St-Jean Chiefs to Saint-Jean Chiefs[edit]

Hi Earl, I was about to move the title "St-Jean Chiefs" to "Saint-Jean Chiefs" and there was an error message not to move. On the St-Jean Chiefs article, it shows little information and the article is a stub. No requested move is needed. So, go to the St-Jean Chiefs article and move the new title from "St-Jean Chiefs" to "Saint-Jean Chiefs" to match the related titles that has "Saint-Jean" for e.g. "Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu". sorting[edit]

Fyi... in biographies, you don't have to add sort values to categories. Example: [[Category:Curlers from Ontario|Anderson, Mike]]

The DEFAULTSORT parameter will set the sort value for all categories, provided it comes before the categories. Only if you wish to override the DEFAULTSORT value, do you add a sort value in a category. DEFAULTSORT is a requirement in biographies, but not other articles.

MSU Interview[edit]

Dear Earl Andrew,


My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community HERE, were it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.


So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.


Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. Brier articles[edit]

Hey Earl! An editor has moved the Brier articles from "#### Tim Hortons Brier" to "#### The Brier," with reason "rm sponsor name from title of article." Is there any basis for this? Curlers and sort[edit]

I see you creating alot of curling articles about people. Just a FYI to save you some typing. You don't have to add the sort value to every category. If you add DEFAULTSORT, all the categories will use that value for their sort value. The only time you add a sort value to a category is when you want to override the DEFAULTSORT value.

Brier[edit]

Hey Earl! Kind of a minor thing, but for the 2012 Brier article (and probably all the others), would it be more correct to list the territories as "Northwest Territories/Yukon" or "Yukon/Northwest Territories?" It was listed as "Yukon/Northwest Territories" in the teams table but as "Northwest Territories/Yukon" elsewhere, and the CCA site shows it as "Northwest Territories/Yukon" (NT/YT), but I just wanted to check with someone who would know more about it than I do. Pierre Bourque[edit]

Just to keep you updated on what's happening with Pierre Bourque (journalist):

  1. I had the BLP noticeboard come in to do a third party review of the article for compliance with WP:BLP, so some of the potentially problematic content has been trimmed down — but fundamentally the article's now much cleaner and more straightforward, and less likely to raise any new issues.
  2. During the process, I also noticed that while you quite rightly restored the article back in 2010 after Spoonky's first attempt to speedy it without a legitimate rationale, you did so in a way that left a big chunk of the edit history still deleted and stranded at the redirect from "Pierre Bourque (web entrepreneur)". So I remerged the two edit histories a few hours ago, and just wanted to quickly remind you that when you do restore a deleted article, you should do it by using the "restore" function so that the whole history is reinstated, instead of by cutting and pasting the deleted text into a new recreation.

Grand Slam of Curling[edit]

Hey Earl! Just a quick question. Sportsnet had posted up a schedule for the men's Grand Slams for this season, but I haven't seen anything regarding the women's Grand Slams, so I was wondering if you knew anything about it. I tried to update the 2012–13 curling season page to reflect the information I did know, but I'm not completely sure if everything's up-to-date there. Looking at the women's slams, there are four already scheduled (the Autumn Gold Curling Classic, the Manitoba Lotteries Women's Curling Classic, the Colonial Square Ladies Classic, and the Masters). I wasn't aware that the Colonial Square Ladies Classic had become a slam, and I'm thinking that the Players' should be part of the women's schedule as well, but that would make the total number of slams to be five, which is a little weird, so I wanted to check in with you. Save for the Players', women's slams have rarely been shown on TV, so the reason that you can't find anything is because they are probably not going to be shown. As for the amount of Slams, it seems that for the women, the amount changes every year. There was a season a few years ago where they did actually have five slams. However, the WCT site shows there only being three Women's slams this year. Where are you getting the information that there are five? -- Earl Andrew - talk 17:36, 11 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm... I wasn't too keen on trusting the WCT site for the Grand Slams, because it seems as if it hasn't been updated recently regarding the new information on the Grand Slams. I was assuming that there may be five based on the fact that the Players' has traditionally been a slam, but I'm not too sure... I know that the Autumn Gold, the Manitoba Lotteries, and the Players' have been Grand Slams for the past few seasons, but I'm not very sure about the status of the Masters on the women's tour and the Colonial Square Ladies Classic... I read this article, which says at the end that the Masters will be the first Grand Slam event of the season, a while back, and this article (entitled "Sportsnet Announces 2012-13 Grand Slam of Curling Event Schedule") further confirmed that. I'm not sure where or if I read this, but the Masters used to be the Sun Life Classic, which makes sense, I suppose, since the website for the Sun Life Classic (http://www.sunlifeclassic.com) redirects to the site for the Masters. As for the Colonial Squares Ladies Classic, I haven't read anything that's talked about the promotion of the event to Grand Slam status, but Sirrussellott made an edit which supports that idea. Small technicality...[edit]

