== File:Ashridge House - geograph.org.uk - 1568926.jpg ==

Some while ago (last September, actually) you added the above image to A Handful of Dust, as a more appropriate example of Gothic Revival architecture than the Lancing College Chapel. At the time I agreed; subsequently (I move slowly in such matters) I've become less certain. Ashridge House was built in what Waugh approvingly calls the "pre-Ruskin" phase of the Gothic revival, but the fictional Hetton was built much later, in "the worst possible 1860 style", and is stated as being "devoid of interest". So, quite unlike Ashridge. I'm rather inclined, regretfully, to delete the Ashridge image, but as a courtesy I thought I'd consult you first. Brianboulton (talk) 19:23, 18 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Is Oakley Court, scene of many a Hammer film, hideous enough? Otherwise we have good pics of Carlton Towers, but that is Pugin 1840s and not without "interest", though closer - they did the film there. Johnbod (talk) 20:20, 18 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Waugh was a social climbing, pompous little oik, but if he knew his Perpendicular from his his Decorated is unknown, so please have whatever you feel was closest to Waugh's mind. Giano (talk) 19:50, 19 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Ettington Park Hotel ?? It's the right date and is a remodelling of a much earlier house in a very High style. I love it, but then I love Oakley Court where I once arranged a stag dinner that had some elements of Hammer Horror about it. KJP1 (talk) 11:53, 28 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Exterior shots look good. The Italianate staircase (the only interior shot we have) would no doubt have raised Waugh's ire. The hotel link at bottom is dead btw. Johnbod (talk) 13:36, 28 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I think it fits the bill for jaw-dropping style and history. But Brian may prefer Carlton Towers which was, as you say, used in the film, or indeed the horrors of Oakley Court. I've updated the website.KJP1 (talk) 14:01, 28 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
When I read the book, I somehow had the impression that the house was seriously massive; much larger than either Oakley of Ettington, that's why I went for Ashridge. Carlton Towers is closer to my impression, and also has the clock tower which ensured that guests never slept. Thoresby Hall, to my mind, also has all the requirements. Giano (talk) 08:35, 29 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
If this is a game we can all play, can I nominate Adare Manor? I can imagine Waugh's lip curling at "it now includes a golf club and it served as the judge's house for Sharon Osbourne and Louis Walsh on The X Factor". Scarisbrick Hall might fit the bill as well, although it's a little too small. ‑ Iridescent 09:03, 29 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
No Iridescent, Adare looks far too nice and pleasing. Think big and monstrous, Scarisbrick looks perfect. Giano (talk) 17:31, 29 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
"Nice and pleasing"? To me, Adare looks like the offspring of the mating of the Glasgow University Main Building and a Soviet power station. ‑ Iridescent 23:12, 29 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
All architecture has something pleasing about it Iridescent; sometimes one just has to look a little harder to find it. Adare looks to have some very nice Gothic features there and some tricky bits of structural design - whoever designed it knew what they were doing. I think it's quite accomplished. Giano (talk) 16:33, 30 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Cumbernauld Town Centre
"All architecture has something pleasing about it"—I take it you've never visited Cumbernauld? ‑ Iridescent 15:45, 31 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Funnily enough, no, I haven't. There is a certain je ne sais quoi about it though, isn't there. Somebody had some fun designing it though. It probably looked very exciting at the time - sort of Brutalism meets the Wombles. Giano (talk) 17:58, 31 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I'd really like to know what Giano can wax lyrical about the Brooklands estate on Jaywick, then. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 16:33, 22 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Philip Hepworth[edit]

You will never believe who took this photograph!

