Census India

I came across the new site of census while updating Gangtok, and found that the provisional table of population that GR India template uses is now outdated. Unfortunately, I could not dig out any such updated table, which would provide us with the population of cites.

Please see this and comment. As the provisional data is replaced by updated data, somehow we should change that, too. But how? This is very fundamental, and needs to be addressed. Regards.--Dwaipayan (talk) 17:07, 15 May 2008 (UTC)

Topographic maps

Hi. I made this topographic map for Kerala. Let me know what you think, especially whether similar maps could be useful in articles for other states. Thanks. Mkeranat (talk) 13:34, 18 May 2008 (UTC)

Hi, you may be interested/helpful in the discussion at Wikipedia:Village pump (proposals)#Wikipedia logo improvement. Thanks :) -- Quiddity (talk) 02:57, 19 May 2008 (UTC)

Per this edit, the top-left character is a khmer character. You don't need to fix it. Can you please check out the Quiddity's link and confirm if other issues have been taken care of? Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 03:11, 19 May 2008 (UTC)
I think it is both a Khmer character and a Tamil character, then. The problem with it was not that the character was drawn wrongly, but that it did not represent the sound "w" like the other characters in the logo. The Khmer character does not represent "w" either. Bot work - UN/LOCODE

Do you know UN/LOCODE? For India they don't have much codes yet ( http://www.unece.org/cefact/locode/in.htm ). Maybe we could make a mass submit to the UNECE. To do this, it would be good to connect existing codes and existing articles. Category:Redirects from UN/LOCODE has redirects in the form UN/LOCODE:USNYC, where USNYC is the code for New York City. A bot inserted redirects for almost all US UN/locodes. For India there are currently only few code redirects e.g. UN/LOCODE:INDEL, UN/LOCODE:INMAA (Chennai). Maybe it is a good idea to add more. Could your bot help to create redirects? UnLoCode (talk) 12:22, 19 May 2008 (UTC)

link examples, use firefox or other standard browser
UnLoCode (talk) 12:40, 19 May 2008 (UTC)

I 've asked others before, e.g. one user worked with a bot on Template:Infobox Settlement but he couldnt do it, they pointed me to WP:bot_requests. Where my request only got archived twice. So I looked in the list of bots. Looked whether they did something with geography. I am happy that I contacted you and you could do it. UnLoCode (talk) 17:24, 22 May 2008 (UTC)

This looks pretty neat - although last I tried to use AWB I had headaches with the auto-update feature.

I will highlight it on the Water Cooler over at Wikinews because I believe people went through all our country categories and fixed them up already. --Brian McNeil /talk 08:03, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

Hi

Hi Ganeshk. Wow I haven't spoken to you in ages!!! How are you these days my friend? Yes thats a useful tool indeed. Yes if approved this will be by far the largest development of wikipedia in its history potentially to double in article size and scope. IN my view this kind of technology should be used to start articles on other things too such as Nature -species and genera (pLants, insects and stars) of which there are also millions of articles missing. I know small bot runs have been done in the past but its time to get serious I think and start running some larger scale operations which potentially will boost the encyclopedia may times in size. With India I had been meaning to contact you as at present the coverage of India in google maps seems relatively underedeveloped. We only have about 28,000 google maps but the 2001 census states there are around 638,000, a frigthening figure. Do you have any knowledge of where we could obtain reliable statistics even if basic on all of the settlements. I'm sure you would agree that 638,000 articles on Indian towns/villages alone would be monumental, possible but we need to know how to go about it. ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 15:36, 25 May 2008 (UTC)

What we can do is get small group together (see my converstation on Jimbo Wales's talk page) and evaluate the most lacking parts of the encyclopedia in terms of bulk and potentially encyclopedic value (all world locations, major landmarks, major roads, plants, insects, species, stars, genes etc) and start running series of bots to build this site dramatically in these important areas. Naturally we write the encyclopedia article but it makes senses to save years of time stubbing articles if it can be done automatically and consistently. A big problem with geo articles is inconsistency, the bot also means that new articles will be consistent ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 15:42, 25 May 2008 (UTC)

