Template edits

While I appreciate what you are attempting to do with the galaxy and galaxy cluster templates, your recent changes to those templates does not seem to work well if references are used in the templates (as is commonly done in the galaxy articles). Could you please fix the problem for all templates? If you do not fix the problem by 26 Nov, I will revert your changes to the templates (although I would prefer to see the template work with your revisions). I gave this some thought, and I am going to revert your changes to the galaxy and galaxy cluster templates for now. The previous system was working fine; including the references in the same template line as the data itself makes more sense than splitting the information in the templates. Moreover, no other quantities in the infoboxes are treated this way. However, I am willing to discuss this further at Wikipedia:WikiProject Astronomical objects. It would have been appropriate for you to discuss your template changes there first before Dr. Submillimeter 11:26, 24 November 2006 (UTC)

I read your comments on the WikiProject Astronomical objects page. Your changes now make more sense, although I still do not think that they should be implemented. Also, you should not have created Template:Galaxy demo. You should have created the template as a user page. You should ensure that the template is deleted when the template discussion is over. Finally, you should not have deleted the warning messages on your talk pages about uploaded material. Actually, I am not certain that templates themselves can be created in userspace, but you can create tables that look like templates. That would have been sufficient for the discussion. I have to agree, I think that this overexposes wikisky.org and, inadvertently, promotes the site (also, by this extension, the bolding is problematic, and I'm seeing a few users who followed suit, bolding nasa links, and so on, which makes those pages look odd). The point, though, is that a reader can search any astronomical body in the map, so I'm not sure we need the ready-made links added to tens upon tens of these respective entries. All this copyright stuff rather confuses me. Original DSS2 data (photographic plates) is copyrighted. See [1]. Then NASA's Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) digitized those photographic plates into FITS, but original copyright is preserved in digital data. At the same time the image , that is actually produced out of DSS2 data, set on Wikipedia as public domain without copyright. Anyway WIKISKY team specifically asked for permission to use DSS2 data for Wikipedia articles illustrations. If you think the copyright notice I'm using is incorrect for the case I described above, please let me know how it suppose to be. Thanks. friendlystar (talk)

Permission for Wikipedia use only is not enough, I am afraid. Any content we host must be available for anyone to use, commercially or non-commercially, modified or unmodified, for any purpose. This means we can only accept public domain or freely licensed media. From what you have said to me, these images, sadly, do not appear to be either, and so should be deleted. Ok, I have to clarify the licensing. It is possible the images are fit into Public domain like the Pleiades image I mentioned above . I checked the source page of that image and it doesn't state any copyright on that image. friendlystar (talk) 16:18, 24 June 2008 (UTC)

Hubble site states "Unless otherwise specifically stated, no claim to copyright is being asserted by STScI and it may be freely used as in the public domain in accordance with NASA's contract". The image above came from the Hubble site and the page does not specify additional copyright on it, though the image is based on copyrighted DSS2 data. Data cannot be copyrighted, only the way that it is presented. That would mean, according to their own copyright page, that any images created by STScI that they do not claim specific copyright on can be considered public domain- could you please ensure that images you have uploaded link to the original location of the image, the copyright page you linked to above and are tagged as PD-NASA? The issue now appears to be not that the images are non-free, but that the sourcing and copyright information is not fully accurate on our image pages. J Milburn (talk) 09:23, 28 June 2008 (UTC)

Another example of an image produced out of DSS2 data that is in public domain - File:The Witch Head nebula - IC 2118.jpg. So I'd be happy to correct license/source linking page to clear out the issue. Andromeda I copyright?

On Image talk:Andromeda I.jpg I claimed that the image is copyrighted STScI who maintain a non-commercial policy which stands in conflict with Wikipedia's OpenDocument share-share-alike policy. Here is a page providing a link to the DSS copyright here. The material used on SKY-MAP.ORG therefore shouldn't be used under Wikipedia's own policies, and we cannot produce images from that material and claim the copyright ourselves. That I believe. I think the images produced from SKY-MAP.ORG are non-free, but can be used according to Wikipedia:Non-free content criteria, because there are no other free similar images on Internet and the images are really important. So SKY-MAP.ORG might actually be in error regarding Wikipedia's policies. But the copyright belongs to the photography provider, which is covered by the DSS copyright, and derivative works cannot be claimed by other persons, since the copyright is non-free. Well, use of WikiSky's DSS images in Wikipedia is currently an open legal question. Some DSS images from other sources (i.e. NASA site) are claimed as public domain here that only adds more confusion. I'm trying not to cut more DSS images from WikiSky until the issue resolved. But WikiSky hosts many NASA's own images (i.e. Hubble, Spitzer telescopes) that no doubts are in public domain friendlystar (talk) 14:24, 7 October 2008 (UTC)

I think one of the confusions might be about the role of SKY-MAP.ORG and its web-software, but I believe the main copyright issue is clear: we want to produce a lot of derived images where the image originators claim a copyright (or in NASA's case expressively don't claim it), so the trouble will mostly be identifying the image sources. If SKY-MAP.ORG would only use NASA images, then everything would be perfect: the derived images are free for anyone, including claiming copyright. As long as ESA or other actors are involved, there might be a copyright issue. (BTW, the Andromeda I might serve well from a retouch by increasing the contrast at the faintest level – this is why I stumbled over the question in the first hand, I can do it myself – but as you say: we'll await a solution to this copyright issue). Waiting for that, I can tell you a good news: this italian site has released an OTRS permission (here) to use all its images without any distinction. You must prepare before a template like this (translate, it's easy), after that you can upload images from that site. They have a lot of very nice images of clusters/nebulae/galaxies and more! File permission problem with File:WikiSky web site.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:WikiSky web site.jpg. I noticed that while you provided a valid copyright licensing tag, the source website [7] does not have a license that is compatible with that of Wikipedia's.

Please note that "wikisky" web files are licensed for non-commercial use only [8], which is incompatible with the Wikipedia's retention/deletion policy. They do state, however, that an WP:OTRS ticket may be possibly obtained through pr@sky-map.info. Without the OTRS ticket, this image will be deleted 1 week after this notice. And yes, it's another Wikisky deletion spree - there are about 115 images from there that do not have the correct OTRS permission or licensing tags here. Rather than load you page with deletion notices, you can see the list at Category:Wikipedia files with unknown copyright status as of 21 December 2009.
