Hi Floating Boat. Not quite sure what happened between me trying to nominate this article, Purplewowies appearing to grab the nom, and then you returning to fix it − but thanks! (I obviously copied in the wrong line originally ...) Best, JG66 (talk) 06:30, 25 July 2012 (UTC)

Parameters

What are parameters?NapoleonicTrooper412 (talk) 19:49, 29 July 2012 (UTC)

They're like sections that let you type information within a template. For example, in {{Infobox|name=Napoleon Bonaparte}} name= is a parameter where you would type Napoleon Bonaparte. Floating Boat A boat that can float! 06:31, 30 July 2012 (UTC)

Usernames for administrator attention

Thanks for your report on СС³óÓã at Wikipedia:Usernames for administrator attention. As you said, there is no such username registered. However, I have warned the user who created the page User:СС³óÓã, at User talk:小小丑鱼. JamesBWatson (talk) 10:13, 30 July 2012 (UTC)

OK then. I thought it was just my computer. Floating Boat A boat that can float! 10:33, 30 July 2012 (UTC)
The userpage has also been deleted per U2. Floating Boat A boat that can float! 10:37, 30 July 2012 (UTC)
Now that I think about it, it may well be that it was a user with a Chinese name which somehow got wrongly converted to gibberish by software that couldn't cope with Chinese characters. In other words, maybe the user tried to create the page User:小小丑鱼 and it came out as User:СС³óÓã instead. However, the fact still remains that the page was purely promotional, and so unacceptable. Welcome to the Teahouse!

Hi Floating Boat! Thank you for signing up to be a future host at the Teahouse. Well, great news - the future is here: we'd love you to be a Teahouse host! Teahouse hosts do more than just answer questions. A few things we'd love to see you do as a Teahouse host:

  • First, declare your Hostness! Add yourself to the Host page! This page is where new editors and your fellow hosts can learn about you and get in touch with you easily if needed. By signing up here you declare that you know how to serve up a great cup of tea. Add yourself here.
  • Invite new users with our invite guide. Please invite new users to the Teahouse! At that guide you'll find some tips on how to invite. It's super important; we have plenty of Wikipedians answering questions, but not enough asking the questions!
  • Visit the tips page. The tips page provides you some basic tips on how to engage with visitors at the Teahouse. We have a special way of doing things - unlike other areas of Wikipedia! (Such as greeting new editors with a simple "Hi!" and being as easy to understand and friendly as possible.)
  • Join the conversation by participating on the host lounge talk pages. We also have an IRC channel now for hosts to get to know one another, develop your skills, and eventually the channel will serve as an additional help space for new editors!
  • To visit the IRC channel: #wikipedia-teahouse connect (Feel free to ask me for help if you're having trouble connecting!)
  • Participate in developing the Teahouse further by getting involved in phase two. Learn more here.

I'm so happy that you volunteered to lend a hand at the Teahouse. I look forward to following your contributions and invitations, and your assistance in making the Teahouse a great and warm place for new Wikipedians. See you there :) SarahStierch (talk) 17:30, 31 July 2012 (UTC)

The Tea Leaf - Issue Five

Stop by for a tasty glass of wiki-iced tea at the Teahouse, today!

Hi! Welcome to the fifth edition of The Tea Leaf, the official newsletter of the Teahouse!

  • Guest activity increased in July. Questions are up from an average of 36 per week in June to 43 per week in July, and guest profile creation has also increased. This is likely a result of the automatic invite experiments we started near the end of month, which seeks to lessen the burden on hosts and other volunteer who manually invite editors. During the last week of July, questions doubled in the Teahouse! (But don't let that deter you from inviting editors to the Teahouse, please, there are still lots of new editors who haven't found Teahouse yet.)
  • More Teahouse hosts than ever. We had 12 new hosts sign up to participate at the Teahouse! We now have 35 hosts volunteering at the Teahouse. Feel free to stop by and see them all here.
  • Phase two update: Host sprint. In August, the Teahouse team plans to improve the host experience by developing a simpler new-host creation process, a better way of surfacing active hosts, and a host lounge renovation. Take a look at the plan and weigh in here.
  • New Teahouse guest barnstar is awarded to first recipient: Charlie Inks. Using the Teahouse barnstar designed by Heatherawalls, hosts hajatvrc and Ryan Vesey created the new Teahouse Guest Barnstar. The first recipient is Charlie Inks, for her boldness in asking questions at the Teahouse. Check out the award in action here.
  • Teahouse was a hot topic at Wikimania! The Teahouse was a hot topic at Wikimania this past month, where editor retention and interface design was heavily discussed. Sarah and Jonathan presented the Teahouse during the Wikimedia Fellowships panel. Slides can be viewed here. A lunch was also held at Wikimania for Teahouse hosts.

