Copyright problem: Daniel Ferro[edit]

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia! We welcome and appreciate your contributions, such as Daniel Ferro, but we regretfully cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from either web sites or printed material. This article appears to contain material copied from http://www.ferrovocalprogram.org/greve.php, and therefore to constitute a violation of Wikipedia's copyright policies. The copyrighted text has been or will soon be deleted. While we appreciate contributions, we must require all contributors to understand and comply with our copyright policy. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously, and persistent violators are liable to be blocked from editing.

If you believe that the article is not a copyright violation, or if you have permission from the copyright holder to release the content freely under license allowed by Wikipedia, then you should do one of the following:

It may also be necessary for the text be modified to have an encyclopedic tone and to follow Wikipedia article layout. For more information on Wikipedia's policies, see Wikipedia's policies and guidelines.

If you would like to begin working on a new version of the article you may do so at this temporary page. Leave a note at Talk:Daniel Ferro saying you have done so and an administrator will move the new article into place once the issue is resolved. Thank you, and please feel welcome to continue contributing to Wikipedia. Happy editing! Philosopher Let us reason together. 18:23, 28 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Please do not remove the {{copyvio}} template from the article. If you wish to contest the copyright violation claim, you can do so at Talk:Daniel Ferro, following the instructions provided in bullet points above. --Philosopher Let us reason together. 19:33, 28 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your willingness to rewrite this page, but I'm afraid that your rewrite continued to follow very closely on the original, including copying over many runs of text. We are not able to copy or closely paraphrase content from other publications unless one of the processes above is followed. Please see Wikipedia:Copy-paste for more information.
The article has had to be deleted. You can create a new article on this subject, but please make sure that the article is written entirely in your own words (unless you are using brief and clearly marked quotations). It seems that you may also need to review our neutral point of view policy, as I note a contributor had objected to the tone of the prior content. This is not unusual when copying material from official publications, which are naturally more interested in promoting their subjects than an encyclopedia would be. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 19:55, 10 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Thank you for your note. The problem with your temporary rewrite was that it was not rewritten "from scratch". For example, your proposed rewrite included the following text:

Upon returning to the United States, he chaired the voice department at Butler University, and later at the Manhattan School of Music. In 1972, Ferro joined the vocal faculty of The Juilliard School and continued on the faculty until 2006, when he received the distinction of becoming vocal faculty emeritus. He continues his affiliation at Juilliard by providing master classes.

This follows very closely on your source, which says:

Upon returning to the United States, he chaired the voice department at Butler University, and later at the Manhattan School of Music. In 1972, Mr. Ferro joined the vocal faculty of The Juilliard School and continued on the faculty until 2006, when he received the distinction of becoming vocal faculty emeritus. He continues his affiliation at Juilliard by providing master classes.

I have bolded the text that was precisely duplicated in your proposed rewrite, which may perhaps highlight that you are still copying from your source. This was not the extent of the problem (verbatim copying and close paraphrasing existed before and after this passage), but it may help demonstrate the issue.

While facts are not copyrightable, creative elements of presentation - including both structure and language - are. So that it will not constitute a derivative work, content must be written from "scratch", as is explained at Wikipedia:Copy-paste. The essay Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing contains some suggestions for rewriting that may help avoid these issues. The article Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/2009-04-13/Dispatches, while about plagiarism rather than copyright concerns, also contains some suggestions for reusing material from sources that may be helpful, beginning under "Avoiding plagiarism".

Alternatively, if the material can be verified to be public domain or permission is provided, we can use the original text with proper attribution, although there may be other issues that will then need correcting. Typically, Wikipedia articles should draw most of their facts from secondary sources like newspaper articles or magazine articles. While we do use official websites for some information, articles should not generally rely on these as material may not meet verifiability policy.

Please let me know at my talk page if you have any more questions about this. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 11:34, 12 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

New article[edit]

Hello Ferrovoce. I've started a new article on Daniel Ferro and I'll be filling it out over the next couple of days. Since you may have some connection with Daniel Ferro or his vocal program in Greve in Chianti, it's probably best if you leave the development of the article to an independent editor. As he is a living person, it is vital to have references to independent sources about him. I've been able to find enough for a brief biography. It could be made longer, but unfortunately many of the sources for his early career are behind paywalls or in books are only available in libraries. But it should be a viable article nevertheless. Ferrovoce = Ferro's voice[edit]

Your account has been blocked indefinitely from editing Wikipedia because it appears to be mainly intended or used for publicity and/or promotional purposes. Please read the following carefully.

Why can't I edit Wikipedia?

Your account's edits and/or username indicate that it is being used on behalf of a company, group, celebrity or other well-known individual, or organization for purposes of promotion and/or publicity. The edits may have violated one or more of our rules on spamming, which include: adding inappropriate external links, posting advertisements, and using Wikipedia for promotion. Wikipedia has many articles on companies, groups, and organizations, but such groups are generally discouraged from using Wikipedia to write about themselves. In addition, usernames like yours are disallowed under our username policy.

Am I allowed to make these edits if I change my username?

Probably not. See WP:FAQ/Organizations for a helpful list of frequently asked questions by people in your position. Also, review the conflict of interest guidance to see the kinds of limitations you would have to obey if you did want to continue editing about your company, group, organization, or clients. If this does not fit in with your goals, then you will not be allowed to edit again. Consider using one of the many websites that allow this instead.

What can I do now?

You are still welcome to write about something other than your company, organization, or clients. If you do intend to make useful contributions on some other topic, you must convince a Wikipedia administrator that you mean it. To that end, please do the following:

  • Add the text {{unblock-spamun|Your proposed new username|Your reason here}} on your user talk page.
  • Replace the text "Your proposed new username" with a new username you are willing to use. See Special:Listusers to search for available usernames. Your new username will need to meet our username policy.
  • Replace the text "Your reason here" with your reason to be unblocked. In this reason, you must:
  • Convince us that you understand the reason for your block and that you will not repeat the edits for which you were blocked.
  • Describe in general terms the contributions that you intend to make if you are unblocked.
If you believe this block was made in error, please see how to appeal a block.
