Hey, at Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Armageddon (2006) a user is saying that you agreed http://www.wrestleview.com/ fell under the bounds of our reliable source criteria, but he references your cheatsheet (which doesn't mention it.) Robert of Jumièges

Boo! Another wicked archbishop. There is a rather nice image of his missal here. Since Wikimedia Commons have decided that "PD-Art" and "PD-Scan" are fine regardless of any copyright notices the Bibliotheque de Rouen may think to apply, I could PNGify this and upload it to Commons. The wicked archbishops are more fun though! He's really short, and I'm of two minds on the missal. He didn't comission it, he just looted it, so I'm kinda thinking I'd rather show shots of Jumieges, which he did at least start building. We could replace old Billy boy though, I guess. I've been through everything I own, and no a single doodle of him do I see. And thanks on the praise, he was kinda easy, since I just spent so much time on Stigand. Need a helpy helper

Nice new article out there called Ranch Sorting. I am in a discussion with the creating editor over if s/he needs to footnote every single sentence if it's to the same source. I also toned down a little of the Peacock wording. Was wondering if you'd like to take a peek over there on the talk page and discuss footnoting protocols because I don't want to be too harsh on the topic and WP:FOOT doesn't really offer any clear guidance. Follow up

I am the original author of Ranch Sorting and thought I would leave some additional comments here on why I use my unique style of footnoting.

I understand that Ranch Sorting is not a controversial subject nor is it a particularly complicated subject and that providing citations for every sentence is overkill for this article. However many of the articles that I have worked on have thirty or forty citations and I have found the procedure I use to be an invaluable aid to to keeping the citations straight as the articles evolve.

I specifically started using the process when I rewrote an article on US Senator Paul Coverdell that did not contain a single citation and I had to go in sentence by sentence and verify the facts in the article one by one, and then completely reorganize the article based on the new information added. The point I am making is that there are processes from engineering and programming that may be applicable to writing articles for wikipedia, and that it is good practice to follow the processes even when they aren't really required.

Citation Entropy

There are two specific problems I see time and again on wikipedia that the process addresses: A paragraph may be properly cited, then someone comes in and adds new material to the paragraph that is not supported by the citation or moves a sentence from a paragraph that has a citation to another part of the article. In the first case, someone should add a [citation needed] notation to the added material until a citation can be provided. In the second case, someone should replicate the citation and move it along with the sentence. Usually neither takes place and both these cases degrade the quality of the information in a wikipedia article.

Programming Inheritance

"Citation Entropy" is not an issue in written research. When an author writes an article for a book, it is acceptable to provide a single citation for a paragraph or an entire section since the written work is immutable. However, Wikipedia differs from the written work because the collections of facts are not immutable and that is why wikipedia needs a process that provides what programmers call Inheritance (computer science) to the programming primitives - in this case the "facts" in a wikipedia article.

I replaced the reference that pointed to the Alumni magazine. I recast part of that section, as well, to provide a slightly fuller view of Lafayette's involvement with the societe des amis des noirs. Many of the cites you brought up I had left in because they had been added by editors who were helping early-on; and, the information was easily verifiable elsewehre. I have them... but they are (mostly) at home. I buy, not interlibrary loan, so most of what I use I still have. The problem is, I'm not at home and won't be for at least a week, if not a bit more. I can look in the car tomorrow night and see what's in the bags I brought with, but they were mainly to deal with Robert of Jumieges, not anything about Edward the Martyr. I'll see what I can dig up. Im not sure I can save it before it loses GA status, but I can probably bring it up to speed later. I have to admit that the sourcing is a bit... iffy. Several of the sites being used are ... not what I would call the best. I'd replace the following:

Your comments on Netley Abbey were very useful indeed: you gave me your thoughts on what to change and told me where, which meant I could fix the problems. More importantly, you told me why, so I don't make the same mistakes again. One thing I thought was particularly good was that you pointed out where something might not be clear to international readers. I know that I tend to write in a very formal UK academic style when writing about things like this so a heads up on that is cool. You said that you might be able to fix the link to the online version of the VCH in the Netley bibliography, I'd be very grateful if you could as I don't know how to do it.