As always, thanks for supporting the Teahouse project! Stop by and visit us today!

Filmnet

QbeTrue: I did add some very important information to the filmnet page, the fact that the whole system was broken already on the first opening evening and that hackers did get all software out of the decoder. If this same type of hack would have happened to your bank card the world would be to small and it would be on CNN news !. — Preceding unsigned comment added by QbeTrue (talkcontribs) 08:43, 6 August 2012 (UTC)

1. The addition of the content was unsourced and I doubt the "[piece] of the original FilmNet Cable decoder software" belongs here.
2. It had already been reverted by another editor as 'vandalism'. FloBo A boat that can float! (watch me float!) 08:51, 6 August 2012 (UTC)

QbeTrue (talk) 09:07, 6 August 2012 (UTC)QbeTrueQbeTrue (talk) 09:07, 6 August 2012 (UTC) Your performing censorship on articles and deciding what is relevant and what is not, this will give a biased view of the world !. The code is there as proof. I hope you understand my thinking.

I'm not censoring articles, I am trying to explain that you need a reliable source for the information you added. FloBo A boat that can float! (watch me float!) 09:10, 6 August 2012 (UTC)

You want a reliable source, what do you mean ?. You do not trust its the source code ? QbeTrue (talk) 09:25, 6 August 2012 (UTC)

A reliable source is one that can be trusted to provide factual information, like newspapers or other traditional media. I still don't see what the source code should be doing in the encyclopedia. FloBo A boat that can float! (watch me float!) 09:28, 6 August 2012 (UTC)
I am not in the UK, and we can't trust your own experience. FloBo A boat that can float! (watch me float!) 09:33, 6 August 2012 (UTC)

You on your own is deciding what is relevant and what is not, this is called: censorship. You make the decision what others are allowed to read and what is printed as being true, like the sovjet union newspaper Pravda. I can't make it any more true than this I am sorry. My trust in Wiki articles has driopped to about 0 due to my experiance with you, Sorry !. QbeTrue (talk) 09:55, 6 August 2012 (UTC)

Court Bauer article

The previous dispute was settled, but one of the users appears to have returned under a various assortment of names to disrupt the article once again. I have not made any edits to the page beyond reverting to what was agreed upon previously. User is using a paid proxy to post under various names/IPs, all of which have never made wiki edits until they started vandalizing the Bauer page this week. Larsonrick25 (talk) 08:56, 7 August 2012 (UTC)

How was it settled? The compromise settled on by NeilN had nothing to do with the first sentence, which was where you warred. FloBo A boat that can float! (watch me float!) 09:01, 7 August 2012 (UTC)

Speedy deletion declined: Bawesome

Hello Floating Boat, and thanks for patrolling new pages! I am just letting you know that I declined the speedy deletion of Bawesome, a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: "Being a neologism" is not a valid speedy deletion criteria, sorry. I'll send this to AfD, where hopefully it can be SNOW-closed. You may wish to review the Criteria for Speedy Deletion before tagging further pages. Thank you. — Mr. Stradivarius (have a chat) 08:45, 8 August 2012 (UTC)

I guess it's a case of me trying to find a reason to CSD it. I thought AfD would take too long. My apologies. FloBo A boat that can float! (watch me float!) 08:47, 8 August 2012 (UTC)
No worries! This is one of those cases that sends people to WT:CSD to try and think of a new speedy deletion criterion. However, "neologisms that sound like they came from Urban Dictionary" fails the objectivity test. :) — Mr. Stradivarius (have a chat) 08:54, 8 August 2012 (UTC)
If you were reviewing it you must be an admin now. Congratulations! FloBo A boat that can float! (watch me float!) 08:50, 8 August 2012 (UTC)

Lance Armstrong/YouTube

Hi Floating Boat --

I hope you are well! I was wondering if you had a chance to look at my argument for the YouTube video on the lance Armstrong page. I was considering bringing it up with the community as a whole but wanted to get your take first. I know official policy is that video is not a source, but I own the DVD form that very race and it's the broadcast footage. Shouldn't that count as reliable?

BTW, please do not read any tone into the above -- there is none. I'm relatively new here and genuinely interested in the discussion.

Thanks for your consideration.