Any input you can put on Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval/FritzpollBot or to its owner in discussing this devleopment would be much appreciated ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 15:45, 25 May 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for those links. I wonder if there is a way to obtain their coordinate positions.... I would imagine a bot could be programmed to start every village in India but it woudl certainly help if we could locate them. If we plan on developing this I would strongly propose changing the names of the INdian categories to include villages e.g Category:Cities, towns and villages in Uttar Pradesh. Depending on how many there are it would probably be more reasonable to organize by district of each state. This is what I plan to do with Bangladesh and India is many times larger than this ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 09:27, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

Generally if they have the articles on falling rain they have them at maplandia although India may be the exception. If not it would probably be best to combine the sources for India. Coordinates and distane to nearest settlement is almost always accurate at falling rain but I would seriously suggest not using any other data, even altitude from falling rain as it has proved very unreliable in the past ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 12:45, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

I agree note Category:Cities, towns and villages in the Barisal Division which I began doing for Bangladesh. Basically the settlments in each district would be listed under the state category which in turn feeds in to the main cities in india category. I can help you set up a new categorical structure if you like. I doubt there would be any objections to increasing content and better organization ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 13:05, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

For instance Category:Cities and towns in Krishna district should be moved to Category:Cities, towns and villages in Krishna District ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 13:09, 26 May 2008 (UTC) Yes I addressed this to Fritz earlier. I requested that he speak to User:Alai about it but he hasn't yet to my knowledge. As we will have 1100 stubs on Afghanistan afterwars and it is best it is done as efficiently as well and plan the stub categories in advance. Do you think it will be possible to get all 638,000 Indian settlements onto here? That would be an awesome achievement and a quarter of what wikipedia is now alone. It just shows how much the project can and will increase. 2.3 mill really is a small fish in the ocean for a project of this scale ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 13:18, 26 May 2008 (UTC).

Any idea how many districts are in India? ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 13:37, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

Yes I've been going through countries adding infoboxes and coordinates manually. Afgthanistan is taking ages -I;ve reached Q. Could you finish the rest? They should be using DMS coordinates not decimal. I must admit I'm not really up on AWB and how I could be using it. I know it would be very useful if I did know how as it would make tasks I do much quicker ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 15:37, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

Hi. Mmm I'm starting to think that maybe Afghanistan would be neater split by province. Agreed? Could you help recategorize them using AWB? We'll need to create 34 new categories ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 21:37, 28 May 2008 (UTC)

I actually use a fairly primitive Perl script to construct the worklists. If you'd like, I can give you guys the script, or even run it for you if you have a reasonably simple category set you need to collect. Kirill (prof) 03:59, 27 May 2008 (UTC)

Ganeshk I created the new categories ready but they've hit the cfd at here . Perhaps you could give some input. Duplicate categories were unintentional and some of the names variate. Afghanistan provincial geo-stub templates

Hi Ganeshk - I see you've made a start on the geo-stub templates for Afghanistan. One thing, though - although the category is right (the upmerged Category:Afghanistan geography stubs), it's better to have the wording of each template indicating which province the stub is for (see the changes I've made to {{Badakhshan-geo-stub}} for an example). Grutness...wha? 01:44, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

Bot approved: dabbing help needed

Hi there. Fritz bot has been approved at Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval/FritzpollBot for filling in a possible 1.8 million articles on settlements across the world. Now dabbing needs to be done for links which aren't sorted as the bot will bypass any blue links. and I need as many people as possible to help me with Wikipedia:WikiProject Missing encyclopedic articles/Places to prepare for the bot. If you could tackle a page or two everything counts as it will be hard to do it alone. Thankyou ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 12:07, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

Mmm just goes to show how clueless they are about the world we live in. I used the 28,000 vs 638,000 as an example to show them and according to them even the 28,000 would need serious filtering for notability. You and I both know that full articles could be written for considerably higher number of places than this. The people opposing are not editors who work on geo articles and realize how many notable towns and villages are actualyl missing. They just seme to think it will be spamming wikipedia. P.S are you still speaking to me? I hope I didn't offend you with the falling rain discussion and it certainly wasn't intended. But yes I agree it would be great to get hold of as much reliable data as possible ♦Blofeld of SPECTRE♦ $1,000,000? 16:13, 1 June 2008 (UTC)

Ganesh, It is not always easy to go down till the last level category for running this. I have a suggestion not sure whether it is pratical. The feature should be in AWB not in the plugin. While we give a category to recursively list articles, there should be option to give subcategories to avoid/exclude. Thoughts ?? -- TinuCherian (Wanna Talk?) - 03:09, 3 June 2008 (UTC)
