Map of Sumer[edit]

You asked about my map of Sumer. Yes, it is one I prepared myself from multiple sources, including a base map from Bartholemews World Atlas, and the Times ATlas of the World, supplimented from various historical atlases.

Map of Australia inaccurate[edit]

I believe you inserted a map of Australia which phases through several dates. The map of 1859 in wrong. Although Queensland was established on that date, its border was moved to its current position in 1862. I inserted a comment on the discussion page.Alan Davidson 13:47, 20 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ukrainian elections[edit]

Hi! If you have time, could you take a look on Ukrainian presidential (1991, 1994, 1999, 2004) and parlamentary elections (1994, 1998, 2002, 2006), and referendums (1991, 2000) probably to make them a little more standardized. Also, do you think, it's worth to keep Elections in Ukraine and Referendums in Ukraine separately, or they need to be combined? Thanks! --23:40, 1 November 2006 (UTC)

mystery[edit]

Here is a mystery. My watchlist shows a change to Image:Orthographic projection centred over Pitcairn Island.png. It actually shows that you just uploaded this map. But it looks identical to the map of the same name I created and uploaded on July 21 2005. Do you know what happpened? Did the map I created get deleted, by accident, or design?

Cheers! -- Geo Swan 23:31, 4 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Just to let you know, Privacy's original edit ([1]) was much more drastic (putting the "areas of special sovereignty" into the "dependent territories" section) and I kept reverting his edits because he kept calling them reverts (and so I did not notice that they were, in fact, not proper reverts).  OzLawyer / talk  01:08, 5 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think we need the whole "also rendered as" thing you just added, since the footnote was created to remove the need for such statements in the list itself.  OzLawyer / talk  14:01, 7 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

BTW, you haven't chimed in over here, which is a poll that might end up having implications for templates and lists of countries all over Wikipedia (although I certainly hope not).  OzLawyer / talk  14:08, 7 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Electoralgeography.com[edit]

You wrote: "Someboudy added links to the site Electoral geography and you removed these links calling it spam. Why do you consider that site spam?"

When a user adds nothing to Wikipedia except external links to a single site (see [2]), it is pretty much a given that it is the site owner doing so, which constitutes spam. At least one other editor saw it the same way and asked the user to desist; seeUser Talk:71.227.197.41. Feel free to re-add the links: since you are not the site owner, your adding of the links would not amount to spamming. -- Mwanner | Talk 13:23, 14 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wow! OK, I am the owner of the website and I did add the link to it. So, can I just ask my brother to add my website for me so that it would not be considered spam? Or can I just do it from his computer? By the way, my website has no commercial value, I pay for hosting and maintanance from my own pocket and do the work in my own free time.

map galleries[edit]

Electionworld, you have been told repeatedly that your galleries of maps belong on commons:. I have created Swiss cartography as an example for an encyclopedic article on maps (which belongs on Wikipedia), and the associated gallery page commons:Maps of Switzerland, which belongs on commons. Could you please transwiki your galleries to commons in the same way? dab () 16:27, 15 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

what do you mean "complete"? the galleries are completely random collections of anything that just happens to be on the servers. This is what categories are for. I point you to Wikipedia:Image_galleries#Policy, in particular:
  • Galleries are generally discouraged.
  • Mainspace gallery pages must be titled (e.g.) "Gallery of the Kings and Queens of Great Britain".
  • The gallery tag format is discouraged in mainspace in favor of better-looking, more flexible formats.
  • Categorize all gallery pages in Category:Image galleries or its subcategories.
now I really do not see what is wrong with doing exactly what you have been doing here on commons, where people will thank you for the useful contribution. If images you want aren't on commons, this probably means they are not free, and shouldn't be in the gallery in the first place. Now if you must have a gallery of Maps of Gabon in Wikipedia namespace, per policy you should name it Gallery of maps of Gabon, not Maps of Gabon, which should be an article on maps of Gabon not an image collection. dab () 07:53, 16 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
yes, per Wikipedia:Image galleries, an article "Gallery of maps of Switzerland" would be acceptable (but still discouraged), and I assure you I will not mess with your galleries on articles titled "gallery" and categorized under Category:Image galleries. regards, dab () 09:07, 17 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
you are aware, of course, that you can always go back to earlier versions? So even if I made Maps of religions a redirect, and you want to recover the earlier gallery, you simply go to the history tab and pick the version you want. I did not delete anything, nothing was lost, don't worry. dab () 10:11, 17 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I did two moves, because I found thematic map only after the first one, the history is here, take it easy. dab () 11:36, 17 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Helping on the atlas...[edit]

