Dear Ganesh,

Today you visited Bishnupriya Manipuri Wiki, and left a question for me that how did I translate 5000 Indian Cities in a short time? First of all I would like to thank you and your script. I was trying to contact with you and left a few lines at Ganeshbot/Requests page (22:52, 26 October 2006 (hist) (diff) User:Ganeshbot/Requests (→Requests for template substitution, replacement, or addition)) for your suggestion and help. Since then no response and page also move to archive or deleted.

Anyway, using your script, I created almost 80% of the Indian city within a month. I translate the database file 1 state at a time just using Windows Notepad, Avro Keybord (UniBijoy). I hope I will finish by next week.

I thank you again, and also I thank Ragib (from Bangla + English wiki) for his help and tips.

Ahh, I didn't realize it had been going on so long. The one I reverted was more elaborate, like the guy's trying to make some sort of POV point that India was a nation long before 1947. Where is that so-called discussion you talk about. I created South Asia tag to REPLACE India tags in those articles which are NOT about present day India. Tagging Pakistan related articles with Ashok Chakkar and calling the entire region India, which is now completely worng, is outrageous and offensive to the Pakistani Wikipedians. Ashok Chakkar is same as Indian flag and reflects favourism for a relogion, i.e. Hinduism which I think is against NPOV. Now using the map of entire region and saying this article is about India; well it is outright outrageous and completely unacceptable. You as an administrator should stay away from this on going dispute as your Indian background is making you take sides against me. What you think is favoritism is not favoritism. Its merely the facts. Pakistani history dates back to the 1930's. No one cares what Pakistani wikipedians think about India, its how documented phenomenon characterize the region. script box[edit]

I think the languages you should put for now are Bengali, Tamil, Malayam, Kannada, and of course Hindi. Maybe marathi if you want to squeeze it in. The sikh project mostly takes care of the punjabi. support for removing the Indus from the "History Of India" page[edit]

Ganeshk,I want to express my full support for Shzhaider,regarding the removal of the indus from the History of India page to either the page user:Szhaider has created or move it to the History of Pakistan page(prefferred). Szhaider, I think Nadirali is confusing the IVC issue in article content with my discussion with you on the talk page tagging. The IVC issue should be addressed after discussions on History of India page. I was not part of any such discussion. The talk page tagging issue was discussed at the Indian notice board (under section template logo), I would suggest you and Nadirali read through that link. Nichalp has explained why history should be part of the scope of the regional projects. Please comment over there if you have any objections. Harappa has nothing to do with the ISlamic Republic of Pakistan except for the fact that it lies in the geographic boundaries of the country. Please see the citations for the adding. It was taken from the Ayyavazhi article and the sources are University Papers. See that 8000 worship centers for Ayyavazhi through out South India. But as per Wiki policies University papers are considered valid sources. Also if you've gone through previous discussion please see the page of Ayyavazhi for the citation. The sources are all LMS Reports, University Papers, or Historians whose are view points from valid neutral poles, except for belief related things. Also three dists in Tamil Nadu are declared Holiday for an Ayyavazhi festival. Since theres no such thing as "Pakistani history" my removing the tags is justified. I dont care what two POV-pushers will do or not do about it. If they accuse me of being an Indian nationalist, I am one of the more active members on WikiProject Bangladesh where we have no problems between West Bengali, non-Bengali, and Bangladeshi editors. Many Pakistani editors engage in removing "Indian imperialism" and "Bengali traitor propaganda", and I merely undo their bad faith vandalism.   • Name change of cities in Karnataka: A straw poll was conducted on the proposal to change the name of cities in Karnataka, per the Nov 1, 2006 decision by the Karnataka government to rename them from the current anglicised forms. The result of the poll was to change the names. As controversial as the decision may be in the real world, the article Bangalore in Wikipedia still reflects the old name. You may be interested in knowing why. Dig the archives.
  • New Project Noticeboard (Shortcut:WP:INB): WikiProject India now sports a new colourful centralised noticeboard. An effort to make the noticeboard current and dynamic was mooted a few days back, and Ganeshk came up with the new format. The new noticeboard will strive to be the one-stop shop for all project related information. The shortcut is WP:INB.
  • Members List: The old members list is being phased out to give way for the new members list. New members are requested to add their names to the new members list. As the newsletter grows, further issues of the Project Newsletter will be delivered to those enlisted in the new list. So dash down now, to check if ur name is in there.