Hi Giano. An article I wrote today is about an architect and I though you would be a good person to ask for advice. Would you have time to have a look and see what you think? The article is Philip Hepworth. If you like solving mysteries, there is also the following: (i) which birth year is correct? and (ii) did he work on Trowbridge Town Hall? The de-wiki article claims this, but I think it is wrong and sources are confusing this with the (Wiltshire) County Town Hall (in Trowbridge). I am tempted to go and photograph the Lloyds Bank in Southwark as an example of his work, but that might be going too far... (despite carefully looking at the pictures from Southwark on Commons, it seems no-one has bothered to photograph the Lloyds Bank yet). Carcharoth (talk) 00:18, 7 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry Carcharoth I'm awaying from home - and still am, therefore I only have access to what little information is on the internet - the same as everyone other. So can't be much help. Giano (talk) 10:26, 16 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
No problem. Thanks for the reply and enjoy being away! (Hopefully it is a holiday of some kind.) Carcharoth (talk) 10:27, 16 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Hope you are having a ball. I just got back from the North of Highlands Campground on Cape Cod. Lovely place. We managed to secure a beach fire permit for August 12, the peak night of the Persid Meteor Shower. It was very ideal to look northeast from the beach. The meteors were coming from a point in the sky about 30 degrees above the horizon (at 11pm), about one per minute. Quite impressive. Jehochman Talk 14:32, 16 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  • My nephew is an extremely busy and important man; you can't expect him to keep checking his emails every five minutes like an excited teenager on heat. However, since you ask, my whole family has joined me an extended cruise aboard Scrotum IV around the Mediterranean's sun kissed islands. We will be picking up mail when we reach Zakynthos later today. The Lady Catherine de Burgh (talk) 09:17, 19 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Dyrham Park[edit]

Hi, I'm just expanding (and providing some references to) a largely unreferenced article on Dyrham Park. If you had any interest or sources and could help with the architectural description that would be great. I'm having particular issues with the east and west fronts which are different eras and by different architects.— Rod talk 11:01, 27 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you Rod, sorry for the delay in getting back to you, but I am now returnedinng for a few days. I do know Dyrham and visited it last year under its scaffolding - fascinating place. I have the NT guide book and one or two other books which may be of uses. Tell me what wants referencing and I'll try to find one. Will take a look later when I have dealt with all the ridiculous rubbish going on below. Quite frankly having to wade into arguments with useless waste of spaces such as User:Kelly really is discouraging to trying to create content. Giano (talk) 11:43, 10 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks - no rush. I'm having problems getting my head around (and therefore explaining in the article) the development from the old tudor house to adding the west & east ranges at different periods. Since I wrote this I've acquired a copy of the NT handbook which is basically a walk though the rooms and their decorations, but does have a nice cutaway diagram at the front. I'm also not sure the picture captions of the east and west fronts match the descriptions.— Rod talk 11:51, 10 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

File permission problem with File:Rudge.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Rudge.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, there is no proof that the creator of the file has agreed to release it under the given license.

If you are the copyright holder for this media entirely yourself but have previously published it elsewhere (especially online), please either

  • make a note permitting reuse under the CC-BY-SA or another acceptable free license (see this list) at the site of the original publication; or
  • Send an email from an address associated with the original publication to permissions-en@wikimedia.org, stating your ownership of the material and your intention to publish it under a free license. You can find a sample permission letter here. If you take this step, add {{OTRS pending}} to the file description page to prevent premature deletion.

If you did not create it entirely yourself, please ask the person who created the file to take one of the two steps listed above, or if the owner of the file has already given their permission to you via email, please forward that email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org.

If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:File copyright tags#Fair use, and add a rationale justifying the file's use on the article or articles where it is included. See Wikipedia:File copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have provided evidence that their copyright owners have agreed to license their works under the tags you supplied, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Files lacking evidence of permission may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. You may wish to read Wikipedia's image use policy. The above harassment[edit]

The easiest way of responding to the above stupidity to restore all of these images to the articles for which I uploaded them. This I shall be doing. Giano (talk) 12:47, 11 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I would be very upset to see File:Rudge.jpg lost. It was almost certainly taken as a publicity shot or somesuch and there's no reason to doubt the 1915 date. I don't suppose we can get Kelly to reconsider? Victoria (tk) 18:43, 11 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Olga is now suitably attired in a FUR, so she is safe to appear publicly in polite society (i.e mainspace) but with her stylish new FUR one never knows whether or not she'll be asked to vacate play space (ie. sandboxes). Wikipedia has gone quite mad[edit]

Now one cannot even upload an architectural image of a 180-year-old-staircase in a public building in London, without some zealot trying to delete it [1]. Quite, quite mad. Giano (talk) 17:41, 20 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I seem to recall I took a photo of my bookshelf just to illustrate some guideline page about reliable sources (the idea being that paper-based sources are often orders of magnitude better than online ones) and in about ten minutes somebody nominated it for deletion because of a couple of insignificantly small photos that happened to be on one the spines. Reverting my comment on WT:GGTF?[edit]

