Central Asian Railway

Thanks for your additions to the Trans-Caspian Railway article! However, I am asking that it be moved from Central Asian Railway back to its original article name. While 'Central Asian Railway' is a correct translation from the Russian name, it is rarely (if ever) used in English. I have checked all my English-language Central Asia books, and all mentions of the railway (from both historical-based and modern works) call it the Trans-Caspian. A Google search also verifies that this is the more common English name.

Ditto for the 'Tashkent Railway' article, which already exists as Trans-Aral Railway. I added all your info from the Tashkent Railway article to the Trans-Aral article, and then added a re-direct. I just wanted to let you know. Cheers! Otebig 18:30, 4 September 2007 (UTC)

Thanks. I see that PHG has done a lot of fine work on other articles in the past, so I was a bit surprised to see the use of some unreliable sources as regards the Knights Templar. Hopefully it's just because PHG was putting too much trust into some websites that turned out to be pseudo-history fluff (there's a lot of that where the Templars are concerned). The article was not "bypassed" due to Kazanowski Palace, but due to the fact that the nomination for Anne de Joyeuse was accompanied by a good quality image and including the article in the update indicated by Camptown would have resulted in the image not being used. Weather infobox

I think the general idea is good (temperature information is encyclopedic and useful), but I, too, don't care much about this particular implementation. Peacock colors aside, the template is so wide (regardless of whether it is hidden by default) that it would more often than not clash with infoboxes and images. In Irkutsk in particular, there is no way to fix this situation unless the "Geography and climate" section is expanded (more than twice) or moved down (which isn't desirable either), or if the infobox is removed. Dear Ghirlandajo, I was simply trying to show you that your admin abuse allegations are baseless. You may not agree with admins, you may not agree with deletions an admin made, but that's no reason to be desysoped. In the same vein, if someone disagrees with your edit, that's no reason take your priveleges away. As for the RfC, are you aware that there need to be two other users who certify the dispute? To a compatriot

I now think he misunderstood the link to "Moscou": [1]. That is a hamlet where I lived for some time. The place was NOT called that way in honour of "the French victory at Borodino" as many French tourists think. It was named after a detachment of Cossacks, who stayed there in 1815 waiting for a Cossack general to return from England. During the Hundred Days, Louis XVIII came to Ghent, and was put under their protection. Ghent tourist guides still mention the story of the French King sweating in his carriage, waiting for his Cossack guard to take him from his Hotel in the Veldstraat to the French consulate at St Anne's (both the Hotel Steenhuize and St. Anne's French consulate still exist). Louis XVIII, "Lowie die zwiet" (Louis who transpires) is still a nickname in Ghent for a, er, rather fat man. After Waterloo, the cossacks seem to have left for Paris, which they may have entered together with Tsar Alexander, but I cannot source that. I am sure, however, that there were no Russian soldiers at Waterloo, though the French may have thought otherwise: a small part of the Russo-German legion (by then incorporated into the Prussian army) reached Waterloo and was still wearing their green (Russian) uniforms. This photograph was once put on the internet to show how "Russian" the architecture of Moscou is. But that dom is actually in Ledeberg, the cottage houses on the left are in Moscou.

There is a "famous" tram service from the main Ghent station to where I used to live. I can assure you that there are some American tourists who think that the "Moscou" tram really drives all the way to Russia. The Dutch spelling of the capital of Russia is actually MosKou. In any case, since he uses the same "travels and life" set up, Martin should have seen in my travels that Russia was marked with weeks only. 1. I'm in a dispute here (by the way, your own input there would be appreciated) where Dojarca claims that Rodina-Mat' referred to the USSR and not Russia. However, was there not a revived Great Russian nationalism during the Great Patriotic War, with even the Church brought back to life? I suppose an article on the concept would be illuminating, but until then, I'll see what you may have to say.

