Proper terms and you[edit]

In regards to Juno (film), how is changing a trash tv show term, "fathered" is best, as in "In the case of 6 month old Shenqwa, you ar not the father". Please explain to me and everybody else how a proper term is bullying? Also, this is making great discussion in my university classes.

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Wfm emily strange fairuse poster.jpg)[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Wfm emily strange fairuse poster.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:27, 15 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The image was orphaned from Emily Strange by a vandal. -- Finlay McWalter | Talk 17:43, 15 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

my edit[edit]

sorry for my edit in wikipedia, made me annoy --Pablo323 (talk) 21:40, 7 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, it is easy to get annoyed at vandals who do stuff like that. For stuff like this it's often best to use the appropriate template in Wikipedia:Template messages/User talk namespace rather than composing something yourself. -- Finlay McWalter | Talk 21:44, 7 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

ßßßßßßß[edit]

German language never ever "officially dumped the "ß" as you ask on DZ Bank building, We will not make it THAT easy for the world to have all our letters on its keyeboard. The rule is rather easy - if you should be interested in German at all- when there is a long spoken vokal, as in "Straaaaße", you need a ß, when there is a short spoken vokal, as in "dass" you take two s. Have fun learnign german, yours --Bufi (talk) 21:02, 8 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

FYI[edit]

User talk:72.87.134.2 has also modified another users comments on the Juno article's talk page [1]. Not sure if that's just vandalism or a more serious violation, but thought you'd like to know. Dp76764 (talk) 03:36, 12 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

My block[edit]

Thanks a lot for bringing up my block to Rama's notice. I was offline for an hour, and was a bit shocked when I saw it :). Anyways, Thanks again. LeaveSleaves talk 09:36, 13 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Kootenay/Kootenai[edit]

Thanks for your observation on the Kootenay River: as you expected, the official name for the river in the USA is Kootenai, as you can see on this listing from the GNIS. Nyttend (talk) 12:03, 15 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks[edit]

Hi there, thanks for undoing the vandalism on my user page. I just wish I knew where on earth it came from, the IP wasn't one of my usual list of suspects! --Ged UK (talk) 19:11, 15 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi[edit]

I have put the link to our site as external links for relevant wikipages, but they have all been reverted. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Afghanvoice (talkcontribs)

It would appear that those links were removed by Lectonar (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log). You should discuss this matter with Lectonar. -- Finlay McWalter | Talk 18:20, 16 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Main Page redesign[edit]

The Main Page Redesign proposal is currently conducting a straw poll to select five new designs, before an RFC in which one will be proposed to replace the Main Page. The poll closes on October 31st. Your input would be hugely appreciated! Many thanks, PretzelsTalk! 15:02, 28 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! I see you've dealt with user: Emperordarius, that was blocked for vandalism and lack of civility. Well, he is back with another account and this time he has been careful enough to be more polite, but he is still returning to the same matters. He is denying that he is Emperordarius. Isn't that sock-puppetry? Check these: Talk: Pyrrhus of Epirus and User:EmpD++. Thank you.--Michael X the White (talk) 21:56, 12 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I see that particular account was blocked long ago. Can I be an incredible pedant in saying "no", in the proper meaning of the word "sock puppet", that's not sock-puppetry. The original (to my mind "real") meaning of "sock puppet" is as it was when I added to WP:GLOSSARY back in 2004, wherein an auxiliary account is a sock puppet if they are a) "secret" and b) intended to "manufacture support in a vote or argument." User:EmpD++ is simply a block-evading reincarnation, as the name is obviously a reference to the original (so it fails the "secret" test). -- Finlay McWalter | Talk 22:08, 18 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for cleanup[edit]

Thank you very much for cleaning up the article Shikwa. I really appreciate the gesture. Najafhaider (talk) 22:54, 19 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thankyou for your kind words. It's always nice to help with someting, particularly when it's a subject I'd never hope to encounter in a thousand ordinary lifetimes. Finlay McWalter | Talk 21:55, 18 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Agorism[edit]

I've had a go at answering your question on the Agorism article. I'm sorry for the terrible formatting, Wikipedia is not my thing. Hope my answer helped. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 149.254.192.199 (talk) 15:46, 15 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think I've ever had anything to do with that article, so perhaps you've mistaken me for someone else? -- Finlay McWalter | Talk 21:47, 18 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Guggenheim museum pic[edit]

hi, I'd like to get your permit for using Guggenheim museum pic for New York Guide book if possible. I understood your comment on the building's copyright part but I doubt if this fits in the category since the pic shows whole street. I'd appreciate if you could email me when time allows. thanks. In general, my feelings regarding such requests follow along the lines described at commons:User talk:Finlay McWalter#Stirling Station Front. If you'd like to proceed, I can be contacted via my website at mcwalter.org. If you don't, can I say that I do appreciate you asking, and having regard for copyright law on the internet; unfortunately that's not a professionalism shared by all too many organisations who should know better (McGraw Hill, Continental Airlines, the Electric Power Research Institute, and any number of holiday websites all reuse my images in violation of their licences). Finlay McWalter | Talk 21:54, 8 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks[edit]

