Density of a super massive black hole

Hi, saw your note. I'm not sure I know how to explain it any more clearly than it is given in the lead section of the article (super massive black hole); you might want to look also at the very first section (long, old, and scrambled) on the article talk page, where I tried to deal with it last May 31, near the bottom.

The essential thing is that you have to be clear by what you mean by the volume, since density is mass divided by volume. The volume of the central singularity is nominally zero from general relativity (though we do not really understand the physics or geometry there), so from that point of view the density of all BHs is infinite. Or, you might mean the volume inside the event horizon, which is the only unambiguous "size" we can really ascribe to a (non-rotating) BH. For an ordinary 3-dimensional Euclidean sphere, that would be

V = (4/3)π r3,

but the space around a BH is definitely not Euclidean. But it is probably reasonable to suppose that the volume in there, however defined, is proportional to r3. If you make that assumption, then since the mass is proportional to r, and the volume to r-cubed, then the density, mass/volume, is proportional to r/r3 = 1/r2, which obviously decreases as r increases. So because the volume gets large faster than the mass, the average density decreases as the mass (& r ) increase. Since everything we can observe from the outside is outside the event horizon, this is about the best an external observer can do.

But inside the event horizon the density appears to be typically zero, a vacuum, since any matter there falls into the the central singularity very quickly (less than a day, for the largest BHs we have inferred from observations so far, which have a few billion solar masses). And then, at the center, infinite. So that average density, though maybe somewhat useful for an outside observer, is not really descriptive of the actual situation anywhere inside. The geometry for rotating BHs is more complex, but the situation is probably qualitatively similar.

As should be obvious, I am not really an expert on this subject, just able to recite "street knowledge" that almost every physicist knows, but I hope that helps. Wwheaton (talk) 21:41, 10 October 2009 (UTC)

Thank you; that makes the time taken to explain feel very worthwhile. Best, Wwheaton (talk) 14:04, 11 October 2009 (UTC)

Barnstar: thanks!

Thanks again. Sometimes I feel like Wikipedia is just an attractive way to waste time, but such precious tokens say otherwise. Best, Bill Wwheaton (talk) 16:27, 3 November 2009 (UTC)

Star

I know a little about stars, but almost nothing about portals. I'll try to keep an eye on it, but have very limited time, alas. Good luck! Bill Wwheaton (talk) 17:34, 4 November 2009 (UTC)

You might announce your creation, and inquire, on the Astronomy Project talk page. They have a lot of collective knowledge about what has been done, what needs doing, and how to interface most usefully. As well as knowledge about the astronomy, of course. RJHall is an editor I've consulted with a bit (on bringing his Cygnus X-1 article up to FA status), and he may have more time than I do. Good luck, anyway, and keep me posted. Your edit to Namma Metro

Your edit has been reverted, as the city's official (and most common) name remains Bangalore. As per consensus arrived at here, here and here, it has been decided to continue using Bangalore on Wikipedia till the change of name is officially notified and it comes into comon usage. Astronomy Portal picture

Hi,

The year 2009 has 53 ISO weeks. The Astronomy portal picture for 2009 Week 53 was not selected before and as a result the portal showed a red link in place of the featured picture. I corrected it with a redirect a few days back. Now the trouble is that the portal will show the same picture the next week as well. I am not sure whether you have placed the pics there according to any date significance. Could you look into this? -- Raziman T V (talk) 13:45, 31 December 2009 (UTC)

There was a bit of mess left. I have made some changes to Portal:Astronomy and Portal:Astronomy/Picture/Week 53 2009‎. Have a look. Best wishes -- Raziman T V (talk) 04:22, 1 January 2010 (UTC)

There were 2 problems:

  • The picture was being referred to earlier by {{CURRENTWEEK}} and {{CURRENTYEAR}}. Though CURRENTWEEK seems to give the ISO week, CURRENTYEAR gives the usual year. So what happened is that the portal was looking for the picture for 2010 Week 53 which does not exist. I got over this by using {{ISOWEEK}} and {{ISOYEAR}} in the portal.
  • I had not copy pasted the image from 2010 Week 1 to 2009 Week 53 - I had just redirected it. So when you changed the 2010 Week 1 picture the other got changed too. I got over this with a copy-paste.