I don't believe it would be reasonable for me to discuss this subject with a person who describes the country that eradicated the fascist plague as a "fascist state".[5][6] Please reflect which country was Hitler's jackal and which proved its ruin before posting further inflammatory comments of this sort. Eight German soldiers out of ten died on the Eastern front, fighting at Kursk and Stalingrad side by side with Romanians. ok, Ghirla, you are much more familiar with this topic than I. To the casual reader, it appears that there is a Rus people, and then there are two polities known as "Rus", viz. the Rus Khaganate and the Kievan Rus. It turns out that this isn't the case at all. The "Rus people" are in fact (a) the people of the Rus Khaganate, and (b) the people of the Kievan Rus. Then it appears that Rhos is the Byzantine Greek term for Varangians. And that these are all somehow related, but it cannot be precisely established how. Based on this, I suggest we simply {{merge}} Rus' (people) into Etymology of Rus, because all it does is discuss various hypothesis of how the term originated. The actual polities are already well covered at Rus Khaganate and Kievan Rus, and there is no third entity to be covered beyond these, just various etymological hypotheses. Regarding Vladimir Wiese, is there a reason why you chose the German spelling "Wiese" instead of "Vize"? I have noticed that, except for the works that he wrote in German, he is most of the times (like for example in the bibliographies that appear in W. Barr's books), referred to as Professor "V. Yu. I really dislike how the dispute has been degenerating. I urge you both to stop accusing each other of incivility and concentrate on resolving the content dispute at hand. Reducing discussion to the level of mutual accusations in incivility is never helpful. Elonka has the reputation for never being able to let go, for needing implacably to triumph. I don't imply that this is necessarily a bad thing for a wikipedian, especially one who regularly deals with trolls and kooks, but in this particular case such an approach is not really called for. Ghirla, hi, I have to admit that I'm very confused about something you said about me. Would it be alright if we talked about it for a moment? My impression of you is that you're a prolific editor, who cares deeply about Wikipedia. I've read your userpage, and I agree with much of what you say! To my knowledge, we've never actually worked together on an article, though if I'm misremembering something, please let me know.

A couple times now, I've seen you refer to me as someone who "has to be proven right." Each time you've said this, I have been perplexed as to how you got this impression. Indeed, I feel that I am often criticized for the opposite, for being too quick to compromise! So, if you don't mind, could we clear the air a bit? You should excuse my statement about your need to always be in the right, if it is disconnected from reality, since it was not intended as a negative assessment of your general activity and was based primarily on my acquaintance with the recent RfA dramas which certaintly don't highlight this penchant for easy compromises.

As for the matter at hand, I urge you and PHG to reconcile your differences without alleging some terrible misdeeds on the part of one's opponent. For as long as I know him, PHG has been given to speculative theories and building elaborate castles on rather flimsy foundations, but overall he is an inestimable contributor of material on rather obscure topics. If I remember correctly, some of our self-important copyright "specialists" claim that there is no "freedom of panorama" in Belarus. There is a whole bunch of possibilities that stem from that. One is that this claim is nonsense as much of what is said by Wikipedia/commons wannabe copyright lawyers. Another possibility is that the image is legal if uploaded not from within Belarus as BE-law does not forbid taking pictures and US law does not forbid publishing one's own pictures. Yet another possibility is that the image is free onwiki but not allowed in commons which does (or may one day) allow only free worldwide images. Yet another possibility, is that the "freedom of panorama" important stuff is non-circumventable but this instantly opens the possibility of Fairuse rationale as the 1969 image has zero commercial value on one hand but replaceable with another non-free image only. There are endless possibilities and endless number of commons "specialists" who would give their valuable opinions on this crucial issue. --Irpen 06:53, 2 October 2007 (UTC)

Russian claims to age 110+

Greetings,

Unproven claims to age 110+ should be categorized as category: longevity claims. A category, category: Russian supercentenarians should only be used IF a case is based on proven/documented records that have been accepted by an established world authority, such as Guinness World Records or the Gerontology Research Group. Also, religious ideas about longevity, even if cited in newspapers, should not be presented as 'fact'. Claims that those in the Caucasian live longer have been debunked for 30+ years. No case has ever proven true.

