. I keep a sandbox of useful links and things Here. Some of those links and tools will definitely come in handy. I pulled the Ohio names ten at a time and pasted them into a document. I'm thinking I'll try to get in touch with the Delaware Commission for Women and ask them if they can provide the induction dates and brief descriptions for the ones we're missing. I've been looking at what you found at the Georgia Women of Achievement. I believe that's their official hall of fame, given what it says under "About". I'll think about Georgia for a while. "Enjoy" is not exactly my motivation on these. It's more like filling the need to put an order to topic, so that anyone can then address whether or not to create articles in that US state. Tedious, but a necessary Step One Right now, I have some RL priorities, so Georgia will happen whenever either of us gets to it. You do great work, by the way. Tip for you

Let's see if I can get this to link correctly: Sandbox version of Maryland. This really is subjective, depending on how you work best. But I found it a time saver in the long haul to create the template on the same page, at the same time, that I'm creating the H of F list. As I create each name, I copy it down to the template. Tedious, but it saves flipping back and forth to another page to create the template. And then after I've done an eyeball comparison at the end, just move the two to their own pages to create. I think I do something similar. I basically just borrowed your template and plugged in new values. For Ohio I added a county column. I have a vague inclination to redo the Michigan H of F to separate out the birth-death date, make the area of achievement column more specific, and maybe eliminate the contemporary/historical and "group" columns. We're approaching the beginning of 2012's final round. Pool A sees Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions) as the leader, with 300 points being awarded for the featured article Bivalvia, and Pool B sees Conradh na Gaeilge Grapple X (submissions) in the lead, with 10 good articles, and over 35 articles eligible for good topic points. Pool A sees New York City Muboshgu (submissions) in second place with a number of articles relating to baseball, while Pool B's Minnesota Ruby2010 (submissions) follows Grapple X, with a variety of contributions including the high-scoring, high-importance featured article on the 2010 film Pride & Prejudice. Ruby2010, like Grapple X, also claimed a number of good topic points; despite this, not a single point has been claimed for featured topics in the contest so far. The same is true for featured portals.

Currently, the eighth-place competitor (and so the lowest scorer who would reach the final round right now) has scored 332, more than double the 150 needed to reach the final round last year. In 2010, however, 430 was the lowest qualifying score. In this competition, we have generally seen scores closer to those in 2010 than those in 2011. Let's see what kind of benchmark we can set for future competitions! AFT5 newsletter

Hey again all :). So, some big news, some small news, some good news, some bad news!

On the "big news" front; we've now deployed AFT5 on to 10 percent of articles, This is pretty awesome :). On the "bad news", however, it looks like we're having to stop at 10 percent until around September - there are scaling issues that make it dangerous to deploy wider. Happily, our awesome features engineering team is looking into them as we speak, and I'm optimistic that the issues will be resolved.

For both "small" and "good" news; we've got another office hours session. This one is tomorrow, at 22:00 UTC in #wikimedia-office connect - I appreciate it's a bit late for Europeans, but I wanted to juggle it so US east coasters could attend if they wanted :). Hope to see you all there!

I don't know if you can come up with for an image for Leonie von Meusebach–Zesch, but it would be great if you might. Along the lines of Alaska itself creating some larger-than-life characters, I got sidetracked reading about Leonhard Seppala, and wondered why Robert Redford (in his younger days) never made a movie, starring himself, as Seppala. Redford would have made a great Seppala. I've uploaded File:Leonie von Meusebach–Zesch circa 1904.jpg and sent an email to the Alaska Hall of Fame to see if they can provide any more details on that particular photo. I want to be sure I'm using the correct license there. I imagine her autobiography has more photographs, but details on when they were taken and by whom as well as when/if they were published all go into determining licensing.   • Thank you! I'm sitting here with a library copy of Leonie's book, which I used as a basis for this article. That photo is on the back cover. This is not a book that gives details on photo copyrights, but just says the contents are Copyright 2011 by The Jane G. Troutman Family Trust. The family/publisher contact info is at this link: Book contact info.. It has an email address. The Hall of Fame is a little loose on some facts (her birthdate, claiming her mother was a duchess, other details). You might find the book people a better source on the copyright issue. Other photos in the book would not be so clear for the article, except perhaps the cover photo. It's the same one as Here, but with more definition. There's a luscious photo of Seppala and his Husky in there.
  • Go ahead and nominate for DYK if you like. The reason I didn't, is because it's such a long article. This is one of the most fascinating women I've ever read about. Hi Gobonobo. Just wanted to say thanks for adding the image to the Mel Powell Wiki. Can I ask some advice? Do you usually have pretty good luck licensing the images the way you set that one up? I've had hit & miss luck over the years and honestly find some of the rules & restrictions a real confusing headache at times. It's so frustrating to go through all the uploading, put the image in a Wiki and then have it deleted. If the non-free rationale and wording you used on Mel works pretty well I might pull a "monkey see, monkey do" and copy the jist of it for some I want to upload. Hi Sector001. If you're going to upload images of people using fair use rationales, be sure you're familiar with the non-free content criteria (NFCC). You'll need to be sure that your upload satisfies all ten criteria there. Editors will sometimes interpret these criteria differently and request a review. Images from the Associated Press, Corbis, Getty, and newspaper file photos are often interpreted as violating NFCC#2. Understanding transformation and fair use helps, but isn't necessary.
The sort of rationale I used for Mel Powell wouldn't work for a living person and wouldn't work if there were any freely licensed images available. Always check for free images first (at the very least using a tool like the Free Image Search Tool; though a more thorough check is preferred, usually determined by the subject and time frame). Fair use files are also made redundant when editors upload free versions. While it's not possible that the entirety of Wikipedia be covered under the GFDL, limiting the amount of non-free content minimizes legal exposure and makes a greater portion of Wikipedia free. Also be aware that fair use files uploaded locally will only be usable on the English Wikipedia. I hope that helps. Good luck and let me know if you need any help or run in to any problems.