That is all. I manage the Astronomy portal on Malayalam Wikipedia and have a look here for inputs. Best wishes -- Raziman T V (talk) 08:28, 1 January 2010 (UTC)

Nice work. It interested me that when I compute the mass loss rate of the Sun due to the solar wind (~1e8 protons/cmsq/s at the Earth) it comes out around 0.1 the rate due to mass/energy of radiated light and heat. (That's assuming the solar wind flux is isotropic, which it isn't.) I wonder what this ratio is for other stars, how it depends on spectral type for main sequence dwarfs, giants, etc. Best, Wwheaton (talk) 13:49, 13 April 2010 (UTC)

Thank you for your contributions. Please remember to mark your edits as "minor" only if they truly are minor edits. In accordance with Help:Minor edit, a minor edit is one that the editor believes requires no review and could never be the subject of a dispute. Minor edits consist of things such as typographical corrections, formatting changes, or rearrangement of text without modification of content. Edit summaries and marking edits as minor

Hi, Extra999. Please summarize your edits in the edit summary -- "see the diff" doesn't help your fellow editors. Also, please see WP:MINOR for guidelines are marking edits as minor. Replacing an image, for instance, is not a minor edit. Cheers! -- JHunterJ (talk) 11:46, 26 March 2010 (UTC)

Minor edits

Extra999, I noticed that you seem to mark virtually all of your edits as 'minor', even in cases where they are not. (For example, nominating an article for deletion definitely isn't something that should be flagged as 'minor'.) I see that JHunterJ mentioned this issue to you a few weeks ago, and I'm concerned that you haven't taken his advice. I strongly urge you to review Help:Minor edit#When to mark an edit as a minor edit. If you're not sure whether an edit should be 'minor' or not, it is always okay to leave the minor edit flag off.

Do you have 'Mark all edits minor by default' turned on in your preferences? You can – and probably should – turn it off by going to Special:Preferences (or click on My preferences at the top right corner of the page) and click on the Editing tab. Make sure that the Mark all edits minor by default check box is clear. Another feature on that screen you might find useful is Prompt me when entering a blank edit summary; if you check this box, then Wikipedia will remind you if you forget to enter an edit summary. After you have made the necessary changes, don't forget to click the Save button at the bottom of the screen. TenOfAllTrades(talk) 15:28, 17 April 2010 (UTC)

Quick barnstar how-to guide.

Per your request at NSD's talk page, I made this quick little guide template for you: You fill in the bits in bold when pasting the template

Code

{| style="border: 1px solid {{{border|gray}}}; background-color: {{{color|Background Colour Here}}};"
|rowspan="2" valign="middle" | [[Image:Image Title goes here|100px]]
|rowspan="2" |
|style="font-size: x-large; padding: 0; vertical-align: middle; height: 1.1em;" | Title of the Barnstar goes here
|-
|style="vertical-align: middle; border-top: 1px solid gray;" | Message goes here
|}

Example

So, for example, if I set the image to "Admin_Barnstar.png", the title to "The Backlog Clearer's Barnstar", and the message to "This is a test barnstar", it appears as the following:

The Backlog Clearer's Barnstar
This is a test barnstar

Hope this helps, --Taelus (talk) 11:23, 22 April 2010 (UTC)

One final note though: Remember, barnstars can only use images that are free. Non-free images are not allowed in the userspace at all at all at all. --Taelus (talk) 11:25, 22 April 2010 (UTC)

I'm not deleting the references randomly. This person has made a false claim. Not only he is not a Marja, he is not a Mujtahid in first's place, let alone being a Marja.

Dear Extra999

Two IPs were deleting name of Grand Ayatollah Hosseini Nassab from list of Marjas, and the article was protected from them. Right now, one of them has asked you to delete what he was deleting. There are a lot of references for Marjaiat of Ayatollah Nassan, such as:

  • [2],Qom Seminari (Islamic Research Center in Qom Hawza).
  • [3],Harvard University (Islamopedia).
  • [4],Baktashienews (In Iran).
  • [5],Website of Marjaas.
  • [6],Law Website (In Iran).
  • [7],Website of Shia In Iraq.
  • [8],Roozegar News (In Iran).
  • [9],Kandokash News (Iran).

There are other sources mentioned in page discussion. Thank you for your time and paying attention to this issue. Academycanada (talk) 08:38, 1 May 2010 (UTC)

None of the references you have provided are acceptable from a religious point of view. In fact, anyone can make a claim to be a Mujtahid or a Marja and announce his claim on various websites. This does not change the reality that he is not qualified to be a Marja. If this person has approval from authentic religious people or institutions, then we can discuss that. Otherwise, I can create several websites and say that he is not a Marja, and make reference to them to support my proposition.

Moved to Talk:List_of_maraji#No_42, go and respond there. --Extra999 (Contact me + contribs) 11:55, 2 May 2010 (UTC)

When is consensus bullying?