If you would like to be pro-active, however, we would like to find out whatever happened to Maria Strelnikova. Note that since she came from extreme northwest Russia, where records kept were generally better, I do wonder if there are any documents to prove her age (or if/when she died).

The debunking of the Izumi case from Japan, likewise, came from the Japanese themselves (Suzuki et al). Thus what we have is not nationalism but 'science vs. mythology'. Myths are not just something that existed in the past; many people still believe them. The issue is whether we should continue the cycle of mis-information or finally live up to a standard of proof.

Maly theatre, Moscow confusion

Hello. I'm gathering material together to create a little article on the Maly Theatre, Moscow, and I'm a little confused, so I wondered whether you might have a little time to help me clear something up? I don't speak/read Russian, which is probably where I'm going wrong. My draft scribblings are here.

I'm confused about when the theatre was created. I realise there was a company first, then the building came later. But when was the company set up?

The babel-fish translation of the Maly's own history page on their website seems to imply it was the Imperial decree in 1756 that founded the company, along with Moscow Uni (although the Wikipedia article for the uni says 1755, so that's odd), as does a Russian news-page saying they're celebrating 250yr anniversary. However, all the sources in books in English that I can find - Cambridge Guide to Theatre, Oxford Companion to Theatre say it was founded in 1805 or 1806. The new page about celebrating anniversary says it's the oldest professional theatre in Russia, but the actors were students at the Uni, which suggests amateur. Brockett's History of Theatre says 1805 when the crown purchased 74 serf actors; so I don't get how the students and serfs could be one company. I realise that all the theatres came under control of the government then, but it's a bit unclear how this worked. Then they got a building in 1824 (on this, the sources agree). From then on, it becomes first the House of Shchepkin then the House of Ostrovsky, and the sources settle down and start to agree with one another.

A small detail

Hello Ghirla,

I just came across your 28-Feb-2006 comment on the Knyaz talk page, where you state that "There are no Slavic loans from Celtic, as best I know."

There are commonalities, but I don't know that I would refer to it as borrowing from one people to another. Consider, for example, the Gaelic name "MacGowan". The first syllable in the Gaelic "Mac" changes (called a mutatation), depending on its location in a sentence, and so is often spelled Mhic (the vowel becomes short, and the M mutates to a V), and it is pronounced Vic. Slavs put this at the end of a name, and Gaels put it before the name, but it is the same word, which you certainly recognize. Now, if you recognize Gowan as Kowal, then the name makes sense.

Serious problems with the Soviet/Afghanistan article

Ghirla:

Lately there have been a lot of problems in the Soviet Intervention in Afghanistan article. Two users, Raoulduke47 and Scythian1, are making all sorts of misbalanced, confused statements in the article. They are turning it into a farce.

I think my most recent edits (check the history) are the most objective way of handling the article, but these other two posters are blanking my edits and turing the article into a flame war.

They are claiming that the Soviet Union collapsed because of a "military defeat" in Afghanistan, and that the war had a "profound" and traumatic impact on the USSR.

They are citing an article published in 1999 to support their views. The views of the article's authors are isolated, and are regarded as farfetched by almost all other authorities on the subject.

From the way Raoulduke47 and Scythian1 write the article, you'd think they were talking about the impact of WW1/Brest-Litovsk or the 1241 Mongol invasion. They don't understand that the Afghan intervention was desultory skirmishing...just a sideshow to what was really happening in the USSR and the world at the time.

Isn't there any way the misblanced views of these contributors can be controlled?