Hi, Giano. You seem to have removed my comment on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Countering systemic bias/Gender gap task force? Why? --GRuban (talk) 13:24, 27 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

This happens more often than you think --RexxS (talk) 17:41, 27 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
That's very odd. Something similar happened yesterday [2]. However, when your comment was removed at 13:19 today, I was eating a very nice lunch in a restaurant in London and not logged into Wikipedia. I'm sure no one can have guessed my very unusual password, but some odd things do seem to happen on this site. Giano (talk) 14:12, 27 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I would change that password anyways, and run a Malware Bytes Anti-Malware (free download) scan on your computer. Delete anything that's found. Jehochman Talk 14:25, 27 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Very odd. Where do I obtain this anti malware thing, I am very suspicious of downloading anything. Also why is my watchlist suddenly showing me thinks that need reviewing, that's never happened before until this afternoon. Giano (talk) 14:27, 27 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, Giano. I think Jehochman's advice is a good idea. I hope it stops the mysterious reversions. My sympathies; if that were happening from my account, I'd be really worried. --GRuban (talk) 14:32, 27 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I'm very paranoid about downloads, but this one is safe. Jehochman Talk 14:37, 27 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Downloaded and running it now. Password also changed; however, this has all happened before some months ago and - same sort of thing, random reverts. Shame the damn gremlin never wants to write a FA and credit me instead. Giano (talk) 15:00, 27 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps a cat walking on a keyboard while you're away eating lunch? --Floquenbeam (talk) 16:00, 27 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I hate cats and they hate me! It's a mutual loathing society. I'm also deeply suspicious of men that like cats too. I remember my father telling me, never to trust a little man or a cat-loving man. I suppose that's politically incorrect these days, but I've always found it to be very true. I wonder if there's any scientific research into the theory. Giano (talk) 17:35, 27 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
A small dog then? rodent? parakeet? child? cleaning woman dusting the keyboard? I'm trying to help; no doubt your many enemies are plotting a "Giano's account has been compromised and must be blocked indefinitely" ANI thread as we speak.... (but I am a man who likes cats, so what do I know?) --Floquenbeam (talk) 17:41, 27 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I have always had my doubts about these so called "compromised" accounts as in my experience those caught in "compromising" situations are generally having a high old time and enjoying their compromisation. Or in Wikipedian situations are merely people who have just got plain drunk or had to be carted off to the loony bin, as I am neither, and my compromisations just seem to be an odd random revert, I should think it's just a glitch in the system, which, by comparison, is very dull indeed. Giano (talk) 19:09, 27 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
It has happened again [3]; I really don't think my account has been hacked, and Ivanvector (for some long forgotten reason) is on my watch list. So has anybody any idea what could be going on. I am not a drunk and I'm not suffering from amnesia, but am clearly doing something that I'm not aware of. Suggestions please. Giano (talk) 19:08, 3 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
That was only 20 minutes ago; you're sure you didn't have your watchlist open? --Floquenbeam (talk) 19:12, 3 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I may have done, but that doesn't mean I was randomly clicking on it. Giano (talk) 20:01, 3 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Of course you weren't, but were you using one of those jump-about-y handheld devices? It's common that people revert the wrong thing on those. Reverting something above or below the edit you intended on your watchlist used to be known as "fat-finger syndrome", but on touch-screens I do believe you don't even need to misclick or click fatly at all — the interface is liable to give itself a shake as you click, and you won't see it happen. I recommend always looking at your edits after you make them, to make sure your phone or whatever didn't make a different one instead. (I've stopped using my IPad for Wikipedia. Too bloody fiddly.) Bishonen | talk 20:11, 3 November 2016 (UTC).[reply]
There is a line of code you can add to your common.js file that removes the "rollback" link from your watchlist. I use it for the reasons Bish describes above; I was accidentally rolling people back once or twice a day. Let me know if that interests you. --Floquenbeam (talk) 20:18, 3 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