Best,

Stlamanda (talk) 21:56, 8 August 2012 (UTC)

Well, the thing about YouTube is that it's mostly made up of user-generated content, so it would mostly be unreliable. However, there would actually be broadcasts uploaded to YouTube (like the source you cited), which could easily be sourced. Hence, citing YouTube is quite tricky, but I think your source might do. FloBo A boat that can float! (watch me float!) 05:21, 9 August 2012 (UTC)

Floating Boat, please don't take this the wrong way, but I really think you should remove a little item from your user page--"My WikiStress. Mostly because of incomprehensible Indian editors" is not funny and can easily be taken as ethnocentric. This is not the time or place to discuss the quality of different editors and edits, but you should know that there's at least a few high-quality editors from India or of Indian descent, and some of them have block buttons. Church of the month

by User:Diliff
Frauenkirche (Church of Our Blessed Lady) in Munich, taken from the tower of St. Peter's Church

Contest of the month
We currently have a remarkable lack of Wikipedia:Wikipedia-Books. Right now, Category:Wikipedia books on Christianity contains only 12 books. We certainly could have at least one book on each major grouping within Christianity. One of the challenges for this month, then, is working to put together books on relevant topics. For this month, one contest is for editors to assemble the basic Wikipedia books for each of the main topics of the extant related projects. When finished, they should their creation of the books at the main Christianity noticeboard, and at the end of the month the project will award barnstars to those who have made a significant efforts in developing this underdeveloped content.

Also this month, we are going to have have a challenge to create and improve some of our more important missing or low-quality articles. As biographies are often a bit easier, this month we are choosing two biographies: Karl Behm, which has yet to be started, and the currently Stub-class article Nerses IV the Gracious. A barnstar will be awarded to any editor who can get these articles up to DYK quality level and ultimately selected for the DYK section of the main page.

Calendar
Thie coming month (mid-August through mid-September) includes feasts dedicated to the honor of Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Bartholomew the Apostle, Nativity of Mary, and the Exaltation of the Cross.

Featured content and GA report
Since the last report, William de Chesney (sheriff), Knights of Columbus, and Angelus Silesius were promoted to GA level. Our thanks and congratulations to all those involved.

Wikimedia Foundation report

Wikinews is our sister site for developing news stories. Several events relating to Christianity, like the installation of bishops for instance, do not necessarily merit extensive coverage in wikipedia encyclopedic articles, but can and easily could be covered at greater length in a news article format. Given the number of significant news events that relate to religion, including claims of miracles, assignment of bishops and other religious leaders, church conferences, and other events, this site provides an excellent opportunity to provide in-depth coverage of current events at greater length than wikipedia.

Spotlight

One of our newer editors, User:David_FLXD, has recently gone through much of our content related to Methodism and assessed it. We are very grateful for his efforts, and that of all the editors who have had a role in developing that content. We have every reason to believe that this will make it significantly easier for the Methodism work group to create and develop content relevant to Methodism. To help that along, we certainly encourage everyone to do what they can to help David and the other Methodism editors to bring the content relevant to their tradition to the highest possible level of quality.

Teahouse talkback

Hi Float :) Thanks for kicking wiki-butt at the Teahouse! You're speedy in your responses and clear as can be. It's awesome! I do have one suggestion which you might have interest in - we have a talkback template that we created specifically for the Teahouse. That way, the editors you help can be informed that you answered their question (we've determined that most new editors have no clue about watching pages...). Some of the Hosts have created a script you can install that makes it SUPER easy to remind people, you can see it here: Wikipedia:Teahouse/Host_lounge/User_scripts#Available_user_scripts. There is also the template here, if cut and paste or twinkle addition or is your preferred method. Thanks again for all you do for the Teahouse, and Wikipedia! "Joke edit"

Welcome to Wikipedia to you too! Here's the message you left me: "Welcome, and thank you for your attempt to lighten up Wikipedia. However, this is an encyclopedia and the articles are intended to be serious, so please don't make joke edits, as you did to Easter eggs in Microsoft products. Readers looking for accurate information will not find them amusing. If you'd like to experiment with editing, try the sandbox, where you can write practically anything you want. I know you removed it, but please don't do it again. A boat that can float! After reading the reference, it was very clear that the author meant that as a joke. In other words, to make this simple, I REMOVED a joke from Wikipedia. Please take some time to review how diffing an article works and the difference between adding a joke and removing a joke. Thanks for playing around with wikipedia but until you are more familiar with the concepts of user-generated content, please experiment in your sandbox!

Don't be so harsh. Yes, I warned the wrong address. It's my mistake, and I'm sorry. A boat that can float! (watch me float!) 04:08, 3 September 2012 (UTC)

Status update - 1 year since I registered!

Wow, I can't believe it's already been a year! I still sort of remember it being the last day of summer, seeing a spelling error, thinking "I gotta fix this", not wanting to do it as an IP, registering...and then forgetting about it. I finally got around to it 4 months later!