Attachment therapy

Hey there! I know this is well outside the realm of what I usually ask for your help on, but I'm involved in a rather knotty GAR on Attachment therapy, which can be found at Wikipedia:Good article reassessment/Attachment therapy/1. A few weeks ago, I offered a second opinion on a GA review of the article, and after some work by the editor, passed the article. Immediately after passing it, another user posted a series of complaints, and then almost immediately listed the article at GAR. Some of his complaints were valid and work has been done on the article, but he still continues to complain about the article - the problem being that most of his complaints are fairly vague and unsubstantial. I still think the article is of GA status, but the main editor and I are looking to get some outside input to see if we're in the right or wrong. If you could take a look through this article, and some of the issues in the GAR (they're sort of summarized at the bottom, if you don't feel like reading through the whole thing), it would be fantastic. Also fantastic would be if you could bring in some of your other editing friends to comment. If not, then I understand completely...I know you're busy with everything else you do on WP. Thanks! Added the sandbox at Horses_in_warfare#The_Americas. Tweak away. Based on what I think Gwinva was saying, the big deal about the Civil War is that cavalry was used a lot in a time when Europeans were using other types of units more. Horses

I used to own a very smart horse that was half Arabian, half Quarter horse. He was a gelding and had the high spiritedness of an Arabian with the dependability of a Quarter horse. He was a horse with a sense of humor and fun, neat mix. His name was Whiskey Sour (I didn't name him, breeder did). Hi Nancy, just hijacking Ealdgyth's page to say hello and to point you to wikimedia commons in general ( http://commons.wikimedia.org ) where there are a ton more horse photos. The more experienced wikipedia editors upload images over there so they can be used in any of the wiki projects, not just wikipedia. Also, Ealdgyth's "culls" are better than the "best shots" from most of the rest of us! LOL! And Ealdgyth, can you take lots of "culls" of Dressage stuff and anything else useful? Like a horse's leg in shipping boots? A decent shot of an English curb bit (ideally by itself) would be useful too...hmmm, oh I could generate quite a list! (hint, hint) But most of all, have fun! Early Christian martyrs in the Middle Ages

Hey, Ealdgyth. I'm Geuiwogbil. You might remember me from such articles as Diocletian and Maximian. (Goodness, those were a long time ago, weren't they?) I've been tweaking up our article on the Great Persecution recently, and have come across a problem I think you might be able to provide some basic help with. You see, the works I've read often allude to a sort-of medieval "dark ages" between the actual age of martyrdom and the glorious enlightenment that was Edward Gibbon, wherein many lies and half-truths were bandied about about the early martyrs, but they don't provide any details. Since you're some sort of medievalist, I thought you might be able to direct me to some relevant works on the topic, or to some fellow Wikipedian who might be able to do the same. I'm not quite sure what you're wanting. The canonical author on late antiquity and Christianity is Peter Brown, he's done a lot of work on the desert monks and suchlike, although it's not really about the martyrs. Hm. Let me dig around a bit. It's not really a subject I studied much, but I'm pretty sure I have some stuff on it. Brown, who I mentioned above, would probably have information on the views of late antiquity (i.e. 400s to 600s). I'll check McMullen also, he's written about the time frame. Naming q.

I was wondering what Edith of East Anglia should be called, and not getting anywhere. Do you have any ideas? We can't call her Ealdgyth(?) can we? FLC refs / links to probable copyvio videos question

Hi Ealdgyth, could you take a look at Wikipedia:Featured list candidates/Mark of the Year please? The article Mark of the Year links to a bunch of videos of the marks (spectacular catches in Australian Football League games) that are on YouTube and seem to be likely copyvios (there is no indication that the uploaders have permission to do so, or are the original creators). The video links are used to illustrate (like ELs) but are in the list table like refs. My opinion is that we should not link to copyvios in any case, but I am not an expert, so any advice you could give would be greatly appreciated. The relevant guideline is WP:C where the policy is that we do not link to sites that are violating copyright. Period. The only exception is if the article is about a website, and there might be copyright violations somewhere on the site, but this doesn't apply. So, all other concerns are moot, and they should not be linked to unless they have permission. I've stopped working on FLCs because of lack of time, hope this helps! That's actually not a book. According to Gran2 (the user that added it), "It's sort of hard to define. It's basically a "making-of" DVD which was being given away in The Sun. Looking at the back of the case, aside from the basic Fox copyright, The Sun is the only company listed. Although, of course, they are both out by Rupert Murdoch." Question on sources