One of the Only[edit]

Now you've gone and done it. I went off and did a bunch of them. I noticed them showing up quite a lot on pages with decidedly unencyclopedic tone, most notably pages devoted to fantasy topics such as Harry Potter and anime. (The irony of someone whose nom de Wiki is "The Monster" criticizing the writing style on articles about anime monsters is not lost on me.) In particular, the phrase "one of the only {number}" seems to be an indicator of the breathless tone typical of such articles, which are tended (as it is a logical certainty they must be) by fanatics. In fact, it's probably pointless to do anything to correct the style of those articles, as the fanatics will be offended by toning down the awesome awesomeness of this or that monster's status as "one of the only nine" to have done something or other. I don't know if I'll work that entire list like I did when I went on a jihad against "comprised of" a while back. I understand that language changes, and the newer meanings of "only" and "comprise" have been around for a while. But they oppose the existing meanings; the more they are used, the less value these words have, because one cannot be certain which of the opposing meanings is intended. If I ever do get those "one of the only" beaten down, I think the next one I'll need to go after is "intensifier unique" (like "more unique", "very unique"). Both "on(e)ly" and "unique" fundamentally mean "one of a kind". Using either to mean "one of a very small group" robs that word of its meaning. We already have "one of the few" and "intensifier rare" to use in these cases. The Monster (talk) 06:01, 26 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Google is a harsh mistress. The gigantic enormity of Wikipedia means that any mistake will not be made in isolation, but as part of a pervading metastasis. Frankly, the best attitude is one of learned apathy ;( -- Finlay McWalterTalk 17:24, 30 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

LuLouLouis[edit]

Hi there! That guy is F-A-S-T. I mean look at the timing of say his last ten edits (loosely called edits). I think you made a good call there, and I am willing to back you up. I was going to block him for a couple hours the other day, after he "edited" another users personal page, but KillerChihuahua beat me to the punch. (That's a speedy little dog BTW!) And now triple L happens to edit a bunch of KC's work. And has the temerity to plead, oh, me oh my, I was editing "the wrong page." Nothing to see here folks...move along... Regards, Hamster Sandwich (talk) 17:12, 30 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

He's evidently not new, so he'll be back; but he's plainly not Captain Subtle, so we won't be hard to spot. -- Finlay McWalterTalk 17:20, 30 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
He's from a drawer full of socks, it seems. And I'm only speedy when I'm online. I tend to miss things when I'm not here. :-P KillerChihuahua?!?Advice 20:26, 30 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Patricia Cloherty[edit]

Hi Finlay McWalter,

Sorry for the bother; I see you made some contributions to the Patricia Cloherty page and I am looking for some advice. The article has been the subject of some abuse, a single purpose username repeatedly deletes notable, verifiable content, and inserts content with a slightly derogatory bias into the biography. I'm inexperienced so I don't want to overstep my bounds. Could you check the discussion page and let me know if I am on the right track. Trying to build some consensus, etc. thanks Cgettings (talk) 04:49, 2 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Apologies[edit]

Hi. I have just returned to my laptop and visited wikipedia and i saw these message, one of which being from you. I, for one haven't been editing Kate Garraway's page though i believe one of my siblings may have used my laptop just there. I want to apologise for that but please, no more messages. I tend only to edit with facts which is not making excuses for my siblings' behaviour. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.22.198.225 (talk) 20:39, 8 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Stop deleting my questions[edit]

First,

While there is this section

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Reference_desk/Guidelines/Medical_advice#Distinguishing_between_what_is_and_what_is_not_acceptable

which says questions for medical advice should be deleted, I can find no such policy giving you the authority to remove my questions.

Second,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Reference_desk/Guidelines/Medical_advice#Distinguishing_between_what_is_and_what_is_not_acceptable

States clearly that the way I have phrased the question is fine, even if there were some guidelines about removing questions asking for legal advice--as it would likely be similar to the GLs for medical advice.

Service areas AfD[edit]

Since you expressed an opinion in the last AfD regarding UK service areas at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Donington Park services, I'd like to inform you of a new AfD discussion which has recently been started by another user at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Norton Canes services (2nd nomination). In the interests of keeping this within the rules regarding canvassing, I am sending this to everyone involved with that original debate, regardless of if they voted keep or delete, or if they appear to be active or inactive. Jeni (talk) 14:32, 5 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for fixing the problem. You know, I an illiterate on such things. Is there a good source of guidance on wiki? --JohnnyB256 (talk) 19:49, 8 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Not for that kind of problem; that was not so much a mediawiki problem as an IE+Cascading Style Sheets (and it seems you have to sacrifice virgins to Legba to know about that stuff). In that case there were several css floating elements, and floats often interact oddly (particularly on IE). -- Finlay McWalterTalk 20:04, 8 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