I'm eager to help with this excellent project. I have seen your steps but am not sure how to best help without interfering with your process.  :) I could add images from the UT database or another database....or I could just add extra maps from wikipedia and look for typos as I have been. So, can you help a bit: in Grand Duchy of Finland the map is way too big for the template, and I would like to add LocationFinland, but the borders have changed. Can you draw Karelia and Salla to the LocationFinland, the changes are shown in Moscow armistice. (the northernmost place Petsamo wasn't Finland back then and therefore musn't be drawn). commons Atlas of Germany[edit]

Nice work on the commons atlas. The new design has some potential. I am currently in the middle of converting my PNG maps to SVG format, some of which I have already placed on the commons (my commons page). Regarding the Prussian province maps, apart from converting them to SVG, I'm not too happy with the colour scheme any more, so I'm working on something else. But I will upload all future maps directly to the commons if you like.

I had not yet placed all of my maps on the old Atlas page (my gallery), and many more maps I have not yet made (location maps for the other former German states). While not a native speaker of German, I can probably help with some of the translation work. - 52 Pickup 13:55, 22 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Maps update[edit]

OK - I am posting my maps on Commons on a regular basis as I create them. I also discovered the Atlas - and added some in the appropriate places. I will work on the country sub-level maps I created in English Wiki to get them over into Commons. From what I can tell, the list is about 18 countries long (!). If you are already working on some of them, let me know so we don't duplicate our efforts... Take care. Rarelibra 21:07, 28 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Request for admin review: user:coelacan violations by ad-hominem attack[edit]

I respectfully request an investigation for violations of WP:NPA and WP:CIVIL by coelacan. coelacan, at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Coelacan/backpage maliciously and falsely attributed that I stated that treif is kosher:

"Eating pork is kosher.... You have been so advised. Be guided accordingly." — Nkras, on kashrut and the Talmud [6]

I replied to coelacan's distortion, and that editor added this:

"Learn how to quote accurately and in context. I removed a selectively edited quote on your user page that resulted in an intellectually dishonest presentation of one of my arguments." — Nkras, on new developments in Talmudic scholarship (and vandalism of the preceding quote) [7] [8]

Here is the original quote:

" "Same-sex marriage" is not a subset of marriage, because it is not marriage. It is a wholly fabricated construct. Members of the same sex cannot get married, because they are not of the opposite sex. To demand the inclusion of "same sex marriage" in the Marriage article is pushing a political and social agenda, is the destruction of language, and an attempt to push a POV that is already evident in the Same-sex marriage article. As a compromise, I will agree to the inclusion of a section about "Redefinition of Marriage" where references to "same-sex marriage" can exist, subordinate to the intent of the article. I will not agree to any "consensus": a group of editors could reach a consensus that eating pork is kosher, though it remains treif. The editors may think they are correct because they have reached a consensus - and they would be wrong nonetheless. Destroying language and the definition of marriage is not acceptable under any circumstances. "

Coelacan, therefore, perpetrated a lie. The quote was altered to distort its original meaning, was intended as a retributive insult or attack, and its result is a Jew-bashing slur.

She arrogantly demands that I follow the "rules", but does not follow them herself. WP:CIVIL and WP:NPA has not been enforced against coelacan. coelacan is an extremely agressive and retributive editor, and research into her interactions with other editors will prove this. Is the editor somehow exempt from the rules, and from being held responsible for her violations and manipulations of policy?

I do not seek to reinvolve myself in Wikipedia, but that coelacan be held accountable for her actions for posting and continuing existence of her retributive Jew-bashing slur. The two quotations should be removed from her user space; coelacan must end her use of purposeful manipulation of policy; she must be held fully accountable for her distortion of statements; and discontinue her ongoing violation of WP:CIVIL and WP:NPA with impunity. That I am banned from Wikipedia does not change the status of coelacan's violations of policy. I ask this in the name of fundamental fairness and common decency. Sincerely, nkras 63.228.55.117 20:01, 21 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there,

I've been working on a new template that you might find useful, and I'd be interested in any feedback. With {{Polparty}}, you can give a country and a political party, this template will give an abbreviation that links to the entry on that party. I made it to help with geographical infoboxes, but it might have other uses. At the moment, it supports only a couple of countries - but if it's worthwhile, it can be gradually expanded upon. - 52 Pickup 15:26, 26 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Wikimedia atlas[edit]