I would like to interject. If there is any unbalance, it is your unexplainable insistance on removing sourced and referenced articles that goes against the traditional and well-established rules of Wikipedia. Your edits, viewable to all, have outright POV toward the Soviet/Russian position, demonstrating your motive in removing "defeat" in the Soviet-Afghan War article. Wikipedia is encylcopedic in nature and not ambiguious for a reader to make improper inferences based on murky words like "withdrawl." To take Kenmore's position would subject editors to use vague terms of no concise accuracy, leading users to make improper inferences on murky words. This is in gross contravention to the nature of Wikipedia which welcomes sourced references over speculation. Scythian1 (talk) 22:08, 1 March 2008 (UTC)

I have already explained why: 1) your sources are inadequate, and 2) why the sources should not form the cornerstone of the article’s perspective. Harvard historian Richard Pipes is regarded as the world’s leading Soviet/Russian scholar, and his views are far different than those of Reuveny and Prakash (whom you cite). So why brush aside Pipes in favor of Reuveny and Prakash? Ditto for Mark Urban. Urban’s book “War and Afghanistan” is widely regarded as one of the best and most reliable accounts of the Soviet-Afghan situation, and Urban’s conclusions are far different than those of your “sources”. So why ignore Urban? I could list dozens of other leading scholars to support my claim as well.

Reuveny and Prakash’s article is not very good. I knew a student at Johns Hopkins and when I asked him about the article, he laughed and called its argument “far fetched.” Reuveny and Prakash’s article is simply not a respected scholarly work on this subject and it should not be used as the basis of a Wikipedia account of the Soviet-Afghan epoch.

The other “sources” you cite – Viorst, Hilali, and Daugherty – consist of just isolated remarks in books that do not directly concern what happened on the ground in Afghanistan or in Soviet society following the war. Those books concern subjects that are tangential to the Soviet-Afghan conflict. To use these “sources” to set the tone and flow of the article is irresponsible.

My perspective is not pro Russian/Soviet either. I am merely trying to establish the truth about the Soviet-Afghan epoch. Richard Pipes, after all, is known for being vehemently anti-Soviet and he’s not especially sympathetic to post-USSR Russia, either. Yet even Pipes does not make the ridiculous, far fetched claims that Reuveny and Prakash do.

There was no Soviet military defeat in Afghanistan (read Urban). There war had no “profound” effect on Soviet society (read Pipes). Your sources – and the irresponsible claims you make based on those sources – need to go. Kenmore (talk) 01:33, 2 March 2008 (UTC)

The image shows Winter Palace after the attempte assasination of Alexander II by Stephan Khalturin. I was given an extremely nice book "Interiors of Winter Palace in the 19th century paintings". I intend to upload many of the illustrations to wiki but I need to buy a new scanner for this. The book has A4 format (many illustrations are on double pages) and my scanner could only take something smaller and it is a pain to combine a single image out of a few scans Alex Bakharev (talk) 21:55, 27 March 2008 (UTC)

I did my best to clean up the citations, but my Russian is really minimal (it might be maybe my 10th-best language; I don't usually even count it); I made some use of Google Translate to try to understand some of the footnotes (though I didn't always follow it literally) and I did my best to cut some that really obviously did not meet our "reliable sources" criteria; I have my doubts about some of the ones that remain. I found it, it is the Lectionary 243, l²⁴³ (Gregory-Aland), and it is not a minuscule codex. Now it is listed here: List of New Testament lectionaries. It was difficult to find it.

Mordvins & Volga Finns

Hey Andrey. Long time no talk. I've been working recently on the Mordvins and Volga Finns articles. The Mordvins article was moved last November to Volgaic Finns. However, I reverted the move yesterday after discussing it with Untifler at User talk:Untifler#Question. The problem is that some of the surrounding articles are still quite a mess. For example, Moksha people is totally unsourced and doesn't even mention the Mordvins at all. Same with Erzya people. I think these articles need to be fixed up, but I also think that the underlying problem is that these articles are not clear at all on whether the Moksha and Erzya are supgroups of the Mordvins, or distinct ethnic groups in their own right. Do you know the history behind the term "Mordvin"? Perhaps you could help me clarify it in these articles. Also, the article about Tyushtya is totally unsourced and largely confusing. Maybe you could assist me in this page as well. Finally, Volga Finns needs to be expanded. If the info from ru:Волжские финны is reliable, neutral, and sourced, I guess someone could translate at least part of it into English. Please let me know if you're too busy, but thanks in advance. I am trying to draw your attention to a contradiction. When speaking of two dialects of a language it seems strange the language is missing. Believe me there is no Mordvin language. Moksha and the Erzya do have little in common. Moksha and Erzya are separate languages and it has been already proved. Scottish English and US English may not exist without English itself. Nabokov's negative attitude toward the Ozhegov volume has registered with me. You can't expect me to remember the source of this particular quote, though, more than three years after the edit. Petrozavodsk