Generally YouTube is obviously not a good source for citing things. I was wondering however if you would consider a partner video to meet the criteria. Say for example, this interview with Patrick Stewart (first thing I could find) is from the BBC and is published by BBC Worldwide. the main concern I'd have is possibly linking to a copyright violation. If it's to the actual BBC feed on YouTube, it'd be fine as a convience link. The real problem with YouTube is two fold - linking to copyright violations, and the fact that the people who upload them may not be reliable. Thought you might be interested to know that it snowed in Houston (and at least as far south as Lake Jackson) yesterday. When I was 17, it snowed in Jacksonville, FL. Half an inch and the temperature dropped to 25, degrees, creating ice on the roads. I was working at a restaurant off I-95, and we were packed because traffic was moving 2 miles an hour. Jacksonville is crisscrossed with 7 bridges crossing the St. Johns River and 3 more going across the Intracoastal Waterway. One bridge in the city was open. Aeons ago, when I was in college in Houston, we had an ice storm hit. Like an inch of ice on the roads, everything was shut down. We had like six friends that ended up spending the night in our dorm room because they couldn't get home. The party was .. impressive (grins). That town shuts down when it gets below 35, and if it snows/ices, the world is going to end. Skulking around

I needed some escape from the work situation in our fine state, so I have been poking around here again. Mostly just process stuff with the projects. I am trying to avoid the frustration that heavy editing can cause at first.

For work, I personally oversaw the 13 most southern counties (out of an office in Marion) in Illinois for the last 3 months of the election, so I have my downstate chops down now. Glad to see you are still here and you are still active.

Let me know if there is any English Church, Crusade, or Middle ages stuff in general brewing that I might be able to help with. I refocused my efforts and edited my user boxes to relect this. I was working on quite a few projects that didn't even intrest me that much before I took my Wikibreak. No wonder it took so long to get back. Using encyclopedias as sources...

Hi Ealdgyth...long time no talk. A quick question regarding some GA reviews that I'm doing, and just for my general knowledge. I know in the past I've seen you comment against using encyclopedias (MSN Encarta, Brittanica, etc) as sources. Is this a personal opinion, an unwritten rule, or policy someplace? I've got one current GA review and one review that I'm considering doing that use these two encyclopedias as sources, and I'd like to clarify the situation, at least in my own mind. Thanks! It's a judgement call thing. Specialist encyclopedias (such as the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, or similar) are usually better to use than generalist encyclopedias. I don't usually object to using Encarta, Britannica for something simple, such as entymology, basic fact unrelated to the subejct of the article, etc, but leaning too much on it is a sign of concern. It's just "odd" to be using a generalist encyclopedia such as Encarta as a source for a generalist encyclopedia (such as Wikipedia). It's more an unwritten rule, partly backed up by the whole primary/secondary/tertiary source thing. Generalist encyclopedia's are tertiary sources, so they are depreciated as sources for Wikipedia. Don't worry about it -- I've asked qp10qp; with luck he'll have a little time to spare for it. Your notes on Nigel are interesting. Several of the relationships are dubious, so I think I'll put question marks on the relevant lines and see how that looks, and I'll put a question mark for the unknown parents of brothers. How do you want me to handle William of Ely? I could leave him off completely, or put him on, disconnected, with a note saying "known to be related", or you could mention him in the caption. I think the caption's probably the best choice, but it's your call.
Are you interested in collaborating on an article at some point? I haven't done much collaborating, but our interests seem to overlap and I wondered if it would be fun to try it. Perhaps Bede, or one of the other major clerics -- Alcuin, or Boniface? Or a saint such as Guthlac? Or one of the sainted kings? I don't have much in the way of specifically religious sources; my stuff is all pure Anglo-Saxon history, but there's quite a bit there that would be useful. I've been thinking that Bede needs some serious work. Until I dug into Wilifrid, I didn't realise that he'd been accused of heresy, and had to answer to the charge to his diocesan bishop, who was Wilfrid... THAT must have been fun. Alucin needs work also, but I do think Bede would be one of those things that we should be working on. I know I have been collecting some of the stuff ... just haven't dared to wade into it yet.
For William of Ely, just leave him off and I'll explain in a footnote/caption whatever. Keep in mind I'm not primarly an A-S person, I prefer the Norman period and to a lesser degree, the Angevin. I really need to work on the Norman kings, their articles ... suck. Another possibility would be Edward the Confessor, he's quite the controversial figure. Ealdgyth - Talk 19:22, 4 January 2009 (UTC)

