on this article, which I created (that IP is me), you can see that the next VCSAF wears a gold letter N on his NDOSM, what about creating such a graphic? I mean like for "other_device=n|", because I think we will see quite some more of these in the future... Sent this to GeckoG as well. Unfortunately, I have no idea how to do it myself...

ArbCom Elections 2016: Voting now open!

Voting in the 2016 Arbitration Committee elections is open from Monday, 00:00, 21 November through Sunday, 23:59, 4 December to all unblocked users who have registered an account before Wednesday, 00:00, 28 October 2016 and have made at least 150 mainspace edits before Sunday, 00:00, 1 November 2016.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

Orders, decorations, and medals of the Russian Federation

Hi! Salut! Guten tag... Thanks for partially fixing the mess created with the title of the article Awards and decorations of the Russian Federation. I don't know why it was changed to Russia and then only partially brought back to Russian Federation, but the awards are those of the Russian Federation. Either somebody is having fun, doesn't understand the difference between the Russian Federation and the Commonwealth of Independent States, or this is vandalism... But the title was correct, and is now wrong. The article should either be called Orders, decorations, and medals of the Russian Federation or List of Orders, decorations, and medals of the Russian Federation. I've seen articles where you could change the coding but then somebody else had to OK the changes for them to take effect and be visible to the general population, what is the procedure to start such a protocol? Howdy Sir!. I moved it back to this page name figuring that it was back closest to a consensus name. The page was originally moved to List of orders, decorations, and medals of Russia on 4 March 2014 [1]. I think this was primarily done to follow the WP:COMMONNAME for Russia. Then the page was moved to Orders, decorations, and medals of the Russia to match the consistency for other country's ODM articles. However, the sloppy addition of the article hosed that up. I am sorry I did not notice it sooner. If you think we need to move it further from "Russia" to "Russian Federation" to promote better understanding of the article's subject matter, I could be convinced of that. However, at this point I don't see where one could be confused about the subject matter. EricSerge (talk) 02:20, 23 December 2016 (UTC)
As I stated in a few other places, naming these articles with RUSSIA vice RUSSIAN FEDERATION is, in my humble opinion, a political statement akin the way people used to call the USSR Russia or Soviet citizens Russians. Every single establishment decree and order, every single award criteria I translate from the Kremlin or Russian Gazette web sites (among multiple others) specifically say Russian Federation. RUSSIAN FEDERATION is coined on the reverse of every single medal (see photo below). This is the same as naming the article Orders, decorations, and medals of the Soviet Union to Orders, decorations, and medals of Communist Russia. You talk of a consensus. Funny that after creating and upgrading so many articles on the subject over many years on three different language Wikis that I learn of this like this. Don't you find it a bit odd to name the articles with RUSSIA when every single sentence in the entire articles don't? Fdutil (talk) 18:30, 23 December 2016 (UTC)

Yeah, the inconsistency between the different language Wikipedia projects can be staggering at times. I suppose it is the difference in the organic growth of the policies and practices of the different editor cohorts. Here is what I see from my point of view. Russian Federation is the same as calling the US the United States of America. Sure, United States of America is the full name of the country but most times United States is used for brevity. In looking at a United Nations list [2] you can see what I am talking about. They list the full official name of the countries, but put the short name or common name in boldfaced type. Hi again. I believe you 100% when you say you have no agenda on the matter, that's why I contacted you. I knew when I opted to share my years of research here vice publishing books or doing my own extensive web sites would open everything to each of the Earth's individual would be editor but I must admit at feeling quite frustrated at times. Like when morons using on line translators believe they are actually improving on serious work from multilingual researchers... When individuals with political agendas change Russian "motherland" or "homeland" to "fatherland knowing darn well this is wrong. *SIGH* Merry XMas! I'll crawl back under my rock... Got a question for you. Do you know many people on Wiki who can make changes that do not show up in the article history? Some joker just changed 2 page titles and related links in other articles but the changes do not appear anywhere. Fdutil (talk) 04:12, 25 December 2016 (UTC)

March Madness 2017

G'day all, please be advised that throughout March 2017 the Military history Wikiproject is running its March Madness drive. This is a backlog drive that is focused on several key areas:

  • tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
  • updating the project's currently listed A-class articles to ensure their ongoing compliance with the listed criteria
  • creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various task force pages or other lists of missing articles.

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the military history scope will be considered eligible. More information can be found here for those that are interested, and members can sign up as participants at that page also.

The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 March and runs until 23:59 UTC on 31 March 2017, so please sign up now.