Hello! I've noticed you uploaded

for Wikimedia atlas. I'd like to point out that the caption ("France under German occupation, 1940-1944) and the map does not make clear that Germans invaded the southern zone (so-called "free zone") in November 1942. It also does not concord, concerning Italy's occupation, with this map here which seems to be taken from a Terminale history course (last year of high school, just before the baccalauréat). The "area administrated from Brussels" is described in the following map as "forbidden area. Under the military administration of Brussels" (my emphasis) (while the "area intended for German settlement" is described as "area forbidden for return of refugees (sorry for translation!). German agricultors were supposed to settle there." (no problem on that one). All in all, Adam Carr's map is lot better than the one which preceded, but it's a shame he forgot to legend the white part and make clear the distinction before & after November 1942. And the part on Italy has also been overlooked. For these reasons, although I think the map is perfectly appropriate, for the time being, for the Wikipedia article, I don't think it should be included on Wikimedia atlas. Cheers! Dutch parties templates[edit]

I reverted your undiscussed merger of the Dutch parties templates here and here. Please join in the discussion here. C mon 20:48, 29 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Electionworld, I believe that the correct name for the template could be Template:Political parties in the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, because the confusion between WS as a disputed territory, and the SADR as a self-declared govt-in-exile is something that has stirred tension lately on many articles related to WS. The Polisario is a political party working in the framework of the SADR not WS. Otherwise, the other Moroccan political parties functioning in WS and animated by Sahrawis are also eligible to be included under political parties in WS. I wont contest your edits on the Template:Belgian political parties but I don't think a nine hour wait is the way to create consensus for an edit on such a contested template. C mon 22:17, 1 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I can see, that in an earlier stage the party has expressed its wish to be translated as "Free Democratic Party of Switzerland", but the name of the article remains as "Free-thinking Democratic Party of Switzerland". So, if their own wish doesn't count, I'd like to support the translation "Radical Democratic Party" (from French) instead of "Free-thinking Democratic Party" (translated from the German name). Many sources, such as Swissinfo, use as an English translation "Radical Party" or "Radical Democratic Party". I think this would be a better solution, as "Free-thinking" in English refers more often to a religious than political position.--82.181.26.77 23:43, 6 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

flagicon[edit]

previous discussion copied from User talk:Andrwsc

I restored some of the Country data templates you deleted today. The deleted templates were useful in enabling to use in lists the flag template for entities that do not have an own flag. These kind of templates exited allready for other entities, see e.g.  Wake Island. So please do not delete these templates. Electionworld Talk? 18:37, 27 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I disagree. They are not necessary for items where an existing flag template exists. Our convention in Wikipedia:WikiProject Flag Template is to add new templates only for flags not already present under this system. On my "to do list" is cleanup all those US island templates, so those will be going soon too. As a side note, I had certainly noticed that I had created redlinks on your sandbox article, and I had already done some work to fix that, but you were in the middle of some edits yourself. Please see User:Andrwsc/list, where I saved a copy of the changes I made to fix those redlinks. Andrwsc 18:43, 27 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I see we disagree, but I really see advantages. Is there a consensus on the convention you refer too, If yes, I will accept that, if not, we have to see further. BTW, could you react to my talk page. I missed your reaction for 10 minutes, in which I restored the other templates too. Electionworld Talk? 19:00, 27 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I can't quickly point to any single discussion thread, only to the massive cleanup work that User:Ligulem and I undertook several months ago when we re-vamped the whole flag template system. Literally thousands of pages in the template namespace were deleted. Our intent was to simplify this system and make it manageable. I have been working hard on the maintenance of these templates for several months now, and am currently working on an improved documentation system. My experience is that we can't let the proliferation of wikicode options spiral out of control. That is why, for example, we introduced the name= template parameter, so that editors weren't forced or tempted into creating dozens of additional name variants to suit individual article needs. The standard templates work perfectly well. I see a parallel situation here, with the same flag icon used for multiple articles. We should stick to a single flag icon template call for those limited-use instances.
I strongly urge you to reconsider the need for these additional territory templates, when using {{flagicon}} with the main nation is perfectly sufficient, and a commonly used technique in many, many other wikipedia instances. And if I can help your work in progress (by fixing the redlinks I caused), let me know and I will be glad to do that, recognizing that it isn't very fair for me to impose work on you! Thanks, Andrwsc 19:12, 27 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

नेपाल राज्य, Romanization[edit]