Hi, Ghirla! Could you, please, explain, what in the world crossed your way in the Petrozavodsk article? Looking at the edits which allegedly "have no merit whatsoever", I actually see a mix of edits, some of which indeed have no such merit, some are fairly useful, some are mostly technical, and some are not very important but do no harm nevertheless. If you want to clean up the article, why not just clean up the truly problematic parts, whatever they are, instead of reverting to some random edit from the past? And what's up with the infobox? I don't know if I should be surprised that one day you hate the whole infobox concept, the other day you love them, and the following day you are back to hating them again, but this particular one happens to be quite complete and well-developed. You should know very well that if you take this infobox out, some poor well-intentioned soul will add it back weeks or months later, except that it will be one part empty and the other part filled with stuff that's laughably inaccurate. You and me might not be around at the time to fix it. What good will that do?

Anyway, I restored the article in its most recent condition. If there are some urgent problems I am just not seeing but which you don't have time to fix yourself, please post a list of them on the article's talk page. I'll try to have them fixed without such drastic measures as whole-sale reversals.

Ghirla, Hello! I have been looking at the article Economy of Russia for some time now, and feel like it could use some major improvements. This actually motivated me to register: however, I’m new around here and don’t want to do anything too major without the guidance and support of a wikipedia veteran. You seem to be the only person on Economy of Russia’s talk page Talk:Economy of Russia who is currently active, so I decided to send you a message. Apart from putting in citations/citations needed tags, checking for accuracy of numbers, etc. some major things I’d like to do (or see happen) are 1.moving a large amount of the information into an Economic history of Russia page, and adding a lot of missing information about what has happened in the past 2-3 years. So, I have two questions for you. First, do you have any advice for me before I start doing anything drastic? Also, if I created a list of possible changes to Economy of Russia (since there are so many changes that need to be done) would I post that on the talk page, or would it belong somewhere else? I am not sure. We usually do not delete peer reviews without a pressing need for this. If a privacy involved, I could probably speedy delete the review (but you have to explain the reasons by E-mail to me. Otherwise you could file WP:MfD for the review but I am not sure about the results. If you care only of Google search result you could probably blank the page without deletion. Fish farming

Hey Ghirla, what is this aggression and rudeness actually about? I certainly don't "own" Fish farming. You say the article is in a "sorry state". Please explain what you mean. As far as the template you refer to, there are another sixty of those templates relating to fishing and fisheries. Each one has a lead menu item which goes to the lead article for that template. The lead article and the template share the same image. Good Morning Ghirla! I wrote a small article about the Church of St. Mary of Blachernae, and I have a question for you about the Icon of the Blachernitissa. In the related article it is written that the Icon escaped the distruction of the church and was brought first to the Athos and then to Russia. Now, none of my sources mentions this fact, but they say that all the relics burned in the fire which destroyed the church. Copyright query

Hi Ghirla, someone came to me with a question about a really famous photograph and whether it remains in the public domain under the new Russian copyright law: Image:The Commissar Vanishes 2.jpg. We can't find the photographer's name Googling English language sources. It looks like we'll need the photographer's name and date of death to determine whether this is still public domain. Otherwise, unfortunately, it needs to be deleted from Commons and reloaded locally to en:wiki with restricted placement per fair use guidelines. Could you assist with this research? Hi, Ghirla, how nice to again see your dauntless posts here and there around the site. About those imagebot posts that you don't care about... User:Tex explained to me that the {{nobots}} template doesn't work very well. But putting {{bots|deny=all}} on the page would probably keep the bots away. It seems to be working for me. What do we have to do to get you back here?