It may be more useful just to require confirmation before carrying out the rollback. Any of the three scripts mentioned at Wikipedia:Rollback #User scripts would do the job, but the last one only works on the watchlist, so is the most specific. I'm sure Floq would install it for you if you wanted, Excellency. --RexxS (talk) 20:59, 3 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that seems like a good idea, if Floquenbeam knows how to do it. I don't edit on the iPad very often and never on the phone; usually from a desktop so I don't really understand how these reverts are happening at all - especially as one of them happened when I wasn't even logged in. Giano (talk) 17:43, 4 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Giano, I've added RexxS's recommended script to your monobook.js page. Keep a few things in mind: (a) I have the admin bit, so I can access your monobook.js page, but that does not mean I am competent or understand how all this stuff works. I hope it works, but make no guarantees. (b) You are still using monobook, right? Like all civilized Wikipedia users? Not that horrible newfangled "vector" thing? (c) Apparently you'll need to do one of the following to "bypass your browser's cache" (don't ask me): "Internet Explorer: hold down the Ctrl key and click the Refresh or Reload button. Firefox: hold down the Shift key while clicking Reload (or press Ctrl-Shift-R). Google Chrome and Safari users can just click the Reload button." (d) When you've done this, try to rollback this edit from your watchlist, and we'll see if it works. --Floquenbeam (talk) 17:53, 4 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
No, it just lets me rollback the same as ever. Giano (talk) 18:19, 4 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, same with me. It gives me the confirmation box, but then goes ahead and does rollback anyway after a 3 second delay. @RexxS: help? --Floquenbeam (talk) 18:21, 4 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Floquenbeam: I think that the devs have been messing about with the 'importscript' function, so I tend to just paste the code instead. It works fine for me using what you see in [[User:RexxS/monobook.js]. Could you undo the line importScript('User:Zvn/confirmwatchlistrollback.js'); in User:Giano/monobook.js and replace it with the following please?
/*
* Will pop-up a confirmation dialog when rollback link is clicked from Watchlist.
* Hit the "cancel" button if you had clicked Rollback accidentally and the edit will not be reverted.
* 'User:Zvn/confirmwatchlistrollback.js');
*/
if(mw.config.get("wgCanonicalSpecialPageName")==="Watchlist") jQuery(function($){
	$(".mw-rollback-link a").click(function(event){
		if(confirm("Are you sure you want to rollback this edit?")) return;
	  event.preventDefault();
	});
});
Let me know if that still doesn't work and I'll see if there's something else gone wrong. Cheers --RexxS (talk) 18:51, 4 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I'll try, just in case the Gods smile on Giano more than me, but it didn't work for me just now; there's a delay but the rollback goes through whether or not I confirm. Giano, try again, and remember to do the cache purging thing. --Floquenbeam (talk) 18:57, 4 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
How long is the delay? --RexxS (talk) 19:00, 4 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, I misspoke, got confused. The delay was before; now that I copied the code directly, it doesn't do it automatically anymore, but it does rollback whether I hit "continue" OR "cancel". --Floquenbeam (talk) 19:07, 4 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
That's baffling. I've tried it using Chrome, Firefox, Opera and IE11 and it cancels the action every time I press cancel. I'll try to see where else the problem might be. --RexxS (talk) 19:48, 4 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Amazing, I think it is working. Thank you very much. Giano (talk) 20:37, 4 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
The Gods do indeed smile on you, Excellency. I now think it's Floq's cache. Maybe it will work for him later when it's settled down. --RexxS (talk) 20:50, 4 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I have no idea, I haven't looked at your page in years. Can someone remove the rollback thing from my account; let's see if that solves the problem. I hardly ever use it knowingly anyway.
No, you leave it to mrs Catherine Rollbacker-de Burgh, don't you? I can't believe I found how to remove the rollbacker right, but I did. It's gone. Bishonen | talk 11:39, 13 November 2016 (UTC).[reply]
Mrs Bishonen: I am sure this may seem trivial to you, but I am a Lady not a Mrs There are very few of us left, so what few we are, need to be maintained - I see this mornng there is one Lady less in the World - have been shocked to my very core this morning when reading my Mail on Sunday (yes, I am a Mail reader and proud of it too) to see photographs of America's new First Lady appearing on an aircraft attired (and I use the word loosely) as no Lady should be! I believe when travelling it is important to set an example to the natives, so I always wear a hat, gloves and my pearls - it seems in the USA standards have fallen, so I shall not be going there again until Mr and Mrs Trump have been consigned to history. I don't hold with all this rollbacking business either - it will be carpool kareoke next. It's the same with all this Brexit nonsense - what's it going to do to the price of champagne? Has anyone thought of that? No they haven't. The World is going to the dogs. I shall go to my villa in Cap Ferrat and stay there until things improve. The sysop on the wall[edit]

