Today was just like any other day on Wikipedia for me. I was continuing with one of my own independent volunteer projects here which involved exploring the world through Wikipedia. In the recent past I had done a lot of editing related to India, from where I am and live currently. I wanted a short change. So I started my own little project that allowed me to explore the WikiWorld in an organised manner, even hoping that I could convert it into another Signpost article. So today I was in Eritrea. And lo and behold I was blocked from editing and my heart skipped a beat when I saw the huge message of the same. This is my first time that I have to request an unblock.

Hi K3, yes, more than once with different appeals. It was only when admin/sysop Yamla pinged admin/sysop Materialscientist above and linked the Block log, that I realised the importance of the CheckUser keyword. The (UTRS) appeal also clearly displays the same under 'Block reason'.

LAC is live, territory loss, non-committal and doctrine of force

User:Kautilya3, a very important retrospective quote from Takshashila's recent discussion document that acknowledges territory loss:

In spring of 2020, the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) occupied fresh territory on the Indian side of the Line of Actual Control and prevented Indian troops from patrolling where they have for several years, resulting in the deaths of soldiers on the border for the first time in 45 years. India now has a live border with China—militarised and disputed—undoing the work of several years.

This can be summarised to add weightage to the intro/lede/body of 2020–2021 China–India skirmishes. Nothing new, but a solid quote with a notable list of authors. (If I am blocked permanently please do add this if you feel it will serve the purpose.) One of the authors wrote a follow-up opinion piece with some interesting phrases. Time to axe India Today?

Sushant Singh comments on the PLA video releases and, in the article, links to the Wikipedia section B._Santosh_Babu#Death. This is the first time I have seen anybody do so.

I haven't looked at the section before. I now see that it is loaded with India Today narratives, which have been quite suspect throughout the Modi Raj. It may be time to take it to WP:RSN so that we don't get stuck in infamy. -- Kautilya3 (talk) 07:11, 16 October 2021 (UTC)

Kautilya3, B. Santosh Babu does not have too many India Today sources. Out of the 27 references, three are from India Today. However, as you point out, they have been used multiple times with a lot of content taken out from it in the section on his death. In general that article needs a lot of work to meet Wikipedia B quality standard.

I personally scan every single reference, irrespective of country and media house, against Wikipedia guidelines and policies irrespective of whether it has been flagged or not. Every Wikipedia editor has his own methods and prejudices and timelines for this. As for RSN and WP:RSP, every widely used source should go through some sort of reliability discussion, thats what RSN and RSP are for. (The reliability of the discussion about the reliability of the reference is another matter altogether, but something that Wikipedia processes are able to manage). No, this is not a "statistical" issue. Nathu La wasn't marked on the 1881 map because Gangtok didn't yet exist. (If you recall, it was just being built in 1873, as per Edgar's report.) The royals were building a new palace there, not sure why, even though Tumlong was still the capital. In 1894, the capital was shifted to Gangtok. It was only around then that Nathu La would have come into regular use.

Nathu La is a better route from the Tibetan side. But Jelep La continued to be used because Kalimpong was a better destination. -- Kautilya3 (talk) 22:37, 1 November 2021 (UTC)

I don't think these are correct. Pakistan has not defined the eastern border of its claim. Neither has China defined its western border officially. Kautilya3; Here is another source to support this diagram. pg 8. You removed the map set from Kashmir Conflict. I am adding this back with this source. Your revert edit summary stated "we need better sources for documenting "national stances""... this source covers the map. So now we have two sources for the same. To be more exact, OpenStreetMap can be mentioned/ relied upon as has been done with various OSM maps in 2020–2021 China–India skirmishes and articles such as Longju and Pangda. I am afraid you fundamentally misunderstand what the sources say. They are only depicting lines of administration, not claims. They might say XY area is also claimed by Z. But that does not mean that they know precisely Z's claim line. There are some deviations which have been noted and will be incorporated as per the other two references here. And I will remove the phrase "national stance". How about that? Kautilya3; following your mention of "official maps", here are two more links to back up this map set, specifically to back up claims. Official maps:

• Via Survey of Pakistan 2020. link Pakistan's official political map does not define the western border of Ladakh, the map set can be adjusted accordingly. While Commons does not have this specific map, other maps on Commons of Pakistan try to represent this undefined border.

• India's official maps following reorganisation link

This source from Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik also represents claims of Pakistan, India and China in different maps. They even show the undefined border. They use the same references we are using in this conversation.