But to make this truly a status update: it's the last day of summer again, and I gotta go back to school :( I'll have less time to help out and revert vandalism, but I'll still be around on Fridays and Saturdays (which is called a weekend over here) and, less frequently, on weekday evenings. I might also drop in on IRC from time to time, depending on how busy I am. A boat that can float! (watch me float!) 08:18, 3 September 2012 (UTC)

Removing AfD template

Welcome to Wikipedia. Please do not remove Articles for deletion notices from articles, or remove other people's comments in Articles for deletion debates, as you did with Alok Ulfat. Otherwise, it may be difficult to create consensus. If you oppose the deletion of an article, please comment at the respective page instead. This is an automated message from a bot about this edit, where you removed the deletion template from an article before the deletion discussion was complete. If this message is in error, please report it. Snotbot  t • c »  09:58, 3 September 2012 (UTC)

Well, you're a bot, so it's pointless to talk to you, but I had my reasons. A boat that can float! (watch me float!) 09:59, 3 September 2012 (UTC)

Useboxen deletion

Hi Andie. Your user subpage User:Floating Boat/Userboxen is currently popping up at Category:Candidates for speedy deletion, although there's no template on the page requesting deletion. I'm guessing there's a transclusion in there somewhere of one of the userbox pages you've recently had deleted (think I did most of those for you), but I'm not sure which one. If you've got any boxes there which transclude from an old userbox page, you may want to update them.

If you genuinely want that page deleted, say the word, but I'm guessing not... Yunshui  10:52, 3 September 2012 (UTC)

Whoops, I wanted one userbox deleted, not the whole page! I've removed a self-made userbox now so it should be fine. A boat that can float! (watch me float!) 10:55, 3 September 2012 (UTC)
Yep, seems to be gone. It wasn't an education-related userbox, was it? Wikipedia:Userboxes/Education also appears on the CSD list, and I'm wondering if the two are related. Yunshui  12:22, 3 September 2012 (UTC)
No, it was to do with my favourite colour being purple. A boat that can float! (watch me float!) 12:26, 3 September 2012 (UTC)

Hello, following a review of your contributions, I have enabled reviewer rights on your account. This gives you the ability to:

  • Accept changes on pages undergoing pending changes,
  • Have your changes automatically accepted on pending changes level 2 protected pages, and
  • Administrate article feedback.

Please remember that this user right:

  • Can be removed at any time for misuse, and
  • Does not grant you any special status above other editors.
You should probably also read WP:PROTECT, since this user privilege deals largely with page protection. As the requirements for this privilege are still in a state of flux, I would encourage you to keep up to date on the WP:REVIEWER page. Feel free to ask me if you have any questions! Happy editing! I'd already read up on protection, and I've watchlisted WP:Reviewing. Thank you Reaper Eternal! A boat that can float! (watch me float!) 13:41, 5 September 2012 (UTC)

The Tea Leaf - Issue Six

Hi! Welcome to the sixth edition of The Tea Leaf, the official newsletter of the Teahouse!

  • Teahouse serves over 700 new editors in six months on Wikipedia! Since February 27, 741 new editors have participated at the Teahouse. The Q&A board and the guest intro pages are more active than ever.
A lovely little teahouse nestled in Germany from Wiki Loves Monuments
  • Automatic invites are doing the trick: 50% more new editors visiting each week. Ever since HostBot's automated invite trial phase began we've seen a boost in new editor participation. Automating a baseline set of invitations also allows Teahouse hosts to focus on serving hot cups of help to guests, instead of spending countless hours inviting.
  • Guests to the Teahouse continue to edit more & interact more with other community members than non-Teahouse guests according to six month metrics. Teahouse guests make more than twice the article edits and edit more talk pages than other new editors.
  • New host process implemented which encourages anyone to get started as a Teahouse host in a few easy steps. Stop by the hosts page and become a Teahouse host today!
  • Host lounge renovations nearing completion. Working closely with Teahouse hosts, we've made some major renovations to the Teahouse Host Lounge - the main hangout and resource space for hosts. Learn more about the improvements here.

As always, thanks for supporting the Teahouse project! Stop by and visit us today!

Battlefield 3 Edit Request

Please look at the "Remove Zero Punctuation's 'Award'" section of the Battlefield 3 Talk page. Yahtzee's review of Battlefield 3 was removed from the page for not adequately analyzing the game and it's content and another request was put in by me to remove the "Worst Game of the Year 2011" award from it's award list for the same reason as removing the review. The argument in that section is getting a little rough and i don't want it to evolve into a flame war. 50.195.51.9 (talk) 14:35, 6 September 2012 (UTC)

I'm sorry, I don't know anything about the game or anything surrounding it, so I wouldn't be able to judge. Perhaps you can ask at WP:WikiProject Video Games. A boat that can float! (watch me float!) 08:37, 7 September 2012 (UTC)