Question about statistics table[edit]

Hi Ganesh, I think you were asked something like this before. I see 10 unassessed Top Importance articles. How do I access them? Shouldnt the number 10 be wikilinked or something? — Lost(talk) 12:17, 3 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have fixed the problem at hand by adding new cats to the template. BTW, would it break the Mathbot's functioning if we wikilink the stats to the relevant cats? Or can we program the mathbot itself to Wikilink it? — Ambuj Saxena (talk) 15:49, 3 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Mathbot over-writes the stats-page everyday. Any changes to it will be lost. I requested Mathbot to link the categories to the numbers. But there were no takers for the idea. They wanted me to use Wikipedia:Version_1.0_Editorial_Team/India_articles_by_quality/1 for that purpose. It is a page that lists articles sorted by quality and importance. That is a tedious way of accessing the information I need. When other projects see the need, may be they will wikilink the cats. Who knows? Till then we just need to get the cats manually. Help needed in Carnatic music[edit]

Hi. I need a bit of help from you regarding Carnatic music. There are a couple of editors User:Srkris and User:Sarvagnya who seem to be dead against a paragraph in this article. The paragraph is exactly seven sentences long and almost every sentence is cited, some of them from multiple sources. This paragraph is infact has the highest number of citation in the entire article. There is nothing controversial about the paragraph either. However these users seem to have a POV against this paragraph. I haven't received any vaild reasons for the deletion apart from vaguely labelling them 'fake', 'rubbish', 'half truth', 'impretinent', etc. I'm tired of this. BTW Srkris got blocked for a week for his violations of policy. I haven't heard any explanations from the other users as yet. Formation of India in Infobox & framing of 'Expelling'[edit]

Dear Ganeshk,

There is a fierce discussion going on in the India page with Fowler&fowler trying to impose eurocentric views on words such as "Colony" and removing "Formation" info from the India Infobox. I request you to put in your comments supporting the removal of the sentence "Colonised as ..." and reframing it to "India emerged as a...expelled the non-natives...single nation-state". I also request your support for the Formation info in the infobox. Additionally I also request your support that references need not be necessary all the time (as all references contain eurocentric terms).

An Indic page should contain non-nationalistic Indic views only, and not eurocentric views.

Proposal for "how to get started" bots page - your opinions?[edit]

I think there is confusion on how to go about starting a bot (eg here and here) and there is no wikipage covering this, the main bot page talks only about policy, not avenues for getting started, how to make a bot etc. I have made a suggestion that a howto page be established and, as a frequent editor helping out with bots, I would appreciate your comments. Ref conv[edit]

Sorry for the downtime. References converter is now back up and running. About a week ago the hard drive in my server crashed. Luckily it stayed together long enough to allow me to pull all the data off onto a new hard drive, but I still had to go through the process of installing Linux on the new hard drive, installing all the necessary programs, and loading in all of the old data from the server. I got all of my essential services up within two days (CVS, Apache, Wiki), but I kind of forgot about web scripts, which I finally got around to fixing today. Thanks for the reply. I dont know python at all. However, I can learn a few things required for the bot operation. Plus, I was thinking of creating a Babelfish like software for Indic languages (as most of the grammar and syntax of these languages are derived from Sanskrit and hence are similar) so that an article created in, say Nepal Bhasa can be directly converted to Bhojpuri or Pali. Hi. User:Ncmvocalist, with whom I have a dispute in the Carnatic music article, insists on leaving NPA and Civil warnings in my Talk poage with no evidence. Can you please review this and remove these warning if you deem them inappropriate. You may also want to see this regarding this matter. Hi Ganesh, with regard to the above (and below), this may provide a little more context behind the warnings he received from me:
The user, having agreed less than 10 days ago, indirectly agreed that the article talk page isn't the place to make personal attacks [[1]], chose to make unnecessary remarks about other users (i.e. me in this case) [[[[2]], rather than simply asking for comment on content. Further to this, he has made an incivil remark (a personal attack seeing my name was mentioned before this) and failed to assume good faith in saying that it is blatant anti-tamil POV and bias. Prior to 11 December, not just on the Carnatic music talk page, but also on other pages, he has made remarks that are incivil or constitute personal attacks.
As was said by him in the first link I provided, warnings(templates) were left on his page for his violations (by me), and this isn't the first time he has made a string of personal attacks or incivil remarks, and been warned. Ncmvocalist 02:26, 21 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I feel there is a lot of tit-for-tat tagging of warning templates. The warning templates help make users aware of the policies. I feel Venu and Ncm are established users and don't need to be educated of policies here. I would suggest you two to cool down and stop placing talk-warnings. Please assume AGF and discuss and work-out content issues.

I noticed you were a Tamil speaking admin. I have been working on translating all 63 Nayanar pages (including some not on en wiki) into Hindi. Right now I have three pages created (Thirunavukarasar, Manikavasagar, and Kotpuli) For organization I created Category:Nayanar saints (and the Hindi counterpart), could you point me to any other en-wiki saints that I may have missed? Administrative conflict of interest in the case of Ganesh, an administrator and an editor on this site[edit]

I'm copying part of my message to you that I've left at the IIPM talk page. This is just for your information.