I feel as though I am being bullied out of Wikipedia when all I do for the most part is qualitatively improve articles by adding citations. I have a group of malign editors that have formed a cohort against me. They have searched really hard to find a few matters of dispute out of my 20,000 or more edits that I have made to this Project. I would appreciate some of your time.
B9 hummingbird hovering (talkcontribs) 10:20, 1 June 2010 (UTC)

I have no idea how B9HH could make the edit above to your talk page, since I indefinitely blocked him. What is even more puzzling is that this edit doesn't show up in his log, & my edit to his talk page informing him that he was indefinitely blocked is also missing from the log of edits to that page. I checked for alphanumeric tricks -- e.g., using the Greek character beta for "B" -- but from where I sit it's the same person. Time to contact the experts, who will most likely point out a simple solution neither of us considered. -- llywrch (talk) 21:54, 17 June 2010 (UTC)
Yes, someone had to point out that obvious fact to me. ;-) As to the content of the above, it's simply a rationalization for his unhelpful behavior. As discussed in the related discussion on WP:AN/I, he has been unwilling to engage in consensus building and address community input with regards to his writing style. People who have tried to discuss their issues with him either receive too much irrelevant ramblings to easily read (which has led more than one person to wonder if WP:COMPETENCE applies here) or are ignored. Yes, he has made useful contributions, but the general consensus is that being a valuable contributor only gets one so much leeway, & B9HH is not valuable enough to tolerate his misbehavior any longer.
The indefinite block I placed on his account is much less severe than the community ban originally proposed: any time B9HH wants to engage the community & work with the rest of us to improve these articles, he can. He simply needs to place a template on his talk page, convince any Admin that he understands the problems & wants to work on them, & the block will be lifted. (And some Admins might be more understanding of his situation than others.) To lift a community ban would require that B9HH directly appeal to the ArbCom in an action similar in some ways to a hearing -- the ArbCom has its own specific rules of procedure, & remedies it will offer -- & even then they may decide to decline to allow him to return & edit.
Now, if you want me to discuss in detail his allegations... well, that is another matter entirely. He has had his opportunity to make his case many times. From what I found, there is no "group of malign editors that have formed a cohort against" him -- simply a number of other editors attempting to discuss his edits & being frustrated with his unproductive responses. Any criticism he encountered could have been handled quite easily by simply engaging in a conversation with them: talking with other editors, listening to them, & considering that one might be wrong. -- llywrch (talk) 16:15, 23 June 2010 (UTC)

userspace links

Hi- please don't add links to your userspace (or any other userspace) in an article that is in mainspace. Here's an example. The guideline is given at WP:UP#COPIES: "One should never create links from a mainspace article to any userpage". tedder (talk) 15:07, 26 June 2010 (UTC)

Please see this point 'How to create a barnstar'. --Extra 999 (Contact me + contribs) 07:04, 27 June 2010 (UTC)

You're saying that one example proves it wrong? WP:BS is not in the mainspace. (I'll watch your page for a while, so the tb isn't totally necessary unless I don't respond) tedder (talk) 11:28, 27 June 2010 (UTC)

You are now a Reviewer

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, is currently undergoing a two-month trial scheduled to end 15 August 2010.

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under pending changes. Pending changes is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial. The list of articles with pending changes awaiting review is located at Special:OldReviewedPages.

For the guideline on reviewing, see Wikipedia:Reviewing. Being granted reviewer rights doesn't change how you can edit articles even with pending changes. The general help page on pending changes can be found here, and the general policy for the trial can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. —DoRD (talk) 14:53, 22 July 2010 (UTC)

Portal:astronomy

Hello, I noticed you did some work with Portal:Astronomy. I have recently given Portal:Human spaceflight a facelift, and I was planning on doing the same for Portal:Astronomy. Namely, I was planning on replacing Article of the Month and Picture of the Week with "Selected Article" and "Selected picture", and have them generate a new one each time the page is reloaded. Do you have any objections, or comments? thanks, Mlm42 (talk) 01:08, 5 August 2010 (UTC)

Great; I've added the most recent 4 pictures so that they are randomly cycled through the portal page. More can be added, and the layout is also easily changed. Mlm42 (talk) 01:54, 5 August 2010 (UTC)

Valued Pictures was closed =(

This is as far as I'd gotten to a new logo I was making to suggest to replace the old one shown below, as you can see it's only about half-way done. The idea was shells, which were used in ancient times as money all over the world in spite of geographical isolation, tying into Valued Pictures.

The deed was done by SilkTork not many hours ago after a contentious dispute between over a dozen users on VPC's talkpage, some wanted to keep it, some wanted to delete it. Some wanted to make it historical, some never understood its purpose, but it is my opinion that VPC was very misunderstood and had a potential to be very important and possibly even resolve problems we have with the similar Featured Picture Candidates (FPC) and the connected Picture of the Day projects.

If VPC never rises again then may it rest in peace, the rest of us will just be on the ever persnickety FPC page. --I'ḏOne 10:29, 16 August 2010 (UTC)

I've reversed that crazy unilateral action, if we're going to shut it down it's going to come after an official MfD, not some convoluted long disjointed discussion on the talk page. — raekyt 12:13, 16 August 2010 (UTC)