To answer your question, individual maps are visually more clear in conveying claims. Further, once detail and complexities are introduced such as that Pakistan's claim in western Ladakh is not defined, presenting this all on one map makes it bulky. This is not only for readers who interact with Kashmir a lot, but for those who are seeing a map of Kashmir for the first time. It provides more visual clarity than a single map, even though both may ultimately convey the same information.

This map set does not aim to replace usage of any current maps related to Kashmir on Wikipedia. This includes the most commonly used maps-

Further, these two maps above do not intend to represent claims in the first place, other than the top one showing disputed area between India and China. It says nothing of official claims by India and Pakistan with respect to each other, also taking into account the ceasefire line. (edit though the caption could be framed in such a way, but I am laying more emphasis on visuals here)

When you say, why not in one map, there is already one in commons. However this does not show the undefined border of Pakistan. Also, compare this with the map set. The map set conveys the claims visually much faster, and can also include more complexities without making a single map too bulky.

Both Fowler&fowler and I, who have done the most writing on the Kashmir conflict issues, have always supported putting the CIA map on our pages and nothing else. Various claims that the individual countries make are of no value whatsover, except to appease their nationalist populations. If the Wikimedia tells us that we are legally required to include any claim maps, I will ask them to get the copyright released for the official maps, and then I will include them without any comment.

The DWP paper that you have cited, which is quite valuable, has an official map of the Survey of Pakistan. The only difference between that and the CIA map is that it extends the LOC across Siachen. And, we know that that is facutally false. The LOC is defined in a signed document, and it ends at NJ9842. And then the eastern border is "undefined". Why do we need a picture to say that something is undefined? It can be said in words equally well.

The Chinese claims map in the paper are reproduced from Al Jazeera, which was just made up by a journalist with no authenticity whatsoever. Newspapers are only reliable for "news", not for archivable information. -- Kautilya3 (talk) 15:03, 21 November 2021 (UTC)

Or maybe this line of thought is an emotional over-reaction based on some news headlines and it is still not notable enough according to Wikipedia guidelines and policies to create a separate article. Create a draft then. Clinically, while editing M. S. Swaminathan, this line of thought, his dream of, and his practical efforts towards, zero hunger, is so so so far away. The farmers' protest goes on. The hundreds of recommendations of the expert committees. The rankings of hunger and nutrition.
(If you're wondering what this is, it is just a reminder for myself to see if new articles are required, or if content needs to be added into existing ones. Some words I am just randomly adding and ending with which mean nothing- We know the answers. Not the solutions.)

Some other people also quizzed me about the missing China-India border. The problem is that I don't even know whom to complain to. We know that the Wikipedia's mapping engine takes months-old data from OSM. That means that it is reflecting some old data, which may now be gone. I went through the Ladakh boundary yesterday and fixed all the bugs I could find. It was quite a task. (They were not serious bugs, but it all depends on how seriously the rendering enging is taking them.) Well, it is not bugs. It is India. On Sentinel, only those pieces of the border that match with India's IB are being shown. Other bits removed. As a retaliation to India's edicts, they have also completely removed Arunachal.

On Wikipedia, we are at least seeing the state boundaries. But for Arunachal, even the state boundaries are gone.

@DiplomatTesterMan: Allow me to apologize for my intemperate outburst above. I did not get enough sleep last night. When I happened upon your post this morning, I was more cranky than usual. Having now taken a nap and hopefully, more alert, allow me to rephrase my objection.

First, I don't think you are a POV-pusher in the sense of someone who has been deliberately promoting biased content. Your article Shaheen Bagh protests in my limited cursory reading of it some time ago was an admirable attempt at being neutral and written in the best traditions of Wikipedia.

Second, Kashmir is a different type of issue. Entire nations have blind spots there, even their most liberal media. It has been that way since 1947 through liberal and conservative governments alike in South Asia.

Third, Third-party sources are needed. In my view, it is best that their descriptions, assessments, consensuses, and disagreements play out on the individual Kashmir-related pages (including their characterizations of the various national POVs) rather an in a meta essay. The reason is that the third-party sources differ on different aspects of the issue, and one essay covering the whole ground will become both rambling and confusing to a novice Wikipedia reader.

Fourth, a meta essay might also become a battleground for the various national POVs, which the Kashmir-related pages with their more limited compass might avoid becoming.

Fifth, To consider an example: contrasted with many countries in the West, nationalism came a century later to South Asia and China. The kinds of referendums and decision-making taking place in Canada (Quebec), the UK (Scotland) for a referendum for secession, West- and East Germany (for union), Czechoslovakia (for partition into the Czech Republic and Slovakia), or the Soviet Union for a devolution into the various independent countries (Slovenia, Lithuania, Ukraine, Belarus, Kazakstan, ...) are nowhere on the horizon in South Asia or China. (And even in the West, the US is notoriously more attached to territoriality than Canada.) Without restricting to third-party sources how do you even begin to characterize such antecedents on the topic of the plebiscite in Kashmir?