  • Thanks Ganesh. The reason I focused on fixing your spelling and grammar, was because I took offence to being told that I was accusing "established editors and administrators". Neither is Deepak any more "established" than a normal Wikipedia dabbler; nor are you, and more so in matters of English; and 'English', mind it, which forms the basis of Wikipedia. As Wikipedia confirms, we're not striving for perfection. Ergo, I do not expect your English to be perfect; and it is not, you make unbelievable subject-object, composition, modifying verb et al errors (and not just once, your statements do have many of those). It proves to me that to become an administator, one needs to be focused on following ethical guidelines of editing, and not necessarily on getting one's English appropriately conjectured. I find a clear conflict of interest in your continuing editing on this page, at the same time holding administrative responsibilities, at the same time awarding another editor for ensuring that he has kept controversial details alive on the page. I do not mind controversial details being discussed by editors. But I object to those being discussed by administrators with extra powers; even if they might not finally use their extra power openly. But you did use your powers indirectly. For information, instead of directing Deepak Shenoy to (file a request to) block the page, you chose yourself to write to Nishkid. And when you did message Nishkid to block the page, you did not message as an editor (which you could have). You deliberately told him you were an administrator (thus confirming your status) and requested him twice to block the page, which he, after a couple of days, did. His response must have been more positive because you are an administrator. Therefore, I put in a formal statement out here to request you to kindly not continue editing on this page or using your administrative capacities on this page. Ganesh, there is a clear and evident conflict of interest in your actions. If you agree, I shall not lodge a formal complaint. If you do wish to continue editing, I shall lodge a formal complaint and also let everybody in the Wikipedia community know such a conflict exists blatantly. I'll await your resonse. User:Asprakash changes needs to be reverted in TN article[edit]

I read over TN article yesterday, and it was of fair quality. But recent changes by User:Asprakash in my opinion has decreased the quality. He/she has removed entire section about education and put up a meaningless list.

Previously the article was slighly pro Tamil nationlistic, but recent changes are just some agenda driven. The agenda seems to be some pan Indian identity. Why is a subject heading such as Racial concepts is necessary in an article about Tamil Nadu? Also, bombarding the reader with economic statistics is simply not good writing? I can go on.

I am not familiar with all those involved in editing this article, thus I do not want to make any bold changes or get into a cat fight. Please, take note and revert to an acceptable condition. I would say the last time I edited (minor changes ex: tamil -> Tamil), the article was in fair condition. There has been some other edits as well.

What's up with fair use images nowadays?[edit]

I noticed that there is considerable heated discussion at Wikipedia Talk:Fair use and images of living celebrities like Image:M karunanidhi 20060526.jpg are considered "replaceable fair use" (also see Template talk:AutoReplaceable fair use -- it looks like such templates are used by Special:Upload to nip such images in the bud). Do you know anything about what is going on? How are we to get a free (as in "freedom" of course) image of a celebrity? -- Paddu 17:49, 1 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I can understand that an image of the Tirupati temple is replaceable, but how feasible it is for random people (read, Wikipedians) to take snaps of celebrities who are under a heavy security cover? Hi, I am writing about the user, Himalayanashoka, who was blocked for 48 hours last night for a 3RR violation. This user has a long history of vandalism and sockpuppetry on the India page. Well, this morning I noticed that 3 new users had appeared who seemed to be making the same kind of edits and writing in the same quaint style. These are: HomzUmrigar , Shyamasundara Vetrivel and MazharUbaid. Two of these user pages were created this morning and the third on December 30 (perhaps in anticipation of the battle). They are all making the kind of bold edits that beginners seldom make. Thought I'd let you know. I have also written to admin William Connolly who blocked him last night. Introducing myself. Though I am a silent reader and look forward to clean up grammatic mistakes in interesting pages because of my journalistic background. Was 'naturally' going through the India page (no contribution as yet) and saw the various versions (I hope I am right in the using the word version). The lead written by Chanakyathegreat, NobleEagle, IndianStar was really good, accurate and presented a very balanced view about the country. However, it has been reverted by you to an older version which from my point of view does not give a true picture about India.

Since you are a senior member here, would request you to look into it and sort it out so that the page reads better.

Project News
  • Project tagging:After a brief edit war over the addition of {{WP India}} to ancient archaeological sites now located in Pakistan, a "pre" parameter was introduced to remove the ROI flag from the template for pre-1947 articles, following discussion. After another large discussion on ANI alleging that the automated tagging by Ganeshbot and LostBot was "nationalistic", Ganeshbot was briefly blocked. Currently, the bots are again in action.
  • Swastika on Hinduism templates:Recently, an extremely large and at times emotional debate broke out regarding the use of the swastika on Hinduism templates, given its association with Nazism. As a result, {{Hindu Links}} now contains an educational message about the use of the swastika, as discussion on a more permanent resolution continues.

This edition special
  • Translation Department: Can you read and write any languages of India? Do you know multiple languages and are looking to keep your skills at a high level or improve them? If so, the Translation Depeartment may be for you!

The translation department of the India WikiProject aims to utilize high-quality non-English material related to India for the goals of the project. This includes both translating articles from and to other-language Wikipedias as well as assisting contributors with non-English sources. The department aims to provide services in transliteration, formulating scripts for various languages, as well as translating articles from one language to another and validating sources in other languages to that of the encyclopedia article. If you are looking for a friendly translator here is your go-to point. Currently, we are still seeking representation for Kashmiri, Nepali, Oriya, Sindhi and Tulu, as well as reinforcements in all other languages.