Nice to see you around, dear! If the flame seize on the content writers, how will fare the sysop on the wall? Bishonen | talk 18:34, 20 January 2017 (UTC).[reply]

How very true and perceptive dear Mrs Bishonen; or to put it more succinctly in the words of poor dear dead Mr Pope "The minnows, as under this vast arch they pass, murmur, 'How like whales we look, thanks to your Grace!" - Don't you agree? Whatever, Giano is currently very busy reading the book on Vanbrugh's architecture which I gave him for Christmas, so I am holding the fort, so to speak, in his absence. At least it could be me, or it could be someone else because like that perennial Cheshire cat Mr Zuckerberg, I now employ others to speak pretending to be me to the common masses. I am wondering if that nice little Mr Wales does something similar on his talk page, but then he's not as rich as Mr Zuckerberg, or me or Mr Trump come to that. Not that I am coming to Mr Trump, I declined my invitation to sit in the pouring rain yesterday. What a circus that was, totally ridiculous with all the money the USA squanders (usually poking its nose where it's not wanted) around the world, one would think they could afford to have some sort of town hall with a roof on it to crown their presidents. I can't understand why they voted for him - really I can't. My Polish butler (who is very well informed) tells me it was the Russians who voted for him, but then why isn't he president of Russia then, instead of that funny little Mr Putin? If being phenomenally rich is qualification for the job, they would have been better off with me - at least I know how to tastefully decorate a drawing room. On despairs of the world, one really does. The Lady Catherine de Burgh (talk) 14:37, 21 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Tell me, Lady C, did you, or for that matter Donald Trump (since you seem quite interested in him) ever lay the foundation stone for a great mansion at the age of six months? Bishonen | talk 18:34, 21 January 2017 (UTC).[reply]
What a very interesting question; oddly enough the answer is: No I didn't. But strangely enough while I was en uteri the entire nursery wing at Scrotum Towers was demolished and rebuilt some 500 metres from my dear mother's apartment, this was on account of her having a quite natural aversion to small children. It was only after the birth of my of my sixth sister that she discovered the cause, which is why Sardines as a parlour game fell from favour. Personally, I've always preferred Bridge as an after dinner divertimento. Naturally, I can't speak for Mr Trump (yet) but I am having him to dine at Scrotum Towers with a view to turning its dull Capability Brown landscape turned into a golf course. Quite the thing I am told. The Lady Catherine de Burgh (talk) 21:36, 21 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Resting place[edit]

The place to discuss that terminology is Template talk:Infobox person - where it has already been discussed several times. Ghmyrtle (talk) 19:54, 22 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I really can't help that, We have to change this ridiculous thing right away. The very phrase is enough to make one vow to live for ever. Can you imagine "eternal rest"; any normal person would die of boredom after the first two hours. Giano (talk) 19:59, 22 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I don't necessarily disagree with you - I'm merely pointing out that changing the wording of a parameter so that it doesn't display doesn't really help anyone, and there is a forum where it could be (and has been) discussed. Ghmyrtle (talk) 20:01, 22 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
That's as may be, but I wasn't privy to these discussions and had I been we would have given poor old Winston Churchill a decent burial. Anyway, how can ashes "rest" even if they wanted to - even the most twee Christian would realise that ashes are not going to be restored to good health after a couple of week's "rest." This is all to do with allowing the lower middle classes too much say - not to mention provincial Americans with delicate sensibilities. Giano (talk) 20:08, 22 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

ArbCom Elections 2016: Voting now open![edit]

Hello, Giano. Voting in the 2016 Arbitration Committee elections is open from Monday, 00:00, 21 November through Sunday, 23:59, 4 December to all unblocked users who have registered an account before Wednesday, 00:00, 28 October 2016 and have made at least 150 mainspace edits before Sunday, 00:00, 1 November 2016.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2016 election, please review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Mdann52 (talk) 22:08, 21 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

When it comes to (how can I tactfully put this) "proxy" voting, my family and staff will be voting en masse, and I think you will find that "we" carry a great deal more weight than you - of course, I am using the term "weight" metaphorically; you naturally are far heavier than poor little sylph-like moi.