Hey Earl! Do you know if teams representing Germany back in the day when West/East Germany existed were known as "West Germany?" It's funny, back when I first created the list of Women's and Men's world curling champions, I identified Germany as West Germany, but after a while I decided to drop the west, because all signs seemed to point to it being referred to as just Germany. I don't think there was any curling in East Germany... Sandra Schmirler[edit]

Hey Earl! I've been working on the article on Sandra Schmirler, and I'm hoping to nominate it for GA status, but I just wanted to ask you about a few things. I was just looking over the GA guidelines, and I noticed that the article only has one picture. Even though it probably won't matter, I was wondering if you knew of any other pictures that could be added to the article. Also, I had put in the teams table, but it looks a bit awkward where it is right now. I'm not sure where else to put it, though, so if you want to move it around, that'd be nice. Also, how do you think the article looks as a whole? It seems ready for a nomination, but I just wanted to check with you, since you probably know more about what should/could be in the article than I do. Thanks much! I've noticed your efforts. Good stuff. I have made a few fixes, and will take a look at the article again at some point. As for pictures, the only thing I can think of is making a diagram of her most famous shot, the one she made to win the 1997 Canadian Olympic Curling Trials over Shannon Kleibrink. Cool! I just realized that it might be good to place the "Event statistics" and "Teams" section as subsections under the "Curling career," but it's a tad strange, since the teams section is usually separate from the "career" section. World Curling Federation and the Canadian Curling Association for most of it. The Olympic Trials are another matter, as it seems there is no good source on the internet anymore. It's too bad, because I am sure they would have had player percentages for that event. I remember having to look up the results in the newspaper for that page. I don't have time to source everything at the moment, unfortunately, but I think you're probably comfortable with where I found that stuff. TBH, I used this site: http://www.cassidys.ca/cca/ instead of the CCA since it's easier to find stuff, and has career totals. Not sure how official of a reference it is though. Hey Earl! The reviewer pointed out that the source link for File:Schmirler_Sandra.jpg isn't working. I tried to look around in the Library and Archives of Canada, but I could't find the exact picture. Do you know where else it might be? Also, I found this picture while searching through the Library and Archives. I think it'd be a good add, but I just wanted to confirm that it would qualify for non-free use. Hey Earl! Random question... Do you know where I could find a source for this statement? "Scotland, England and Wales all compete separately in international curling. By an agreement between the curling federations of those three home nations, only Scotland can score Olympic qualification points for Great Britain." It's been tagged with a "citation needed" template on the Curling at the 2014 Winter Olympics page, but I'm not sure where to find a source. Thanks! Masters Grand Slam of Curling[edit]

Hey Earl! I'm just having a bit of trouble figuring out what the official name of the Masters Grand Slam of Curling is. On the WCT site, the event's listed as the "Rogers Masters of Curling," but the official website says that the event name is "The Masters Grand Slam of Curling." I looked around on some other sites, and CBC calls it the "Rogers Masters of Curling," the Curling News calls it "The Rogers Masters," and the Brantford Expositor calls it the "Masters Grand Slam of Curling," so I'm a bit confused.