Ouch. That is quite a list. Is that everything you found, or just a start? I have An English Empire, by Higham; I've only read parts of it but my recollection is that is that it's more an "Age of Bede" book than a book about Bede. I wonder if it would be best to start by picking two or three central books on Bede himself. That wasn't quite everything on the RHS bibliography, but it was everythign that looked like it might be useful and in English and was recent. I went ahead and ordered Bede, the Venerable (Twayne's English Authors Series), The Medieval Theologians: An Introduction to Theology in the Medieval Period (The Great Theologians), A Companion to Bede: A Reader's Commentary on the Ecclesiastical History of the English People, Conversion And Colonization in Anglo-Saxon England (Medieval and Renaissance Texts and Studies; Essays in Anglo-Saxon Studies), and The Venerable Bede (Outstanding Christian Thinkers). That's quite a list. I'm happy to order two or three myself, so that you don't have to do all the reading. I don't have a good basis for figuring out which ones are the most useful. I'd love to get "Ideal and reality in Frankish and Anglo-Saxon Society" as that Wormald essay gets cited a lot, but I don't want to pay $150. (One seller is asking $980, so maybe $150 is a bargain!) Absence

No problem; I don't expect Bede to be a quick process. I was delighted to see Angus chip in at the books list page; the more the merrier for a big article like this. I would expect we'll end up cutting quite a bit to ship out to sub-articles--there's a sub-article to be written just about the manuscript history of Historia Ecclesiastica, for example. I plan to keep working on other articles at the same time. If we get Bede into shape for a peer review in under two months I think we'll be doing very well, so there's no hurry. With luck we'll attract other contributors of the quality of Angus. I did mention it to qp10qp, and he said he was too busy to help but promised a detailed peer review when we're ready. Making plans for Nigel

On Nigel, I fixed a couple of obvious errors and added a link, but most of what I saw was copyediting, and you said you're going to do some more work so I left that. If you tell me when you're done I'd be glad to do a peer review/copyedit for you, so long as you don't mind the fact that I am ignorant about Anglo-Norman history.

I do have a couple of points I thought I'd raise that came up when I read them; just input for your next pass.

  • I'm not sure what "liberty" as a "corporate body" the monks wanted; what does that mean?
  • You mention a couple of medieval sources such as William of Malmesbury; is a short paragraph on sources warranted? (I'm not sure, myself; as a reader of history I am always interested in the sources, but I don't think every reader wants this. On the early A-S stuff I do it's often necessary because the sources are so thin. Up to you.)

It looks complete, as far as I can tell, and the sequence seems right. Good narrative throughout; it reads naturally with the reader being pulled from one event to the next through Nigel's life. No worries, I just added the Liber Eliensis bits and will try to work on the "liberty" issue tomorrow. I'm still undecided on the sources, but leaning towards no, as I don't really have a nice secondary source discussing how the various sources relate specifically to Nigel, and there are a lot of sources possible. One thing I like about Anglo-Norman history is that there are a good number of chronicles, plus lots of charters and other sources of information, so covering all the possible sourcs is kinda difficult and might take up too much space. Fair enough on the sources. Take a look at this and see what you think of the layout. I eventually decided not to add Alexander's niece and nephew as it is hard to make it clear what the relationship is. If you want them in, I think what I'd do is give Alexander a sibling to his left, named "?", and make them children of that. The niece's name would be "?" and I'd show her son Robert de Alvers directly below her without trying to indicate the father.
