Toshkan and Aksu[edit]

Hello Geanixx: after reading both your Aksu River (China) and Toshkan River I have been looking for maps with show the situation the way you describe it. this map is the best map I could find online, but it does not show both rivers. Now I have the impression that Aksu and Tashkin in fact are the same river and that Aksu/Aqsu is its Turkic name and Tashkin its Chinese one. What was your source? I may be wrong... Hi Fransvannes. No, the rivers are two separate rivers. The Toshkan runs parallell to the Tien Shan and joins the Aksu near the city of Aksu. On the map, the Aksu is the river that comes straight out of the Tien Shan north/northwest of Aksu city. The map is not accurate, however, as the rivers in Kyrghyzstan that seems to run together near the "H" in Tien Shan, is in fact the headwaters of the Aksu, and continues south. The map does not show this connecting stretch of river, nor the name of the Aksu river north of Aksu city. I checked this out before writing the article, and if I remember correctly it was on a website I Googled that described the geography of the two rivers. But I forgot to save the link, and now I cannot find it again. The article itself I translated from German wikipedia, which gives the same information, but no references. I must check this more thoroughly when I get the time, and get back to you.Geanixx (talk) 23:56, 15 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. I found some additional information in the meantime, which makes clear that you were right that the Toshkan is not the Aksu. There seems to be no consensus however about the status of the waters which meet near Aksu city. This article (p. 226) writes that the Aksu has two headwaters: Tushikan [Tushkan] and Kunmalik. That would mean that there is no Aksu before the place where these two meet. Here however is argued that these two rivers (here: Ak-Saj / Kokšaal resp. Sary Džaz) are tributaries (Nebenflüsse) of the Aksu (there is a map on page 33). I don't know where the "Aksu" begins in the latter, but in any case this one reflects the presentation in your articles.

Anyway, I think that texts which state that Aksu city is on the Toshkan river are wrong, of at least incomplete. Such a statement in the Dutch Wikipedia was in fact the reason why I wanted to find this out. Fransvannes (talk) 13:57, 16 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your very useful information. I agree that the name of the Aksu north of Aksu city is unclear and needs further research. To your last point: That is correct. I have checked Google Earth and the city center lies about 10 km to the east and 5 km downstream from the confluence of the two rivers. Asian 10,000 Challenge invite[edit]

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Asia/The 10,000 Challenge has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like South East Asia, Japan/China or India etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. At some stage we hope to run some contests to benefit Asian content, a destubathon perhaps, aimed at reducing the stub count would be a good place to start, based on the current Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon which has produced near 200 articles in just three days. If you would like to see this happening for Asia, and see potential in this attracting more interest and editors for the country/countries you work on please sign up and being contributing to the challenge!