नेपाल राज्य is "Nepal Rajya" ("Kingdom of Nepal"). utcursch | talk 12:40, 16 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, "Rajya" doesn't necessarily mean Kingdom. It is also used to refer to a state. I'm not sure about what is the official name of the country. The Government website simply calls it "Nepal"[6]. utcursch | talk 14:44, 16 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry to have "templated" you; I see you are an established editor. However, I have submitted this article for speedy deletion since it purports to be a test article. --Metropolitan90 07:30, 21 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello![edit]

Hello Electionworld! Let me ask you a question: Why are you interested in Nepal? RS2007 04:47, 27 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

New country_data templates[edit]

Hi, when creating new templates, can you please only include the standard parameters and omit the unused ones? Specifically, unless you are using them with a national sports team, you do not need the altlink parameter. Thanks, Andrwsc 04:08, 30 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The other things you need to do are make sure the alias parameter points to a true article name and not a disambiguation page or a redirect, and check to see if existing templates exist for the flags you are adding. I'm trying to make sure that no duplicates exist.

I'm in the middle of re-writing the documentation for the flag template system to help new template authors, so I'll let you know when I'm done as your feedback would be helpful. In the meantime, if you have any other questions, feel free to ask! Thanks, Andrwsc 04:28, 30 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

RE: List of sovereign states > UK[edit]

Hello. I merely embellished the UK entry with the addition of flags. Hopefully, this will quell editors who insist on including the UK's constituent countries while not really doing so. And, no, I do not think that means we'll have to add the 50 U.S. states (for a federal entity), autonomous communities of Spain (for a quasi-federal entity), et al. Besides, no others are referred to as 'constituent countries' by name. :) As for those who may contest our efforts, bring them on. And thank you for taking leadership regarding these lists: they're much better as a result. Quizimodo 13:53, 31 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for expressing you opinion. Anyway, can you help us in improving the article? I started the article but I acknowledge that it needs some improvement, notably references.
Secondly I would like to ask you what do you think about starting an article about national liberalism. It is not a very oft-used concept, but it is a little bit interesting (see for instance this): do you think that it deserves an article too? --Checco 19:44, 24 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, thank you. I will talk about it (national liberalism) with Nightstallion and C mon, and we'll see what we can do. Oviously if there will be a national liberalism article, we would ask you what you think about it, then. --Checco 22:31, 24 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This is a courtesy notice. Chadian template[edit]

Your template worries me a bit; you see, the parties you placed there (already a lot) is only a small fraction of a full list of legal political parties in Chad, which would include no less than 70 parties. As such a number can't be included, this template rises some problems, at least I think. How do you see it?--Aldux 22:27, 26 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes it could be a solution, but this poses another question: if we limit it to parliamentary parties, than we must exclude the UDR and the PLD, two important parties which boycotted the last elections. But probably there isn't any other solution. Ciao,--Aldux 22:40, 26 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

serbian political parties deletion[edit]

A great many articles on Serbian political parties have been proposed for deletion via PROD as being unsourced: they are listed at [8] under January 26. And they are in fact unsourced, and I do not have the knowledge to source them. you added them, you must have had soime source., All that's necessary to do is have some source that shows more than just mere legal existence, add it, and remove the prod tag, with an edit summary saying you're addingq a source. As you know, any language will do, print or online. DGG ( talk ) 23:47, 27 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Bucklin[edit]

You may be interested to know that there is a dispute about the Bucklin voting page ongoing. The issues are:

  1. Can the term "Bucklin voting" comprehend systems which allow equal and/or skipped rankings?
  2. If so, do such systems meet the IIA and Clone independence criteria?

(One possible answer to either question is that we can't say either way because we don't have relevant citations to reliable sources. In that case, we must choose what we can say.)

Your participation in the discussion might help us attain consensus.

MSU Interview[edit]

Dear Electionworld,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the communityHERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your nameHERE instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar --Jaobar (talk) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Chlopeck (talkcontribs) 23:17, 14 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The article LPNA has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

no refs for 3 years; no seats documented....

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. A tag has been placed on Democratic Party of the Virgin Islands, requesting that it be deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under two or more of the criteria for speedy deletion, by which articles can be deleted at any time, without discussion. If the page meets any of these strictly-defined criteria, then it may be soon be deleted by an administrator. The reasons it has been tagged are:

If you think that the page was nominated in error, contest the nomination by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion" in the speedy deletion tag. Doing so will take you to the talk page where you can explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but do not hesitate to add information that is consistent with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you.