Converting DLA/DOD five-digit color codes into RGB values

Howdy! How do you read the five-digit color codes found on DOD/DLA PDFs and convert them into RGB (or hex/PMS) values? – Illegitimate Barrister (talk • contribs), 04:50, 26 February 2017 (UTC)

I found a resource somewhere in the ether of the interwebs that converted the cable color codes to the PMS colors. I am at work at the moment and if I remember that resource is blocked from here. I will see if I can find it for you later today. BTW, nice job on the PNG --> SVG conversions. I could never figure out how to do the SVG nicely. EricSerge (talk) 13:30, 26 February 2017 (UTC)

Odd, I used that as a basis and followed the DLA's specifications in making this ribbon, but the end result looks all wrong for some reason. Don't know why that is, since that page's colors and the DLA specs look great for other ribbons. Yeah that doesn't look right at all. When you look at the streamer dimensions below they match what you typically see for the ribbon. That's odd how out of whack the spec sheet is to what is actually produced. EricSerge (talk) 21:59, 27 February 2017 (UTC)
Okay, I used the streamer's dimensions and it looks much better, more like the ones in photographs. However, the shade of gold looks really weird, even though it's what's prescribed on the specs sheet. I suppose when seen in person, printed on fabric with light shining on it, it'll probably look different from what it'd look like on an LCD monitor. – Illegitimate Barrister (talk • contribs), 02:32, 28 February 2017 (UTC)
There is color shift due to lighting and the Moiré patterning. Perhaps the conversion sheet is off? If you search Wikipedia you find Old gold and by the RGB you come up with this: [4]. That looks closer to reality. EricSerge (talk) 02:41, 28 February 2017 (UTC)
Hmm, the color page you linked to me says Old Gold is PMS 871. I put PMS 871 onto the official Pantone website and it gives me this, which is what I'm using in the SVG. – Illegitimate Barrister (talk • contribs), 02:44, 28 February 2017 (UTC)
I got PMS 871 when I looked on that sheet. However, I see that if you search for "Old gold" on pantone, it comes up with two different colors: [5] [6]. So much for color being a science? EricSerge (talk) 02:51, 28 February 2017 (UTC)
Oops, that was a typo. Meant to say PMS 871, not 539. Anyway, I used the "Federal Standard" system's number given on that page and it looks much closer to the real thing. I guess the page might have its PMS number out of whack. I wish I could say that's the end of it, but different webpages are giving me different shades of gold for the same Federal Standard color number. For example, this and this are the same FS595 number, but have different RGB values. From what I hear, there's no way to 100% accurately convert FS-595 to RGB? If that's the case, then I'll just pick one of the RGB values and run with it. – Illegitimate Barrister (talk • contribs), 03:07, 28 February 2017 (UTC)

Question

Hi. I noticed that in the captions to ribbons on recent Australian Honours pages you have described them as "undress" ribbons, and I wondered why? Thanks in advance, Pdfpdf (talk) 08:15, 12 June 2017 (UTC)

@Pdfpdf: Perhaps you know better than I. It was my understanding that was a common way to refer to a "ribbon bar" or "service ribbon" through out the Commonwealth, following the British usage of the term since ribbons are worn in lieu of medal when in "undress" or a uniform that is less than full dress. I believe at that time I had recently been working with a source that referred to them as undress ribbons. EricSerge (talk) 16:07, 12 June 2017 (UTC)
I sincerely doubt I know better than anyone on the topic!! It's my (imperfect) understanding that "ribbon bar" and/or "service ribbon" is how it's referred to throughout the Commonwealth (etc.) - i.e. I am unfamiliar with, and have never heard of, the terminology "undress" ribbon. If you have no objection, I'd like to remove the word "undress". If you do object, can you supply a supporting reference (that we can quote to others)? Thanks, Pdfpdf (talk) 10:51, 13 June 2017 (UTC)
Without objection. In scratching around the sources I was using were British or Canadian more than likely. If ribbon bar is a better common name for use in reference to Australia, then by all means, change it up. Cheers. EricSerge (talk) 12:41, 13 June 2017 (UTC)

Pierre de Villiers

Cher Eric,

en regardant cette photo, j'ai noté encore une décoration du Général de Villiers (voir croix en bas, à droite). Le ruban est rouge, comme tu vois, avec 2 thin black stripes on each end. J'ai vu des français sur Wiki qui ont la croix de valeur militaire du Zaïre, est-ce la bonne décoration?

Henry H. Arnold

Cher Eric,

Bonjour!

Merci d'avoir identifié le ruban de la McKay Trophy pour Arnold. Mais il n'a pas reçu la médaille du mérite militaire, 1ère classe, mais l'ordre mexicain du mérite (militaire), chevalier d'après la photo. En tout cas, vous pouvez bien voir le ruban correspondant sur la photo d'Arnold. Il est tout noir, avec au milieu, verticalement, rouge-blanc-vert (couleurs du drapeau). Si vous pourriez créer ce ruban, car moi, je ne sais malheureusement pas du tout comment le faire.

Gulf War military awards

Hello Eric - thank you for reverting my edit to Gulf War military awards where I screwed up the application of anchors. I can't explain why I didn't check it properly before I pressed save. ArbCom 2017 election voter message

Hello, EricSerge. Voting in the 2017 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 10 December. All users who registered an account before Saturday, 28 October 2017, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Wednesday, 1 November 2017 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

2017 Military Historian of the Year and Newcomer of the Year nominations and voting

As we approach the end of the year, the Military History project is looking to recognise editors who have made a real difference. Each year we do this by bestowing two awards: the Military Historian of the Year and the Military History Newcomer of the Year. The co-ordinators invite all project members to get involved by nominating any editor they feel merits recognition for their contributions to the project. Nominations for both awards are open between 00:01 on 2 December 2017 and 23:59 on 15 December 2017. After this, a 14-day voting period will follow commencing at 00:01 on 16 December 2017.