Hey Ghirla, we haven't really bumped into each other in the past, and I have read various discussions which you have had with others, and can understand your reasons for all but giving up on en:wiki, but the question is what do we have to do to get back here, and I mean back here with a "vengeance" (so to speak). I have started a proposal at WP:RUSSIA to merge several projects into one main WP:RUSSIA project, and hopefully start laying the groundwork for getting WP:RUSSIA where it should be as a project. But, it is going to require people with sense, people with experience, etc, and I am hoping that you may be able to take a look at the proposal, and comment on it as necessary -- Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Russia/Proposal -- one of the main things that we at en:wiki need to do is to obtain more able editors from ru:wiki -- I can understand Russian editors wanting to improve ru:wiki first and foremost, but if we are able to lay the right framework here on en:wiki, perhaps we can convince more editors from ru:wiki to come across here as well. To see major Russian articles, such as Russia, Russian language, Moscow etc not being WP:FA, it's a shame, and it will require a joint, group effort to improve these ever-important articles, so perhaps we can get some comments from you on the proposal, and maybe, just maybe, get you in on the project also, and lending your expertise on occasion also? Isn't Nabokov's translation of Lermontov's "Dream" a copyvio?

Hi. I noticed that among your many contributions to Mikhail Lermontov some years ago, you included Vladimir Nabokov's translation of a famous poem. Do you have some reason to believe this isn't a copyvio? • I would think that putting an attributed copyrighted translation of a short poem to the article about the author, for the pupose of critical commentary constitutes fair use as defined by the copyright law of the USA. Do not see any problem here. Interesting. I hadn't considered fair use, and would have thought this definitely didn't qualify. You may understand these legal matters better than I do. However, if fair use is the justification, then the translation should meet all the critera at WP:NFCC, and it fails the first one: "Non-free content is used only where no free equivalent is available, or could be created, that would serve the same encyclopedic purpose." A new translation can certainly be created. So as soon as I have time, I'll replace the copyrighted translation with an unrhymed one that I'll make with the help of a dictionary and Nabokov's translation—unless someone else does it first. Hi Andrey, there's a discussion here about some of your edits, which I believe involved copying a public-domain text. Although that means there's no copyright issue, there's still the plagiarism aspect — given that the article's about a very important writer, it would be good if we could write it in our own words.

It would be very helpful if you could go through the text and attribute the parts of it that are taken from elsewhere. Then we can decide which bits to rewrite, and which to leave as quotations. Many thanks, SlimVirgin ^{talk|contribs} 00:22, 8 January 2009 (UTC)

Actually, I just noticed there's no plagiarism issue, so no worries on that front.[18] It would, however, still be nice if we could specify which parts are from that source. Photo Bronzewar.jpg

This photo Bronzewar.jpg is captioned "The en:Bronze Horseman camouflaged from the German aircraft during the en:Siege of Leningrad, en:August 8, en:1941" and is used and similarly captioned in Bronze Horseman. I think 'camouflaged' is wrong and should be 'protected' or similar word. The statue is not meant to be hidden but protected. Camouflage is meant to blend with the surrounding and background which is not the case. GS3 (talk) 00:11, 13 February 2009 (UTC)

Oh for the love of chicken! I don't know what part of the MOS requires that these images be unstacked, but you've created an unsightly gap in the article for no discernible purpose. The second image is not discussed in the article, so why do you persist? Is there something in the MOS that prevents what I did? Yeah, I dislike stacks of images, but I don't believe that makes me "anti-social". There are other problems with your edits, such as bolding the subject;s name in the captions. P.S.