Sixth, How do you characterize Human Rights in Kashmir, where the various national governments do their level best to curtail the flow of information?

As RegentsPark, stated above, a "one size fits all" approach will not be fruitful.

Kashmiri Pandits... When the first exodus took place during the time of Sikander Butshiken

I think the widely cited oppression of the Kashmiri Hindus in the reign of Sikandar Shah Miri (1389-1413) deserves a brief mention in the lead, or at least in the beginning of the Background.

Juggyevil; hi; In principle (theory) I would even agree to a speedyX2 delete. But then that would/could be rash with this article (history). I do think it will be deleted though, one or two speedy/delete/keep comments will clear things up.

Imagine if Russia agrees to the emergency 11th UNGA session... and USA would then abstain right... Just make sure the circle is large enough so we don't notice the direction. DTMExplained: Deletion of Exodus of Kashmiri Hindus and AFD reason 'propaganda'

I nominated Exodus of Kashmiri Hindus for deletion (AFD) at 22:03, 3 January 2022 and wrote one word for the reason "propaganda". This was based on the article in general, how it was being edited by others during my interaction with the article, and the talk page conversations. But the AFD immediately succeeded an edit by another Wikipedia user, Fowler&fowler, where a quote (That this House commemorates with deep sadness...) was compressed and replaced by "a motion expressed in one sentence about a subject of interest of the nominator, but rarely discussed". Here both of us aren't abiding by Wikipedia policies in various way, and there is a severe lack of good faith. The current state of the article shows this lack of good faith.

Kautilya3 is correct when they wrote over at the ANI - Well, it won't be the first time somebody lost their head over Kashmir. DiplomatTesterMan, please take a break and cool off. I read this today and thank you for the comment, I did take a break. It is funny how the ANI section is titled "Compromised account".

Fowler&fowler pushed India towards a FA, I guess I should listen to that argument. My action should not have been an AFD, but a simple message pointing all this out on the talk page. I have stayed away from the article since the AFD and am ready to stay away long term in the same way I have stayed away from the article Crowd control in Jammu and Kashmir which I also nominated for deletion in 2019. Nor is it clearly not called 2022 Karnataka hijab and saffron scarves row... just thinking of the visuals everywhere. The Wikipedia users who have spent time on the Wikipedia article have given the article quite a bit of depth!

They have so many names!- Types of hijab. Reminds me of the parent articles 'Clothing in India' and 'History of clothing in the Indian subcontinent'. Oh just imagine fashion designers did a show on all this! Does this come under- Ministry of Textiles, no, from the Wikipedia article it seems this is a law and order situation. Sigh. WikiCup 2022 March newsletter

And so ends the first round of the WikiCup. Last year anyone who scored more than zero points moved on to Round 2, but this was not the case this year, and a score of 13 or more was required to proceed. The top scorers in Round 1 were:

• Epicgenius, a finalist last year, who led the field with 1906 points, gained from 32 GAs and 19 DYKs, all on the topic of New York buildings.
• AryKun, new to the contest, was second with 1588 points, having achieved 2 FAs, 11 GAs and various other submissions, mostly on the subject of birds.
• Bloom6132, a WikiCup veteran, was in third place with 682 points, garnered from 51 In the news items and several DYKs.
• GhostRiver was close behind with 679 points, gained from achieving 12 GAs, mostly on ice hockey players, and 35 GARs.
• Kavyansh.Singh was in fifth place with 551 points, with an FA, a FL, and many reviews.
• SounderBruce was next with 454 points, gained from an FA and various other submissions, mostly on United States highways.
• Ktin, another WikiCup veteran, was in seventh place with 412 points, mostly gained from In the news items.

These contestants, like all the others who qualified for Round 2, now have to start scoring points again from scratch. Between them, contestants completed reviews of a large number of good articles as the contest ran concurrently with a GAN backlog drive. Well done all! To qualify for Round 3, contestants will need to finish Round 2 among the top thirty-two participants.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of Round 1 but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Anything that should have been claimed for in Round 1 is no longer eligible for points. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. Well, spend sometime with the article. Check the basics (as per Wikipedia:Good article criteria) and make changes as needed. And then renominate. This would mean starting afresh a new nom (Wikipedia:Good article nominations/Instructions).
